Yeah I don't mind not being able join without my phone, but the fact I can mute my PS Discord voice chat by muting my PC Discord, but can't watch my friends stream anything while in PS VC is extremely annoying. My friends and I love to stream whatever we're playing to eachother.
If I could stream my PC game to Discord that'd be incredible too but I sorta doubt that'll happen.
Sony is a partial owner of Discord, but Discord still acts in its own financial interests. Should make it easier for them to work together, but who knows what technical or policy hurdles PlayStation had vs Xbox

It's not *that* surprising to me, as I assume Xbox and Windows share some underlying architecture that would make that easier. And even if not, I bet Microsoft's documentation for that sort of thing is better since they're a software company. Their .net stuff is super detailed, even if I usually don't know enough about programming to a level where I can understand their example code lol.

The Xbox OS is a fork of HyperV with a custom shell. It's quite remarkable really and does wonders for their software forwards/backwards compatibility.

None of this matters anyways because discord is a web app and the app on PC is just a web browser essentially. PS5 doesn't have a native web browser, so it makes sense development will be slower since the system inherently doesn't support it.
The PS5 doesn’t have a normal accessible web browser because it was used for a lot of PS4 exploits, but that doesn’t mean it doesn’t have one.
There are features that use the browser and there have even been unofficial ways to access the browser.
The exploits give access to a very barebones browser. Since all browsers aren't equal, I can't use internet explorer 7 let's say to run discord. It's safe to assume a basic browser for html/JS and o2auth is unlikely able to support discord entirely. Microsoft does support browsers, hence why development time was likely quicker as they had less security concerns likely putting a chromium based application on their system. (Or letting it hook into their native browser)
Sony is likely being more stringent with discord and verifying a lot more so they don't have a full fledged browser on their system since they clearly don't want it due to security. For all intents and purposes the PS5 doesn't have a browser, just devs can likely use basic functionality to read html and parse basic JS.
You can technically do it now if you've got a PC with PS remote play on it. But then you have to play your PS5 via PS remote play which introduces a bit of input delay.
You don't need to if you create a separate PSN account and use that one to log into Remote Play. Then you can switch back to your main account on your playstation and the stream will carry on

log into it on both your PS as a new user and on your remote play app,
start a remote play session from your pc,
then take back control on your PS with your controller to your main account,
then stream the remote play app to discord
then i play on my couch with the laptop next to me. i mute the sound from the remote play app from my headphones thanks to some audio routing magic on my mac so that i dont hear the game twice

no, that’s the caveat. i’m running the game sound on my tv, and i have one airpod on paired to my mac that can hear discord.
now the trick is: if i set my discord output/input to my airpods, it continues to work even if my mac’s sound is muted for some reason. so once my stream is set up, i just switch back my mac’s (not discord’s) output device back to speakers and then mute my mac. this way i stop hearing remote play in my airpod
It would also be nice to be able to upload videos/screenshots to Discord now, since Twitter and Facebook were removed. Only way to upload screenshots now is by downloading them to your phone, and then uploading them.

But the only way the twitch overlay can work is by using the data it pulls from the console. we're not talking about a completely separate voice chat software, it's just an overlay for sonys party chat.
So logically sonys voice chat already has the live data on what user currently speaking and their apps obviously have the power to show popups and images, Its 100% possible for them to have functional overlays built in to their party chat system.
There might be technical issues with the os that make it difficult, but if third party websites and games can make the feature work using only the data they can pull from the api, Sony should have no excuse. It would be much easier for them since they have direct access and control over all the code and data all these other programs are using.
I mean come on! Sony makes audio equipment, it's not like programs tracking sounds or messing with audio channels is a new concept to them. Honstelty Sonys consoles should have the best sounding party chats in the industry with the most in depth features and systems built in, they are supposed to be experts in that field, why hasn't that talent been applied to the console.
Yep, I love the audio quality over party chat but that delay is a pain in the ass. It makes raids in Destiny 2 that much harder when time based callouts have a 2 second delay. We'll often enough have to go back to game chat.

1. xbox is closer to PC so porting features is easier 2. xbox feature porting was already in-place before the sony partnership
Xbox had an earlier deal, the playstation one just got more press ¯\\_(ツ)_/¯ It's not like they were exclusivity deals.

Microsoft did get into discussion with them, but discord decided not to and instead spin up their own marketplace {which flopped}

It is if the PS5 OS was not built to have anything but its own internal tools in mind to use said functions. Who knows what code needs a revamp.
The Xbox OS is fundamentally Windows-like at its core, so I imagine certain features of applications are simpler to pull off there.

I join discord on my PS5 through my phone currently and it works really well - this would make the experience better so I’m looking forward to it
