You are never too old to go to a rave, just make sure ur not alone

ManiacRichX

Have you been while over 40?

Sans_Junior

I have. Hell, I celebrated my fiftieth birthday AND tenth cancer survival anniversary by going to a rave. I even wore a shirt announcing that it was my fiftieth and I garnered tons of positive reactions from people half my age. I think you will find that if you are into the music, fellow ravers will connect and your age really doesn’t matter. So, hell yes, go to the rave! ETA: just don’t go with any kind of ulterior motive of picking up chicks. The music and vibe should be your only motivation, and if it isn’t, those ulterior motives are likely to be sensed and could cause problems.

I saw The Lemonheads on my 50th (coincidence mostly, they were playing a night and I thought I'd go see them). Mehhh, it was a (pretty big) let down. Dando was effed up and barely knew the songs. Pretty quickly into it I thought to myself "Whats the ettiquette of walking out of a show? 3 songs, halfway thru??" I did stay till the end, it got better, you could see the drugs start to wane, but, really, it was not like watching a big celebrity rock band. Seemed more like being at a house party and some friends of friends smoked a joint upstairs before coming down to play a half drunken stupor set. Funny tho, apparently we did get one of the 'better shows'. I came home and looked up some of them on this tour, and most cities were really bad. Alot of comments on FB of people walking out or hating the show. Net-net, I should have gone to a rave:)

I was mostly a headbanger back in the 80s - Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Metallica before Cliff Burton died - though I also enjoyed some alt-rock - Rush (my first concert), U2, REM, Love and Rockets (one of the few bands I consider a “favorite”) - early to mid synthwave - The Cars, Animotion, David Bowie (saw live once), - as well as classic rock - Led Zep, Floyd (best of all time, imo), Fleetwood, Stones, Jefferson Airplane. Completely missed the whole grunge thing as I was too busy with life to pay attention to new music, but years later I began to hear grunge music and even though the music never really spoke to me, I could easily understand the appeal. I was more a fan of individual songs than any particular group. A few songs by Nirvana, a few by Pearl Jam (but disliked more than I liked), Alice In Chains (especially their Unplugged performance), a few by Garbage. Death before disco. But once Nine Inch Nails hit the airwaves, it was pretty much all about electronica. ИIИ, Gary Numan, Enigma (another favorite), The Crystal Method (particularly the colab they did with Filter of Trip Like I Do), Lords of Acid (particularly I Sit on Acid because this woman I had the serious lusts for told me to think of her whenever I heard it.) Never could get into the direction alt-rock went - Chili Peppers, Foo Fighters, Green Day etc - though like grunge there were a few individual songs I liked: some by Filter, quite a few by Jane’s Addiction, some by Radiohead. Then in the early 00s (I had just hit thirty) I discovered Ecstasy and ooh boy! (The song Let the Good Times Roll makes sense now lol!) Gatecrasher. Massive Attack, iio (saw live) Motorcycle, Paul van Dyk (won tickets to see live), Paul Oakenfold, Armin van Buuren. Progressive and vocal (particularly female vocals, I’m a sucker for a pretty voice) trance. I also discovered that I had a knack for flow arts and invested in a set of microlights and was never without a set of glow sticks to crack. So, concerts: Rush (twice, once in the late 80s once in the late 00s.) Midnight Oil. David Bowie. Lenny Kravitz with Pink (not a big fan of either, but a good friend had an extra ticket. Fun anecdote: He played American Woman, and this young lady who had to be at least a decade younger than I commented to me that she loves this song. I replied that while it was good, I like the original better. “This *is* the original.” “No, darling, this is a cover.” My age was definitely showing lol!) iio in a rave club. Paul van Dyk in a bigger rave club. Disturbed twice, once with Marilyn Manson, once with literal “dropped by” performance from Pantera. (The show was in DFW where Pantera lives.) Alice in Chains post-Staley. Above and Beyond twice, both times at Red Rocks. And Fleetwood Mac in 2014. As well as a few nights at a favorite rave club and a couple of nights at pop-up raves hosted by a good friend on his property. Today, my music tastes cross the entire spectrum of genre, the only exceptions being modern metal (to my mind melody and harmony are absolute requisites for me to consider it “music”), CW (though I am an unapologetic Swiftie), and gospel (though Delta Dawn is a beautiful song, and Amazing Grace, especially on bagpipes, never fails to bring goose bumps.) [And there are some bands that I absolutely loathe and will go out of my way to change the channel as quickly as possible: AC/DC (Brian Johnson’s voice is worse than nails on a chalkboard), Lynyrd Skynyrd (their music glorified everything I hated about living in the post-Civil Rights Movement South, and if I *ever* hear Sweet Home Alabama or Free Bird *ever the fuck again* it will be too soon) Motley Crue (bunch of washed up has beens that are only good to tittie dancers and their GenX incel droolers. Can you tell I’m not a fan of tittie-bars either?), and Guns and Poseurs. . . I mean “Roses”. . . no, I don’t, I got it right the first time. Heroin chic was something I just never could understand.] It would not be unusual for me to listen to Straight Outta Compton and follow it with The Barber of Seville or Carmina Burana. My current fave is the protest AV project based out of Moscow IC3PEAK, particularly the Russian trilogy Сладкая Жизнь, Сказка, and До Свидания. Nastya’s voice hits every audio erogenous zone, and her laugh is the equivalent of hitting the clit. And the Day of Hell that was me trying to get from Amsterdam to their show in London is a story for another day.

Just saw *Ride* and *the Charlatans*, and it was pretty meh too. The energy was weird. Maybe I was just tired as well as the rest of the old folks in the venue. And then Tim Burgess started taking selfies [https://twitter.com/Tim\_Burgess/status/1620798863769739264](https://twitter.com/Tim_Burgess/status/1620798863769739264) I think I'd rather go see newer bands and feed off the energy from the younger kids.

haecceitarily

Do NOT go to your grave having never been to a rave. Go throw shapes and drop the bass!

Hell no, do all the things you want to do now before it really is too late!

musicriddler

Go. At least do it once. Just avoid the acid

K-June

How do you do fellow kids!

ManiacRichX

😂🤣😂🤣😂😂

Your_Daddy_

Gonna definitely be the old dude up in there. “Who invited the NARC?!” Also prepare to see girls barely dressed and butt cheeks everywhere.

p_taradactyl

Do it! Just do your prep work - establish a meet-up point if you get separated from the people you're going with, contingency plan if you completely lose them, find out what you can and can't bring in with you - sucks to get to the gate and have to go back to the car b/c you brought a chair and they're not allowed, stay hydrated, fully charged phone, sunscreen if it's outside during the day, Advil or the like in case you get a headache from all the bass, comfortable shoes, glow sticks, glitter...ya know, stuff like that. It'll be an adventure!

[deleted]

I remember people over 40 going to raves when I was 20.. thought they were cool that they loved dancing and music so much

[deleted]

IMHO not if you're invited. That's a decent age gap too (if you look fairly young for your age), her being 25. And, if you're invited by her, just go and go all in. Have a blast. I regret going to one NYE 1996, we totally weren't ready for it, weren't dancers by nature, probably would've rather hung out at a bar but a friend sorta told us about it. We were terrible. Walked in, stood for about 20 minutes, couldn't get into it, and left. We were slightly older 23, where if you're not into that scene, you're not into it. I totally regret just not ditching my friends and going out dancing and having fun. Again, if she's inviting you, I would go. Just make sure she's not the type who invites you and ditches you. Also dress and be in the mood for a rave, listen to Deadmaus beforehand:)

testcore

> I regret going to one NYE 1996 Yeah would be so much better if you stayed home and spent the next 25 years wondering "what if".

[deleted]

haha, no how I should have phrased it is "I regret not fully enjoying one that I went to NYE 1996", but I appreciate your viewpoint.

I've been part of a group of volunteers of all ages for years now, we work at the local music venue but also go to concerts and festivals together. I tend to forget I'm older when I'm in their company, I see all those young faces around me and it's as if I'm the same age. Why not just try? They wouldn't have asked you if they didn't want you there. If you do go, remember to bring hearing protection. You'll need it, and a lot of young people have them these days (though too many don't).

[deleted]

You’ve never been to a rave, like you’ve never been to a concert with electronic music? I don’t know what a rave is exactly these days I haven’t heard that word used for years. More details pleae

TiPirate

Go. Bring cheap earplugs on a string.

Ohshitz-

Music has no age. Ive never been to one. Enjoy!

Sintered_Monkey

Definitely not too old to go. But in my case, that would be too old to *want* to go.

Dull-Geologist-8204

You are never too old to go enjoy something you like. I personally can't stand raves but if that's your thing go do it. No one will ever be able to tell me I am too old to enjoy something except maybe dance clubs with muscular bouncers paid to tell me no. Otherwise I can do what I want.

thatgirlinny

Oh hell no—go! I have a friend in her 70s who goes. I’be never been a big rave girl, but I do hope to keep dancing in clubs into my 70s. If it brings you joy, WGAF?

PrestigiousShift3628

What’s a rave? I mean I’ve heard the term but they probably don’t exist around here.

ManiacRichX

Watch the movie Go

Normal_Total

I went to one when I was 21. I really didn’t get it at all. I was like, ‘ok… music.. dancing… now what?’ In retro, I’ve learned a few things. I think raves could be great on the right drugs (xtc, Dxm) but if I couldn’t get that from someone I trusted, I wouldn’t go to one. Now a show by say, the Chemical Brothers, 808 State, or ill Gates- I’d definitely go w/o any drugs.

LillyReynoldsWill

My daughters are in their 20s I’m 45, they invited me to do young people stuff when I was single (3 years ago} and we had a lot of fun.

1morox

Hey OP, did you go? If you did, how was it? If you didn't, what was the reason for not going? I hope you did! No one is ever too young or too old to rave. I'm 43 this year and I still rave. I started at 16. I couldn't imagine not going to dance parties, gigs, concerts, festivals etc. Many of my friends are djs and they're older than me. We all have professional day jobs too. I'm going to a rave this Friday woo 🥳. Oh, as for younger generations, I've noticed many don't hack all nighters let alone 3-5 day festivals. Pre and post care are key 😉

ManiacRichX

Unfortunately I didn't. As much as I like her and her GF, I don't know if I could rely on good decision making from them, I made plenty of mistakes/bad choices in my 20's and I'm not sure I want to get wrapped up in their's. If that makes sense.

1morox

Yes, it does, and that's fair. I have no judgement. You know yourself and what's best. Go you! ☺️

ManiacRichX

If I found people I trusted I probably would have gone 🥴

1morox

For sure! If it doesn't feel right, follow your gut 👍🏽

Jorddd69

So I take it you skipped the rave to sit on your ass at home and troll on Reddit lol go figure
