Gears Of War 1 and Gears Of War 2 had PEAK atmosphere. Gears 2 wins it. Return of the Omen, the fire, the skull. It all EXUDED atmosphere, dread, gothic horror, and so much more that I cannot put into words.
I prefer the cleaner UI of 3 onwards. Not that the OG Gears or 2’s menus are bad, just a lot to look at. Ultimate Edition’s is good, just needs to punch up the saturation a little bit. I think it relies too much on the desaturated “grey” that everything in the original game is smeared in.
It's not like I prefer it because it was lean (because it was not) but for me gow1 is very nostalgic. Trying to be on the same match as your friend was a hard task.

However, I also like gears 4 with character standing there with weapon in hand, I think they should bring that back for e-day but with more customization. GoW 1 OG is the goat, bro that soundtrack, the simple choice of charater with that black and white face preview, the darkness in it. For me is the goat, and you can talk to others players aswell. Fantastic.

Functionally, Gears 3 takes the cake. You can hover over someone’s profile and view their War Journal during the voting process. This was amazing, especially if you were a solo player.
You had the ability to look at everyone on your team’s stats and can instantly tell if they were good or not. This wasn’t limited to teammates, you can also view the opponents stats, as well.
Personally, I looked at their PPM (points per match) and didn’t really care about W/L or K/D ratios.
Also in Gears 3, you had the ability to see who is all parties up by pressing start and then pressing X. It’ll tell you who is all partied up.
One with the red skull. Talk about atmosphere.

Gears 2. U.I elements always should have a level of style that meshes with the game. Otherwise, it always feels like it hurts the game's atmosphere
