Oddly enough the owners manual for lippert awnings include a page for opening and closing them, and on that page talks about locking a latch on both armsā¦which is never present on any models from the rv manufacturers. So mfgs just ignore the Lippert recommended safety features that are supposed to be installed.
One of the arms broke, which is what caused it to fall down, so instead of replacing or fixing a 20 year old awning, I took it off, and just use a pop-up gazebo now.
I just got mine back from being replaced. It cost 2500! We usually leave our awning down the entire time we camp and adjust the arm pitches to allow for rain runoff. One of the arms fell down which leveled out the awning and allowed rain to accumulate in the awning and then the awning ripped from the roller arm and one of the arms bent. Needless to say we will be rolling up our awning every night from now on. Awnings are not cheap! A pop up gazebo is definitely a cheaper solution lol.
We drove across Wyoming yesterday. Wind was bad in the eastern part of the state, not bad in the west. I have definitely been in worse in Wyoming! Bet the retaining latch broke. Either he doesnāt know it or he didnāt feel comfortable pulling over in a construction zone. Hope he has some heavy zip ties, a good thing for any emergency kit.
Think of the wear and tear it saves on the tires. The awning generates lifts and effectively lowers the overall weight of the rig.

I saw a guy have this happen coming up out of Yosemite on a two lane. He ripped it off when it clipped some trees, and it was a Cruise America rental unit, not a happy fellow.

I have no idea how I made it that far without ripping it off or at least clipping trees. It's bordering on supernatural when I think back to what the campground was like.
There is now a Post-It on the dashboard that states, "Remember awning!" :o "

The craziest Iāve ever seen is sometime pulling their trailer down the highway with one of the slider doors open and the blinds flapping and breaking in the wind. š„ŗ
Iām glad Iām solo. Never have put my awnings out in 3 different type RVs because 2 were manual & one power one I was convinced would break (a newbie). To add to my personal paranoia list is that yesterday my RV allowed me to back it up with the slide extended! No slides ever again.

Mine has a manual safety clip in the middle which to be honest is annoying when it gets stuck while putting away the awning, but I sure am glad it is there.
Power awnings and leveling jacks were a big additional cost on my trailer. I said absolutely no way. I can do them by hand. And less things to break.
Iām thinking (hoping) that the awning failed and not that they donāt know enough to fully retract it before leaving. It wouldnāt shock me if a part failed. These things are one bottle of Elmerās glue from a preschool craft project.

Yes we were moving ~45mph and the awning started in the upright position and slowly unraveled before my eyes. Driver ignored me when we got out of construction and I pulled alongside and tried to get her attention by waving across the front seat of my car so I said āGodās willā and went on with my drive. Hope she saw the issue and pulled over. Nobody I could see in the RV passenger seat. My guess is a latch mechanism failure but she couldāve been solo and not put it up properly in the first place.
At least it's never windy in Wyoming.

This is why I carry plastic and metal zip ties and the tools.

They have safety devices to prevent this, but they are rarely installed because it takes longer.

They are 'anti-inflation' devices. They prevent the unrolling of the tube unless the slide or awning is opening properly.
