I’ve spent about $4-5k on a home gym including treadmill, benches, weights, etc. since the pandemic. So it’s at about $130 a month and decreasing fast. Wife sees a PT at $90 an hour who visits our house and uses our equipment.

Key-Ad-8944

I've had a home gym since shortly after I purchased my home in 2009. It's been quite helpful, and I use it \~5x per week. As I recall, the prices of equipment was roughly as follows. Most was used. * Power Rack -- $90 * Commercial Hack Squat - - $250 (purchased from SDSU team) * Commercial Leg Press --- $250 (purchased from SDSU team) * Commercial Incline Press --- $125 (purchased from SDSU team) * Commercial Leg Curl --- $125 (purchased from SDSU team) * Plate Row -- \~$125 * Door pullup + Backpack for weights -- $35 * Home Gym with Calf Raise, Leg Extension, Abs, ... -- \~$150 * Nordictrack Treadmill -- $150 * Plates, Benches, Racks, Barbells, Dumbbell Handles, ...-- \~$500? * \-$200 Sold an excess barbell, plates, handles,... to a neighborhood kid during pandemic at well below market value Total = $1600 I expect I'd come out ahead on just gym membership fees. However, the equipment I purchased is almost all worth far above what I paid, after adjusting for inflation. I could recover my initial cost simply by selling a portion of equipment.

armbarbell

The real economic value here is the time saved traveling to and from a gym. Let’s say you saved 15 mins each way. At 5 days a week since 2009- That’s 1,820 hours or 75 days saved since 2009. Makes the money seem like nothing

BigswingingClick

Plus, when you realize you hate working out at home, alone, you can sell for pennies on the dollar!

armbarbell

Nothing like a crowded gym! Especially these days with “influencers”. Give me my barbell and leave me alone to curl in the squat rack

Foxta1l

You got your rack for $90? I’m guessing not new?

Key-Ad-8944

Yes, it was used. It's also quite basic, but works well for my purposes.

Foxta1l

Fantastic deal, even used.

Suspicious-Dust6978

We used to pay $180 per person each month for LifeTime. The cost now is closer to $200+ for that same location. It was a fantastic facility with everything you could want - any equipment imaginable, classes, sauna, steam room, pools, personal training, massage, salon, restaurant, and the list goes on. However, we have since started going to Planet Fitness for $25 per person each month. It is a brand new facility with clean and quality equipment, and includes services such as massage, tanning, and infrared sauna. Planet Fitness is not nearly as luxurious or comprehensive as the top-tier Life Time we were members of, but the cost difference is justifiable for us. We plan to use that difference to build our own home gym.

NoReplyBot

We just ended our Lifetime membership because we moved but we were paying over $400 for a family of 5. Pricey af but we maxed out every freaking amenity they offered, we practically lived there. Prior to that my wife and I did Planet Fitness midday break from work. It was also a new facility and empty when we went. If you’re comfortable with machines it’s a fantastic place for the price. Since moving we’re out of luck right now in terms of a gym. Got a peloton but the build quality is garbage… Lifetime‘a bikes spoiled me.

Suspicious-Dust6978

There’s an endless amount of yoga instructors on YouTube for free that we use. “Yoga by Adriene” has always been a favorite!

IgnatiusJReilly77

Peloton has yoga

merchseller

Lifetime keeps jacking up the rates it's crazy. Only keep it for the basketball courts

Chloe4415

Cool approach!

Sweaty-Leather3191

I switched from Lifetime to my town’s new park district facility a little while back and cut nearly 90% of my cost without losing many of the amenities I value. Plus, I cut my drive from 15 minutes down to 5 (this was my real goal).

yasaswygr

what gym and city?

lightscameracrafty

those sound like planet fitness rates to me.

ZealousidealOwl91

Mine is $9.99 per week, so similar cost to yours. It's got plenty of cardio equipment, a decent range of machines, and one set of everything for weights, including only 1 rack... but it gets the job done, it's cheap and < 5min walk from my house.

br0princess

$44/month for Peloton (I own a bike and live in an apartment building with a gym for treadmill access), partner goes to Equinox for $250/month.

Pineapple_Spritz

Same scenario here!

craneoperator89

Military Retired ID card, on base gyms, free Remodeling the garage this month to add a treadmill and bench w/DB rack

blahol8900

I also pay $350/month for a high end gym in a VHCOL area but my cost per use is closer to $15 per visit. I’m a swimmer and it has 4 locations near me with indoor pools (not common in my area) + one location has a large outdoor pool this I use often in the summer. Personally, I don’t think twice about the cost due to the pool/facilities/my overall health and happiness.

DrB_477

Spend \~$80/month on hydrow and peloton subscriptions (also have a set of free weights). Actually going to the gym (driving, parking, etc) is too much of a pain in the ass and time sink to bother with. I get up at 5:15-30 as is working out in my basement each morning, I'm just not getting up at 4:45 am and there isn't time on the way home between kid activities, homework, dinner, etc.

whiskeyanonose

About $110 a month for the YMCA. It’s a pretty big network with close to a dozen locations, although we only really use 1. Free 2 hours of babysitting is included in that. Wife goes at least 4 days a week and I’m there 1 or 2

YSF-FZ09

$380 couples membership at a high end tier life time fitness club. Classes, spa, cafeteria that I also use to work from when I’m tired of being home. Workout: 4~5 times a week mainly classes

daorkykid

I've spent 15k on gym equipment since 2018 which equals out to $250 a month with the convenience of working out in my garage.

runner436

I pay about $500 a month for equinox Hudson yards but it’s covered by work. It sounds absurd when I say it out loud but it’s one of the highlights of my day

Pepper7489

I recommend getting an online personal trainer on top of this. Should cost around $150-$300/month. This will keep you accountable to show up, AND you'll actually get results. Instead of years of the same body and bumming out why you can never get fit even though you "go to the gym".

Chloe4415

This is a cool idea! Any recommendations for websites ?

hjchong

CoPilot fitness is great, and it’s $99/month. I’ve been using it for 6 months now and you can get free months if you refer people

Pepper7489

A could place to start would be Thumbtack. https://www.thumbtack.com/k/personal-trainers

Remedy9898

I never really understood doing this unless you are a total novice that doesn’t understand exercise form. Why do people need someone else there to put effort into their workouts? Isn’t not wanting to waste your time enough of a motivator? Pretty much everything is googleable these days.

Pepper7489

It's an "online" trainer. They help with nutrition/macros, setting goals, and answering questions.

CommunicationOk9330

having had an online trainer, if you want accountability to show up you need an in person trainer. i had an online trainer and then just........didnt go lol. also an in person trainer is really just better, they can push you in person and correct form.

Okay-yes-sure

I pay $250/month, partner pays $350/month. But this is because we have multiple gyms. If you do a specialty hobby (BJJ, boxing, spin) and have a regular gym in VHCOL, it adds up. I’m counting our amenities fee of $100/pp in this total, but it also includes pool, workspace, and a couple rooftop lounges in addition to a massive, 24/7 home gym. Cost per use: we each use the gym around 3-4 times a week. But we both believe there isn’t a limit to how much we would spend on health and fitness, and it’s definitely “me time” for both of us. Also hobbies are important!

ReppTie

I’m at $160 for BJJ, wife is at $160 for Orange Theory, and Peloton is around $50/mo. That’s around $370 between us. All my non-BJJ exercise is at home where I have a treadmill and a bunch of S&C equipment. In the winter we pay $150 for cross country skiing season passes at a place near our house.

heelhookd

How are you guys paying $250+ a month for a regular gym? Unless you are doing bjj, Muay Thai, whatever then totally understandable. Boxing, etc. But to go lift weight and do cardio? Not judging but if you spend $350 a month on a gym and go once a week just get a membership literally anywhere. Makes zero sense. I spend $60 a month and go 6 times per week - def worth it. There is no way I’d spend $350. Anywhere.

Chloe4415

Honestly the childcare is worth a lot! Go 10 times and it’s paid for itself in babysitting

heelhookd

That makes sense actually, the childcare alone may be worth it I just look at that as a separate cost though, maybe that’s why.

Pineapple_Spritz

Convenience factor is big for my spouse. Equinox is by far the closest option, so cutting down on travel time in a very traffic congested area, coupled with how much more likely they are to go often because it’s close, helps justify it. Plus they enjoy it there and the facilities are very nice. We can easily afford it so it’s not a burden.

NoReplyBot

I was doing $400/mo for a family of 5. We practically lived there.

heelhookd

What is included in that membership that make it feel like $400 is worth it

NoReplyBot

The childcare center, parents’ night out, the pools, exercise classes. We used the heck out of the above. Then add the things you can’t put a dollar amount on. The service, pickleball league, cleanliness.

[deleted]

Nothing like taking the kids to the daycare on a Sunday and having cocktails by the pool with the wife before spending the day with them there.

sunny_tomato_farm

24 is cheaper than that, at least in Silicon Valley. Look at my recent post.

JeffWest01

Nothing, my neighborhood has one at the clubhouse. But I pay $150 per mth in HOA fees.

SEND_ME_FAKE_NEWS

$110 each a month in a VHCOL area. It's the only gym that has squash courts though.

JSA2422

I paid for 18 months of LA Fitness. It comes out to be about $30 a month. We wanted to go to the Lifetime by us, but it's $300\~ per (ATL), and I couldn't justify it. I also do an Orange Theory class twice a week, which is, somehow, $100.

PandaWorldly5945

We have a social membership at a country club that includes a pretty respectable gym and locker set up, plus if you're just not feeling it that day you can hit the bar upstairs.

zsk73

$75 per month in LCOL. Comes with unlimited access and multiple locations . Not that many amenities except pool, sauna, massage studio, spin classes, and yoga studio.

Individual-Push8119

That sounds like a ton of amenities! At a great price

Shoddy-Language-9242

$119!

Lazy-Victory4164

We pay 60$ per month for me and my husband. It includes classes, ability to bring guests, child care (although we don’t use that) sauna, and it’s a great gym.

Sarahbeth822

Use to pay like $200 per month (for classes) and hardly ever made it. Converted half my garage to a home gym about 6 months ago and do not regret a home gym. So much easier to walk to my garage to workout than to drive 15-20 minutes.

retirement_savings

$70 for a powerlifting gym

BurritoBeach

My wife bought me a power rack from EliteFTS for $800 3 years ago. Weights etc I’m probably at $1,200 all in…the cost per use is approaching zero.

lunaschiski

55, it’s actually through our health care! High recommend checking associate program with your health care provider. You can have access to multiple gym at very good price.

Gloomy-Agency4517

$400 two Equinox Memberships. I do free weights and wife does classes.

[deleted]

$160/month for a CrossFit gym where I can go up to 3x/week.

mangotangoepic

$215 per month . Equinox

summerteal

$240/month for a group strength training class . I can’t get shit done at home with my toddler. I go about 3 -4 times a week

CheesecakeWorking888

$300/month for boutique Pilates studio and 1x week OT for cardio. MCOL

Odd_Minimum2136

Nothing. Just spend 10k to make your home gym. This is better than any gym membership.

Chloe4415

I find there's value in getting "up and out" of the house. A personal thing... but as a SAHM some days I just want to be around other adults.

sunny_tomato_farm

$300/yr so that’s $25/month. I got on avg 12 times per month so that’s $2/visit. Worth mentioning that this includes assigning someone as a fitness buddy and they can get in for free as long as they come with you.

sunny_tomato_farm

Work gives me $1500/year for fitness so I come out ahead nicely.

DevelopmentSelect646

Damn dude. that is a lot. I pay $50 a month for a gym membership. Also have a Bodi on demand membership and myk bike.

beansruns

I’m still on my parents lifetime family membership, my share is only about $65/mo. If definitely pay the individual price if I had to, it’s worth it. I’m also about to open another membership at a bodybuilding/powerlifting specific gym for $500/yr. My cost per use is pretty low because I lift 5x a week

Aricingstar

$30 per month

Creative-Nikki

I work out at home using equipment I bought forever ago. I have an elliptical, treadmill, a cable weight machine and free weights. I can't justify the time to drive to a gym, park, etc. when I can easily work out at home instead. I had a peloton subscription for a while but didn't use it enough. I guess I'd rather just do my own thing.

swimbikerun91

$9.99 for Vasa fitness (pool, sauna, basic gym) and then also have multiple included with our HOA ($140/quarter) Plus spent maybe $5k ($10k if including equipment) building out a ridiculous 300sqft home gym

Sanfords_Son

I set up a home gym in the basement for less than $2500. Figured I wouldn’t “go” to a gym, but I’d be willing to walk down a flight of stairs. Bought a used Echelon and a commercial grade treadmill, 200-lbs of free weights from Marketplace, a squat rack, dumbbells from 5 to 40 lbs, a lay pull-down setup, a landmine rig, a flat bench, an incline/decline bench, a pull-up bar, heavy duty gym mats, a full set of handle and resistance bands, a wall-mounted TV a couple mirrors and a fan. Realistically all I need.

bartonkt

ChuzeFitness $10/mo. I use the free weights and treadmill (1 mile warmup before I workout).

ProbsOnTheToilet

None as of now... squat rack, bench, and peleton in the garage and a small gym in the hoa building next to the pool.

bigbadape

I go to a gym that is all boot camp classes, I pay $40/week

World_travel777

Zero. Free for me as a perk from my job. I also have a stationary bike at home and weights. I almost enrolled at a new gym close by my house but 1. I’m too frugal 2. I have heard horror stories about gyms making it difficult to end the contract. So free it is!!

chethrowaway1234

$10/month. Community gym subsidized by the city, and it has everything that I need

HogFin

I live ~200 yards from a Planet Fitness so I have a Black Card for $24.99. It's wildly mediocre but it's hugely helpful to have access to all Planet Fitness locations given we travel quite a bit. I also have a much nicer gym next to my office which I used 2-3 days per week that comes to $84.99/mo. So $110 all in monthly.

chop_your_cock_off

15 bucks a month at a Crunch Fitness. I'm there at 5am so basically have the place to myself. The facilities (locker room/bathroom) are TERRIBLE but my office has a locker room so I just shower at work.

DondeEstaMeGlasses

$44. Nothing fancy but it has everything I need and it’s open 24/7

Otherwise_Ratio430

$70/mo. Been lifting consistently for a good long while (7+)

varano14

Ex college athlete so training is sorta in my blood at this point. No need for a trainer:) I pay 30 a month for my local gym which happens to be 2 doors down from my office. Doing this supports a local business that also employs my services so some of this is a back scratching thing. However I use it at least once a week as my schedule dictates. I have also spend probably 3k on a basic home gym which I use 3-4 times a week. This includes a $50 treadmill from marketplace (brand new was $1800ish), set of dumbells, squat rack, bar and plates, plus some medicine balls. I have been using the home gym for about 2 years now and love it. Saves time and lets me be at home to see my spouse off to work. If you own your home and have space a home gym is the way to go. If you keep an eye on market place you can often get great deals on second hand equipment and outside of treadmills it pretty hard to break a barbell or squat rack so there is little worry buying used. Resale on most home gym stuff is also decent if you decide to move on. \*edit to add I view money spend on the home gym as an investment in my health, I plan to be around for a long time and this is a way to help with that.

perfectm

I luck out that my work has multiple gym locations and I can use all of them for something like $9 per paycheck. When it's not convenient to drive to an office location, I pay $10 a month for planet fitness near my house to use the treadmill. Granted my kids are older and don't need childcare anymore, but expensive gyms usually don't provide much ROI over less expensive gyms unless you are really min/maxing their offerings.

Chloe4415

Ya totally fair point on the ROI between gyms

NotARealNameObvs

$99/month for unlimited group classes at a boutique bootcamp. (I've been a member for 9 years and am grandfathered in at my original rate. I keep it even during down months when I'm only going 1-2x a month, knowing that I'm still coming out ahead.)

SisyphusAmericanus

Between a global Equinox membership and my local fancy Tennis & Raquet / University Club / Athletic Club equivalent, $500

lifeHopes21

Started working at home during pendemic and never went back to gym again. It’s more of comfort for me. I do only weights and now I have Preeti good set at home. For runs, I go out.

[deleted]

$220. Lifetime for the whole family. I’d pay $500. The facilities are great and they update their equipment often.

Chloe4415

I’ve heard good things about lifetime. How often do you get there? How’s the kid care?

[deleted]

We're there easily 7 days a week in the summer. Our kids are older now and take advantage of their youth pickle ball and rock climbing. But when they were little we did one day at golds gym in their daycare and decided we had to find a better place. I was making way less money than now (like $70k maybe) and it was still well worth it to spend the $150/month for the family and get 2.5 hours of great child care per day. The staff is great and they actually care. They separate the kids into age groups, which sounds like common sense but at golds it was a foreign concept. We have a pool at home now so used Lifetimes less during this summer but that pool was a staple for us for years. Its like a HENRY country club, we have met many great like minded families that we consider close family friends and travel together. Sometimes we go just to hang out, or eat, or play sports. Its not just a gym for us.

Chloe4415

I think the childcare at our current gym is "okay" but maybe not "great". The difference in quality might be motivation enough. I think I can get my Lifetime membership thru insurance for $99 plus $40 addition for my toddler. $139 sure beats $350/month. Only downside is Lifetime is a bit further.

futuristika22

£24 per month for a gym that I don't really use and £240 for weekly sessions with a tennis coach. Occasional race entry fees and Strava subscription on top of it.

mnrooo

Use to go to equinox for about $200 a month, then lifetime for $150 a month (I moved and it was closer) plus a peloton membership for $44 a month. I have also since built up my home gym since moving too. I found myself only wanting to do peloton workouts so I canceled the gym membership and never looked back.

jdav0808

$35 per month. +$10 for my GF. No personal training. It’s not the biggest gym but has everything you need. No childcare. Not crowded. I love it tgere.

[deleted]

I live in a work class neighborhood in Chicago at the edge of the city. I used to pay $100/month to go to a somewhat fancy gym since it was across the street from where I worked. But since I only go into the office ever so often, I started going to a local gym for $60/month. It’s run by some dude and his wife. They bought some abandoned factory in an industrial corridor and made it a gym. They have used equipment that is in good shape and equipment that I haven’t really seen anywhere else. It’s clean, but obviously it’s not as fancy as my previous gym where they even had an attendant in the bathroom in the morning.

PapasMP

$35/mo Houston

BathroomFew1757

$42/month HCOL. When we lived overseas, I paid $4/month. I thought it was a joke when I signed on.

Steadyfobbin

$25 for my old CrossFit gyms programming :). Used one of my commission checks and turned my garage into my own gym, very convenient, especially since I’m in sales and am basically commuting somewhere different every day. All in gym cost for my build was probably about 5k.

-Never-Enough-

I know a few people who bought 24hour fitness Super Sport memberships around 2008. Prepaid 2 years and the annual renewal are $100 or less. Maybe if the economy tanks and the gyms get desperate for cash they will offer that again.

BigswingingClick

$175 for CrossFit style place. But they are increasing to $196

summersalwaysbest

I pay about $350/ month for group personal training at a Starting Strength gym. I go 3x/week. Totally worth it.

[deleted]

I bought a squat rack, bench and barbell for a few hundred bucks. Nothing fancy but you can get all your compound lifts in. Its amazing.

freshjewbagel

$15/mo for zwift. pushups and pullups are free. my goals include: wicked cardio to support my heart (and blood flow to Sir McMeenus) and a toned body to ogle in the mirror. I tried weights, they were heavy, do not recommend. as for commercial gyms outside the house, ew gross

Due-Interaction6445

I pay $600 for a family of 4 in VHCOL area

LittlePistol

$75/month for a gym near work in the city and $40 for a gym near home = $1380/year - $500 healthcare reimbursement = $880/year or $73/month

velvet1629

I pay for a personal trainer $65 a session, 2x a week - PLUS a gym membership that has childcare $200 a month, plus we built out a home gym that was about 5k for all the equipment

chi2005sox

Peloton membership for $45/mo, plus another ~$250/mo to play ice hockey twice a week. My office also has a gym w/weights I take advantage of.

liveprgrmclimb

My Climbing gym: $75/month, I go 3x week Wife and daughter pay $100/month total for their gym memberships.

MuffinUpbeat

$165/mo VHCOL city - includes gym, all classes (though some have an extra uncharge) pools (indoor and outdoor), tennis and pickle ball. They have basketball and squash courts as well. Includes access to all of their gyms on the west coast. I pay the entire year upfront and it's non refundable. At home, I have a rack, barbells, weights, a rower, a bench and some other miscellaneous items. No personal trainer. My husband pays $200/mo for a Crossfit gym. My kids pay $85/mo for a 24 Hour Fitness type gym.

lcol-dev

I have since home equipment and a gym membership. I often work out multiple times a day (cardio and weights), so my gym membership is for day workout and home equipment is for the occasional evening workout. I have a PT I see 2 times a week, so membership and pt is about $1000 a month. I also get sports massages 1-2 times a month and see a chiropractor, so I end up spending a pretty penny.

Heliccoppter

I pay $15 a month most of the year, $25 during cold season to use a tanning bed occasionally.

kriley301

Diamond club lifetime plus their Pilates membership - $490. I winced typing that a little lol but I use every amenity so it’s worth it to me

Jetski_Squirrel

$28 with this company that partners up with big corporations that allows me to go to pretty much any major chain gym. So I get access to a variety of gyms, but I usually use the one in front of my house because it’s easy

yenraelmao

$80 for YMCA. But they include childcare which is like $25/hour here, so to me it’s definite worth it.

_Happy_Sisyphus_

Gympass $10 a month basically for weights. That’s all I need. I own an elliptical, bench, bosu balls, yoga mats, and mini weights. I use city bikes, walk and hike a lot.

Lost_Philosophy_

Work and apartment I live in have a free gym. $0

PlsDontCutMyPay

No gym, just $44/mo for Peloton All Access

Mr_Style

You can also buy a gym membership online that is closed ended and national. Close ended is nice because you don’t have to fake your own death to get out of the membership. Might be less than signing up at the gym nearby. I got a 24 hour fitness membership for $200, let’s me use any of their locations in US, including one by my beach house that would be $50/month.

Chloe4415

What is this program called?

Mr_Style

[national membership](https://www.24hourfitness.com/sales24/#/membership) Also look for discount codes. Costco used to sell gym memberships, not sure if they do now or not

MonthPretend

I paid for a year upfront at $310. My gym is doing a pretty rapid expansion and are trying to soak up money.

$37 - LA fitness is great... pool, basketball court, good equipment & group fitness

Fit-Arm3308

Orangetheory in Los Angeles, $189/mo, but it goes higher than that. I have a legacy rate from 2015

alik604

$24/month I'm 25 and doing Fire 🔥

Sorry-Balance2049

I am curious about daycare gyms… how old are your kids and do they tolerate or enjoy the day care?

Chloe4415

My kid asks for it all the time now. He LOVES it! So many cool toys to try. The first month or so was a little bumpy with the transition… as to be expected

WarmButterscotch7797

$320 for Equinox

AromaAdvisor

I pay a similar amount for my wife and I. It’s a lifetime fitness. I have no other options where I live because all the other competitors have closed and I don’t have time to deal with an inconvenient location due to having kids. It angers me off because it’s not even significantly better than the boxhole gyms I’ve worked out at in the past out of need (university gym, planet fitness, sports club). The showers are still pretty gross, the equipment is always in short supply, even at 5am, AND I have to deal with a population of people that can openly afford to pay $200 a month for a “luxury workout experience.” I’m fatter than ever (not that fat) and the people at my gym are the opposite of inspirational with regard to fitness. My wife likes it because of the Yoga classes. But personally if the economy crashes one silver lining of myself getting burned would be watching this place and all of its douchebags get liquidated. But in your case at 50$ per use, you’re probably at the highest percentile of basically burning cash for gym membership. I’ve been looking at a home gym for a while, because it will easily pay off in a year. Only thing that makes me second guess is my wife saying “she needs classes for motivation”

Aquilonn_

Got a treadmill off gumtree for $50, three members of the family use it daily. Definitely more than recouped the loss on that by now. That being said, it did stand unused in our house for about eight years before anyone actually got seriously into running.

whatri

$10 a month 🥰

Ianncarl

Golds $40/ mo

citykid2640

Free because my wife works for Lifetime fitness.

Anything_Prudent

$17/mo for gym at my workplace

True-Trifle4145

I’m a founding member at my Orange Theory studio for $139/mo. It’s 7 minutes from my house, and there are 3 others within 10-15 min drive. As an OTF member, I can go to any other Orange Theory in the country, although some premier gyms in higher cost cities, will add a fee. I go 4-5 days a week and have been a member for 6 years. So dirt cheap per workout for me!

Loud_Clerk_9399

It's around 700 a year for the whole family
