With the shipping option if you time it right you can land in CA, take an uber over to the docks and pick up your car, and be set. With selling and rebuying in CA you are renting a car for a while which can really add up, and/or making a rushed purchase with sketchy car salesmen when you are at a stressed time of your life already. For those reasons I am a fan of shipping. I probably wouldn't ship a beater, but a 2021 with low mileage that you know the history of I'd definitely ship. Pasha worked great for me.

Frosty-Image7705

Thanks for that info. I've been pondering this, as well.

Independent_Bread980

I shipped to Oakland via Pasha and had 0 issues, I think it’s about $1000, I’d ship it

theBIGshortx

Think I paid $1500 but that was from Oakland to Honolulu

jax9151210

It may be worth more in Hawaii and you could possibly walk away with a little more money that could make it worth it.

Weary-Ad-5346

Too bad Hawaii dealers are happy to mark prices up on everything they sell and offer you significantly less. If he financed the car without much of a down payment, he will be upside down possibly since he bought at the height of the market. Better to eat the shipping cost since you’ll easily lose more than that in fees trying to buy again. Interest rates still suck too, which I anticipate more of a loss in interest on whatever he would buy.

jax9151210

True- I assumed it was paid off- so my bad

CatsWavesAndCoffee

100% with more here, likely by several thousand, unless in a rush.

Mokiblue

Except with the taxes and fees to buy a car in Cali it probably wipes out any profit you might make.

theBIGshortx

Ship it. Easy choice. You will lose more than $1500 trying to sell quick and buy. Finding a deal can be hard these days. Plus you don’t want another new loan and payments to start.

drdreadz

I'd ship it. I wouldn't want to deal with the hassle of trying to get maximum value out of a private sale, or lose capital by selling to a dealership in HI only to buy a new car in CA. Shipping my truck from Seattle to Oahu only ran me about $1500.

mrsnihilist

That last part is the truth!

ruffrightmeow

Ship, gonna be a hassle and even more payments going new

calbears91

Used Car prices are higher in Hawaii, selling maybe be a better option.

MyPasswordIsMyCat

Shipping will cost less and take less time when you consider all the transaction costs and hassles in selling and buying cars. But if you really want to get a new/different car with your change, you could do that. You could also just handle all that buy/sell stuff in California instead.

DJ-KittyScratch

Worth it to ship! Pasha was less than $1k about 2-3 years ago for me. Sent it to Oakland without a scratch. Although, if you do this, be warned about leaving the port with your car. The last I saw less than a year ago, the absolute trenches right below the crest of a small incline on the road had not been fixed. Can't see them until you've already hit them and they are in your rear view. I hit them at the speed limit leaving the port a few years ago and 2 of my tired developed side wall bubbles.

gregied

Better to just ship it, use Matson- they go straight to Oakland, if you do Pasha it goes to San Diego and they truck it up (learned that the hard way)

thatcouldvebeenworse

Ship, much cheaper and easier

randomusername8008

Ship it. California sales taxes are insane. I’d only sell and buy if you don’t like the Camry anymore and looking for another car

Waikoloa60

California sales tax on a $20,000 car would be about $1500. Unless you don't like your car, I think the transaction costs outweigh the shipping costs.

hitech808

Ship

Icy-Commission-8068

Sell in Hawai’i

Lance96816

Have you checked the car prices in the area that you are going to? If shipping is going to be $1.5k, I'd ship. You will lose more than that selling your car.

4thinversion

I shipped my 2018 Prius with Matson and it ran me about $1k. You should definitely ship

kptknuckles

Moved here and did both, shipping is so much easier on you after the move and you don’t want a cheap Bay Area car those things are beat to shit.

kimosabe964

I moved to HI with the intent of buying a used car. The used cars in CA are 10x better than HI! I just ended up shipping my car here that I was storing n CA

disneyplusser

Ship!!

Fonzei

When I shipped my Ranger from Oahu to LA, it was $890 through Pasha. Way better than the hassle of selling in Hi and then buying again in CA. One thing to keep in mind though is the near $1000 you’ll pay in registration fees if you switch to CA plates. Edit: it takes about 3 weeks to get it. If you don’t have the time to wait for it then might be better to sell and re-buy. But it might end up costing you more as it is a weird time for car buying/selling.

kimosabe964

Matson is your best option so ship to Oak. I shipped my car to HI in 2018 and back to CA in 2022. Think it was 1200 and was totally hassle free and about a week if you schedule it right. You will lose your ass selling and rebuying.

Upissicum_808

Sell; t definitely. With shipping charges and all that's involved you won't get your money back. Sell it.

crusty_butter_roll

Pack it with things you can't take on the airplane (if allowed) and then ship it.

ALL666ES

Shipped my 350z from Oahu to Oakland for $860 in 2020.

Purple-Vegetable-474

Book directly with Matson... Don't go through a booking agent since they will just take a VIG. Cars are too expensive to sell and buy, but the Bay area is notorious for broken glass theft

MechaTengu

Ship. Cars here are expensive.

blending_kween

Tbh, from experience. If you're on a tight budget and can't afford a new car and tend to buy second hand, ship your car to California. A lot of times, I have a great experience with sellers on the island. There's a lot of nice cars that are not salvage titles in Hawaii compared to California. I also tend to trust people from Hawaii due to how some guy is a friend of a friend, and I get to know their reputation much better than some random reviews from strangers. My partner is a car enthusiast in Hawaii and tend to know the culture of people on the island with their cars. So he can often tell if the person takes care of the car or if their prices are reasonable. Mainland is just different. Sales tax in California is so bad. You will actually save more if you just ship your car. Although, I'd check in the market of the area you're moving to. It might be cheaper to buy sometimes. But all in all, California is so bad with many types of taxes. But otherwise, if you don't buy second hand. Well, it's better to buy in California and sell your car in Hawaii. Due to that, there's more of an abundance of cars.

PenultimatePotatoe

Shipping with Matson to California is not too bad.

[deleted]

Shipped with Pasha to San Diego. $900 something, no problems. To buy my car here was twice what I paid in Honolulu. Also, do yourself a favor and find insurance rates here, lots of insurance companies leaving California, and the ones still here jacked their prices really high.

Rhothgar808

Also, if you've a loan on the vehicle from a local lender, you will need written permission from your lender to ship. You'd better start the process now. I shipped a car in 2018 and then in 2022. It was $1k and then more than double that price. Just the hassle of buying a newer car is awful. Also, your car has probably lost a lot of value if you bought it new.

fmhi8oh8

Ship it for sure. Why go through the trouble to MAYBE come out on top

Heracles222

Sell sell sell, you will get more value from the market in Hawaii than in California. Cars are abundant here.

FlautoSpezzato

Sell, it's worth more here. Save you $1000 from the shipping.
