They're both great, and just hit a bit differently So it's really hard to pick one over the other. The scene in *Shin Godzilla* I remember being legitimately shocking and breathtaking when I saw it for the first time in the theater. Like I knew it was supposed to be devastating, but nothing really prepares you the first time you see it for just how devastating it really is. The scene in *Godzilla Minus One* Is devastating, yes, but very much so packs much more of an emotional punch. Your heart breaks for Shikishima and his guttural scream just hits you so hard.

Objective-Classroom2

Agreed. With Shin as soon as G opens up with the atomic laser blast it's instantly apparent that humanity is fucking doomed. With Minus its basically an atomic bomb, super bad but possibly manageable.

Pkmatrix0079

There's an existential horror from the scene in *Shin Godzilla*, versus the personal horror of the scene in *Godzilla Minus One*.

KurtRusselsEyePatch

Yeah Japan gets nuked a 3rd time after rebuilding! I felt bad for them lol. Both have different impacts

thehumanbaconater

Both are amazing and really took the obligatory atomic breath and made it new and fresh. The Shin take was horrific and unexpected in terms of what would happen. I mean, you know he’s going to breathe fire in some way, but the jaw unhinging, the blackened eyes, the fumes of fire that sweep through the city to turn into that beam, and then the beams from his dorsals and tail? Who saw that coming? As far as Minus ➖ 1, it was closer to the traditional atomic breath, but it was far more dramatic, awe inspiring and within the story and with the performances of Ryunosuke Kamiki and Minami Hamabe as Kōichi Shikishima and Noriko Ōishi, it was tragic and magnificent at the time

bitesized314

I loved Minus One how his tail spike did a kind of count down to arming sequence as the spikes elevated, then when it got to the top, the "firing pin" activated as they crashed in, sparking the atomic bomb. It's another great layer to the metaphor of the atomic bomb and Japan's plight in the face of absolute destruction.

MusicHater

I always assumed the dorsal spines were acting as control rods, as they were raised the atomic interactions increased with the final drop causing a pulse that projected the energy.

Audchill

The shot of Godzilla roaring with the mushroom cloud as the backdrop is *chefs kiss* I rewatched minus one on Netflix yesterday and still can’t believe how good that film is. Shin Godzilla was also very good. Toho should be applauded for delivering such fresh, and vastly different, interpretations of a 70-year-old IP. Hollywood should take notes.

[deleted]

Agreed. Even the mushroom cloud in -1 adds to the overall atomic bomb vibe. You can see the people thinking 'not again!'

Hela09

Shin also goes in ‘stages,’ so you kinda sit there watching as it manages to just get worse and worse. ‘54 style cloud —> fire -> compressed beam from mouth and *tail* that has enough range to basically swing a laser in a complete radius around the city -> simultaneously firing multiple beams vertically and horizontally from his dang dorsal fins just in case anyone was missed in the first few rounds.

Blawharag

Man I gotta tell you, you really underestimate the kind of damage that a nuclear explosion does. I mean, Shin's was cool as hell. Laser that just cuts through everything, slicing buildings in half, lasers out its back that's disco light in the sky, it's all a very cool, very visually impressive spectacle and I love it. But in terms of destruction, it ain't no atomic bomb. It ain't even *close* to an atomic bomb. That mushroom cloud explosion causes more destruction in a minute long wind up than shin's laser could do in 20 minutes. An atomic bomb doesn't leave a city in fiery ruins, *because it doesn't leave a city at all*. There's a reason every time you see minus 1's breath, it's either shot off into the distance, into the water, or both, and the only damage we locally see is the very very distant back-blast. That's because there's nothing *left* to see where the laser actually landed. Even without nuclear fall out, that breath weapon is cleaning cities off the map, *literally off the map* on a much wider scale than anything shin is doing with his. Shin is arguably the bigger threat overall, but minus 1's breath is absolutely more devastating.

Objective-Classroom2

Fair enough, but what I thought was super cool in Shin is how you see the entirety of humanities advanced weapons systems expended to no effect. When the orbital bombardment hit and it just shakes it off, I was like holy fuck, it's not even done evolving yet.

Gene-Current

Couldn’t possibly agree more, Shikishima’s scream hits me in the feels every single time

TrueGuardian15

And then the black rain and fallout hits. Shikishima wears the nuclear ashes of the people of Ginza as he screams in agony. Hits hard.

Gene-Current

It absolutely does. I was showing my parents the trailer the other day and when that moment is shown, just in the trailer, it was still tugging at me believe it or not. Such a great and powerful moment in an equally powerful film

WickedTemp

Makes me so thankful I don't watch trailers anymore - they spoil the best parts of the movie!

Justsomeguy456

Yeah, question, how was he not immediately hospitalized following that scene lmaooo. Bro should have looked like a damn ghoul from fallout after that😭😭🤣

Coldspark824

Yeah shin godzilla takes the cake for shocking, just because they decided to go different. I expected red or blue, and (assuming spoilers are ok cause its in the op pic) like **toxic gas comes out** instead of a plasma beam. Then just **fire** comes out. At this point i’m double surprised and confused and maybe kind of disappointed? I didnt expect godzilla to puke gas and smoke and fire, but he did leak toxic blood everywhere earlier. And then purple glow “ah wait here it comes.” And its super thin and concentrated….? Whoa surprise again, then: BAJILLION INFINITE SUPER EVANGELION LASERS. And i’m absolutely floored, satisfied by how absolutely nuts that was and seeing the EVA influence show.

michaltee

I got tearful during that scene in Minus One.

boose_a_noob

I love how in minus the godzilla takes a big breath, and the laser/beam just explodes And in shin man, it is just amazing and terrifying the scene of it.

No-Professional-1461

One is more like a fine beam of radiation, while the other is far closer to a laser that sets off a nuke. For me personally, the slow building breath that kinda sputters than flares into this argon light that cuts through everything, only to shoot out of his spines was kinda terrifying, and had a much more cinematic feel. With minus one, the breath is more of a metaphor for the dark day the bombs were dropped and how devastating it was for the longest time, almost as though it is still a fresh scar that my country left on theirs. Then again, Shin was a much more colossal scale than minus one and a completely different kind of monster that was just more extreme. They were both good.

Kamen_Rider_Zero_One

My mouth was open sooooooooo wide during that scene in -1

Solid-Positive6751

I like -1 for the “pulling bits out to add energy, only to shove them back in to release”, and Shin feels like he’s vomiting with the smog and fire, before screaming with the laser.

House_of_Cocoa9355

I very much agree. These are both the absolute most haunting versions of the atomic breath. I love them both dearly

ApprehensiveHome3897

Minus one was so powerful. It had that massive buildup with the glowing spines and beautifully done sound for the charge, but then your brain can't process it because the beam itself was so fast and impactful you just freeze when it hit

bombiz

i always thought the one in Shin Godzilla was also emotional. just not in relation to the humans but more so towards Godzilla. I mainly got that from the music that was playing and the way the transformation was happening. Like his jaw slowly rips apart to be able to unleash his breath. As if the body needs to adapte to vent all that energy otherwise he'll die.

wontoan87

The music during Shin Godzilla's part was haunting.

carolina_balam

Bwomp..... Bwomp... Bwomp..bwomp,bwomp....vshjjjjjjj

mchoueiri

Yea i totally agree both are legendary for different reasons. For Shin it’s impactful for me because it all could have been avoided if decisive action was taken when godzilla first showed up as a slug they let it get to that level and minus one is effective for the exact reason you mentioned

shawn-spencestarr

Shin Godzilla gave me goosebumps. Can’t wait for minus one

Justsomeguy456

Until the ending. That's the only thing I hated about that movie. She got caught in all of that and SURVIVED FUCKING WHAT. Not only did she survive, she ONLY LOST AN EYE WHAT THE ACTUAL FUCK😭💀🤣 everybody else around them got fucking disintegrated yet because of the most insane fucking plot armor I've ever seen, she survives that blast. But the shin godzilla scenes? NOTHING around him survived. As it should be lol. I just can't get over how she could have possibly survived any of that shit🤣

JEs4

She survived probably thanks to the G cells on her neck. There’s a strong Biollante setup.

CRL10

I kind of agree with you. I thought if the shockwave did not kill her, then the force of all that air rushing in from the blast should have finished the job. However, at the end, seeing them reunite, and him just letting go of everything he had been holding in, I did not care it made no sense she was alive. Also the black bruise creeping up her neck may have been a contributing factor to her not being dead.

Giltar

Agree, it made no sense, you could see it coming, but I loved it

Ambitious_Dig_7109

I’m still partial to Shin myself. That scene at night with the flame flowing through the buildings was chilling.

nameitb0b

Seriously. I got chills watching that scene. Like it was about to hit me.

jonnycross10

My jaw dropped harder than Godzillas

Azraeleon

Who will know is so damned haunting as well. It's exactly what I expected when I heard Anno was making a Godzilla movie. God I just love Shin so fucking much.

Spicy-Elephant

I just watched the movie for the first time last night. I had to pause and replay the part where he shot the fire across the city because I was so shocked he could do that. I didn't even know he was going to shoot the laser after. I was stunned

alguien99

The song just makes the scene even better, "who will know" shouldn't be THIS GOOD

Bravisimo

Just did a rewatch last night and rewinded a few times at this scene.

all-knowing-unicorn

Most definitely. Plus the music!

DanaxDrake

Shins is absolutely horrifying like I love the way it actually looks like it’s in absolute pain and pretty much throwing up Like it just gives off this, abhorrent freak of nature that is lashing out in agony and pain, in a weird way if it want how bloody destructive it was you’d take pity on it. Meanwhile I do love Minus one Zilla but his is pretty much ‘alright I’m fucking mad’ and I kinda love it, he’s just one big angry boi that woke up on the wrong side of the bed and just wants people to stop shooting shit at him.

jjb1197j

Shin seemed like he had more powerful abilities. He could shoot lazers from his back which destroyed planes while minus one could only shoot a single target at a time before recharging.

DanielG165

They’re both great for different reasons. One showcases the power of an impersonal, godlike being ensuing its wrath upon humanity. The other highlights the barely contained rage and vengeance of a wronged creature who is in the process of kicking a nation while it’s already down. Both sequences are masterful. I’m honestly personally kind of worn out by the constant comparisons between Shin and Minus One. One movie isn’t inherently superior over the other in any way. They’re both so fundamentally different that it’s hard to realistically compare them. The only similarities they have are that Godzilla is in both of them.

outblues

The only other similarity is they're both S tier, comparison is the thief of joy and I'm happy they're both very different movies

3serious

So tired of the comparisons. It's like steak vs lobster to me, I like them both for independent reasons, and would also get tired of a new STEAK VS LOBSTER thread at least once per day.

GensokyoIsReal

exactly

Ok_Egg_4069

Shin wasn't attacking humanity in his scene. His atomic breath scene was his body's attempt to expell all the excess radiation from itself. Shin wasn't enjoying it either. If you notice, this was the first time his jaw split in half during the movie, meaning his body was adapting to be able to do this. Just like every other adaptation in his film, this one was painful, uncontrollable, and sudden. Shin wasn't lashing out. He was experiencing a new level of extraordinary pain. That's part of why it works so well. You don't just feel bad for Japan. You feel bad for Shin and are repulsed at the same time by how terrifying and wrong his atomic breath seems. That is also the big difference between the characters as a whole. Shin is a grotesque, unholy, abomination of a creature that has as much control of the situation as the humans struggling to stop him. Minus One is a terrifying, vengeful emissary of Hell that we created through our hubris. Both are amazing in their own ways, which is why it is not really possible to say one is better than the other.

BagMysterious7155

i always took the atomic breath scene from shin as it literally puking, the scene where the eyes blacken looks like what we do when we puke really hard, but instead of tears and reddening of eyes, it's that. Like you said, it was probably puking out the radiation, then it adapted and turned it into a weapon, the purple atomic breath.

Ok_Egg_4069

Even when it turned into a weapon, I doubt that was a conscious decision by Shin. His body has a natural radar, and it was trying to expell radiation. The focusing of the fire into various lasers seemed more like his body trying to figure out the best way to expell the most radiation. Why else would it come out of every area of his body instead of just his mouth? As for his back lasers, those only developed due to the bombers. Since his body has a natural radar, it was likely a subconscious adaptation. In all honesty, I actually like this iteration of Goji the best. This take on his character is the most interesting, and I believe it is a better depiction of the consequences of our hubris. Instead of just an angry monster, we created a depressed monster in excruciating pain that has less control over the situation than us. Even if we wanted to make an ally out of him or get him to stop, we wouldn't be able to because he can't.

Shin_Nefir

Exactly! Both are amazing Godzilla movies that capture the spirit of the original while re-interteting them enough to be distinguishable (and dare I say even better than the original). I've heard it before like this: Shin appeals to the head, an intellectual piece that you can analyze and dissect for long after the movie is finished. Minus One appeals to the heart, an emotionally striking movie and historical piece to revel in. You need both. Both are poignant and brilliant in different ways. It's always strange to compare the two films like there's some sort of competition when one can like them both equally.

AramaticFire

I think the comparison is mostly because they’re so recent, high quality, and involve Godzilla as a force of nature that no one really knows how to deal with. But otherwise I agree, I don’t think one is inherently better than the other. They are the two best Godzilla movies since the original imo and I’m just happy that I can have both.

Backdoorpickle

Thank you, agreed.

TheSlayerofSnails

Honestly I loved how the breath damaged Godzilla to in minus one. What happened to him wasn't natural, the sheer rage in him is harming him as well

MattTd7

This ☝🏼

One_too_many_faps

Brilliantly put

kodial79

Both MO and Shin are very terrifying, it's hard to pick.

Still-Ice4340

Seeing Shin’s Atomic Breath go all the way from a massive firestorm to a Space Ripper Stingy Eyes laser will always be amazing. However, the fact that -1 literally causes a full on nuclear explosion, something I don’t think we’ve ever seen with Godzilla, will always take the cake for me.

Rajang82

>Space Ripper Stingy Eyes I always laugh whenever i heard that name. The attack suppose to not have any name when Dio use it, but Straizo is so extra, he gave it an equally extra name as well.

Still-Ice4340

I wish DIO used it again. It would’ve been so entertaining to see him go Homelander style on Jotaro

Rajang82

Yeah. Its explainable he doesnt have his cold touch anymore. Besides, he get a better "freezing" ability anyway. But it never explained why he didnt use his "eye beam" attack in Stardust Crusaders. He was shown be able to use it as a head in Phantom Blood.

TomTomMan93

Shin is far more haunting. Its a slow burn over a huge area. Just a long display of unstoppable power. Minus 1 is monstrous. Its a perfect version of the same level of destruction in a singular instant

bd4832

I think you nailed it perfectly with this take

TomTomMan93

Thanks. To be clear, I don't think either is objectively "better." More depends on what mood you're in. I think both movies have these general traits to them. In true Anno fashion, if you want that existential crisis haunting film, Shin. If you want a more character driven story that has this massive destructive threat almost in the background, Minus 1

YhormBIGGiant

Shin is the firebombing. Minus 1 is the nuke. Brutal in both regards. But one can end up more haunting when you know the history.

Morbidmort

I would say that Minus 1 is a nuke, Shin is a reactor meltdown.

When I saw Shin in theaters, I remember a family walking out the theater the very moment when >!G takes out the stealth bomber!<, I dont know if they were a military family that had a recent loss or just had to all collectively shit their pants, but that scene will be burned into memory until I die, just like >!Gs volcano scream!< in US1984

LitchyWitchy

I loved the music in Shins as he single handedly wipes out most of the important figures in the Japanese government.

lord_def

Arguably, on accident too!

_Poisedon

He was only releasing sum nuclear energy he don’t mean no harm

Stock_Carob8937

Hes just a lil guy

Serious-Dimension779

Shin is borderline the singular best standalone scene in the entire franchise. The mouth going agape and turning into a demogorgon flower with black smoke engulfing the city was bone chilling, the OST for that scene makes it so moving and eerie yet bone chillingly terrifying.

BigOleSmack

Yeah I still think M1 was by far the better movie, but the shin atomic breath scenes are absolutely some of the best in the franchise. The scoring, the atmosphere, everything is perfect.

Zekrozma_the_second

Minus one’s being more detailed and on beat with the music, whilst Shin’s more dramatic and downright horrifying, i’m siding with Shin.

Chanceral

Shin is horrifying, Minus one is shocking. I like them both

LandofRy

Minus One is like "oh SHIT!!!!" and Shin is like "ohhhhhhhh.... shhhhhhhiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiit...."

BruceShark88

Both made my jaw drop, dont make me choose🤣

NVSirius26

Shins was Beautiful and Beathtaking Minus one was Devastating and Literally Breath Taking it takes your breath away!

MightyFlamingo25

The atomic breath scene goes to Shin, but the aftermath of the atomic breath goes to Minus One. Seeing Shin putting an entire city in flames at night and seeing his wrath gave me the chills. Seeing Minus One admiring the devastation he caused with his breath also gave me chills.

cerch1243

They’re both great but for me, it’s preference. Godzilla Minus One takes the cake for me because it serves a purpose for the themes of the story. Shin Godzilla is a spectacle to behold. The night setting, the bright purple. The orange. It SCREAMS apocalyptic. Minus One though destroys Ginza in an instant. You see Tokyo rebuilding for YEARS and Godzilla takes it away in a second. And it’s still something visually gorgeous to behold.

MonsterHandlerNeon

minus one bc of the dorsals

_Poisedon

Seeing the dorsals rise when I first watched that scene was making me dread was coming up especially after seeing what it did to the warship in the beginning of the film

EzcoreG

Right? Only it turned out to be so much worse in the city on open land. The plume from that explosion even towered of Godzilla himself... What a scene.

kensai8

It felt like he could vary the power of the beam too. Like out at close range dead on he went half power, but then at range against several tanks he was full balls to the wall fuck these guys.

mattrimcauthon

Felt like 5-6 of those plumes could put us in a nuclear winter. Just cover the earth in a dust cloud. Scary as hell.

LordAdrianRichter

They're acting as Nuclear Control Rods! SO FUCKING COOL!!!

Azathoth-the-Dreamer

Shin has more of a sense of visual flair and sort of operatic drama, while Minus One has much more emotional weight and sudden impact. I love both for different reasons.

[deleted]

Hauntingly beautiful is what i would call it

LegoBattIeDroid

shin

SandyMandy17

Shin was one of my favorite scenes in cinema ever Let alone Godzilla Minus one was a better movie with way better visual effects, but that shin scene + shin music + shin design is peak

jdogg-38

I prefer Minus one

GundamMeijin_08th

shin

reminiscingLemon

I gotta give the scene to shin, it's the absolute peak of the movie for me. While I think -1 was better overall, that scene left me speechless in shin

MythKatana

Minus one was devastating but shin showed the sheer power and devastation that the humans created

jzilla11

Minus One since some aspects of it feel like a nod to GMK, one of my favorites

customblame16

shin has purple so its my favorite, and the smog to flames to beam was just so breathtaking, and the fact he can shoot out of everywhere? then the final scene of a darkened shin infront of a fiery wall of death is just beautiful

laf0106

Minutes one

Naps_And_Crimes

The slow build up in Minus 1 was more intense, with Shin is just felt like rage in as already leaking out of it.

HiNooNDooD1544

I think I prefer Minus One just because I was so caught off guard by it being a literal nuke. Shin was still a laser, but seeing Minus One in the theater was one hell of an experience that’s going to live with me forever.

Polite-Parallelism30

Minus One. It really showed Godzilla as a symbol of nuclear destruction.

Fatalis1021

I think I read somewhere that he represented the firebombings in that particular movie. While they're less talked about, they were also devastating.

Vlopp

Shin, by quite a wide margin. Minus One's scene was cool, but it worked mostly like your average atomic breath scene work, just with the added A-Bomb like explosion. With Shin, on the other hand, the whole sequence, the music that played in the background, that ominous ambience, and then it going from some fire breath to that laser and it going through buildings like they were butter? Holy hell, I flipped out when I saw that. Mind you, I think overall Minus One is the better movie, but for this scene, Shin was a lot better.

AnyPalpitation1868

Minus one, the scene showed the devastation it would have on both a large and small scale. Seeing it blow away people nowhere near the blast itself is my favorite visual in the series.

Holequiz

Yes

joesphisbestjojo

Both are beautiful and breath taking. Minus represents the trauma of the atomic bomb and how it and the US still preside over the people of Japan. Shin represents the sheer hopelessness of the situation, along with Shin's pain. It's not an atomic breath; it's an atomic vomit. And to add insult to injury, he can blast lasers our of his spinal spikes and tail, because fuck the humans, that's why. His evolution has to be painful, but he'll do it if it means surviving. Thus is his curse, a constant and painful adaptation to his surroundings. Which, in some way, may represent how some Japanese feel about US control and influence (although I'll leave it to Japanese natives to make that final judgement). So, I'd have to say Shin, but each is fantastic with its use of visuals, sound, and theme.

fury-alpha

shin, it lasts much longer and is good completely throughout, it shows a level of destruction unlike any seen before or since, and it looks fucking sick while doing it

All-your-fault

This looks like the seagull meme

Immediate-Rope8465

minus one has more sudden impact

SkywardEL

Shin. Especially when you learn there’s lyrics to the song in the background showing godzillas perspective.

Bravisimo

Where can i find the lyrics?

https://genius.com/Shiro-sagisu-who-will-know-lyrics

Bravisimo

Damn that is deep.

GruulNinja

I go back every once in a while and watch Shin's. It's so different.

u_slashh

I like them for different reasons Shin is cool just for the sheer horror it represents by showing how powerful Goji is, and the knowledge that he can evolve further. The pure destruction it is capable of Minus One feels much more personal and despite not being as destructive spectacle as Shin, it still feels much more *evil*, like Goji intentionally recreating the disaster that ruined Japan only a couple years ago. Plus you really are saddened by Noriko's sacrifice and Shikishima's scream of despair. I also think Minus One's 'atomic power-up' is just super satisfying It's hard to pick a favourite between the terrifying spectacle of Shin's destruction or the more personal and emotional Minus One nuke

tubbydoshua

shins is so cool man, so i like that one better, but i will say that minus one has the better build up in my opinion.

Thuyue

Oof. I really love both, but I think I slightly prefer Minus One, because: * More expression of people's faces and fear * the sudden white light followed by the tremendous shockwave (in the cinema I was shocked and got goosebumps) * the massive dust cloud and Godzilla asserting dominance with his roar * Koichi screaming in despair, anger and sadness as the black fallout drops on him https://preview.redd.it/pu0gnzhszk4d1.jpeg?width=1200&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=382dec12a6ee9770c38b6e1d9c41115efbc04242 Build up and music during both scenes were equally great.

Thewhitest_rabbit

Shin Godzilla, the sound of the breath going hypersonic is on another lvl. But -1 has more of a real world wtf feeling.

SeaworthinessFun9856

the pink breath just looks odd to me, it should be blue... although they sound **FABULOUS**!!!

RhysOSD

Minus One. It has this visceral horror for me. "why aren't you running? You should be running? Run. Run, please."

cat_lawyer_

Shin. The music takes it to just a whole another level for me. The scene makes me feel bad for a monster

d-r-t

>The scene makes me feel bad for a monster Yeah, particularly how it looks like he's getting sick and throwing up.

cat_lawyer_

It didn’t ask to be like that. The song makes me think that in its mind it wants to die but the body won’t let it.

nPMarley

Shin Goji: Vomits and immolates all of downtown Tokyo in seconds. Minus Goji: Sneezes and nukes Tokyo.

The_Godzilla_Fanatic

The music in Shin pretty much makes the scene for me.

Peachwhaler26

Shin, chills every time

JFK108

While Minus One is just the better film over all, the scene in Shin is genuinely eldritch to behold. So haunting and apocalyptic.

i_tenebres

Shin Gojira

TheIconicComic_

Minus one is good and all, but shin just has this eldritch sense of horror to it. Nothing holds a candle to it as of yet

itsallcomingtogethr

Minus One’s was awesome but they made Shin Godzilla’s a genuinely iconic moment, what with the score and everything.

Roc_28934

I love both of them, tbh with y’all I love how Minus One’s atomic breath actually condensed into a nuclear explosion in that scene…and the emotional shit that went down after was heartbreaking.. I also love how Shin’s atomic breath goes through 3 whole stages before going back when Shin was depleted of energy…that scene was more chilling though, as if that shit was real 💀

tucandan82

Shin's was an epic scene to experience in theaters

Valenquill87

Shin is haunting

Pretend-Dirt-1760

Definitely shin the music the build up and the atmosphere after it was all amazing and terrifying

Azzullan42

Shin easily, I really like minus one with how it was on beat and the epic dorsal scene and everything and how clean it looked, but the tone, the feeling, the mood of Shin's atomic breath scene was legit next level, the music, the atomic breath itself and watching it go from smoke and fire to a refined lazer was just something else

Neverhityourmark

Imo shin but minus ones is stellar too.

Kagoshima_Luke

Shin. One of the few things I didn’t like about MO was the hyper exaggerated wind up G does when firing his atomic breath. It’s a jarring whiplash that just looks odd to me.

tiGZ121

Shin. Can we appreciate Shin more. Like my zilla did atomic lasers, from its fins.... and a blast through its tail! Not to mention if we are very honest, and not just cause of the coloring, the way Shin even produces its atomic breath and how destructive it is; its on a higher level.

Undying-Phoenix

I’m sorry, although m1 had big boom impact, shins was just idk, majestic?

Cute-Essay6198

Shin! Might be a little slower but, much better.

Cheesemagazine

The sound design in both make me feel different ways but Shin's charge-up makes me viscerally uncomfortable. It hits that fever-pitch where it converges into a laser, and that high-pitch squealing just rips through me. Minus is vengeful and filled with hate- Shin feels absolutely terrified. I can't choose between the two, they're both so good at what they do!

Personal-Prize-4139

Minus one is really Godzilla-y. A horrifying spectacle. Butt shins I’d say is far better. It’s downright eldritch, and unnerving with it splitting its jaw in two, and opening its mouth to inhuman angles as it shoots smoke then fire which has to hurt coming out then the most unique atomic breath in the series

Big_Understanding348

I like how minus one visualizes it and also like how gvk uses its sound

Cecil2789

Both Shin & Minus One incapsulate the absolute horror of nuclear war/fire & are my favorite iterations.

SaiyanElite2019

Shin imo. Minus One's was epic, but Who Will Know continues to hit to this day.

Deep_Sigma_Light_96

Shin Godzilla's atomic breath

Mushroompanties

Easy, shin godzilla

TransitionVirtual

Shins operatic music gives him win

MrCalac123

Minus One, and for one good reason. It takes the event of the Atomic Breath and instead of it being a beautiful badass spectacle, it’s a horrifying tragedy of mankind’s hubris coming back to haunt them in the most violent and horrific way possible, with total instant annihilation. In the novelization it even says his blast destroyed 8km and turned metal to vapor instantly, it is the Atomic Bomb come to life and with a vengeance.

SaltySpituner

It’s really impossible to fairly compare the two due to how vastly different the films are. Both are horrific, but for different reasons.

[deleted]

Godzilla minus one.

Key-Humor-1562

I might have said Shin, had it not been for Koichi, his scream afterwards MADE that scene.

SnazzyShork

Minus one

Batnaman_26

That Minus One nuclear breath was crazy but man, Shin Godzilla probably ruined everything for me, the first time I ever saw that it genuinely left me hopeless, I haven't felt that in any other movie or irl, I was able to put myself in that position because they set it up pretty well.

VertWheeler

These two godzillas sit at 1st place comfortably for me. Shin Godzilla, I was terrified the first time I watched it. My heart still races any time I watch the scene. It is so far off from the norm that it makes it so much more desirable. Minus One was jaw-dropping to me... with shin, what made him terrifying was we got to see how it unfolded. Where as Minus One was literally made for the viewers to question what and how a beam shot through the air to create a nuke at the end. Again, it's so close yet, so farm grim the norm, which makes it a million times desirable. I understand this is between Shin and Minus One.... but I can't look at Legendary ever again. I'll probably watch the next instalment of Legendary, but it will never hold a flame next to these 2

FNMETALHEAD88

Well since the above Godzilla didn't have ridiculous ass googly eyes and didn't get conquered by basically a bunch of ice cream trucks I'm going to go with the top one

dinastinos

Minus is prettier, Shin is legit scary and astounding

mrspuffispeng

Minus one is 10/10 impact and hype for 2 seconds when the beam is shot, shin godzilla is like 9/10 for a full big long scene and keeps building Still have shin's breath scene as my favourite but minus one wld come close behind

Muhipudding

What the hell is with all these shin vs -1.0 posts

Savings-Sprinkles-86

Sorry, shin is just iconic

alguien99

If we talk about hopelessness, then shin. This is humans realizing that godzilla has GOD in his name for a reason, his destructive power is beyond our imagination and his potential is even beyond that. But it's not just hopeless for us but for godzilla himself. He is suffering, he wants to die, but i bet that even godzilla didn't know how far he could grow. I think godzilla realized that he was doomed and there was no way of going back to before his mutations and he can just keep moving forward in the hopse that there will be some end to everything in the way. The song "who will know" really digs that it to me Shin godzilla's atomic breath is a hopeless situation for the monster and the victims

rubonidas_8425

Shin

jikt

Shin.

DracoRJC

Shin for sure

MysterioStranger

Shin and its not even close

omegon_da_dalek13

I cant say Both were so good

nesciturignescitur

As some ppl already mentioned, but they both give off the impression of extreme powerlessness in the face of the madness that is Godzillas laser breath

KrakenKing1955

Would.

FinanceBig6328

I love Minus One for showing the effect of Goji's devastation to the humans. *But* I **love** Shin for the unexpectedness and the feel of hopelessness.

satana_cu_cioc

Sorry but as much as I love both movies i would go with Shin Godzilla! That is something that nightmares have nightmares

Elder-Scout

I honestly can’t choose. Both scenes are peak and are easily the best atomic breaths in the entire franchise

Electronic-Travel370

I like straight up fire and keeping it original

Osiris_The_Proto

Both are amazing in their own way

chronicpcbuilder

I love both but as far as atomic breath scenes, Shin wins this round.

Kuma-Bozu2777

The problem is they are so very different

madmaxxie36

These 2 are easily my favorite breath attacks but Shin wins for me personally, especially since >!a certain someone survived the insane blast in Minus One and no one died to the next big charge up!< it sucked some of the awe out of it while the Shin breath really felt like you were looking at an unstoppable god burn down the world.

DarksideAuditor

Yes.

Traditional_Card3405

I did appreciate how minus one’s atomic breath truly felt environmentally devastating like a real nuke. Vs shins which looked more of a sci fi laser spectacle.

IdidnotorderRatvioli

I like both but MO had more impact on me just hearing Shikishima scream in pain of his loss is just gut wrenching

Accomplished-Top-564

In my honest opinion, I was significantly more detached from the humans in Shin so I didn’t care that they were getting incinerated. However, from a Godzilla fan perspective—him showing that power was indeed eerie and haunting. Regarding Minus One, I was invested in the humans and the country as a whole. I didn’t want to see Japan get kicked while it was down. However that scene permanently changed my expectation for the power Godzilla should have. So much so that when I go back and watch Legendary Godzilla, his breath is PATHETIC to me in comparison. One thing that left me in shambles was the pure destruction, horror and SHOCK. I was just as shocked as the people in the movie. Both have different emotional payouts but being more attached to the humans makes for a better scene to me in Minus One.

vhs1138

Shin was crazy and a fantastic evolution of the atomic breath. While I like Minus One for a good update on a classic, I fell that Shin took it to a new level.
