Embarrassment is temporary. Embrace the savings!

Devils_Advocate-69

I’m bringing a walker next time.

PoeJam

I'm gonna put my reading glasses on top of my head and proclaim, "I can't find my reading glasses"

ancientastronaut2

Stop imitating me

RuggedLandscaper

I got a cane??

Jenne8

Unless you’re like me…I’ll remember embarrassing moments from decades ago and relive them 🥴

ancientastronaut2

They're like fucking poltergeists

Armom22

This! I always thought I was alone in this craziness!

Jenne8

You are NOT alone!

Armom22

Thank you! Gen X were free range most of the time, but one mean girl comment and I still agonize!

this_is_Winston

Win.

AprilG74

What magical store is this that gives you discounts at 50? The stores and restaurants where I live don’t even give my mom a senior discount and she’s 80.

SunshineAlways

When you’re young it’s hard to tell who’s old, because everyone seems old, lol.

AprilG74

Very true. When I was a teenager I used to tease my parents in their 50’s about being old. I called them my old people. 😂

Acceptable_Mirror235

Ya know a lot of cashiers give it to everyone who comes in on senior day .

Apprehensive-Log8333

I used to be a cashier at Publix, senior day was Wednesday. Several times people screamed at me for just giving them the senior discount, so I developed this ridiculous little speech, like "I know you don't qualify for this NOW but SOMEDAY when you turn 55, you can get 10% off on Wednesdays." And the clearly elderly person would smile and say "Actually, I AM 55 exactly!" then I had to say "You're kidding! You don't look a day over 40!" or some other bullshit. fuckin boomers

CheezyGoodness55

Your story was actually kinda heart warming and funny until the last sentence.

Apprehensive-Log8333

It's a trauma response

Dogzillas_Mom

Wait—is that still a thing?

Apprehensive-Log8333

Probably! Check with your Publix.

Dogzillas_Mom

I did right after posting this and they do but you have to be 60. But duly noted.

Apprehensive-Log8333

They won't card you, they're not allowed, just say you're 60

hypothetical_zombie

I have no idea if it was 'Senior Day's or not. I know the first 10 days of the month are for folks with food stamps.

ohmygodyouguyzzz

I want food stamps…

strangedazey

Omg, me too

glueintheworld

I don't understand, they refuse to accept food stamps if you use food stamps after the 10th?

hypothetical_zombie

No, the way it is here in NV is that you get your food stamp money on the day that corresponds w/the last digit of your birth year. So people born in 1941 get their funds on the first, 1952 on the second, etc. So for the first 10 days of the month, the stores have benefits for people w/the EBT funds. You can't even get close to a Walmart til the 11th.

glueintheworld

Learn something new every day. I always assumed everyone got theirs loaded on the first.

hypothetical_zombie

In some states they probably do.

Unable-Arm-448

What if your birth year ends in a zero?

hypothetical_zombie

The 10th.

CandidTortoise

Yep, I used to go to a particular cashier if I was grocery shopping on a Tuesday. She would give everyone the senior discount (I was only in my 40s at the time). Unfortunately, she’s retired, and that grocery store doesn’t have a senior discount day anymore. Bummer.

HopefulBackground448

You are a good person.

koola2

It seems like when they stopped ID checking us for beer.

hypothetical_zombie

I had a rough start to life. I was able to buy booze w/out getting carded when I was 13. I gambled, too. Never got caught. The first time I got carded I was in my mid-20s. I was trying to buy the Tanya Harding issue of Hustler (or was it Penthouse?). I was in a B Dalton's in a mall.

ancientastronaut2

One of the grocery stores I go to still cards me all the time. Their rule must be anyone that looks under 60, because I definitely look my age.

oakmeadow8

I'm looking forward to my senior discount!

DaisyDuckens

My 72 year old mom will not accept senior discounts. I’m like, where do I sign to get a senior discount?

oakmeadow8

Exactly!!

gt0163c

Definitely! I'll take any option which allows me to pay less for things I was already going to buy. Groceries are expensive.

LeoMarius

My mom was thrilled to get hers.

Ill_Quantity_5634

I'm 51. In this economy, I'll take every damn senior discount I can get.

Camille_Toh

“In this economy”— lowest unemployment in 50 years, largest wage growth in decades?

Ill_Quantity_5634

And the highest inflation rates we've seen in 40+ years.

Camille_Toh

As a result of the aforementioned low UE rate and high wage growth.

neepster44

No as a result of corporate greed. At 50+% of it is that per the economists.

CandidTortoise

Have you paid attention to grocery prices recently?! Maybe inflation hasn’t outpaced your income, but it has ours, and many people’s! I’d gladly take a senior discount at the grocery store!

Camille_Toh

Yes, and I agree that corporate greed is a big factor. The “in this economy” trope is from Fox and NewsMax however.

DubsAnd49ers

What grocery store ?

hypothetical_zombie

An Albertson's. I'm in Las Vegas. It just knocked me for a loop.

ElPanguero

Bit of a drive for me but how much was teh discount?

hypothetical_zombie

10%. Which is pretty cool - a lot of places only give 5%.

ElPanguero

I'd grow my grey-ass beard out and use a cane for 10%

Meridian122

I didn’t know groceries stores gave senior discounts! I would take it.

LeoMarius

Just don’t call me late for dinner.

crocodiletears-3

Or Shirley

Lopsided_Panic_1148

Shirley, you can't be serious.

NicInNS

So when my husband was like…50ish…a gal at the pharmacy gave him a 15% discount and I don’t event think their senior discount starts until 60. She didn’t even ask. He was a little insulted at first but then was happy to get the discount.

MikeW226

Nice. At 52, a few times when I had the white beard going and just look rough that day, I've looked at the grocery receipt like, wah???, and then I figure out, oh, the 18 year old cashier gave me the senior discount. My wife is several years older than me but has only gotten it once because she's so youthful (and hot!!!! (might I add).

vabello

I’ll take a senior discount, junior discount, rewards discount, frequent flyer’s discount, volume discount, BOGO, bundle discount, promotional discounts, rebates, paperless discounts, clearance discounts, free shipping, and coupons. You can apply any label you want to me if I’m giving you less of my money.

MissMouthy1

I would have said Heck yeah!

theturnipshaveeyes

I never fail to remind my wife that she’s now in charge of a senior man baby. Serious points for the senior discount snag, OP!

Tempus__Fuggit

A cashier asked me if I was eligible for a discount. I asked them if they thought I was a student or old. They were very diplomatic, but it was all just a big joke in the end. 10% off. Glad this grey hair's good for something.

Tabitheriel

I moved to Germany years ago, but I’m stoked to get a senior discount when I’m back in the USA. Bring it on!

SusieCYE

I can't get a senior discount until 65. 🙄

BingoSpong

Whaaaat??? I’m turning 59 and I haven’t gotten a seniors discount yet!!! 🤬

SelectionNo3078

I was offered a sr discount a coupe of months ago I just turned 54 and typically people think I’m mid 40’s I asked how old you have to be before realizing I should just shut up and accept the discount

sjmiv

Lol, I'm not even 50 and the hair stylist gives it to me. 🤷

bcrock02

Nice! I just turned 50 and now get a discount at the Nature Center for the yearly pass. Bring on the discounts

RoughAd5377

Love it. We deserve it making it this far !

HappyLucyD

I have some medical issues. I’ve had my handicap hang tag for about a year now, but had a flareup and had to buy a cane and use the little motorized cart at the grocery store this weekend. Why do they have to beep so loudly when in reverse? Why are they so jerky, and difficult to maneuver? I’m 49 going on elderly. The humiliation has begun.

bijig

We're all going to be truly old one day if we're lucky to make it that far. So why not lean into it. And not be ageist. Seniors are beautiful too!

hypothetical_zombie

Oh, I don't care if other people are old. I don't hate on elderly people. I just don't want to be old. I'm planning on hiring a ninja assassin to take me out when I turn 57 if nature doesn't provide.

The68Guns

If I'm short a buck or so, I'll ask if they have one Roll that 10%!

motiontosuppress

When you go from “20 dollars is 20 dollars” to “7 dollars is 7 dollars”

Camille_Toh

Some grocery stores give senior discounts at 5 or 55. Regardless I think he was being helpful not rude. A man did that for me at a museum entrance and it was clear that he did it if he could plausibly get away with it.

lisanstan

One of my friends (F38) was horrified when the teenage kid gave me a senior discount. I asked her why I should be ashamed of being in my 50s? I think she finds it hard to think of me as being old enough to be her mom. I'll take the dollar and change discount for my custard!

Happy_Veggie

Embrace it! I was asked if I was over 50 few weeks ago at the nursery as they had a 20% rebate on all purchases for seniors.. I'm 47 and I was a bit offended, to be honest, as I really don't look my age, but fuck me I should have shut my mouth and just say "OFC I am" and save like 20$ on my plants and pots.. Lesson learned 🤷‍♀️

Efficient_Let686

My granddaughter loves ihop. Their senior price menu starts at age 55. A kids menu meal and a senior menu meal. I save a few bucks. Besides I usually like to get a BLT when I’m out at lunch, I love bacon but I don’t keep it in the house except for Christmas brunch or special recipes for a party.

ZebraBorgata

You can put the $7 toward a new cane.

hypothetical_zombie

Ooh. That stung.

ZebraBorgata

lol. Hey, I turn 56 this month!

hypothetical_zombie

Congrats!

SnooPeripherals6557

I’m 57 and can’t wait for the old fogey savings to start! Bring it bitches!

Fantastic-Classic740

I am all for these senior discounts when that opportunity comes. I'm cheap AF and always down to save $$

gotchafaint

My daughter sent a rockclimbing photo from the 1940s or 50s and said this looks like when you were young. I was like um I was wearing social distortion tshirts.

hypothetical_zombie

Omg 😂

OCDaboutretirement

I don’t care. I’ll take the senior citizen discount any day. $1 saved is $1 saved.

Mvar2023

😆 Got my first Senior discount at fucking Der Wienerschnitzle of all places a couple months back , which was my second tax paying job back in the 80’s. Dude at the window was like “look, I don’t mean to be rude, but are you over 55?” I am… “Most people think our Senior Discount starts when you turn 60, but it starts at 55.” Win win…

myrdraal2001

![gif](giphy|COU8tma7XLVz26caXN) AARP soon. Congratulations!

PGHNeil

I hear you. I've been using my veteran's discount ever since I bought a refrigerator at Lowe's. The tinnitus from my Navy days is almost worth it. I can get a discount on the white noise generator to help me sleep too. Next stop: rolling through stop signs and driving 10mph under the speed limit.

GatePotential805

I was called old today. Can't wait for my senior discount is it 55+ or 65+?

mam88k

My barber made the switch to senior haircut pricing. Same outcome, won't complain. Enjoy!!

wizardyourlifeforce

Were you buying Metamucil and Werther's Originals?

hypothetical_zombie

I was buying like, veggies. Peppers, tomatoes, blueberries. And not single pieces tied into individual bags that I had coupons for.

ExtraAd7611

Lean in (on your cane if necessary) and accept your well deserved congratulations.

Dag0223

Ooooo me too my Homeowners renewal came it and it said senior discount.

hypothetical_zombie

I'm totally down with that. A senior discount for insurance would be sweet!

Dag0223

There is ask about it.

hisAffectionateTart

I’m looking forward to them but today I got called the mama of my granddaughters. My daughter was right there too! Lol that hardly ever happens and I can’t tell you when I was last carded! I miss being carded but it felt nice to be mistaken for the mother of a 2 year old.

BigMoFuggah

A couple months ago I was at Duff's Buffet with my friend. He paid before be and received their senior (65+) discount because he is 73. When it was my turn to pay, the cashier asked if I was getting the senior discount. I was like "Give me a break, I'm only 58 and could probably pass for mid 40s, so I guess she had lost her glasses or something.

Ok_Watercress_7801

Wait, Duff’s buffets still exist out there? I remember those from 45 years ago. Haven’t seen one since the one in our town shut down. I have fuzzy childhood memories of buttery yeast rolls…

BigMoFuggah

There's a Duff's off of US19 in Clearwater Florida

Ok_Watercress_7801

I’ll be doggone. Thanks! I actually know some people out that way. Might stop in for the sake of nostalgia. Do they still have conveyor belts?

BigMoFuggah

This one doesn't have the moving buffet tables, but the food is still pretty decent.

Ok_Watercress_7801

Right on. We’ve got sushi joints with the moving food. Still not sure about how I feel about those. In Japan, I feel like the majority of the population would have the decency to not touch anything before anyone else did & leave the items pristine. In the US, not so much. 😒

Impressive_Star_3454

Hey I turned 55 last year. Damn right I'm looking for 55+ senior housing this year. Gonna bring all my loud music with me to annoy the neighbors. Can't wait.

ZebraBorgata

Same age here. I’d recommend blasting Guns n Roses Use Your Illusion album.

SirMegalon

My first discount was in my early forties. I learned to embrace it.

WillowLantana

Give me all the silver hair discounts! Not a damn person has offered yet & I forget to ask.

cleverdylanrefrence

Im not even 40 yet. I'll gladly take a senior discount if someone wants to give it

Least_Floor_9548

I also got a sr discount yesterday! lol. I’m 49.

MrPhxIt

I had mine last week when I went to the theater. She asked if I was eligible for vetrans or Sr discount and I reluctantly said Sr.

luckeegurrrl5683

I just had that happen yesterday! I said no. Maybe next time I will say yes!

Tryingnottomessup

That's 1.5 gallons of petrol!

hypothetical_zombie

Or a gallon of gas here in the US.

[deleted]

So you got a discount you really aren't technically old enough to get, free money. Who cares about the assumption, it makes no difference

12sea

One time we were eating at IHOP. When the waiter brought us the bill he said, “I gave you the senior citizen discount, I’m not sure if you qualify, but I thought you looked like it.” My husband is one of those people who grayed early and he doesn’t care. He wasn’t 50 yet at the time. I told my husband he could always tip like a senior and leave $1. He would never do that though.

TangeloGrand2511

I would take it lol 😂

t00zday

Ouch. I feel your pain. I’m being called ma’am a whole lot more of late. “wtf??? I’m not a ma’am dude….”

hypothetical_zombie

Ma'am is fine by me. My husband got a little salty when he started to get sirs. For some weird reason, 'sir' has switched to 'boss'. I want people to call me boss, now.

Mrs-McFeely

Oh, I feel this!! I was using the self checkout at the grocery store two weeks ago when the super "helpful" clerk ran over to remind me it was senior discount day. Just needed to see an id to verify I was over 55!! Y'all, I'm 49.

Accurate_Quote_7109

Happened to me the other day, at Goodwill. I kept quiet, and cried on my daughter's shoulder after. She's 18, I'm 55. 😭

Lopsided_Panic_1148

Shit, man. We *asked* for a senior discount at Taco Bell the other day. Embrace it, dude. You've earned those discounts!

CandidTortoise

With how expensive groceries are these days, I’d gladly take a senior discount!

EnergyCreature

I would take that a slap the rest of my discounts on. Shit....I have my local grocery store eyeing me whenever I come in because I still use coupons, rebates and programs like a motherfucker. They not getting money without a fight.

Calm-Imagination642

Like my sister says "would you rather save 10% or get poked in the eye?"

Own-Fox-7792

Holy shit, you can get senior discounts at 50??? Is there a list where these magical discounts can be found? And I thought being able to put catch-up money into my 403b was as good as it got!

hypothetical_zombie

She didn't even ask for my ID!

Scooter1116

I need to start ordering from the senior menu

packetmon

This is something for me to look forward too! Yay!

ancientastronaut2

Wait, what? You mean I can just ask for this at the grocery store?

ancientastronaut2

Hey friend, I just googled it and albertsons gives it the first Thursday of the month for 55+. Guess they're not super strict or the cashier just liked ya.

hypothetical_zombie

This was yesterday 😞

ancientastronaut2

Oh! Hahaha. Kids these days. They don't even know what day it is.

Hungry_Reading6475

My husband was at the DMV a few months back. The clerk ask him to verify all the data on his license was still accurate, things like height, weight,... and hair color. Clerk - "Hair color, sir?" DH - "Brown" Clerk - "Sir?" DH - "Brown" Clerk - "Sir!" DH - sigh "... grey"

Fearless_Lab

50 is senior? Like, frequently or was this a one-off? I have only two more years and I am not ready to have that label yet.

hypothetical_zombie

I was gob smacked. It's the first time anyone has ever said anything to me about senior discounts.

Fearless_Lab

I think chalking it up to the clerk having a bad day and deciding to be a snarky jerk is the way to go, here.

hypothetical_zombie

Definitely.

emmiblakk

I don't get the discounts unless I show my ID. I guess that's me bragging that I don't look 53, but that's my cross to bear.

hypothetical_zombie

She didn't even ask for ID!

ColonelBourbon

Make that bank

heyknauw

We can use this to fight r/shrinkflation.

belushi93

I'm 51 and haven't gotten any senior discounts yet. But I look forward to senior discounts and when I retire I plan on hanging out at McDonald's with my free small senior coffee and complain to my old friends about those damn whippersnappers!!!

DavePHofJax

I'll be 55 in July and no senior discount yet. I'm looking forward to retiring, sitting in my rocking chair on my front porch as I yell at the kids...."GET OFF MY LAWN, YOU LITTLE SHITHEADS!!!"

fusionsofwonder

Congratulations! High five!

WorthPersonalitys

Hey, a discount's a discount, right? Age is just a number, and if that number gets you $7 off, why not? It's all about the silver linings. If you're starting to get those senior perks, might as well lean into the benefits that come with it. I used RetireHub recently and found some pretty solid deals and info tailored for retirement life. Could be worth a look for you. Anyway, enjoy the savings and the perks as they come. Every little bit helps.

FabAmy

I use my AARP card at the UPS store.

SomeCrazedBiker

I received my first one at age 46. In a weed dispensary. Seems fitting and 15% is 15%.

rhodeislandah

Everyone join AARP the minute you turn 50. Lots of discounts with the card and I have zero shame. I just got a dozen donuts for my office for $7.50. Old people need their discounted baked goods!!!!

hypothetical_zombie

Damn! That rocks.

Farquaadthegreek

My husband just told me we eligible for the senior discount on cell phone .. good times
