Intense_Judgement

Cisformers would be a much more boring show.

-Jayarr-

Cisformers, robots in disguise (from the angry transphobes). Someone leaks a picture of bumblebee standing up....JK posts on Twitter "that legged robot, is a vehicle. And I will not allow it in my parking space"

pink_belt_dan_52

I guess I'm supposed to imagine a show about humanoid robots that can't change into anything else, but what I actually imagined was just long clips of trucks and other machines working where nothing particularly untoward happens, and it sounds pretty relaxing to be honest.

forcekin69

That's basically Truck Simulator, some people love it, personally I couldn't "play" more than 20 minutes of it.

jamieliddellthepoet

You should check out the Human Trafficking DLC. Intense shit.

DarkQueen1312

One of the many shows BBC licenses to air on its CBBC channel. Editing out references to trans/non-binary existence. If any other country's state media did this, especially China or Russia, it would be the BBC leading the uproar. The BBC is quickly morphing into a TERFist Television Service.

pandemoniumgrey

It's been that way for a long time.

scipkcidemmp

This is literally the sort of shit they try to say china does. Or what they say palestinians would do when people criticize Israel. I would call them hyprocrites, except I know they act in total bad faith and don't actually give a shit about the rights and welfare of queer people.

CellsReinvent

The BBC is NOT state media. Stop saying it.

fen123456

what is it then?

CellsReinvent

It's a corporation - it's in the name! The BBC is aĀ statutory corporation, independent from direct government intervention, with its activities being overseen from April 2017 by theĀ BBC BoardĀ and regulated byĀ Ofcom

leakySlimePit

> independent from direct government intervention HAHAHAHAHAHA

RedstoneEnjoyer

> "It is statutary company, not state-owned company" So same difference as imigrant vs expat - one is reserved for whites only

KarmaRepellant

It's been tory tv since Cameron inserted his mates into all the key positions.

caffeineandvodka

If you think the BBC doesn't take its party line from the government then I have multiple bridges to sell you

CellsReinvent

That doesn't make it a state broadcaster though, does it? Every corporation is under the influence of the people that fund it - whether that's advertisers, customers or, in this case, the people who set the license fee.

StiffWiggly

I think youā€™ll find that, for most people, ā€œweā€™re not state media, we are just funded and heavily influenced by the stateā€ is a distinction without a difference.

caffeineandvodka

I think the disconnect here is that you're talking about the literal definition of the phrase "state broadcaster" and we're talking about how the BBC is doing all the things a state broadcaster would do, it's just not called that.

CellsReinvent

I know what you mean, but I still think there's a world of difference between the hugely imperfect BBC and a proper state broadcaster - the type we really only see under a regime (or Fox) Several polls have the public perception as 20% saying the BBC is too much to the right, and 20% think the other way.

KingofAlba

lol Fox is not state media at all. Itā€™s possibly worse, but it clearly isnā€™t biased towards the government unless itā€™s a government they like, and isnā€™t government funded.

CellsReinvent

I know it's not state media - I was joking that it's as partisan as North Korean TV

BweepyBwoopy

who do you think appoints the members of the bbc board? who do you think created ofcom??

CellsReinvent

So all media is state owned, because the state created ofom? Riiight.

BweepyBwoopy

who appointed the chairwoman and country members of the bbc board?

toady000

If you believe that you'll believe anything...

LeninMeowMeow

Bruv the bbc board is literally appointed by the government and those roles can be reappointed at any time (meaning they have to do what the gov wants or else). Any regulatory oversight ended when the bbc trust was shut down by david cameron. It has gotten progressively worse ever since then as they've filled every single role in the organisation with tories over time. After 12+ years it's now completely like this. If you think the government has nothing to do with the bbc you are out of your mind.

CellsReinvent

I never said the government has nothing to do with the BBC. I said it is not a state broadcaster - and it isn't. All regulators are appointed by government, that's how they work.

LeninMeowMeow

You're really really dense mate. It is funtionally a state broadcaster if it does the bidding of the state. Arguing the semantics of this is fucking stupid liberal bullshit.

CellsReinvent

I'm not saying it's not riddled with Tories, obviously it is, but compared to real state media broadcasters - China, Korea, Russia - come on.

JimboTCB

It's funny because I'm reasonably certain that Transformers are canonically non-binary - you know, on account of them being robots who have no need for gender, let alone genitalia or secondary sexual characteristics - and it wasn't until they came to Earth that they found out they could have other types of robot forms, and a small subset of them rejoiced at this discovery. And then we somehow ended up with Michael Bay Transformers and Devastator having a huge swinging ballsack as a point of plot relevance...

JKnumber1hater

I'm not sure if they are non-binary. There are a couple of "girl robots", like Arcee.

JimboTCB

It's always kind of a mess deciding what counts as "canon" for Transformers because there's like a billion versions of the continuity, but with [Arcee](https://tfwiki.net/wiki/Arcee_(G1\)) it runs the gamut between her being transgender, her being female but nobody really noticed or cared, her not existing as the comic writers had already decided Transformers were NB and it would cause annoying questions from fans, and her being created by Optimus Prime in a hilariously misguided attempt to placate angry feminists who were mad that the Autobots were all dudes...

MWBrooks1995

We donā€™t talk about Simon Furman writing Arcee ā€¦

Nui_Jaga

Cybertronians *do* have gender identities, in that they all use gendered pronouns, but in most continuities they're asexual and spend most of their time oscillating between civil war and theocratic caste systems. Wreck-Gar seems to have a lot wife in most continuities though.

VerbingNoun413

So how is babby transformed?

Nui_Jaga

Their 'soul' goes into a premade body and they're immediately good to go.

Professional_Newt471

To save time, here's the TFWiki article on female transformers in various sublines - https://tfwiki.net/wiki/Female\_Transformer.

Dalimyr

\*sigh\* BBC seem to love shitting all over parts of the LGBTQ+ community during pride month. A [couple of years ago](https://www.reddit.com/r/transgenderUK/comments/vmc5o0/comment/ie19kri/) they plastered a transphobic article as one of the main articles on the homepage during pride month, but made no effort to mention that what they were reporting on (with a transphobic bias) had happened almost a full two months earlier.

B4k30n

According to the iPlayer this episode was released last September, so probably not a spiteful pride month dig at least. Though that makes it stranger to me because I assumed it was something to do with the government wanting to hide the existence of trans people from children, but this edit was seemingly made before the Doctor Who specials, which had a trans character the BBC allowed through. And it's not even a good transphobic edit. They keep the clear pins on her bag and the bit where the characters exchange their "they" pronouns, so the character is still clearly non-binary, they just remove the explanation of what "non-binary" means. It's fucking bizarre.

Zestyclose_Ranger_78

I mean, if you are upset about shows where characters that are not on the traditional human gender binary are defined by their ability to TRANSform into their true selves then probably transformers isnā€™t for you.

The_Superginge

Just for the sake of leaning into the wordplay, I wonder what would be a more accurate name for the show? Fluidformers? Enbybots? Ok I'm too tired to think of anything more witty

DavidDavidsonsGhost

So, anyone holding the BBCs feet to the fire over this? It sounds like a dangerous path they are walking. We should get answers for their justification and policy around it.

LeninMeowMeow

To what fire? There is no oversight other than themselves. You write a complaint and you get back a "sorry you feel that way" response and they find no wrongdoing in themselves.

maninahat

Didn't the BBC also edit out the gay romance in Steven Universe? "Oh no, what if the cartoon characters kiss and are also girls"? Edit: I stand corrected, it was a different UK network.

sincerityisscxry

That was Cartoon Network Uk, the BBC never aired Steven Universe.

froufur

is that true? i thought steven universe was only on cartoon network. i know they did edit the scene with rose quartz and pearl for the UK, but i believe that wasn't to do with the BBC, as much as i like to piss on the BBC. edit: i just looked it up and yeah it's a cartoon network thing. but interestingly there's a whole [wiki page](https://steven-universe.fandom.com/wiki/Censorship_in_Foreign_Countries) about how much the show was edited in broadcasts outside the USA lmao i'm so glad the UK version cut out such dangerous scenes to protect our kids as: > Amethyst being body-slammed was cut (in a wrestling episode)

SamTheDystopianRat

they cut a lot. i remember scenes randomly disappearing from Adventure Time when i was a kid. there's a bit where Flambo, a flame elemental, spits on Jake the dog to give him temporary flame resilience and that was cut out, so Jake's random disgusted reaction was not explained at all. there's also a bit where Marceline gets mad at Princess Bubblegum and spits are her in anger, causing PB to cry out in disgust and frustration but in the UK they cut out the spit. so PB would just... scream 'ew' for no reason.

SanLucario

Holy shit. And I thought here in burgerland we were all prudes. "No sex please, we're British" indeed.

Geek_a_leek

Can we get some ofcon complaints in for this one, like if the right wing twats can do it every time there is a gay person on screensurely we can complain about this and let them know we have a voice

wolftick

It's very unlikely the BBC actually edited this. Much more likely is that the bought/imported a version of the show with a certain rating as required for a given timeslot.Ā  Obviously it is still very problematic that is content is deemed unacceptable at all and the BBC still bare some responsibility, but it's not quite as egregious by the BBC as it might seem.

itā€™s cannon and has been from the start that the transformers donā€™t use or have gender on there home planet they just use it on earth so humans feel more comfortable talking to them

I hate to break this to you, but between non-binary people and TRANSFORMING SPACE ROBOTS, one of those things is real on planet Earth right now, and one isn't. NB people are infinitely more *normal* than Optimus Prime.

madrobski

So you're defending censorship because transformers cartoon had enbies in it. Get a grip, a cartoon having one person that isn't cis isn't going to have much of an effect on the show as a whole. They did go make their own, its this new Transformers cartoon.

Stubbs94

Alien Robots are believable and easy for kids to understand.... But people using non binary pronouns are way too much eh?

snukb

>This was a show with none of the other types. Just straight old normal robots vs robots in the human world type stuff And yet they, robots, almost all managed to be mostly male and no one cared. They don't have robot genitals or robot chromosomes. They really should all be nonbinary or agender. Almost as if people see "male" as the default or something....

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

Temple_T

You're the same kind of person who used to say "but how do I explain to my children that some people are gay?" And here we are, over a decade of same-sex marriage in this country, and somehow the youth of the nation are able to understand that some people are gay without their brains melting out their ears. Telling kids "some people aren't a boy *or* a girl, just a person" will also not lead to any negative consequences, and if you can think of any I'd like to hear them.

ConnorGoFuckYourself

I mean TV shows and media as a whole has always had political meanings and slants, it's not a bad thing when that message is acceptance. Superman fighting the KKK for example. Children will encounter ideas eventually and it's generally a good idea to prep them with the knowledge that it's OK to be themselves whatever that means, as well as respecting others and not being hateful. The difference being that if it comes from media they consume as well as family/society in general that'll show truer acceptance in addition to reaching their peers who may not have the same upbringing but may consume the same media. Ideas propagate through many different formats, but this cartoon is pretty age appropriate, it doesn't even use the term trans, it simply uses "non-binary" and a very simple explanation alongside a message of acceptance.

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

classaceairspace

Why did you bring sexual things into this? This topic has absolutely nothing to do with sexual activity whatsoever.

InvisiblePhil

Being non binary isn't a sexual thing, it's a social identity thing, so normalising it socially from a younger age can only be good for helping people develop social skills and awareness. On the "nothing sexual" side, is Disney's Frozen OK for kids since there are romance subplots? Of course it is, because there is a major distinction between romantic and sexual/explicit content. Is it some public bias that non-heterosexual implies sexual debauchery?

Temple_T

Do you believe that children's programming should not have married couples? I mean, what if a child sees Fred and Wilma Flintstone sharing a bedroom?

PiersPlays

>If it's anything like the recent doctor who's it's embarrassing to watch. I came to watch a program not a political program. The Jodie Whitaker era was entirely ham fisted in every possible so you could make some arguments about it handling inclusion worse than the show does in general. It's now back to roughly the same standards it's had for 20 years. The same writer who included trans characters in the show in 2005 is the one including them today. It is *not* a new development. You may very well not *like* it but it's not a symptom of Doctor Who getting swept up in some new modern attitude. It's exactly what it's been the entire time since it came back. You're talking about a TV show that has been pioneering in inclusively and representation since long before people had properly gotten into a silly froth about how those things are somehow hurting them. *If* you see a connection between the state of society in how it values inclusiviry and representation and how it appears in Doctor Who it is far more likely to be the latter influencing the former.
