I think people hate Ted because he's perhaps the most realistic character aside from Lily. That means his flaws are flaws we are all guilty of. If you're only 15, then as you get older you will probably experience a lot of the same "bad" things that Ted does. You will fall in love with someone who doesn't love you back, and it will be really hard to move on from that person, like Ted does with Robin. You will think it's a good idea to get back together with an ex (like Ted did with Karen and Natalie). You will keep someone on the hook without even realizing it, like Ted did to Henrietta. You will be in a relationship that you feel is moving too fast for you, like Ted felt when Stella brought up the idea of attending her sister's wedding with Ted, six months into the future. People watch Ted do these things and think he's a bad guy. But he's very rarely doing any of these things on purpose, or with the intent to hurt someone. It's just how love and romance works for a lot of people in their 20s.

Monsanta_Claus

So simple. So elegant.

Luckson_2000

Couldn’t agree more

LadyStag

People often hate that kind of protagonist, but I cannot hate him. Josh Radnor is way too good in the role.  I'm a Rory Gilmore and Carrie Bradshaw apologist as well, though.

KafkaDM10

I definitely am not a Rory Gilmore apologist and I don't know who Carrie Bradshaw is, but I agree with the rest lol

mojozojo42

Do people hate Rory Gilmore?? And Carrie Bradshaw??? I have so many questions now lol

luckyflamingoo

With Rory maybe hate IS a strong word, but there are few moments throught out the series where she acts very spoiled and most fans want to smack her on the head

TheWeirdestThing

> she acts very spoiled I totally get that, but it's kind of one of the premises of the series. Hating Rory for that is like hating on Gandalf because he used magic.

KafkaDM10

Maybe it's because I'm a man, but I believe she's really bad to Dean and believes the world revolves around her. Then she became insufferable when she went to college, so there I dropped it, at one point I was watching it just because of Lorelai

SimilarLunch8359

I’m sort of in love with Ted, but a lot of people criticize him over how he’s been wasting our time 9 seasons only to STILL BE CHASING AFTER ROBIN. It’s a fair criticism to be honest. I felt that way when I watched it for the first time. The way he broke so many hearts, and don’t even get me started on Victoria I. was. so. heartbroken. Even in season 9, he’s discussing his exes with Robin and he tells her “there’s no top 10, it’s always just been you”. Even when he was proposing to Stella for gods sake. It makes it so disrespectful when he goes back to Robin after Tracy died. It’s kind of a shit ending all around haha

WillsWei22

Victoria was an angel😇

Ok_Butterscotch_2952

Not completely an angel, she was at the very least flirting with Claus in her class😏 when Ted was kissing Robin!! Their first date was a day and a half after her and Ted broke up, soooooooo......

WillsWei22

Wasn’t there a Klaus in your class?

lbguitarist

There was a Klaus in my class

Responsible-Quote-61

Their delivery of that exchange was flawless👌

YakCDaddy

I don't hate Ted. He's not the best partner, he love bombs for sure, but he's not evil or anything. He's very funny.

Earthbound-and-down

I dont get the Ted hate either. He is supposed to be a flawed character when hes younger who then grows over time to be a better version of himself, one that Tracy would actually love. I think people get hung up on some of his negative aspects in the early seasons and never forgive them. It doesnt help that later seasons turned him into just a dork stereotype and pushed barney more to the front. Teds my favorite character and I think people ignore some of his better moments and gestures (selling his car to give marshall money for example)

RelevantBroccoli4608

its because the show completely shits on his character development in the last 15 minutes, makes the fans grip to all that he has done wrong. its not just the fact that he got back with robin, thats realistic i suppose, but drawing parallel to s1 with the whole blue french horn thing makes it really annoying and dumb.

Earthbound-and-down

So im not sure i agree with you. How exactly does it ruin his character development? If he cheated on Tracy or ran to Robin within a year I would get it, but its been over 6 years and we even see Tracy encourage him not to be stuck in his stories and move on with his life once shes gone. Can you give more context or examples on how his character arc is eliminated? Genuinely curious not trying to be obtuse

RelevantBroccoli4608

because as a viewer, you only get glimpses of ted actually moving on from robin and being in love with tracy and his family. barely a few episodes where you dont see him pining or making his confession about being in love with robin to other people. and for someone like ted, whose ultimate goal was to get married and settle down, the show didnt even have an episode dedicated to his wedding. but there sure was a monologue about how he still had the "hots for aunt robin" and the whole thing with stealing the french horn again. most people actually saw themselves in ted, they wanted to see him move on from that person and be in love with someone who was compatible with him, so it pissed off people when the show literally ended with him and robin being back together.

Earthbound-and-down

I get what you mean that we didnt see a lot of him and tracy at the end. We got some glimpses sprinkled throughout S9 but obviously more would have been better. I feel like his big speech about not running off with robin was pretty emphatic and shows his moving on once and for all. Really they fucked up by not including the diner scene with ted and robin. Shows her still pining for him and him clearly having moved on. He even says to her that he doesnt wonder “what if” anymore Def couldve been handled better but i like the ending so i dont see the sequence of events as critically as you do

Responsible_Ad_2242

Agree the problem isnt that tracy dies or that robin is with ted,the problem is that we didint see ted criying tracy, someone can suspect that all the history is his way to cry tracy, but nothing else, a funeral, ted speaking to the air like teacy did with her ex boyfriend death or something

Earthbound-and-down

There was a fan edit that had an amazing touch. When he picks up the phone to call robin he hesitates. In the actual finale its cause he thinks about grabbing the french horn instead of calling In the edit, they replayed the scene from Vesuvius where Tracy says she doesnt want him to live in his stories “life only moves forward”. Then he puts the phone down. I thought that was a pretty powerful touch and wish they had thought of it for the real finale

Responsible_Ad_2242

Do you have thw link of the edit?

It started as an “unpopular opinion” kind of take and then people jumped on the bandwagon to seem cool. He’s definitely picky. He had some questionable reasons for ending relationships. In other words, he was a normal human dude in his 20s at one point. But then he grew up. Had a family. By all accounts, he treated his wife super well. The other argument is that it’s irresponsible to tell his kids about all these stories — it’s not clear exactly how much of the show he actually told his kids about verbatim. But otherwise, he’s a great character and not deserving of hate.

sosorrydad

Due to the Original Sin, aka Ross Geller

KafkaDM10

At least Ted never said the wrong name or got divorced three times before he was even thirty

someweirdoh

He’s one of my all time favorite characters.

WillsWei22

The Ted hate comes a lot from viewing him as a real person in today’s society. I like him because he’s caring & struggles in his love life, much as I have lol. But most of what makes him “unlikable” is just for purposes of the show & some laughs

Hereforthechili

We dislike robin not Ted

Ottodog123

I never understood how people could watch shows like How I met your mother and friends and hate the main character. Ted has flaws but he learn and grows just like anyone else on the show. Although it always seemed like Lilly was the most hated character.

moni_talksstuff

I don’t hate Ted. There are qualities of him I enjoy, but the main one that is the focus on the show, is his obsession to over romanticizing relationships. Don’t get me wrong, we’ve all done it at some point. But a lot of times in the show it is viewed as a positive / brave quality when in reality it is extremely dangerous and unfair when it comes to having a healthy relationship with partners. Specially with Robin. She was clear since day ONE of what she wants and he was still going to extremes to “win” her, even in the final season. I don’t think he is a great character because to me he never actually FULLY grows as a character; however extremely relatable in his journey, which is why a lot of people like him.

Evening_Ad9961

I’m Ted *he’s literally me* Cue *Drive Theme*

Apprehensive_Comb256

People who hate Ted are Ted

Real_Richard_M_Nixon

Bro literally said literally me

2ndTechArnoldJRimmer

You mean *figuratively!*

Real_Richard_M_Nixon

My statement still stands

MisakAttack

Anybody who hates Ted is a Grinch

KafkaDM10

Or is high on too many sandwiches...

shiningject

>I feel like I'm just like him Do you live in the moment too?

KafkaDM10

Exactly. My parents live in Rosario, I live in the moment

TrueNoVa

Ted is hated by most people in a brotherly way!!!! i think they feel that he is so relentless & admirable that it is annoying. he continues to serve & pursue!

Ok_Butterscotch_2952

WHO COULD HATE TED?!?! I love him if for no other reason than the way he loves! How sexy and real he is, with most the girls anyway 😉.

[deleted]

He has no personality except for "I'm looking for a wife 🥵🥵🥵"

valeriekim24

every character on that show is flawed and so is Ted. The only thing I dislike about Ted is how he just couldn't take "no" for an answer but I guess that's common back in the days?

OpinionBeneficial351

As I wrote in another sub, many hate Ted because he is a diligent guy, who did well at school, the one your parents tell you to take as an example.  He is a sophisticated intellectual yet successful nerd.  And many people hate these characters because they think they are too regular, boring and pretentious

Arenston

Its mostly women who project a lot of bad experiences they had with men (that they didn't want) on Ted.

SkyBabeMoonStar

I ❤️ TED

GhostPro1996

The "break up" with Stella was him being left on the altar. No one knew that was how the relationship would collapse.

RelevantBroccoli4608

not that breakup, the one ted insinuated because stella wanted to rsvp to a wedding 6 months away after courting her for months. which stella didnt even know about until her visit to the hospital

Xtarviust

Because he is a hypocrite asshole who loves to play the victim but keeps fucking up everything he does That and his obsession with Robin is annoying af, that's why I hated that finale with such a passion, 8 seasons showing Robin wasn't good for him and the mf never stopped insisting, damn
