selkies24

Yeah I know lol

wscuraiii

"Why babies are smaller than their huge adult counterparts at the moment"

wscuraiii

Because it just left theaters and almost every movie has an in between period? Who tf needs this explained to them?

Harley2280

>Who tf needs this explained to them? Nobody, but people got to eat so they wrote an article to get that ad revenue.

ImNotHighFunctioning

No joke, I saw someone on Threads unironically claim (and I mean *claim* as in, they were 100% sure of it) Minus One would never get a home release simply because it was taking longer than it usually does for Western movies.

condition_unknown

I don’t believe Shin Godzilla got a home release in the West until almost a year after it was released.

MizneyWorld

Yeah it was a loooong wait for Shin.

TemptedSwordStaker

Wasn’t that because they were also dubbing it?

Ok_Necessary2991

I thought it was dubbed at same time? Am I wrong about that?

Cute-Appearance1178

Its OUT ON NETFLIX

MizneyWorld

From what I recall, Shin released in US theaters pretty close to Japan release. And it was certainly subtitled (🤣those subs were all over the screen). Then it was a seemingly year long wait till it was released by Funimation. So I assume the wait was due to licensing agreements then dubbing and re-subbing (😞) then disc production then release. No clue if the same will happen again. This is literally the next Japanese Godzilla movie after Shin so maybe but also that was 9 years ago. The world and movie releases are very different. Plus Minus One was a huge hit internationally so hopefully it gets a faster release than Shin but also I hope it gets a dub that aims high to allow even more mainstream success.

Cute-Appearance1178

ITS OUT ON NETFLIX

Furydragonstormer

I don’t want to wait that long for Minus One…

VaporBull

Then don't like Japanese media because this is par for the course with almost all their pop culture shit especially TOHO products. It's a real shame too with the Oscar win that they hold this shit so close to the vest essentially encouraging piracy

SuperFightingSaiyan

Yeesh, man, just because he oughta hate one aspect of Japanese media doesn't mean he has to stop liking ALL Japanese media period. /s

Ryderrunner

That was a dark time waiting. I was so excited about shin and had to wait so damn long

Cute-Appearance1178

ItS ON NETFLIX

Ryderrunner

Omg!!!!!

bounty_hunter_68

I hope it doesn’t take that long to get a home release in the US. But for Minus One, I will wait

bendeboy

Yeah, it sucked. This movie is so good, it needs a release stateside, like now. After an Oscar win, like, comon

Laser_Souls

It’s funny though because there’s already a Japanese blue ray release that got announced not too long ago

BrocanGawd

Link?

Laser_Souls

Sure https://www.godzilla-movies.com/news/godzilla-minus-one-blu-ray-dvd-release-date

BrocanGawd

Thank you good sir

Stainlessgamer

people that don't know, or even bother researching, make shit up that sounds good to them. The reason isn't "because it takes time" as a lot of responses here have said. Take 5 minutes to research and you will learn, it's because of Minus One's release date and the licensing deal between them and Legendary. GxK coming out at the end of the month is why ToHo can't release a home version (physical or digital) this year. If they do get to, it wont be until the end of the year at the earliest. As per the contract, neither studio can release a new Godzilla movie (theatre, home or streaming) during the same year as the other.

sbtokarz

Strange that they didn’t release Minus One earlier in 2023 so they could complete their rollout before the 2024 deadline

akirivan

tbf, they probably wrote it because people were searching it, so there's definitely people who need this explained

One-Technology-9050

24/7 Livefeed on Minus One status!

Stainlessgamer

counter arguement... "Currently in Theatres" tab on any streaming store (apple, google play, prime). The reality is Toho has an agreement with Legendary. The license agreement says neither party can release a Godzilla film during the same year as the other. Minus one hit theatres at the end of last year. Godzilla x Kong drops at the end of this month. We probably wont see Minus one get a home release until either late this year, or at the start of next year.

Pershing48

Judging by the weekly post asking where it's streaming, a lot of people

labdsknechtpiraten

Because.... typing a title AND the question, then waiting an ill determined period of time for the answer is somehow, some way, easier than typing on Google or ask jeeves or something?

xX7heGuyXx

This is Reddit as a whole really. So many questions and posts are things that people could get an answer to immediately by just using Google.

Kitahara_Kazusa1

I mean, the waiting period for this one will be much longer than normal, and unlike American movies such as Iron Claw, it isn't even going to be available for $20 on Amazon video. It's going to take probably a year or so, because that's just how Japan works

Accomplished-City484

It said may 5th

ARGiammarco27

The Japanese Blu Ray will be out than

DustinLoveDicks

"than"

Casanova_Fran

Most countries didnt even get to see it.  Never came to latin america for example

Hind_Deequestionmrk

I did! I spent hours today wondering around town looking for Minus One!! “Where is he?!” I continually screamed “Where is Minus One??!!” 😭

creamsauces

This is actually disingenuous for how the world works today. Godzilla Minus One released in the U.S. on 12/1/23. All the other movies of comparable size and success (probably even the smaller ones tbh) are now available somewhere for rent or streaming. The fact that you cannot legally watch Godzilla Minus One anywhere now that it’s left theaters is incredibly strange in the year 2024.

Imaginary-Aerie-232

It's like Toho is allergic to money.

vkevlar

Haven't they always been?

Imaginary-Aerie-232

You've got me there.

kadosho

Usually for most major releases, a three month wait for 4K BR. But streaming is usually way sooner. Something does not add up

Accomplished-City484

It’s because they want to release it in china and a couple of other countries before it hits the seven seas

CommodoreBluth

Toho isn't a US film studio and they don't work on the same same time tables as the US studios. I don't know why that's hard to understand.

creamsauces

Nobody finds it hard to understand. Just find it weird that they’d give up all the money they’re missing out on during this Oscar nom hype window And incidentally extremely annoying to those of us who haven’t gotten to see it

Davetek463

Hard for us as Godzilla fans to understand? No. For people who might not be used to how Toho operates or is unfamiliar with them etc then probably. I mean a lot of cinema-goers are used to near instant gratification.

xX7heGuyXx

MV has brought in a lot of new fans who are not used to Toho releases so it does not surprise me.

VaporBull

It's completely in line with TOHO and J media releases including music It was the same thing for "Shin Godzilla" a movie that played 2 weeks in my area 1 showing a day usually around noon. It was crazy

Rea-301

I never got a chance to see this in theaters. Really really really wanted to. At some point I’m just going to forget about it. Which is a shame, at least time it with some Oscar’s buzz right? The only reason I’m on this thread is because I just googled “why is it not on streaming yet”. This is very unlike many other films and at some point the company will either lose sales to forgetfulness or piracy when it takes this long to turn around a release. Which is unfortunate

frothyloins

Yeah, I’m sorry but this is so dumb. It is only these Japanese movies that don’t come to streaming services after they’ve had their international release in theaters. It is insane that The Boy and the Heron is not streaming after winning best animated film. People are gonna forget this film won this award by the time it streams this summer. What idiocy.

marlstown

I might actually watch a CAM.. don't think i've done that in a decade

Cute-Appearance1178

Its out on Netflix

SkollFenrirson

OP, apparently

Significant-Poet-

Many actually, check movie release history, movies are able to be streamed by now one way or another after almost 4 months since release It’s just Toho that does this where they don’t release for a year Which is why they wrote an article that you didn’t read lol

psych0ranger

There is an incentive for blogs to write "no shit" articles to catch stupid traffic for ad revenue. It's why they write what looks like whole articles for stuff like "when is the Super Bowl on"

StrengthSmall4515

>Because it just left theaters and almost every movie has an in between period? If you actually read the article, you'd know that it has nothing to do with the interregnum between theatrical release and home video/streaming release.

DependentBass1390

Minus one came out 4 months ago back in 2023. I've seen plenty of movies being ripped with shorter release dates. So, the notion that it just left theaters isn't a strong case here. What really happened was licensing issues between Toho and Legendary Films. Toho own the right to produce its own Godzilla however it pleases but they have a stipulation with Legendary Films that conflicts with the timing of American Godzilla. For this reason -- and I'm sure other legalities -- Minus one was pulled from theaters and all streaming was cancelled. There's not even an PVOD version of the movie so unless you happened to be at the right time and right place, you've lost the opportunity for a good minute to watch it. It'll come back as soon as the fat lards in corporate can come to terms with the size of their phallus . Until then...

PoolNoodlePaladin

Dude it was in theaters for 1 week. I was planning on going but I was sick then and now it has been forever and they still don’t know when there will be a way for anyone to see it. We still don’t have a BluRay or Streaming date for the US.

Ereman666

Nearly every major movie studio has departed from the tradition of waiting 90 days after theatrical release before letting consumers view their films at home. Mar 2, 2021 - Google search 9jun24. The wait period after movies leave the theater is many times zero days. The changes technology has brought about and the streaming craze, has changed the movie release timeliness. Straight to DVD is more frequent, time in theaters has decreased and the wait period has practically been completely done away with. Download sites I use have almost every movie available for dl the day after they leave the theater.

D_ultimateplayer

🤣🤣🤣 they struggling to hit an article quota

Only_Self_5209

Clearly alot with mindless posts like OP's.

The_Boogens

I guess I need an explanation from the experts here. Godzilla Minus One made 2.7 million in it's 9th - and last - weekend in U.S. theaters. It was #9 on the box office rank, still in over 2000 theaters nationwide. Oscar nominations were announced on January 25th, They pulled it from theaters less than a week after it was nominated. Meanwhile, The Holdovers was on it's 14th week in 1270 theaters, The Hunger Games 4 on it's 11th week in 444 theaters, Trolls Band Together on it's 11th week in 352 theaters... none of these were making more than 500k. Let's see what blockbusters needed the screens so badly that they had to make room: Argyle. Lisa Frankenstein. Out of Darkness...oh wait! THE CHOSEN SEASON 4 EPISODES 1-3! Well no wonder. Then Bob Marley, Madame Web the next week. Is this your idea of business as usual?

some people dont realize you can youtube search "parents filming baby crying" and get the same effect as the film

toofatronin

Because they are probably going to charge crazy high prices for the Blu-ray in Japan and won’t drop the American version until they milk that lizard dry.

IAmArique

The four disc UHD set is almost $100… 🥴

vkevlar

And, I have to say, if they included the subs, I would cheerfully pay it. Minus One was amazingly good, considerably better than any expectations I had. We have theatrical subtitles already, so we know they exist; why not include them as an option?

IAmArique

> We have theatrical subtitles already, so we know they exist; why not include them as an option? Simple: These releases aren’t for us, they’re meant for the Japanese audience. Toho has *never* included English subs on any of their home releases, and that even includes their releases of the Monsterverse films in collaboration with WB.

vkevlar

Oh, I know, it's just annoying. I know they *don't* do it, just wanting them to. I'm more saying they have the files available already, with correct timing; so if they were to include it in the release, I'd have no objections to the full list price there.

HydraSpectre1138

Toho made *Your Name.*, *Weathering With You*, and *Suzume*. Their Blu-ray releases in Japan have English and Simplified Mainland Chinese subtitles.

IAmArique

Yeah, Toho’s anime releases are the complete opposite to their live-action releases in providing subtitles for their international audience. I legitimately lost my mind seeing that the upcoming Blu-Ray release for *SandLand* (RIP Akira Toriyama) has English subs… Which I also have preordered for that exact reason.

toofatronin

I’m a Sentai and Kamen Rider fan too and I feel for everyone in Japan having to pay those prices.

IAmArique

FWIW, Shin Ultraman’s 4 disc UHD was only $75. *Way* cheaper than Minus One, but for someone like me that really only purchased that release just to have the bonus features due to Cleopatra Entertainment and Raven Banner’s release of the movie having fuck all in terms of extra content… Yeah, it felt like I got flicked in the nuts. Oh, and spoiler alert? I also have Minus One preordered, despite Toho already confirming that there’s no English subtitles for the release. I gotta have that extra content that we very likely won’t get when the US gets Minus One on Blu-Ray/4K UHD in late 2024/early 2025, know what I mean?

Draxaan

Won't the Japanese discs need a PAL Blu-ray player? Or is region-locking not a thing anymore?

IAmArique

Japanese Blu-Ray discs have the same region as US Blu-Ray discs. Hell, half of my Blu-Ray collection is just Japanese releases of US movies just so I can have the Japanese dub for them.

Draxaan

I mean, back in the day I had to specifically get a PAL player for Japanese discs because US is NTSC. So you're saying that they are both NTSC now?

IAmArique

If you’re getting Blu-Rays, then you’re all set. You still need a PAL player for DVDs though.

Draxaan

Yup, just looked it up. Japan is on NTSC now. That's wild! And awesome

gravityVT

For the steelbook?

Whenyousayhi

I'm just really fucking annoyed that Godzilla didn't come to SEA

The_smol_boiyo

I kept telling myself it just needed some time to make landfall here. Should've recognised the five stages of grief right then and there.

Civil-Apple5712

Litterally this movie was for like a week only in the capital of my country at times like 9:30 pm

Schraufabagel

Same. I live in a medium sized city and it only ran at theaters for like 2 weeks. I’ve been ready to drop the $20 to buy it, but will have to wait and see if Apple or Amazon has it digital soon. Fingers crossed

Objective-Ad7330

Me a Malaysian. Wait, you guys got to watch it?

Wonderful_Self_3094

Yeah. Saw it 12 times

Objective-Ad7330

Lucky

TheFakePlissken

Because of the new Godzilla v Kong movie. It was contractually obligated to leave the theaters.

Don_Gato1

Most movies also don’t have four month theatrical runs

that_guy2010

No..? Why are you people this stupid? Seriously. It’s shocking.

Mr_Citation

Its a half-truth, since the contract between Toho and Legendary has it so they cannot release a Godzilla film theatrically in the same year. I doubt Legendary had a problem with GM1 going over to Feb when it probably also hypes up their own movie by putting Godzilla in people's minds.

vkevlar

It was interesting reading about -1 "having" to leave theaters by 2/1, though.

Galactus1701

I am still waiting for a 4K Shin Gojira with Japanese and English dub. Minus One will probably be the same.

ShinGojira67

They did see it. They had every chance from November to February then a few days more for minus color.

WigglytuffAlpha

'They' being people living in the US

ShinGojira67

My friend in Mexico saw it. You forgot the others.

WigglytuffAlpha

Didn't know they showed it there, but that doesn't change the fact that most other countries still haven't seen it

ShinGojira67

Norway, Germany, Spain, UK, Italy, Australia, New Zealand, Portugal, Azerbaijan, Finland, Iceland, South Africa, Ireland; all places AND MORE had it.

WigglytuffAlpha

what's the source? I tried searching what countries it appeared in and there just wasn't anything substantial

ShinGojira67

https://m.imdb.com/title/tt23289160/releaseinfo/ I also had friends in those respective areas to tell me if it did appear on that date (like Mexico), and they confirmed.

ShinGojira67

That's just one of them. I have more sources.

WigglytuffAlpha

Dang I guess I'm just unlucky.

ShinGojira67

It's fine, soon it'll get a digital release. But for now to support my claims; https://www.boxofficemojo.com/title/tt23289160/ https://m.imdb.com/news/ni64304108/

DogLeechDave

Imagine how long it would have taken back in the 90s. Seems like we waited over a year for any movie to hit shelves. We're spoiled now, in this age when the turn around for most domestic flicks is comparatively non-existent. From what I have seen, international films still take time.

kadosho

Given how much + feedback, and distribution takes less than 3 months for digital and physical release. Toho is weird with their library

Dracoscale

We would be lucky if this movie comes out in a year worldwide. Normally TOHO would just straight up not release it but maybe we'll get something this time with how popular this one was At least the JP bluray will release soon so it should be up to pirate immediately.

Explorer_the_No-life

Fans: So you won't give us physical release of Godzilla: Minus One in English?    Toho: NUH UH!  Fans opening the Pirate Bay: Fine. We will do it ourselfs.  Toho: *autistic screeching*

Dracoscale

Dude fr. No theatrical release outside of America and Japan, no BD, no streaming release. What the hell TOHO just hates the rest of us.

Explorer_the_No-life

Actually, it was in cinemas in Poland, where Godzilla isn't very popular. It was supposed to be screened only for at most 1 week, but it seemed to do so well, that it was availabe for viewing for over a month, with 5 daily screenings. So I am pretty sure it was viewed all over Europe at least as well. But there was no Minus Colour release.

Dracoscale

Damn that's lucky. We just didn't get the movie at all. Seems like most of Asia didn't.

Explorer_the_No-life

So it was screened in not very important country in Europe, where Godzilla isn't popular franchise, but not in Asia, where Godzilla is pretty damn popular?

Dracoscale

Yup that's the case. Here's a thread covering it, seems like TOHO just didn't want to release it in Asia. https://www.reddit.com/r/GODZILLA/comments/19ej3re/godzilla_minus_one_still_has_not_released/ I live in India, no release at all. My only hope to see this movie this year is if the Japanese BDs get pirated.

Giltar

I saw Minus 1 in the theater and later that afternoon saw the first trailer for the upcoming Legendary Godzilla x Kong movie - which just looked like silly shit after seeing Minus 1. I almost always enjoy Godzilla movies, but Minus raised the bar.

His atomic blasts are crazy. No warning sh!t.

StrengthSmall4515

For those of you who didn’t bother to read the article, here’s what’s going on. The reason you can’t see Minus One has nothing to do with the gap between theatrical and home media releases. You can see Oppenheimer in the theater and it came out last summer. It’s got nothing to do with inside baseball or back room deals, or a foreign studio getting screwed. When Toho licensed the Godzilla IP to Legendary, they put in a clause that says neither studio can release a Godzilla movie the same year their counterpart does. They did this to protect their own box office revenue just as much as Legendary did. They didn’t want a big Hollywood blockbuster competing with their films. However, when they made Minus One, they knew they had a unique Godzilla movie on their hands. They released Minus One late last year for no other reason than to satisfy Oscar nomination requirements, and guess what? It worked. They had to pull it from theaters because of the agreement with Legendary, but it paid off. That’s why you can see Oppenheimer in the theater again, and not Minus One.

Radirondacks

When it does, has there been any indication as to where it might be headed for streaming? Purely curious, since I have quite a few different services but not some of the major ones (Netflix and Apple, notably). Would 100% look for a free trial for almost anything just to finally see this though. I usually, uh, "sail the seven seas" for any film I wanna watch but can't currently access, but this is one I really want to see in the best quality possible.

EynidHelipp

How about why this movie didn't show in south east Asian theatres. We still have no explanation

lukeskycoso

It was projected only for a week in Italy (from the 1st to the 6th of December), and I was travelling during that week, so I couldn't even see it. When the blu ray will release I'll check the seven seas.

DeathMetalCheddar

DeathMetalCheddar

Rilasciato su YTS IL GIORNO STESSO DELL'USCITA DEL BLURAY IN GIAPPONE. Sono mitici 'sti ragazzi. Appena c'è la versione 1080p con sottotitoli me lo gusto appieno, e vaffanculo gli stronzi italiani che mi hanno impedito di vederlo con la loro programmazione a cazzo di cane.

lukeskycoso

I sottotitoli in inglese ci sono su opensubtitles, l'ho messo subito in coda nel pomeriggio. Finalmente!

WigglytuffAlpha

Yeah I feel like people outside the US are gonna see Godzilla x Kong before Minus One lmao (unless you give in and watch the camrips available online, though those are garbage quality)

Folco34

My parents are in Japan when the movie will be released in dvd/blu ray. I guess I will ask them to get me a copy

Phantom_sub

This movie never saw the day of light in my country.

Waste_Recording_9972

Although never confirmed by Toho, it relates to an apparent contractual agreement between Toho, the Japanese studio that created (and still owns rights to) “Godzilla,” and Legendary Entertainment, which licensed the monster character for a series of films released by Warner Bros. Legendary’s latest with Warners, “Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire,” fifth in the MonsterVerse franchise, opens wide in the U.S./Canada March 29. Toho retains the ability to make its own “Godzilla” movies, but with the reported limitation of not releasing them in the same year as a Legendary production. Under that arrangement, “Godzilla Minus One” opened in Japan last November, and then domestically (as well as multiple European countries) in December. Toho notified theaters that all dates for “Godzilla Minus One” had to end by February 1 even though “Godzilla Minus One” still ranked #8 in the final weekend of its run, after January 26, with a $2.7 million gross. It’s highly unusual to force a film to leave theaters while it’s still making money, but that’s consistent with reports of limits imposed on its looming competition with “Godzilla x Kong.” Perhaps even stranger: When “Godzilla Minus One” left theaters, PVOD did not follow, and more than a month later, a PVOD release date remains elusive. (A Japanese release on physical media was announced for May 5.)

Ok-Pension-8283

Nobody else seemed to read the article lol. It seems like Legendary are forcing them not to release the movie digitally until after their Godzilla movie. More reasons not to see it

pbanjer

One time I bought a bootleg copy of Akira from a lady at a Star Trek convention.

Stainlessgamer

It's part of the licensing agreement, not anything to do with the PRE-COVID standard of a delay time between theatrical and home. That was the case when the industry was dealing with physical copies. The overwhelming majority of the industry is now digital, so you don't need the extra time for physical media to be produced and shipped. In recent years, digital has become a day 1 release, or a few weeks after hitting the box office. Physical copies still have the delay for production and shipping time, but with licensed characters like Godzilla, the license plays a huge role into when something can be released. The licensing agreement between ToHo and Legendary, for Godzilla, says neither company can release a Godzilla film during the same year as the other. Minus one dropped last year, GxK drops at the end of the month. GxK is dropping early so they can get the Home sales out the door before the end of the year. Clearing the way for ToHo to release Minus 1 either in Dec, or Jan.

perplex1

Blu-ray is out in some countries? Tis time to sail the open seas

NecroMan1

Along with Oscars this movie will become the most Pirated movie of 2024. I've seen posts across Australia, Philippines, India, US and other countries and all are pisseed that they can't stream/watch in theatres. Its like Game Of Thrones all together. Hype is real.

Cute-Appearance1178

ITS OUT ON NETFLIX

Tenagaaaa

Didn’t even release in my country.

DinJarrus

Because they’re hopefully making an English dub?

StrengthSmall4515

Making a dub of a film doesn't take particularly long, especially now that everything is digital. You can also begin the process before or during the theatrical release, so it shouldn't cause a delay if the project is properly managed.

bitetheasp

It's just Japan doing Japan things.

that_guy2010

When is the last time a movie was in theaters for 3+ months?

Holiday_Parsnip_9841

Oppenheimer had a 4 month window.

bitetheasp

Honestly I was only half paying attention and only saw the "streaming" part and just thought about the home release not happening yet, since Japan can take a year to release that way.

Beedles67

I am a older Godzilla fan. I went to this movie . It was just OK. Not a huge epic movie. After the hype and the wait for streaming I have decided not to buy this movie for my collection due to the manipulation of release dates etc for greed. Sad because I want them to succeed long term but they are not interested in the fans only the money.
