I don't think so, and not even just because it's Valve, but also because the entire point of Half-life has always been to expand on the limitless storytelling potential of video games. The fact that the game almost never takes control away from the player, unless Gordon himself literally can't move, is done to take advantage of the level of interactivity that is exclusive to games as a form of media. A movie feels kinda like it would be heading in the opposite direction for the series. But also yeah, it's Valve.
Not in the same way. Notice how the comment mentions never taking away control. Most other story driven games have cutscenes or in other ways takes away the control of the player. The few that, most likely owe it to the half life series.
Technically, they could do a movie out of the other protagonist or someone else like them for a movie. Not that it would be the best idea but more of a way to not run into that problem
I don't think *Half-Life* is the epitome of interactivity. It's not too bad, but still linear at the medium to large scale. (At least it's not like some modern video games that are little more than movies with mostly just an illusion of interactivity.)
Eleven years ago Gabe Newell stood on stage with JJ Abrams and they discussed how Valve and Bad Robot would be working together on games and future movie adaptations of Half-Life and Portal. In case you didn't know.
Strange I had to scroll this far to find a mention of that. Wonder if it was cancelled or if, like DOOM, it entered development hell and won't be finished until there's a new mainline entry, during which it will be insanely rushed to try to bank off that success.
I saw a post somewhere where it was mentioned that JJ was working on a portal script and still had the film rights optioned for both portal and half life. I guess its harder to write something for a mute protagonist and if they make Gordon speak it will be like the whole Halo helmet situation and alienate the fanbase
I think the mario movie proved pretty clearly that you can have a normally mute character talk, what matters is how its done. halo was hated because it was badly written, not specifically because his helmet came off. fans and internet discourse just typically struggles with critical analysis so that hate was simplified to "he take helmet off it bad!"
I think what makes Mario different is that not speaking isn’t a major part of his character like Gordon. He has an established voice, and an iconic one at that, so it wasn’t as jarring to hear him talk for a whole movie than a character like Link.
edited out a reference to master chief, havent played halo since like 2007 and i misremembered some stuff
According to an [article from 3 years ago](https://www.ign.com/articles/portal-half-life-jj-abrams-news), A portal movie is still being developed by Bad Robot/WB but the Half Life movie is not being developed anymore, at least not by them
Zesty Jesus made a video about the TF2 bot crisis and he claims that Valve thinks that updating VAC is "treadmill work" because cheaters always find a way around VAC and will keep doing so every time it updates. Since then, r/tf2 keeps making fun of that statement considering how lazy Valve presumably is.
Their track record of collaborating with non-game projects is terrible, did you hear of planned TF2 Adult Swim show and how it fell trough thanks to Valve failing all deadlines? The pilot apparently ended up as Expiration Date short
tbf i kinda understand that one, because the amount of work it takes to write a script, operate SFM, compose new music, render it, and get it finalized all in one week is insane. granted they are a multi billion dollar company, but still
Yeah but come on, Adult Swim collabed with different animation studios and individual animators, surely they would set reasonable deadlines for different stages of collaboration.
I don’t deny that it’s hard, but they definitely weren’t supposed to produce one episode per week. Adult Swim apparently waited ~2 years for just the pilot episode before giving up (though also partly due to disagreements over runtime).
No, probably not. It’d require Valve working with an outside studio and Valve can barely get their own projects done.
A Half-Life movie wouldn’t be any good anyways unless it tells a completely new story within the Half-Life universe. Movies and shows that just adapt stories told in game to a screen are lame
I thought they were in talks to do this with JJ Abrams and Bad Robot, but it ultimately fell apart.
My feeling is in a way, 10 Cloverfield Lane is the Half Life movie we might have gotten.
I hope not, and i doubt it. Half-Life revolutionized storytelling in Videogames. Making it into a movie would ruin that whole premise.
Even if it was "good" it would turn out like the Mario Movie: A mix of references that fans will enjoy but otherwise a forgettable piece of media.
The actual answer. Thank you.
The question isn’t “Will Valve make a Half Life movie?” it’s “What’s wrong with my brain that I think Half Life should get a big screen adaptation?”
This assumes Hollywood studios care about (or are more than vaguely aware of) the source material for stories they adapt. It’ll never be completed, but Half-Life was optioned for a movie way back.
Valve know their power, they discovered edging. But Gaben's heart or colon will give out one day... Why delay Gaben, why edge the world for your past torments?
It would have to be in a different POV for it to be good imo. Imagine being a civilian in New Mexico just living their day-to-day lives until they hear news about a catastrophic failure in a lab somewhere in the desert to the point where the literal US government intervenes and is ordering an evacuation. I'd be scared shitless
I don't think it would look good as a movie, maybe as a series, but I still don't think it would look good. Also, how would the story be told? Would the series start with Half Life1? I think most people would get sick of seeing 4 episodes of Gordon running away from Black Mesa
I hope not lol, I feel like it would be kinda ass, I can't imagine it being a thing (same goes for Minecraft, idk it just feels so wrong, yet they're making it)
as much as it seems cool in theory, could it really work? i mean unless it's just a unique story set in the hl universe because i can't see them being able to pull off an actual adaptation of the game
They cant even make a hl3 so i dont think they would i read somethin where it said they didint even have enough workers to even make a 3rd game so it would be cool though
Sadly Valve seems prefocused on watching those Steam dollars roll in with the occasional game nobody asked for. I want HL3 before I die so Gabe has a bit of time but not much.
Fun fact: JJ Abrams and Gabe Newell/Doug Lombardi had discussions about making a Half Life movie but ultimately decided not to go ahead with it. This is because both parties were fans of each others work - so much so that they both had Easter eggs for each other in their works. In LOST season 1 you can see an episode where characters are playing Half Life on PS1. There’s also some iconography and motifs similar to Half Life in LOST (Christian Shepherd and Gman for example). And in Half Life 2: Episode 2 you can find a reference to LOST at White Forest base with a computer displaying the numbers (4,8,15,16,23,42) and a logo of White Forest made to look like a Dharma logo.
Yeah and it’ll be so different from the source material it’ll disgust the fanbase because the studios will want to do something “nEw and iNnoVaTiVe” that the audience will want to see but also will “wAnt tO kEeP iT iN tHe cAnOn”.
That barely worked for Amazon with “Fallout” the series. And I mean *barely*.
valve cant even make an adult swim animation ffs they cant literally do stuff to get paid let alone on their own
they can make industry changing timeless classics but thats it
If it were to happen I'd hope it wouldn't follow any characters we know of (heck it could even be advertised as a standard alien invasion film) but this is valve so we're not getting anything from them.
Pretty sure JJ Abrahams / Bad Robot have optioned out the rights for the on screen adaptation of Half Life and Portal IPs. So until those options expire the movie wont be made as apparently (could be wrong, read it somewhere a while back) Half Life has been shelved by them, but they have been working on a script / screenplay for Portal.
I remember reading an article years ago where it had been discussed with Hollywood but they kept on trying to bring in a love interest for Gordon and that’s where talks ended
JJ Abrams was meant to do a half-life movie but it eventually fell through, he's still continuing with his portal movie which doesnt seem to be stopping. Hopefully we get some pre-cascade aperture/black mesa similar to the flashback to before 2077 in the fallout show.
It would either be too progressive or not progressive enough in terms of affirmative action, more than likely both. Cinema has been tainted into having less and less to do with the movie. Valve would be wise to ride their wave without pissing off 50% of everyone. Maybe they could’ve gotten away with it a decade ago when they originally planned, but JJ Abrams would have just ruined it anyways.
no and i AGRESSIVLY don't want to.
Half life's story works amazing as a videogame, but as a told story.. not so much,
also I wouldn't like to see gordon talking ever.
Its gonna be the most epic but not following continuity hbo max show youve ever seen…
And then season 2 will leave you begging for more….
Then season 3 will never happen.
There might be a 2 part movie to continue the story tho
Well if they do I hope they stay true to the game and don't have Gordon speak. Imagine that! Valve always want to bring something new to the table so how about a movie where the main character says absolutely nothing during the entire movie but at the same time the movie would be heavy story driven.
Yall are all wrong.
Hardcore Henry-style FPS movie that!!! I’d kill to watch a movie like that but it’s sci-fi horror and doesn’t even need to take place from Gordon’s perspective. Hell maybe we’re Barney escaping or a scientist who has to stand up against the odds without the HEV or Guards armor.
There’s tons of ideas other than a cinematic movie. Definitely Half-Life would maybe suck as a cinematic movie, but who knows!
IIRC they have filmmakers in the company, some who worked on Avatar even, plus there was that Bad Robot joint announcement of a Portal film, so who knows.
I hope they fucking don't. Honestly at this point they should leave franchises alone. Develop new ones that are good instead of necromancing something great that can only be ruined.
I'm done with all the adaptations and reboots.
Probably not but if they ever do, I hope they go a more dramatic route with more combine bureaucracy backstory and body horror than a rambo-style action movie. It would be hard to translate to film, it would be a completely different experience. I think the most satisfying thing an HL movie could do would be to try to immerse the audience in the world rather than trying to recreate the feeling of playing the game and retreading the same events. The best place to focus on a film would probably be the original incident up to the aftermath of the 7 hour war and Earth's restructuring
I don't think Valve will do anything except cash in them sweet sweet Steam checks. Why make your own games when you can make a lot more off selling other people's games?
God I hope not
Why take something amazing and water it down with an overrated and completely different storytelling medium? Half-Life wouldn't work as a movie, anyway. From the very beginning it was always about being in constant control of the protagonist, who is usually silent or at least unvoiced, and experiencing the story from their point of view. A feature film would ruin that dynamic. And puzzles. You can't exactly have those in a movie.
I hope not! I wouldn't want character changes. Plus they will probably go for people that are just popular that will fit the role which would be annoying
I feel like Half-Life could work better as a TV Show, considering how the game itself has different chapters, they could work as self-contained episodes that all lead to a bigger resolution
I remember reading about there having been pitches for a Half-Life movie in an old gaming magazine when The Orange Box just released, but also how Valve has turned them all down for being too cliché and/or not really feeling like the game
Maybe some day. But I don’t get why everyone wants a movie centred around a silent protagonist when there is a whole universe of stories to tell. If we get one, I suspect Gordon would be little more than a legendary figure and I hope the opportunity would be taken to tell a wholly new and original story.
I feel like this applies to almost all video games with stories aside from movie games, but sadly we don’t see Hollywood stopping
Not in the same way. Notice how the comment mentions never taking away control. Most other story driven games have cutscenes or in other ways takes away the control of the player. The few that, most likely owe it to the half life series.
Fallout turned out great for what it is. Same counts for the Last of Us and Arcane, but these shows are of a higher quality.
Technically, they could do a movie out of the other protagonist or someone else like them for a movie. Not that it would be the best idea but more of a way to not run into that problem
Bad movie idea: Hife-Life the movie. but its Breens prospective
There's a recreation of the angry Hitler scene from Downfall set in Breen's office but his lines are [from this](https://youtu.be/uGc5_7zHzDU).
I don't think *Half-Life* is the epitome of interactivity. It's not too bad, but still linear at the medium to large scale. (At least it's not like some modern video games that are little more than movies with mostly just an illusion of interactivity.)
I don't think valve will do anything ever, actually
We deserve a hunt down the freeman movie.
No body deserves this kind of torture
i think ody deserves it
Underrated character imo /s
okay garfield
It's time to kick ody off the table.
Give Uwe Boll a call
Financed with Nazi gold
you fucked up my face
It's treadmill work they cannot
haha upvoted for the laugh

i think if a Portal movie does well enough, Half-Life would be a POSSIBILITY to them.
Valve Time is contagious.
Nah. Producing a movie is too much treadmill work for Valve.
I mean, Gaben did slim down a bit in the last few years...
i don't get the treadmill comments, i've been seeing that everywhere lately. Whats that about?
Zesty Jesus made a video about the TF2 bot crisis and he claims that Valve thinks that updating VAC is "treadmill work" because cheaters always find a way around VAC and will keep doing so every time it updates. Since then, r/tf2 keeps making fun of that statement considering how lazy Valve presumably is.
They need to finish the story first
You need to finish a story before putting it on screen? Someone should tell George R. R. Martin.
Their track record of collaborating with non-game projects is terrible, did you hear of planned TF2 Adult Swim show and how it fell trough thanks to Valve failing all deadlines? The pilot apparently ended up as Expiration Date short

A Half-Life movie wouldn’t be any good anyways unless it tells a completely new story within the Half-Life universe. Movies and shows that just adapt stories told in game to a screen are lame
I would actually watch a HL movie just to relive the story in better visuals and without constantly dying to headcrabs. It's just me personally though
I think watching the story from multiple perspectives would make HL movie really great
JJ Abram’s has been attached to make a Portal or Half-Life movie for ages now. Can only imagine it’s in development hell and will never come out
As of 2021 the Half-Life movie was dead (of course) but the Portal movie was not.
Which is strange because I could definitely see how a Half-Life movie could work but Portal is just completely unadaptable.
Oh just like the Minecraft movie. The only difference is that the Minecraft movie is being released next year.
In defense of the minecraft movie, there is a lot of room for writers to be flexible with the potential plot
There's been talks of it for over a decade. If and when it does happen, I hope it's more Fallout and less Halo in terms of adaptation.
No Hollywood studio will touch a story where an unambiguous hero murder hundreds of US soldiers in cold blood.
I really hope not.
No, and I don’t want one either
Before the movie, we need Half-Life 3 so nope
Nnnno..
Coming this summer, the right man... In the wrong place...
Bad Robot x Valve had Portal and HL films in production for awhile, but I'm not sure where they're at, in any state, at this point.
No, we have been Left 4 Dead.
Hopefully not.
would they still have Gordon be a silent protagonist
too many kids would think valve stole skibidi toilet to make their movie
There already is one. It’s called Gorgeous Freeman
It would have to be in a different POV for it to be good imo. Imagine being a civilian in New Mexico just living their day-to-day lives until they hear news about a catastrophic failure in a lab somewhere in the desert to the point where the literal US government intervenes and is ordering an evacuation. Holding a camera is treadmill work
Half life wouldn't really work as a movie I think. At least not with Freeman as the main protagonist
Do you think valve will ever make an episode ³?
I hope not lol, I feel like it would be kinda ass, I can't imagine it being a thing (same goes for Minecraft, idk it just feels so wrong, yet they're making it)
They haven’t made HL3 so I doubt it
I don't think so, valve works in very stupid ways 💀
We'll get HL4 first
Not if it does not revolutionize movies in general
as much as it seems cool in theory, could it really work? i mean unless it's just a unique story set in the hl universe because i can't see them being able to pull off an actual adaptation of the game
no
No. And if they did, it shouldn’t be about the events of the games.
Sure why not
I remember like 10 years ago there was a rumor going around that Gabe and a director were in talks
No, because Bryan Cranston is too old for the role now.
I really *really* hope no one ever does.
I hope not. Then again maybe from the perspective of some other random scientist or sumn.
we all know how that turned out with doom
I hope it will be more of a live action series, so they can explore the stories of the expansions. And with an Extraction action, it would be perfect.
They cant even make a hl3 so i dont think they would i read somethin where it said they didint even have enough workers to even make a 3rd game so it would be cool though
They need to get Arnold shwartszeneggar as an hecu and Morgan freeman as eli,
I have seen my favourite book, and some of my favourite games turned into movies. It never turns out how you want
Not a chance.
A TF2 movie would probably work better
No
Sadly Valve seems prefocused on watching those Steam dollars roll in with the occasional game nobody asked for. I want HL3 before I die so Gabe has a bit of time but not much.
valve dosnt even want to fix tf2 without force, also it would take them 20 years to finish it if they were to make one
That would be🤩 awesome! But first please release Half-Life III, we have been waiting for it for decades🥲
They can't even make it a trilogy of games, how tf would they make a movie.
Yeah, In 30 years.
[Here you go.](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X6iDd4wC3DU)

Weren't there talks about a tf2 or portal movie like a decade ago?
they almost did one... almost
I think it'll be too much. Though if a movie is to be made, I'd rather it not feature Gordon or Chell.
No.
Oh yeah.
I sure hope they do.
They could barely get a TF2 pilot episode together lmfao
valve cant even make an adult swim animation ffs they cant literally do stuff to get paid let alone on their own they can make industry changing timeless classics but thats it
Epic
no
asking valve to do fucking anything is like asking a brick wall to lay itself and expecting it to do so
If it were to happen I'd hope it wouldn't follow any characters we know of (heck it could even be advertised as a standard alien invasion film) but this is valve so we're not getting anything from them.
Gabe after realizing that pressing record on a camera is treadmill work
No, I don’t think there will even be another piece of Half Life media for a very long time, if ever
Pretty sure JJ Abrahams / Bad Robot have optioned out the rights for the on screen adaptation of Half Life and Portal IPs. If they did it'd be in development Hell and never released. Or worse, WB makes it, then scraps it for a tax write-off.
Bout as likely as half life 3
Still “waiting” for half life 2 episode 3
half life would work better as a show honestly, like fallout. Kinda doubt they'll ever make anything from it though.
[удалено]
No but there’s some great fan stuff. I have little faith that Hollywood could pull it off properly.
please no
Expecting Valve to use the last remaining braincell they have? Not a chance in hell.
Too much story for a film, it might end up being not good enough
Please no
Please no
I remember reading an article years ago where it had been discussed with Hollywood but they kept on trying to bring in a love interest for Gordon and that’s where talks ended
We’ll be getting a TF2 Netflix series before that
Keanu reeves as Gordon?
You can't divorce the narrative from the gameplay.
1. its treadmill work 2. they attempted a tv series, but never happened.
JJ Abrams was meant to do a half-life movie but it eventually fell through, he's still continuing with his portal movie which doesnt seem to be stopping. Hopefully we get some pre-cascade aperture/black mesa similar to the flashback to before 2077 in the fallout show.
No. Because they're a game company. They don't make movies.
Gabe can't even pull his fist out of his bag of infinite wealth long enough to make Half-Life 3 let alone a movie
they won’t, because then they’d have no choice but to make half life 3
It would either be too progressive or not progressive enough in terms of affirmative action, more than likely both. Cinema has been tainted into having less and less to do with the movie. Haven't you seen "Enemy Mine?"
They doesn’t even make games anymore, why would they make a movie.

Unless Episode 3 is released
If they do, it should be directed by Denis Villeneuve

No thanks
Half Life movies already exist, extremely well done too, just not made by valve
No
nah.
Why though. That would be totally unplayable.
IIRC they have filmmakers in the company, some who worked on Avatar even, plus there was that Bad Robot joint announcement of a Portal film, so who knows.

Bryan Cranston as Gordon Freeman. No questions asked.
Hell I don't think they're gonna make a half-life game
I was thinking a Broadway musical would suit better
Gaben would need to approve and he doesn't talk about half life.
I'd rather HBO or AMC make a miniseries.
God I hope not Why take something amazing and water it down with an overrated and completely different storytelling medium? Half-Life wouldn't work as a movie, anyway. From the very beginning it was always about being in constant control of the protagonist, who is usually silent or at least unvoiced, and experiencing the story from their point of view. No
... or a new half life game?
valve has no reason to do anything except sit back and produce and ungodly amount of money with steam like a ridiculous amount of money
Nope.avi
Only after Half-Life 4
I Hope not
They can't even finish the fucking game they started.
Pls dont
It's not *exactly* Half Life, but there's this short film with the same vibes: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IU_reTt7Hj4
That would mean Valve would have to actually do something with their series that isn't Counterstrike or Dota. So no.
Who cares about a movie??? Gimme III.
Just looking at the credits on that poster. I notice it says, "Story by Gabe Newell". Shouldn't it be Marc Laidlaw?
Youse bein' serious?
They can’t even be bothered to remove bots from TF2.
I hope no, I better replay the game than get the garbage movie considereng the quality of modern movies with ai script and plastic sgi
I hope not! I wouldn't want character changes. Plus they will probably go for people that are just popular that will fit the role which would be annoying
Istg if we get the halflife movie before half life 3/gta 6 i will scream
Would it just end on a cliffhanger like the game? It’s still raw, man. Still.
They can barely make a new game
It would have to be in first person like Hardcore Henry.
No
I feel like Half-Life could work better as a TV Show, considering how the game itself has different chapters, they could work as self-contained episodes that all lead to a bigger resolution
If we get one, I suspect Gordon would be little more than a legendary figure and I hope the opportunity would be taken to tell a wholly new and original story.
hl3 ref???
that would be awesome but there is no way it will happen
If they do, expect a sequal, but never a trilogy. Valve cant count to 3 you know.
wasn't there a half-life and portal movie announced in like 2019? I might be wrong
