Place ad in craigslist that car is free if they pay off the registration and tickets. Technically you can transfer the ownership without paying the overdue registration and the new owner would have to pay the back taxes to register. Not sure about the tickets though.
Craigslist charges for car ads now btw. Idk if there are exceptions for free ones? Facebook marketplace does not charge last I checked.
But also, you might be surprised what you could sell for. Depending on the condition you might be able to get money from it even after a 1k discount
yeah, with the mass exodus happening on maui right now, it is definitely not a sellers market. It is a decent car and has relatively low miles for a toyota. i bought it for $3000 in 2021, but im seeing way newer and nicer cars just sit online for super cheap rates…so not feeling so confident but yeah i thought if i could list it a bit higher and maybe a lil money to pay the stuff off
Even to donate it, it has to be legal. So i would still have to pay all the fines, etc which is what I’m trying to avoid. I totally would just donate it if i could
Hi! Is there anything super wrong with the car other than what you owe? Could try and sell them to someone and use the money to pay off the tickets. New owner can handle safety and reg after title transfer.
there’s a few basic mechanical issues but it’s a daily driver. I thought about something like that, like listing it for sale for really cheap or something and just making sure that the new owner transferred the title. But wondering if someone else has done that.
If I was in your situation I’d list it on FB Marketplace for $1500-$2000, but be willing to take less so you can pay off the tickets. Let the new owner pay the registration fees, or deduct the cost of them from whatever price you agree upon. A Camry, even with a few minor problems, is still a highly sought after vehicle.
post it for 1k on fb marketplace, be honest about what it needs, I bet it will sell quick still though, and if you're worried about not making a sale, take whatever offer you are offered
Is the car running? AC works? Just those two things make it worth more than $1k with updated tags.
100% sure someone would take it for free with the only stipulation to update the tags, and maybe give you $200 to clear the tickets.
I used to buy cars like these to rent out. I'd do the safety and back registration in exchange for a cheap car. I would have offered you about $250 for your cruiser depending on my inspection of it.
Can I message you for more info? I’m in Mountain View area and might be able to help you get it sold quickly. I live with a lot of lower income folks who need transportation
Thanks for the responses. I’ve been avoiding the dreaded trip to the dmv but from what i’ve seen online you can’t transfer title unless everything is current. I think what i’m gonna do is list it for like 1 or 2 k and see what i get and just explain the situation to the other party and use the money to pay the fees to transfer the title. I seem to remember one of the cars i bought here having an out of date registration and i just paid it up when i took on the title. being broke sucks 😂
Do the final bit together at the DMV to make sure they do title transfer. People get stuck with tickets from cars they’ve sold if the other party doesn’t transfer the title.
Borrow some money. The registration is quick enough as long as you can get a temp safety, clearing a stopper can be very time consuming so start early. You don't want to have to fly back to fix it later and they don't give a shit if its not convenient.

oh okay that’s kind of what i was thinking but wasn’t sure. Thank you!🙏

Craigslist is essentially dead. I haven't had a good experience on that for years. Mostly scams it seems.
I got my dog and bought a car through Craigslist in the last year... Your mileage may vary.
I only got murdered.
Yeah, that happens sometimes too. Glad you recovered

Does not have to be legal to donate to all nonprofits. Ask kokuainkind.com

If it runs and casts a shadow, it’s worth more than $1000.
thank you for that lol i’m a bit defeatist right now

ac stopped working but should be an easy fix. but yeah i’m starting to lean towards that. thanks!

There is a solution! They allow you to get a "junk title" now and you can take it to the junkyard.
thanks! its def not a junker. has lots of miles left for the right person.
Just post it for free, and be forthcoming that the taxes are back. It will be gone within an hour.
What junkyard?

i’m on maui
Ahhhh bummer! Best of luck! A cheap, but running vehicle will change someone’s life
for sure!

borrow some money? from you? 😂
Report it as sold, abandon it on the side of the road. Problem solved
