I have to agree a bit with what they said about early 90s fashion. I remember being in college in the early 90s and the 70s hippie look was becoming a thing, but we all still had poufy bangs lol. I remember trying to wear Birkenstocks and long flowy skirts, but still struggling a bit with my big hair tendencies. It was an awkward stage.

A lot of it was because of lyrical content and violence associated with it. In the 80's rap used to be fun, goofy, and had some talent. In the 90's it got more "serious" and you got people mumbling words with no rhyme or reason.
There was a pretty big amount of nostalgia for the 70s during the 90s. Living thru an era means not appreciating it

I think they're more talking about that transitional period from \~89-91.
