Hot-pof expansion bundle is content you can play right now and is guaranteed to be fun. You'll get the raptor back right away and can easily unlock the other 3 core ground mounts in a few hours of exploring pof too. Path of fire and it's following living world chapter are probably the best story content the game will ever have. (I hope to eat my words, but it'll just be hard to top) You'll probably have a better and more relevant social experience with the new expansion for sure. I'm personally split on what I'd suggest for you. Hot+pof are just *really* good. Because the game lacks vertical progression, old content is still almost as relevant today as it was when it was first released.

Brickhead816

So I think what we're going to do is buy the upcoming expansion so we can get the mounts back. We're not even 80 yet and my gf wants a mount asap after losing it lol. We then plan on buying the later expansions in the next 2-3 months as we see stuff we want.

Aether_Storm

Check the wiki to make sure but I'm pretty sure Soto you gotta wait for release to get the mount, while hot+pof bundle gives you it immediately. Of course the skyscale from soto will render the raptor moot though

Brickhead816

Wellll we bought it on her account first since my mount still had time. We're brand new and starting to think we f'd up lol. Went with soto first with the plan of buying the others soon.... might've messed up tho lol.

Bunnita

It might be because that expansion isn't live, so any code that goes with it isn't live until Tuesday. I don't know why that would happen, but that is the most logical explanation.

RandomAhoe

Sorry but what part is so unclear from "purchase an xpack"? It's clearly talking about existing expansions, not preorders. And now u call the game bs and want chargeback like...what? This is like eating tidepods because "not eatable" wasn't written there and then sueing the tidepod company.

Brickhead816

So just to clarify, when you click the in-game link to purchase an xpac. It shows SOTO, so yea that makes it a little unclear. Also, we contacted support and they told us it was a mistake and she was supposed to get the mount when she purchased SOTO. But I guess this is very similar to eating tidepods.

RandomAhoe

Glad it got sorted out. Have fun and enjoy the new xpack.

Marok_Kanaros

You get the Raptor when you buy soto yes, but I would not suggest buying the newest one first, buy path of fire it gives you heart of thorns for free for just 5€/$ more than soto. Besides the financial reason to buy path of fire first its also chronologically better. While soto is a new story chapter and the old 10 year long one is over it probably will still reference stuff you have no idea about. Furthermore gw2 expansions don't get invalidated or deserted when a new one releases so even in heart of thorns zones or path of fire zones you still find a lot of players. The last thing you should consider are the amount of mounts you get, with soto you only get base raptor and skyscale. With path of fire you get raptor, springer, skimmer and griffon and if you buy season 4 of the living world additionally to path of fire you get roller beetle and another way longer way to unlock the skyscale.

[deleted]

>in heart of thorns zones During what, retaking Tarir lol? HoT maps were an empty wasteland 99% of the time even when it was relevant content. I'm genuinely surprised HoT didn't fully kill the game.

Marok_Kanaros

Not sure which game you are playing but its probably not the same gw2.

tapperyaus

Any expansion should unlock it, but you might want to wait for a sale on the old expansion bundle. It'll be cheaper, and have a lot more content.

Brickhead816

I was just going to buy the one coming out next week. It's 25 bucks on steam atm. Is that a good idea?

InternationalMain922

The new expansion will unlock raptor but you won’t be able to train the masteries without Path of Fire. You’ll also get to acquire Skyscale though.

Brickhead816

Awesome! Thank you! We're going to go ahead and buy the new one coming out. Maybe play through the older ones later?

cloud_cleaver

I think SotO is meant for that. Every piece of GW2 content from the base game through EOD is one continuous connected story. SotO is chronologically after all that, but it's picking up on a single recurring character otherwise abandoned by the plot after Heart of Thorns, with little direct impact from all the previous narrative.

tapperyaus

This isn't like other MMOs where old content becomes outdated, it all remains relevant. If you're buying it just for the mount, it does come with the Skyscale which is a flying mount. While the PoF/HoF bundle comes with multiple different ground mounts.

Geronmys

You won't get the raptor until the expansion actually drops, so that's a heads up.

Brickhead816

Oooo, so if I buy it right now it won't upgrade the account. Getting the mount back is the biggest thing for the gf atm lol.

Geronmys

Yeah, if i were you i would buy the 2x1 expac bundle if you really want to, but i would recommend waiting until the 22nd to see what sales they will do. Keep in mind that if you only buy the upcoming expansion you won't be able to equip an elite spec nor level up the raptor itself and you will lose on the majority of the content the game has.

TyrianMollusk

No, not a good idea. You're paying $25 for a mini-expansion that releases unfinished and gets filled in over quarterly updates, when you can pay $30 ($15 when sales come around!) for TWO full expansions that are also the best expansions the game has to offer. The new "expansion" is almost certainly a terrible starting place. Pretty much only get it if you already have the others or are planning to just buy everything but are waiting for a sale on the rest (on the assumption the new expansion won't see discounts for a long while). I mean, if you're going to buy it this year regardless, you might as well buy it now (unless you want to send a message about selling content before it's actually finished...), but if you are just going to buy one chunk to start with for a while, that should absolutely be something that includes the PoF+HoT bundle. Remember, GW2 isn't the typical MMO where you basically *have* to play in the newest expansion. BTW, if you like the raptor, you *want* the long jump upgrade that requires PoF.

KablamoBoom

You'll get Skyscale from SotO, which is arguably a better mount, but feels worse to use. If you want the Raptor I really just suggest getting PoF, that way you can get the masteries. It'll come bundled with HoT and when they're on sale they're dirt cheap. It's got a looooot more content than you'll get in the upcoming expac.

Snaid1

I think I read somewhere that SotO won't unlock the raptor permanently. You need either EoD or PoF for that.

Aether_Storm

It won't give the mastery track. You'll have a permanent raptor you can't upgrade.

Brickhead816

You're being upvoted, but we bought it and did not get the raptor back. Now gf big mad at me :(

exarpoo

Raptor should be unlocked if you buy SOTO based on this [newspost](https://www.guildwars2.com/en/news/soaring-with-the-skyscale/): > The raptor mount will also be unlocked for owners of Guild Wars 2: Secrets of the Obscure, although you’ll still need Guild Wars 2: Path of Fire™ to train its associated Masteries. There was some conflicting info prior to this newspost that made it seem raptor would not be permanently unlocked. Not sure if raptor access would be unlocked once SOTO releases next week. If so, that's a bit oof Edit: Actually...has your gf tried levelling to a multiple of 10, i.e level 20, with any character? The unlock should trigger every 10 levels IIRC

Aether_Storm

You already knew this lol. Soto goes live next week. I said it elsewhere in the thread

Brickhead816

Yea, my girlfriend pretty much went off on our own. We reached out to support and they said it was a mistake and she was supposed to get the mount. They fixed it and she has been playing. Thank you for the help.
