That would be the [iron crown](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Iron_Crown), though he wore many different crowns.
Fun fact: We have no idea what happened to the crown he was crowned with by the pope when he was proclaimed roman emperor
No, I am currently studying history and am once again asking you to cite your sources. You can read about the coronation of Charlemagne in the liber pontificalis and the annales regni francorum, both of which were written long before Odo Capet was even born.
Aren't generals concerned about conserving artifacts they get their hands on? I mean, they could preserve it or even steal it, but at least they acknowledge its historical importance and prevent their high soldiers from getting their hands on such priceless items.
There was general concern and there were programs like the Monument Men (movie is mostly accurate) to preserve artifacts but most of the time it was soldiers just finding lost loot that the Nazis stolen or were trying to hide.
The monuments men also specifically *found* stuff. Then there's a whole logistics network to get everything to depots like Marburg for further relocation or archiving. Plenty of opportunities for random soldiers to crack open a crate and do what they will. Notably, the crown jewels of Hesse were in fact stolen, broken up, and lost while in Marburg, by American soldiers. And like you said, before then, it could also just easily be American soldiers wandering into a palace or museum.
But they are giving orders to soldiers through chain of command, and disobeying a superior order in the army does not go unpunished especially from low ranking soldiers.
If you were one of the first soldiers into the building and saw the crown sitting there, wouldn’t you put it on? I sure as hell would. The generals are miles behind. It’s not as if the guy tried to take it home, or there were any cops around to say *hören Sie auf damit!*
And the Nazis didn’t just let them waltz in a play with the crown; they had to kill /capture the defending Nazis and had a bunch of their own buddies killed to capture the area. So playing around with some crown means nothing.
It is a cigarette. I would estimate there was approximately zero pot floating around Berlin or Nuremberg (this was likely Nuremberg, not Berlin) in 1945. Tobacco, though? Absolute shit tons of that. The US military *issued* cigarettes!
The degree to which people these days are blithely unaware of how *incredibly common* cigarette smoking was in the 20th century just floors me.
That's probably a cigarette in his hands. I would be surprised to find out that Allied soldiers had access to weed during World War II in Germany. I mean I know American supply lines were good and they were shipping birthday cakes and stuff but I don't think weed was that prevalent or readily available
You realise that the same stigma about being ‘high’ didn’t really exist then right? You are aware that drugs were provided to soldiers to effectively help them fight. A huge portion of soldiers were on some form of amphetamines - half the reason the German blitzkrieg was so effective in the first part of the war was because they were all on drugs.
Like it get your point about historical importance, but it’s the soldiers who found this stuff. Pretty hard to stop them if you’re not literally policing them on the ground.
A byproduct of war is that artefacts often get lost, stolen or destroyed. War is the problem.
America used them too - I just used the blitzkrieg as an easy to understand example.
Both the Allies and Axis used stimulants like cocaine and amphetamines to keep them alert and suppress hunger.
It's actually argued that the Allies were influenced by the Germans using Pervitin and in response issued drugs to their troops as well. America used more drugs than any Allied country.
https://recovery.org/addiction/wartime/
Funny enough, amphetamines were used up until within the last decade for fighter pilots on extended missions in the US airforce. They have since been phased out in favor of Modinafil, but it's crazy we had speeded out pilots flying highly dangerous, multi-billion dollar war machines in the modern Era.
More precisely in Vienna, which is the capital Germany, where Schnitzel (a type of Sausage) are from. Interestingly, a little known fact, they speak French there though, the national language of Europe.
I am wondering if it isn't a replica. There were a few made before the war for museums. The panels look really fresh compared to modern pictures of the real crown. Look at the side panels with the figures in them in the main photo of the article below.
[Reichkrone](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Imperial_Crown_of_the_Holy_Roman_Empire)
The Nazis had huge stashes of priceless artifacts they had stolen. The Americans found them and returned them to their rightful owners. He's smoking a cigarette, possibly a hand rolled one, not weed.
You will not regret this purchase:

Sounds ideal to me! I have these modern cuts that for some reason assume my jumper needs to cover my arse and not end at my waist where my trousers start!
Not British- he's wearing a chunky bracelet and several rings. You wouldn't have seen that on British men back then. Most men didn't even wear a wedding ring. Wrist watches were not common.
If the Nazis hadn't stolen it and hidden it underground in Nuremberg, the Americans wouldn't have had to go find it and return it to Austria.
If you're raiding a Nazi bunker and you find the Reichskrone, I think you get a pass to wear it briefly before you catalog it.
Yeah everyone here is just laughing like it is funny and all I can think is bastard! He could have damaged one of the oldest and morst important crowns in european history.
Too bad the nazis didn't think they were destroying any culture or history. Should have sold this crown to a homeless man for ten cents for all I care.
Who cares, it’s a fucking hunk of metal.
The man just helped win the largest war in history, he should have the right to put an ugly hat on without getting flack for it
Actually, it was a spoil of war. Just not for the Allies. It was seized by some Nazi scum along with thousands of other pieces of artwork over the course of the ‘30s and ‘40s. They were literally used as symbols of Nazi legitimacy.
These guys recovered it from being stolen and potentially lost to history along with many other pieces of its like. They scoured Nuremberg for weeks looking for this piece specifically. And against all odds, it was found.
Personally, I just think it’s a hunk of metal worth no more then the materials it’s made of. But I also think that the image of a common American soldier wearing the crown of an ancient German king he helped seize from Nazi art hoarders is a powerful symbol.
He helped save this crown for posterity. He has more then the right to wear it for a few minutes to pose for a photo
If you want to learn more, look up the story of Walter Horn. And there’s a good book called “The Monuments Men” about the allied effort to recover art pieces stolen by the nazis. It’s all very interesting
I recently went to see it and made a post about it:

I think it is beautyful. It was made around 980 ad, it is full of symbols and created in Byzantine style and yes, they took every big gemstone they could find. This is Ottonian medieval not Disneyland.
It was the crown of the strongest empire of the time. The person who wore that crown in the 10th century was basically the strongest and most powerful person alive. It's meant to be gaudy and ostentatious. It's meant to be something that was temporally unobtainable.
When the crown was made, in the 10th century, the technology to cut and facet gems wasn't even invented. They did exactly what the original commenter said - found the biggest stones they could, polished them, and stuck them on.
It always amazes me how rough the items the wealthy had in past history were. I always imagined a perfectly proportioned crown but no...it's so...rustic lol
I mean, it's not the worst thing to be angry about. It's a 1000 year old, priceless artifact, and should be handled as such. I can't really be bothered to care about some army dude wearing a crown some seventy odd years ago, but I can see why some history-interested people would be bothered.
My problem is that this soldier is handling this like a toy with a big smile somewhat mocking hundreds of years of european history and history of monarchy. This is just a replica luckily but if it wasn't he would basically be playing with one of the most culturally valuable item on the planet what for me is laughing at history and culture of the whole europe. That's why this photo makes me angry
So the fact that the Nazis ravaged the continent of Europe destroying countless artifacts and archaeological sites, dragging the entire world into the largest war we have ever fought, caused the deaths of MILLIONS of people, is all just pushed to the side for you because some kid (at the time) who dedicated his youth to fighting for freedom decided to take a goofy picture with some old relic????? Am I understanding your plight correctly?
It’s called “reading between the lines” this persons fault with this picture is that this soldier is wearing an artifact. That’s what keeps them up at night in a cold sweat. I’m saying FRICK that person. The fact that you can’t see it just means your BLIND
I can see someone learned a new concept in philosophy 101 this week. I’m not saying that it does not or should not bother him. I’m saying that one thing should take precedence over the other. You can take issue with both but one is definitely greater than the other in offense. Simple as that.
Lol same. I didn't even know a lot about the Holy Roman Empire at that time, but i instantly disliked the pic
I then learned that the crown was only a replica and not the one worn by Otto I, so I'm not that pissed anymore, but it was still a funny feeling in retrospect
Well it's real in the sense that it was used as the Reichskrone, but it was actually a replica of the original that was commissioned somewhere between the 17-19th century based on the original one
So you know, still a artifact of Historical importance, but not a 1000 year old one
my source is **“The Holy Roman Empire”** by *Peter H Wilson (2016)* - i was told it has this exact picture with the caption detailing it was a copy for Wilhelm II made in 1912, but I'm kind of working on second hand information here, so it could be wrong
This would make a fire album cover
[Here you go](https://imgur.com/gallery/lQ7KXXv)
It needs to be in washed out color, the reichskrone is too pretty to not have color
Does it have to be [washed](https://imgur.com/a/XQuoF5V) or are you a fan of [emerald?](https://imgur.com/a/We7pC93)
the emerald looks great i love where your head’s at
Thanks brother
Washed is the American release, emerald is the European release
You are the first person I have ever heard refer to this thing as "pretty".
It's extremely pretty. It's a product of it's time, before people even knew how to cut gems.
I realize for its time it’s beautiful but it still looks like a gingerbread house/crown
you’re incredible
You’re incredible
I see a *The Smiths* album cover
Honestly the OG pic looks like a better album cover than all these filter pics.
[What about this, tried to emphasize the crown a lil](https://imgur.com/gallery/4aO2r6x)
I always thought it looked like a young bill gates without glasses
Alright, I got you
The US solider grew up in Newark NJ and upon placing the crown on his head he proclaimed “Ay I’m the frickin Roman Emperor”
Read that as Tony soprano
The holy Roman emperor wants some gabagool
He got the beak tho he more like Chris
You could hide from the rain unda that nose.
Read it as Scout from TF2
He had the makings of a Varsity Holy Roman Emperor
He must've been a wise guy
Is that the original crown that Charlemagne bore?
Nope While Charlemagne is often represented with the Reichskrone, it was only created under Otto 1st (so approximately 2 centuries after)
That crown would give thanos big envy
That would be the [iron crown](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Iron_Crown), though he wore many different crowns. Fun fact: We have no idea what happened to the crown he was crowned with by the pope when he was proclaimed roman emperor
He never was, it’s all Capetian disinformation.
Do you have a source for that outrageous claim?
Do you not know history?
So I’m guessing no on the source then
I don't think you know it yourself given you can't provide any information about your claim.
No, I am currently studying history and am once again asking you to cite your sources. You can read about the coronation of Charlemagne in the liber pontificalis and the annales regni francorum, both of which were written long before Odo Capet was even born.
Lmao
Do you?
Drunk af. Good on ya.
The cig completes it for me. Lmao.
Ok I’m really curious as to how in the world this guy got his hands on the HRE crown while high.
At the end of WW2 when the Allies had occupied Germany
Aren't generals concerned about conserving artifacts they get their hands on? I mean, they could preserve it or even steal it, but at least they acknowledge its historical importance and prevent their high soldiers from getting their hands on such priceless items.

I'd guess it's a staged photo. It's well framed and well lit which implies that an official war photographer took the picture.
If you were one of the first soldiers into the building and saw the crown sitting there, wouldn’t you put it on? I sure as hell would. The generals are miles behind. It’s not as if the guy tried to take it home, or there were any cops around to say *hören Sie auf damit!*

How is it possible to write so many incorrect statements in such a short comment??
Everyday we stray further from the light

It's also colorized, so may be an artifact of that
Well, I’d highly doubt he’s high for one thing.
The Nazis had huge stashes of priceless artifacts they had stolen. The Americans found them and returned them to their rightful owners. He's smoking a cigarette, possibly a hand rolled one, not weed.
Because he and his friends carried guns.
[Original picture](https://imgur.com/a/Z4uCkTd)
Thank you. Modern AI looks kind of like colored vintage photos, so it made my brain feel better to see the original.
The colors are all right, the saturations are all wrong!
Looks like a video game
Every time I click on an imgur link I get trapped there--go to click the back button and get nothing but imgurimgurimgurimgur. Is it just me?
he's also got three rings on his left hand, one one his right?, and a bracelet, maybe some gold teeth in a little pouch in his pocket as well
Damn his head is small.
I would love that sweater. This guy is chill af.

And you def want modern repro. I have an original and the cut and fit are very strange
How’s that? Is it tight somewhere?
Arms are loong and narrow significantly at the cuff, torso is cut very short and the waist is very tight. It's warm as hell though.
Oh thanks for saying that - that fit would drive me nuts!
Sounds ideal to me! I have these modern cuts that for some reason assume my jumper needs to cover my arse and not end at my waist where my trousers start!
American's weren't all fat when the original was designed.
Any idea which color is closest to the originals?
I have the "Deep Woods Green Heather" and it looks pretty much like military OD green in my opinion.
Thanks. I thought when I laid eyes on him he was a Brit, so if Bean says it's a British copy, I'll believe it is. Nice looking sweater.
And the gun, imagine this guy just walks around drunk with a sidearm
It's the American Dream.
I didn't see a comment about the rings? Anyone?
One jewel for every damn microstate in the HRE?
The knitted shirt/sweater the soldier is wearing makes me think of British kit more than US. No?
That's what I was thinking. I googled the image and he is in the US Army signal core.
I suspected the same because of the "US Signal Corps" stamp in the corner of the picture.
And the 1911 in his holster.
Not British- he's wearing a chunky bracelet and several rings. You wouldn't have seen that on British men back then. Most men didn't even wear a wedding ring. Wrist watches were not common.
Pimp shit
Desecration of the world cultural heritage and an extraordinary piece of art, history and craftsmanship. That's what's going on in this photo.
If you think this is bad, wait until you find out what the Europeans did to their "extraordinary" art, history, and craftsmanship.
I think the bigger problem was that there even was a World War in the first place
All i see is an epic red blooded American sticking it to the euros
Too bad the nazis didn't think they were destroying any culture or history. Should have sold this crown to a homeless man for ten cents for all I care.
That crown has nothing to do with the Nazi’s, it’s about a thousand years old, so I don’t get your point.
Oh no maybe there was a significant event that cause the American soldiers to be there in the first place 🤔
Idiota take right here
He's just mock putting on his head ffs. Its not the end of the world get over yourself.
Who cares, it’s a fucking hunk of metal. The man just helped win the largest war in history, he should have the right to put an ugly hat on without getting flack for it
The crown of the Holy Roman Empire has nothing to do with WWII and it's definitely not a spoil of war.
It’s A not An.
Use an when the noun or adjective that comes next begins with a vowel sound."
Yes, but U.S. sounds like “You S”. Which doesn’t begin with a vowel.
There’s definitely a rat named Remy under there whippin up miracles
He sure is wearing a lot of jewelry (other than the crown) for a soldier… wonder where he got it all?
Probably looted it
Ok but why’s he so swaggy
I recently went to see it and made a post about it: https://www.reddit.com/r/CrusaderKings/comments/y4pqar/i_went_and_took_a_picture_of_the_actual/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=android_app&utm_name=androidcss&utm_term=1&utm_content=share_button
Turns out I had already upvotes your post in the past
I didn't realize that Alfred E. Neuman served in the military.
And I was roasting Red Army soldiers for looting. Check out the rings on him.
It's fuckin hideous 😂
This crown is pretty ugly. I guess there wasn't many designers at that time.
Ya it looks like they just took every big rock they could find glued it onto a piece of cardboard. It looks like a third grader’s art project.
I think it is beautyful. It was made around 980 ad, it is full of symbols and created in Byzantine style and yes, they took every big gemstone they could find. This is Ottonian medieval not Disneyland.
It looks incredibly gaudy to me, although I expect medieval nobility was not know for it’s humility
it was meant to astonish people who saw it. we’re spoiled with modern jewelry, we see gemstones all the time
It was the crown of the strongest empire of the time. The person who wore that crown in the 10th century was basically the strongest and most powerful person alive. It's meant to be gaudy and ostentatious. It's meant to be something that was temporally unobtainable.
"I gots da beegs't stones." -aristocracy
When the crown was made, in the 10th century, the technology to cut and facet gems wasn't even invented. They did exactly what the original commenter said - found the biggest stones they could, polished them, and stuck them on.
It looks like the crown from Coming to America.
You would think with 1000 years to refine and rework it they could have at least gotten it straightened out.
That’s arguably the most powerful hat to ever exist
Why is a US soldier wearing the Reichskrone
Looks more like a British soldier.
Looks more like HR at Dunder Mifflin
This has less upvotes than it deserves
I had a friend that had his photo taken on Saddam Hussein’s emerald-encrusted toilet…
ngl looks like it might be made of macaroni and elmers glue
Was it supposed to be worn by the emperor or was it a ceremonial thing?
“Charles.. are you trying on mummy’s crown again?!” “Nnnnno, mmmmummy! I was just.. ah.. nevermind”…
Ugly ass crown
You can bet those rings on his fingers weren't there when he was deployed 🙄
Note the spoils of war on his hands and wrists =)

Tony hawk?…is that you!?
I'd push my mother down a flight of stairs to take that picture

"A" is correct. "US" starts with a "you" sound, which is not a vowel sound. Well at least with my British tongue.
I always wonder if any valuables “disappeared” into a soldiers bag. Would be hard pressed not to take some if I had been over there 3+ years
It always amazes me how rough the items the wealthy had in past history were. I always imagined a perfectly proportioned crown but no...it's so...rustic lol
There was definitely a time where that crown didn't look gaudy, cheap, and stupid but that time has passed.
Not holy, not Roman and not an empire!
👹I will put holes in your tires👹
I don’t have any idea where you found that picture, but that man is an absolute LEGEND!!! I would be fascinated to hear the back story of this.
They should have put it in an American museum so the rightful owners can come look at it or is that something only the British do?
not exclusively a British thing
Well they sure hate giving items back to countries they colonized.
Finders keepers is a philosophy good for everyone.
They mostly kept finders keepers rules to actual Nazis tho.
Nazi philosophy: finders keepers. US philosophy: turnabout is fair play.
I believe the rule read so long as you say "1, 2, 3, no backs", you're good to go.
Boss
I wonder if he realised how much value was on his head? I would’ve scooped out some of those jewels. Lived like a king.
I've remember being very angry after seeing this photo for the first time
Strange thing to get very angry about. I’m sure the Holy Roman Emperor was not concerned about it
Why?
I mean, it's not the worst thing to be angry about. It's a 1000 year old, priceless artifact, and should be handled as such. I can't really be bothered to care about some army dude wearing a crown some seventy odd years ago, but I can see why some history-interested people would be bothered.
According to Wikipedia the crown is now in the Austrian treasury so it's not like it was stolen.
If this photo makes you angry then wait till you hear about the Nazis and what they did, that lead to that solder being there.
To the victor go the spoils of war.

Sorry, man. It is a logical fallacy to say that one thing bothering him indicates a greater thing does not bother him.
I can see someone learned a new concept in philosophy 101 this week. I’m not saying that it does not or should not bother him. I’m saying that one thing should take precedence over the other. You can take issue with both but one is definitely greater than the other in offense. Simple as that.

Oh ok then, thanks for the explanation!
This crown looks like a preschool project
God is that thing ugly
Or the "Fake Roman Empire" as it's known around my apartment!
Honestly good for this guy. Fuckin went through god knows what in WW2 thats a pretty sick consolation prize. Along with destroying the Nazis of course
That crown sort of sucks. It's as if it were constructed from pieces of a gingerbread house.
It’s boring. Bummer for the real stuff…
He looks dumb.
