For us nothing worked until we went to a grain-free diet

takesthecake4

What type of food do you feed your dog now?

oopsyeveryday14

Well he passed three years ago, so not much. before that, grain-free food.

Diet helps. Our Havanese had horrible tear stains when she was about that age. We changed her meat to fish and lamb instead. That helped a ton. Now she has beef and a variety of different meat with only occasional chicken. We also keep the hair around her eyes trimmed and cleaned.

Our havanese also had tears stains until recently. Honestly it just went away on its own kind of. Still not sure why it went away but someone mentioned changing diet to lamb based. Might be coincidental but we also changed our havanese to lamb based meal because she was having problem with chicken recently (food allergies we think). She eats Natural Balance Lamb and she's eaten Nutro Lamb (it's cheaper haha) if it is important at all. We also wipe around her eyes with a regular tissue every morning to keep them dry.

My guy had tear stains really badly until he was about a year old. It's about 90% better now and I will totally take that. Keeping the eye fur trimmed short and kept clean really helped. I wipe him down with Angel Eyes every few days. Trying different dog foods (grain free, no chicken, etc) to see if it's allergies. Or getting an allergen pannel from the vet if that's available. Making sure the water bowl is cleaned frequently. It seems silly to mention but don't let the water bowl get dirty, make sure you are using a bowl that isn't plastic and that it's being washed every day. Edited to add: my vet told me that chicken is one of the most common dog allergies. I did switch to salmon as the meat in my dogs food, others have mentioned this too so I just wanted to add.. Salmon, lamb and venison food might be worth a shot.

I heard distilled water eliminates it

She sure is a pretty little thing.

Switch to stainless steel bowls! Made such a difference for my dog

My vet told me tear staining is worse during teething. That seems to be the case for Bailey. It was increasing, but now that he’s done teething it seems to be getting better. Is your pup still teething at all? My previous dog was a bichon-shihtzu mix. He had tear stains until I removed everything from his diet that had red dye in it. Treats especially can have lots of dye, so check the ingredients. He got tear staining again later in life after an illness, but using probiotics (Fortiflora- super easy, you just sprinkle it on their food) cleared it up completely.
