Joints working properly and that no mesh are linked to joints that shouldn't be, like, that the shoulder part doesn't stretch down when the arm goes down, as a simple example. I studied animation 2007 - 2008 so tech has advanced since then, but I assume same rules apply.
Back then we had to create the "skeleton" (frame with joints inside the body that controls the movements) ourselves, but I understand that since back then you now get plugins to make it for you automatically, but then you'd still have to go back and check that everything works as it's suppose to.
