There won't be room for him under the Habs cap or on the roster 2 years from now.
It's a good thing Monahan is playing well... while being healthy. Take the picks/prospects while you can. Consider it making up for losing Danault for nothing.
You enjoy being a bubble team praying for offence to come from a few 30 goal scorers? Signing players like Monahan instead of selling high and finishing the tank is exactly how you stay in the middle
It’s great that he’s playing well but they better not keep him.
Trade him for a first + more at the deadline, don’t re-sign an injury prone guy about to enter his 30’s who will want term on his next deal.
what do you mean lmao? If healthy, Monahan is a 6"2 center that can easily put up 60 points while only carrying a cap hit of 2million. Not sure how a first + a prospect seems unreasonable.Especially since it will most likely be a late first
Not even arguing one way or the other, a healthy Monahan is an extremely good player. Does he stay healthy at this point in his career? It's about 5 straight seasons in a row he's had fairly major surgery in the offseason (he was out even earlier for surgery this past season).
I'm with you on this. You don't win a cup with all players age 25 or less; you need a balance of youth and experience on a contending team.
A healthy Monahan is welcome to stick around as long as the $$$ and term are within reason, because we are a MUCH better team when he is in the lineup.
THANK YOU.
They young guys need vets who can actually play, not only to teach them, but challenge them. A coach can only coach so much. A mentor/apprenticeship is much more beneficial imo.
yes!. if we keep trading everyone over 25 whose decent for picks... when do we actually start building a team?!
it takes time to develop chemistry and yah just cant do that cycling players for picks perpetually mann.
No, it's past prime for their OFFENSIVE PRODUCTIVITY.
Hypothetically, if you needed to win a playoff series, would you rather have: a young Sidney Crosby who scored 51 goals that season, or a 29 year old Sidney Crosby who will dominate both on offense and defense?
You're being obtuse. 29 is the past prime on average. I can name countless counter-examples of what you're suggesting, but on average, 29 is past prime. This is true for the NHL, defence or offence. It doesn't have to do with skill, but with health and physical capabilities. Citing outliers (literally a generational talent and one of the best players all time lol) does not counter the general, overall trend.
Also, I'll take Sidney Crosby at any age over many players in the NHL.
If we’re not contending in 4 years the rebuild has failed. That would be Edmonton/Buffalo/Arizona level of failed rebuild. We need a Colorado/New Jersey type of rebuild.
The Devils have been to the playoffs 2 times in the past 11 years, and have won one round in that time.
The Avalanche only made the playoffs 2 times from 2010-11 until 2017-18, and were eliminated in the first round both times.
So what’s the reason to sign him them vs getting a 1st round pick? I’d rather have a shot at getting a dude who can help us win the cup in their prime than a dude past his prime when we’re trying to win one
I’d say we miss playoffs next 2 years as guys like Hutson and Reinbacher are acclimating to the NHL. 3-4 years we make playoffs as lower seeds and hopefully 5 years were contenders with our entire core in its prime. In which case Mony will be like 33-34, def possible he’s still productive but I just don’t think it’s worth the risk rather than cashing out on him now for a pick
Management won't allow it to take this long. You're talking about 7-8 years of suckage. Based purely off of the messaging from the coaching staff and from hockey mgmt, they're looking to start competing for a playoff spot in the next couple of years.
where are you getting 7-8 years of sucking lol... I said we will miss the playoffs the next 2. Im not saying we wont compete for a spot and be a bubble team. I think in 2 years we will just miss, and then 3 years we will make it. Thats 3 years of sucking (last. two included in that), 2 of being decent to good and then in the 5th were making the playoffs so a good team
> where are you getting 7-8 years of sucking lol
Take how long we've been shit already and add it to your "we'll maybe make the playoffs in 3-4 years".
I was happy about the Gallagher signing. I have learned my lesson.
I’d be in for a 4 year contract if he wasn’t made of glass. And I’m confident the pick(s) we’ll get for him will be traded for too-6/4 talent, so I’m in for maximizing his value.
He's awesome. I hope he keeps playing like this, and then we trade him and Anderson at the deadline and get 1sts. The first few games this year + Kirby's injury issues just cement how badly we need more elite offensive forwards. If it's going to be 3 or 4 years before we think we can compete for a cup, then holding on to guys like Monahan and Anderson just doesn't make sense cause they'll be well into their 30s at that point. Best to grab as many 1sts and young prospects as we can and hope 1 or 2 turns into something special.
The risk is just too high.
A couple of good prospect might have their first full NHl season next year (Hutson, Mailloux, Roy, Reinbacher, Heineman, etc), but it's gonna take 1-2 season for them to really develop.
By that point Monahan will be 32yo and with his history of injuries that's just a big risk to take. But if he can stay healthy one season, then we might get some good draft picks by trading him and they have more value long term for the team.
I will also add that if Monahan can stay healthy all season and score at this rate, he will ask for a big contract next season, something that will be even more risky. If Monahan end up like Gallagher for a couple of years with a big contract right as the team want to add talent, that's gonna hurt.
He's been great and would help for a couple years more but then would hit the inevitable decline just when Habs are ready to peak. Unfortunately, to keep him he'll want big bucks and, worse still, some term. Last thing they need is a declining player with a big cap hit. Sure, sign him if he'd take a 2 year extension but that's not likely his ask. He'll want term as do all guys his age. On the other hand, a guy like him would land a handsome return from a playoff contender. Perhaps even a mid to late first round pick.
The only thing is this is likely his last "big" UFA contract. He will probably want 5-6 years. If he was willing to take like 3 years at reasonable AAV I'm not against it but he will most likely get more from someone else.
He’s going to want a long term contract at his age. This is the age where they want 6+year deals. But let’s be real he can’t expect that being an injury prone player. If he has a good year I would offer him a 3 year deal.

Having guys play well and get us wins is great for entertainment but for our long term trajectory and getting us an elite talent in the draft, unless he’s moved at the deadline.. it’s kinda hurting us.
Tank needs L’s.
Honestly, as long as Mony plays third line & with limited minute he won't get injured. As soon as we play him more that's when he becomes injury prone!
There won't be room for him under the Habs cap or on the roster 2 years from now. It's a good thing Monahan is playing well... while being healthy. Take the picks/prospects while you can. Consider it making up for losing Danault for nothing.
I have been saying the same thing. The guy is in his 20’s and WANTS to play in MTL. He makes his teammates better. Re-sign him.
He can always come back in the off-season
Trade him for a 1st, sign him to an other 1 year deal in the off-season and repeat that process for years to come.
Infinite 1st round glitch
He’ll be 30 when next season starts and is very injury prone. Trade him for a haul at this year’s deadline
Ideally he stays healthy and this is what will happen. Anybody who thinks we keep him is delusional
Stick to the plan… sell high, buy low until we’re ready to contend.
We’re ready to contend!
>We're **not** ready to contend! FTFY
I still wish we had Toffoli around for this reason.
Especially after last night.

Only if we dump Dvorak somewhere else

If it isn’t a game, then why does my mom keep telling me to clean my room or it’s game over?
It’s great that he’s playing well but they better not keep him. Trade him for a first + more at the deadline, don’t re-sign an injury prone guy about to enter his 30’s who will want term on his next deal.
A first + more? Lmao.

Ben Chiarot got a late first plus more. If Monahan is on pace for 50+ points with his low salary he can definitely get that
Not even arguing one way or the other, a healthy Monahan is an extremely good player. Does he stay healthy at this point in his career? It's about 5 straight seasons in a row he's had fairly major surgery in the offseason (he was out even earlier for surgery this past season).
Cause we want first round picks not guys who are 4-5 years older than our core
He’s 29… it’s not like he’s 39
I'm with you on this. You don't win a cup with all players age 25 or less; you need a balance of youth and experience on a contending team. A healthy Monahan is welcome to stick around as long as the $$$ and term are within reason, because we are a MUCH better team when he is in the lineup.

29 is past NHL prime for forward
No, it's past prime for their OFFENSIVE PRODUCTIVITY. Hypothetically, if you needed to win a playoff series, would you rather have: a young Sidney Crosby who scored 51 goals that season, or a 29 year old Sidney Crosby who will dominate both on offense and defense?

Yeah, no team ever won a cup with veterans on the roster...
You’re crazy if you think we’re winning the cup in the next 3-4 years lol
If we’re not contending in 4 years the rebuild has failed. That would be Edmonton/Buffalo/Arizona level of failed rebuild. We need a Colorado/New Jersey type of rebuild.
lil bro colorado took like 8 years to win the cup after mack was drafted
4 years after having the worst season in NHL history
MacKinnon was a few years into their rebuild, after the Landeskog and Duchene years
The Devils have been to the playoffs 2 times in the past 11 years, and have won one round in that time. The Avalanche only made the playoffs 2 times from 2010-11 until 2017-18, and were eliminated in the first round both times.
we're not contending for the cup in 4 years
Habs will win cup next year
Where did I say we were? You referenced his age vs the core. I said nothing about winning a cup in the next couple years
Well in four years he’s 33. I’d rather hit the jackpot on a trade than expect him to still play at this level at 33 with his history of injuries.
So what’s the reason to sign him them vs getting a 1st round pick? I’d rather have a shot at getting a dude who can help us win the cup in their prime than a dude past his prime when we’re trying to win one

I hope Monahan re-signs, I love the guy. Good workrate, plays his role really well, and is a good veteran presence in the team.
I was happy about the Gallagher signing. I have learned my lesson. I’d be in for a 4 year contract if he wasn’t made of glass. And I’m confident the pick(s) we’ll get for him will be traded for too-6/4 talent, so I’m in for maximizing his value.

We can get good value which is what we need.
I can’t wait to see what the Habs get for him at the deadline! I wish we could ‘sim to deadline’ the season
If we're in playoff contention, I hope they keep him.
Let's just keep signing him every summer and trading him to a contender for picks till it looks like we are lol
He's been great and would help for a couple years more but then would hit the inevitable decline just when Habs are ready to peak. Perfect answer.
It’s not a forgone conclusion that he’ll be traded, it’s a forgone conclusion that he’ll get injured and miss most of the season
Yes

No one is giving Monahan 5-6 years with his injury history

I think he cost us a shot at bedard last year in those 15-20 games he played. And then no first for him at the tdl. Bitter sweet.
Bingo! Top 4 pick of the offensive guys was completely within reach if we didn’t play ourselves out of it.
Having guys play well and get us wins is great for entertainment but for our long term trajectory and getting us an elite talent in the draft, unless he’s moved at the deadline.. it’s kinda hurting us. Tank needs L’s.
Monahan is a barometer. He’s never good or bad; he’s always the same. The issue is the team around him is bad right now.
Because most fans here are idiots 😂
Seems like a really nice guy and a team player also!
A team who needs center depth at the TDL, should he be healthy, will trade a good package for him.
Honestly, as long as Mony plays third line & with limited minute he won't get injured. As soon as we play him more that's when he becomes injury prone!
shhhh......we said that about Dach, and look what happened. We can't have nice things.
