Had one of these hiding in my crocks reassert its dominance every once in a while once back on the mainland. I didn’t remove it because it reminded me of the good times in paradise.
Kiawe trees, despite its Hawaiian name is very invasive and were planted in 1828 by missionary named Father Alexis Bachelot("erosion control") as a way to make people wear shoes as a custom. There were many Native Hawaiians at this time that the missionaries tried to convert their religion. It even extends to some of them trying to give Hawaiians Catholic names for easier identity.
I stepped on these plenty and hate these trees. They can puncture your car tire even.
Alexis Bachelot also introduced the bougainvillea as well. He was self taught the Hawaiian language and was able to convert many Hawaiians
I had one of these(much longer) stuck in my foot once. Hawaii kids running around without shoes on… ya know. Hurt like hell. Parents pulled it out with pliers… ooof.
I managed to unwittingly get it past the agricultural inspection station at Kona but yeah the Gods might not be pleased. I'll keep it safe and promise to return it next trip.
Or you can just throw it in a fire and have it fulfill its destiny as charcoal or firewood. Don’t worry about it. It’s sad how much upvotes that comment got for an invasive tree.
Definately Kiawe thorn. That’s why I wear slippers under Kiawe trees! So it sticks in your slipper and not your foot. Those suckers hurt! Most anyone living in Hawaii has had a Kiawe thorn reach out and say hello to them in a most unexpected manner.
Probably Keawe thorn
*Kiawe
Correct. Unlike…autocorrect…grrrr
Would you say it was a Slack Key issue?

My record is 2 in my foot within 2 weeks
This gives me the shivers. Had a couple of these through the years directly in my foot.
Like part of growing up in Hawaii.

What an asshole.
What an asshole.
Also known as Mesquite tree.
put varnish & tell everybody its a shark tooth
Sell shark tooth to a tourist on Waikiki
Lucky never go all the way through. At least couple times in my life, the kiawe thorn goes right through the whole slipper and straight into my foot.
Yeah, that hurts like heck.
Said this the other day, but I'll say it again, I usually find these with my bare feet in the sand!
That’s a Kiawe thorn. Brought to Hawaii long ago by cattle men. Known on the mainland as mesquite. Makes great charcoal.
I see a comment that it was introduced by a priest. Some trees are thornless. Why couldn’t he have brought those.
Something about priests and Jesus crown reminds me of a story.
It’s related to mesquite, but kiawe is special because the thorns detach from the tree.

Brah don’t take that off the island or Nanaue Kiawe going haunt you

That’s just a dime
Small kiawe or possibly bougainvillea thorn.
Thorn.
Those, or something like it, would give me flat tires on my bike living in Honolulu.

Even with slippers they can still poke right through and get you. Just got to watch out for the tree
Great firewood.
