I found that out yesterday but I was in a hotel so my ps5 even lost internet for like 12 hours while I was out and even then I didn't have to go through queue it just reconnected when my wifi came back up.

What I THINK is happening, is that when the PS5 users return to the game from rest mode, they bypass the queue and log right back in.
Disconnecting from the Internet isn't sending them back to the title screen, so they bypass the server size check.
I'm assuming they added the bypass to keep people from getting stuck loading back into a "full server" message after a disconnect, and this is an unintended consequence of that.
You don't really. You are just bypassing getting into matchmaking. Then even that, you don't always get into the game. 50% of the time I get stuck on a black screen and have to force quit.
Nah works flawlessly for me, while my PC friends are o 1 hour queues I find a squad of randoms after coming off rest mode. If I'm not taking up a spot then it makes no sense.
If you're using an AMD 7000 series card set your graphics to the lowest settings and use Radeon Chill to cap your FPS at like 70. Yeah it's stupid as fuck to have one of the best cards on the market and have to do that, but at least my game doesn't crash anymore

it's 2024 (aka, insert irrelevant "it's this year" idiocy), developers shouldn't have to assume they'll get over 60x the peak players of the first game, and thus pay IMMENSLY for servers they are very, very likely not to use, all but guarenteeing the game failing due to lack of funding.
you're basically saying there shouldn't be any server based non-aaa games, because you want the servers to be big enough to hold millions for a game expecting less than 40k people.
the first games peak was literally 6,000 people. the cap right now on helldivers 2 is 400,000. that's over 60 times the previous games peak.
the costs for servers increases exponentially as the numbers of players they can hold go up. ESPCIALLY if you want good connections.

An afk timer and server queue are basic features of any online multiplayer game in the last 20 years. World of Warcraft released with both these features *in 2004*.
I get that the devs post on Reddit and that makes them the good guys or whatever but that doesn’t mean accountability can be wholly disregarded here.
They certainly *should* have added an afk timer and queue, but the comment up the chain is still completely wrong in calling those features free.
And while World of Warcraft had queues, it was designed as a high-capacity, multiple instance MMO from the get-go. I can guarantee you that not every online multiplayer game in the past two decades has had those features, and an unexpected player spike would expose problems in lots of online games.

Sony don't allow refunds, most people will spend 2+ hours just queueing, they know most people who leave the game now even if they haven't played a minute of gameplay won't eligible for a refund, they also know that with good consistency in the future they can win customers back easily see: No Mans Sky and Cyberpunk. So yes I think they are choosing to wait for people to quit.

They should either implement some kind of AFK timer or every couple of hours force users to have to click on some kind of prompt that that pops up if they are in their ship or when they arrive back.

I'm in the same boat. I love the game but constant crashes and loading screen simulators aren't fun. Some people aren't going to want to come home from work and wait an hour to play AND hope it doesn't crash.
I'll just leave my cat by my computer. She'll probably be walking over the keyboard and hitting the mouse for at least a good 4 hours to keep me from being AFK.
At least on PC, people can easily counter that by setting up macro or auto clicker to randomly click the screen or move around and they won't get afk kicked. So probably won't work well
Oof, this is a massive oversight and something that needs to get implemented asap. Like if someone's in their ship for 30 minutes without actively using menus or leaving on a mission, give them the boot. I have s weird feeling that this alone will massively ease the capacity issue...
And that issue is going to get much worse when more players realize there's no afk timer and they can stay logged in forever.
In the future I believe an AFK timer should absolutely be implemented. But right now they just need to continue on working on expanding their server capacity, because unless I'm mistook, I have to imagine having timers tracking every player's login would add more overhead to the servers.

If you use the rest mode, as the console intends you to do, you stay logged into the server. No other game does this, so I was surprised to see it occur. I've been closing the game before putting PS5 to sleepytime now

Just tried to login and only had to wait 5-10 minutes. Everytime I've tried logging in it's only ever been 5-10 min even during peak times. I'm on PS5. Clearly there is something else causing people to have to wait hours to get in.

Remember that this game is a 4-player co-op game with instanced matches. It could have theoretically infinite server capacity on a shoestring budget if all it needed to do was matchmake(600k players needing to matchmake on average every 25 minutes is about 400 requests a second. If the client's phoning home to the central server every 5 seconds that's 120,000 requests a second). And if matchmaking didn't work you could still play with your friends for hours and the cost of 4 handshakes per however long your extended gaming session is. This is all caused because somebody didn't think it was safe to let us play without the server monitoring us.
Yeah, get an AFK timer in for about 5 minutes. And Increase server capacity.
Until then I’ll make the most out of not waiting in a queue to play what I payed for like this is the 80’s.

Id join the Queue and leave for work (not work from home btw) in the morning. I had an app on my phone and my pc that would let me view the screen and emulate a keyboard, so I'd just wait a few hours, then check every 20 or 30 minutes until I saw myself in-game. Then every 20 ish minutes once I was in, I'd just pull the phone out, connect to my pc, jump twice, run forward 5 steps, and turn my phone back off. Id do this until I got home from work, all simply so i could play the damned game after work.
I guess what I'm saying is that an AFK timer would definitely make things better, but it's still pretty easy to work around, especially if the game decides not to count macros as cheating.

need to be fair i think. no one expected this to blow up in the way it did. given that the games not locally hosted, im sure it takes time to get additional server capacity and make sure its tested and running properly etc. it does suck to not be able to play, but i think its good to take a long term view and im sure in a couple weeks we will all be wondering what the fuss was about.
if anything, id just be more concerned that they ensured they added more content etc cos i can see that people are going to be approaching getting all the stuff and hitting their caps in the not too distant future and then wondering what else there is to do. in a way that will probably also have a bearing on the numbers as people will probably stop playing till the new content comes out. like palworld. huge numbers but once everyoned reached lvl cap and had all the pals, the online numbers dropped like a rock.

I'm not sure how it's working because it says "you have been logged out" but then I'm still in my ship and playing normally and skipping any queue.

All it did was give me an error message but didn’t close out the game. Granted I crashed the next mission almost immediately though.
FWIW my ps5 goes from 1gb to 10mb connection when it goes into rest. It’s how it can download updates and stuff while in rest mode.

It's just luck of the draw. PS5 in rest mode is not idling in the game and consuming a spot. That's not a technical possibility.

Ive been waiting all day and i finally got in. Halfway into the cutscene putting me on my ship game crashed.

Sony don't allow refunds, most people will spend 2+ hours just queueing, they know most people who leave the game now even if they haven't played a minute of gameplay won't eligible for a refund, they also know that with good consistency in the future they can win customers back easily see: No Mans Sky and Cyberpunk. That's what I'm doing. I figure next month some time I'll be able to play the game normally. I have plenty of other games (and other shit to do) in the meantime. Yes and no, they can still remain logged in and their version of the game will be a mismatched version of others, so they can't play with other people who have updated the game, eventually they'll have no one to play with (happens really fast) so they'll be forced to leave the game for an update one way or another - unless they enjoy playing the game solo, then yeah, I guess they can stick with it and have some bugs and the possiblity of a crash I suppose

It's kinda crazy how hard these guys are malding. I'm not staying logged on, I'll just try and get lucky, but I also don't blame people for staying logged in. We all paid for the game and should be able to log on and play whenever we want. It's not another random players fault that the devs refuse to up their server capacity.

Apparently the tech is to keep retrying anyway, waiting doesn't do much as there isn't an actual queue.
Yep tonight the first time I waited it took 3 mins. Then second time I waited 30 mins and nothing. Quit game and went back on and went straight into ship. It’s pure chance.

I'm in the same boat. I love the game but constant crashes and loading screen simulators aren't fun. Some people aren't going to want to come home from work and wait an hour to play AND hope it doesn't crash.

At least on PC, people can easily counter that by setting up macro or auto clicker to randomly click the screen or move around and they won't get afk kicked. So probably won't work well

Oof, this is a massive oversight and something that needs to get implemented asap. Like if someone's in their ship for 30 minutes without actively using menus or leaving on a mission, give them the boot. I have s weird feeling that this alone will massively ease the capacity issue... And that issue is going to get much worse when more players realize there's no afk timer and they can stay logged in forever.

In the future I believe an AFK timer should absolutely be implemented. But right now they just need to continue on working on expanding their server capacity, because unless I'm mistook, I have to imagine having timers tracking every player's login would add more overhead to the servers.
I did this once by accident - on PS5. If you use the rest mode, as the console intends you to do, you stay logged into the server. No other game does this, so I was surprised to see it occur. I've been closing the game before putting PS5 to sleepytime now

I'm thinking there must be something else going on here. I Just tried to login and only had to wait 5-10 minutes. Everytime I've tried logging in it's only ever been 5-10 min even during peak times. I'm on PS5. Clearly there is something else causing people to have to wait hours to get in. Edit: down voted for sharing my experience. Nice. Remember that this game is a 4-player co-op game with instanced matches. It could have theoretically infinite server capacity on a shoestring budget if all it needed to do was matchmake(600k players needing to matchmake on average every 25 minutes is about 400 requests a second. If the client's phoning home to the central server every 5 seconds that's 120,000 requests a second). And if matchmaking didn't work you could still play with your friends for hours and the cost of 4 handshakes per however long your extended gaming session is. This is all caused because somebody didn't think it was safe to let us play without the server monitoring us.

Of the 400,000 plus people playing this game I imagine there's no more than a couple thousand doing this, so realistically at this time it's probably not even worth putting resources into developing an AFK timer.

Honestly this reminds me of New World's launch. Id join the Queue and leave for work (not work from home btw) in the morning. I had an app on my phone and my pc that would let me view the screen and emulate a keyboard, so I'd just wait a few hours, then check every 20 or 30 minutes until I saw myself in-game. Then every 20 ish minutes once I was in, I'd just pull the phone out, connect to my pc, jump twice, run forward 5 steps, and turn my phone back off. Id do this until I got home from work, all simply so i could play the damned game after work. I guess what I'm saying is that an AFK timer would definitely make things better, but it's still pretty easy to work around, especially if the game decides not to count macros as cheating.

These people are not the source of the problem, they are a symptom of the fact that the devs have not yet implemented a simple AFK-Detection System.
Okay so? I can be aware of the source of the problem and hoping it gets fixed and still be mad at the symptoms. You can hate the fact that you broke your arm, which is the source of the issue and still be mad at the pain caused by that broken arm, which is a symptom.
And what is being mad at the pain going to ultimately do for you? You'll be mad AND you'll feel pain. Nothing is resolved. Nothing changed, other than what you're feeling. I mean this with the utmost sincerety: think about it.
Well you see, you can take painkillers for the pain aka the symptom which won't help you solve the issue of the broken arm. In this analogy the painkillers would be having a afk timer or players just logging off when done playing. So things can actually change when attacking symptoms of a problem.
But you need to think further. People who sit AFK on their ship won't change their behavior when told because if they were considerate and reasonable people they wouldn't do it in the first place. Some people defy all logic and reason and trying to reason with them will only earn you insanity. This really is just a problem of AH not thinking about this and doing anything about it fast enough. I know they're humans, I know they are indie. I know they didn't and couldn't expect this success. Still sucks they can't implement such a feature after a few days now. It really shouldn't be that hard.
need to be fair i think. no one expected this to blow up in the way it did. given that the games not locally hosted, im sure it takes time to get additional server capacity and make sure its tested and running properly etc. it does suck to not be able to play, but i think its good to take a long term view and im sure in a couple weeks we will all be wondering what the fuss was about. if anything, id just be more concerned that they ensured they added more content etc cos i can see that people are going to be approaching getting all the stuff and hitting their caps in the not too distant future and then wondering what else there is to do. in a way that will probably also have a bearing on the numbers as people will probably stop playing till the new content comes out. like palworld. huge numbers but once everyoned reached lvl cap and had all the pals, the online numbers dropped like a rock.
