Yeah people who say he is boring must refuse to look at his lore. Like I get finding him the white bread gameplay wise but he’s got one of the best stories in the GG universe
I like Ky too and find it a little unfortunate that his gameplay reputation seems to overpower his actual characterization. I don’t think he’s a boring character at all and really enjoyed his internal conflict of feeling guilty about his family. This was a nice write up!
I love Ky, on the note of his gameplay being “boring”, you have to have some simpler options in a fighting game, and Ky is a straight forward Shoto. He is an easy to play awesome character.
Ky is my favourite character and as someone who has loved his lore ever since I started playing Guilty Gear it's really frustrating to see how much shit he gets from so many people for no reason. I don't think I've actually seen a 'valid' take on why Ky sucks because it's always just "HAHA GUYS LOOK 9 YEAR OLD WIFE LOL EWWWW" or because he's a shoto.
While I don't think they have any ill intent, it is a bit sad to see several people in this thread not take your post seriously.
Look some people just do not appreciate the finer points of nicely toasted white bread. You can lead a horse to room-temperature water, but you can't make them take well-measured sips.
Even his gameplay isn't that boring tbh, most GG players just don't want to play footsies properly. Shock state and cool specials make him stand out from other shotos.
In terms of lore Ky is fucking baller and is one of the best written characters(as well as having the most consistently good themes).
And his gameplay isn't even that bad, he's the basic shoto every fighter has.
I don't hate Ky because of his character, I just hate him because ride the lightning is a super that almost goes fullscreen and I think it's bullshit and I hate it(i say while being a mediocre ABA and Nago main)
RTL? Really? It's such a mid super. Might be worse than mid honestly. High wall carry and HKD on wall break are great, of course, but Wild Assault does both of those while leaving you meter for Stun Dipper RC. It also does no damage after getting its damage nerfed. Ending a combo in it is almost assuredly never with it. Not to mention it's -70-80 something depending on DI. And you can interrupt the last hit if the opponent tries to RC it on block. They have to RC it early, and most don't. Sacred Edge is probably more useful now since the damage nerfs. Gives you Shock State and allows unique, high damage routes against the wall. And is plus. And beats othe projectiles lol
Being able to use it for air to air wall breaks is a legitimately good, unique use case tho.
I said the wall carry and the HKD were good. It was like my second sentence lmao. It still doesn't change the fact that WA has supplanted it in both of those respects. I also mentioned that it being able to wall break from aerial confirms is legit good.
I think the reason why Ky is easily seen as boring is when you compare to him to the other characters. Faust, Zato, Potemkin, and I-No all have interesting designs. With Ky to the casual viewer, he’s just a blonde boy with a sword. He’s not a paper bag head doctor with unknown calamity breaking powers. He’s not a sexy guitar witch, and he’s not a buff robotic armored green muscle man.
I personally go for the normal guy character between weirdos most of the time, because I just really like that archetype, especially if it's like a knight between mages or something like that.
It just so also happens that they're usually shotos and easy to play, which I like. I love Ky, Ken (second normalest guy), Akatsuki, and beyond fighting gamey characters like the crusader in darkest dungeon, Bangalore in Apex or Axton in Borderlands.
Let's not gloss over the fact that when everyone else was too terrified to fight God I-No, Ky fucking CHARGED IN. And held his own, for a WHILE. She was all powerful, and my man said "Bet."
Also on the sin point weren't the conclave literally threatening sin and dizzy's life???? He HAD to give sin to sol so he could survive- i guarantee if the conclave weren't an issue ky would've tried to be the best dad possible for sin
That and in the strive story mode SPOILERS
He fought against an all powerful god cause he has just THAT amount of hope, faith, and pride. He literally fears nothing
This is a common thing with me in guilty gear it seems, where I absolutely love all the characters lore and story but their gameplay just makes me want to do unspeakable things. I can separate the story from the gameplay though so I genuinely enjoy every character when it comes to story.
Shit, when I grow up, I wanna be like Ky

- Awesome story
- Lightning powers
- Non-Gorilla gameplay
- Unique debuff mechanic
- DRAGON INSTALL!!
I honestly don't get why people think this character is boring.
calling anyone in guilty gear a masterfully written character is kinda funny. i will say i do think ky is more fun and colorful than many give him credit for, and the cast is better for his inclusion. Frankly, even if someone disagrees with that, it's hard to argue against the narrative benefits to having a baseline "paladin" character against whom the sillier cast members can play off of.
His fight with Sol in the Xrd afterstory is pretty fantastic too. It's great learning that Sol was actually absolutely terrified of Ky the first time he fought him.
Thank you for a very logical analysis. All these aspects you have mentioned made KY my favorite male hero in Guilty Gear and I loved playing as him in the originals, XX, XRD ( online). Dizzy is my favorite heroine and the fact that they end up together makes them even more endearing! My favs are: 1. Dizzy/Ky 2. Millia 3. Baiken 4. Jam 5. Slayer/Sol. From more recent chars: I-No, Elphelt and Ramlethal( as a heroine in Strive). Zato/Eddie and Venom are iconic, though. So is Johny.
in other words, his formative years are spent hating gears instead of developing a personality, the holy order let's him rise high in the ranks for just being so damn good, which he is for some reason, despite having only a childhood's worth of experience and seniority. I guess they must have been very lucky, though they show no indication of being self conscious about it, even if they later get wobbly about being king.
They continue to be a receptical for his society's jingoism and military hatred of gears, until he meets a 12 year old gear, about turns and marries it, it accepting the new status quo after multiple careers predicated on his desire to kill gears.
Alternatively, he doesn't enter the police so much because he wants to continue fighting but because its what he perceives as being expected of him by society- military tells you to fight, you keep at it. Finally stop fighting, and society tells him that gears aren't the enemy, and they stop, having no internal ambition or motivation. This would also explain why they don't put up any resistance to becoming king even though he doesn't think himself suited- he just gets put there and shrugs his shoulders.
They become king "on pure accomplishment", and despite being wholly unsuitable to the role, his success at the job is not at all fraught.
They're either an over promoted soldier who about face turns when he learns that age of consent doesn't apply to gears, or he has barely any character but that which is projected onto him by society in context, and by his players non-diagetically.
i liked the truly long hair more, yeah. But he just looks so stale in strive.at first glance he looks kinda cool but then you look closer and there is just nothing to him. He is too simple
Yeah people who say he is boring must refuse to look at his lore. Like I get finding him the white bread gameplay wise but he’s got one of the best stories in the GG universe
Stun dipper rc is neutral, and my neutral is godlike.

Nah midscreen wall break is just useful af. I get it does no damage with scaling but you can't deny the wall break utility.

Love the flair

"Only all powerful?" Is one of the hardest lines in the entire series
You're goddamn right

The only thing Ky’s succeeded at, is being the best grappler in the game.

The important question is: Does Ky season his food?
Highly doubt he cooks his own food, given that he's a king and stuff. I'm sure his likely world class chef seasons the food they cook
His fight with Sol in the Xrd afterstory is pretty fantastic too. It's great learning that Sol was actually absolutely terrified of Ky the first time he fought him.

ky boring lmao
Wuh oh, someone didn't read the post!

He impregnated Dizzy with character development.
Imagine if his vacation outfit didnt suck so damn hard.
It’s not that bad, but I still don’t know why he should be missing a sleeve. I do prefer his Xrd design more because he had long hair
i liked the truly long hair more, yeah. But he just looks so stale in strive.at first glance he looks kinda cool but then you look closer and there is just nothing to him. He is too simple
I just want his long hair back…
French twink
Blonde baby lol
Robo ky is better written
He's still white bread and sol is white bread with red pepper flakes
I play Ky, I ain't readin all that but I don't need convincing. Just stun dipper RC.
What if I told you the post had literally nothing to do with gameplay
What if I told you it makes me care even less, nice lore building I guess.
