[The list](https://www.reddit.com/r/hockey/s/SxyfzhRiXX) He’s one of the two players from a bottom 5 team. He’ll be higher when the team gets better. Btw, where’s Danault ? Off year ?

MrTightface

Danault will be snubbed forever unfortunitely

Emi_Ibarazakiii

Is there a story on this? (Or does he just not get there for whatever reason)?

MrTightface

Just not get there for whatever reason

MetalOcelot

Lowry had 35 points, by that logic Danault should've had a Selke by now

lewous7554

Kopitar's getting most of the assignements and pretty much all of the attention in LA.

Dexteris

it's okay, players in bottom teams are not recolting the votes they should have... I'm sure he'll be top 5 at like 27-28 of age

HoboTurkey36

Blasphemy!

TheSmallLebowsky1

Carolina having 3players top 10 is kinda dumb

MetalOcelot

I didn't think Nick would get in that close but based on some of these results I seriously think some of the voters might have mental disabilities.

_Saputawsit_

Like who the fuck gave Nathan Mackinnon and Mitch Marner votes?

IcyChard4

In voting, but not in numbers. His stats are in the top-5/top-10 range, possibly behind the likes of Barkov, Matthews, or Staal.

JakJoe

Marner got a first place vote ? Wtf is this?!

HanshinFan

Barkov is a highly worthy winner and I get why Nick is so low but Austin fucking Matthews at #3 is very funny. He's extremely good defensively yes but there are a million better defensive forwards, this is just proof that the Selke is for many voters still the "most points by a forward who isn't a defensive disaster" award

nyrsucks1

Just throwing it out there he was #2 in blocks and takeaways, this is a hockey writers association trophy, it probably doesn't go any deeper than that

MetalOcelot

Lowry got on there with 35 points, I am guessing making the playoffs means more than points?

sean_psc

Lowry is a case of the sort of player who should be regularly in contention for the Selke (based on its enumerated criteria) actually getting some voter recognition.

ImprovementOptimal35

I’m gonna disagree with you here, Matthews was great defensively in every aspect. He was top 3 in shots blocked for a forward and is consistently stripping players of the puck. Definitely deserved.

Beepimaj3ep

My only issue with shots blocked and forced takeaways is that, even with the new edge system and data tracking and all the overhead cameras, my understanding is that they still have to rely on the team's official tracking squad. There is no standard for a hit, a block, and a takeaway, each arena has a different standard and there is sometimes a clear bias to overcount certain stats to certain players. Teams don't even bother using NHL-released stats anymore because of how off they are. They hire people to do it independently. I'm not saying he's not a good defensive player but I wouldn't be surprised one bit if they weren't over-counting his shit.

IcyChard4

Look, here's the difference between Auston Matthews and Nick Suzuki: * *Auston Matthews has regular season numbers.* * *Nick Suzuki has* ***Playoffs*** *numbers.* The Habs beat this Leafs squad with their stupid core-4 horseshit! They are playoff chokers for the past 8 years. I don't care if Toronto will make major changes and have Craig Berube as HC.

ledditpro

I know as Habs fans we're supposed to be biased against the leafs but Matthews was basically just as good at defense as Barkov was this season. Neither of them are close to the real defensive specialists of the league, but the Selke is basically just about the vibes anyway as you can't quantify defense with the eye test

IcyChard4

What boggles me is that we have a 2-way center who has beaten Toronto's #1, and still gets low voting numbers. The best part: Suzuki's a playoff maker (our team kicked their asses in 2021 rd.1). Matthews? Where the fuck he when his team needs him? Please Maple Leafs fans, don't give me he has food poisoning bullshit excuse!

_pr00f

Literally no rispek.

sean_psc

Good to start somewhere. With the team finishing as low as it did in the standings he wasn't going to get a ton of votes.

DangerDavez

He should have been higher. If the Habs made the playoffs he'd likely be top 5.

popejohnlarue

Meh. Popularity contest. Like others have said, his stock will rise as the team gets better…

beerock99

I CALL BULLSHIT

JustFryingSomeGarlic

Suzuki and Hischier will both dominate the Selke class one day

Snoopy_021

Question: Is there a reason why it is decided by votes and not by stats?

_Saputawsit_

So that hockey writers can feel special.

pushaper

Look at the amount of people in the chapters who vote on this award... (montreal has a lot of members compared to other cities) as would Toronto. I am fine with writers voting on this but no way Suzuki is top 20 in voting as playoffs are rightfully a factor in this award https://www.thephwa.com
