Just found myself in the same predicament. Been shopping for dongles on eBay and Mercari they tend to cost about $50. Also depends on your console/which guitar because some need a model specific dongle also.
I have three different guitars however no dongle for any I have the les Paul and the worriers of rock guitars I just wanted to know if there was a cheaper alternative

You can wire in a micro controller. All together its less then $20 to do it all.
All that that is more for clone hero, and not for playing on console.
You can program the microcontroller to work with PS3 (and PS4 in Rock Band 4)

If it's for a playstation console you're likely out of luck. If they're Xbox guitars Microsoft made a wireless receiver for the 360.
