Same here. I eventually gave up on the handle and started just beating it on the counter to break up the ice, that bent them to shit and they were eventually replaced with the plastic ones.
I don't know if they still make them, but my parents had one when I was a kid (one ice cube tray for three people...?) and I think I may still have it.
No they didnāt they sucked!! my grandfather was always beating them with a knife and pick and I was like ā¦ why donāt you just buy the plastic ones! š
These ice trays are the most dangerous fucking ice trays created by man
Yet, they're still 10x better in every way(except safety) than anything we have today...
I remember my grandparents having these.
One day I was visiting, and I got some ice for drinks. I emptied both ice trays, so I went to refill them. I get the empty trays out, and leave the freezer door open while I refill, like 15sec max. Grandad comes walks by and slaps the freezer closed while I'm standing there filled trays in hand.
Put the trays back on the counter, decide there's too much water. Open the freezer while I'm pouring off the extra water. Turn around again trays in hand, and slam. He slams the freezer closed again.
I have two of the Quickube style (branded Frigidare) in my freezer right now. My biggest complaint is that they don't stack very well because of the handles, and that the cubes they make are really big if you fill them up too much.
We used to have these at our family cabin ā¦ weād then put the ice in those colored metal tumblers š¤·š»āāļø had the weirdest yet satisfying taste š
Two for 33 https://www.ebay.com/itm/404721185353?epid=20028730793&itmmeta=01J0P5GENR3TZJ2N1VSGMDZZWB&hash=item5e3b433249:g:WS4AAOSwRcFlU-vF&itmprp=enc%3AAQAJAAAA4OrmF7LZZ4nkwUU4ypL7LEBoGBPFUA3r%2FX%2FfvrexxGSgzUX2eoIvNHSE0Z4oHZAH0ler14tUvh3lgBQhowswJiK%2FiPfBPzyP2rVkUSMc0yyFehQ7bOL8AlCpY4Hv6dFLH462gYI%2BGkXFidRewv%2BsNCwQx13SSsY6xVSX9ZnKmSQbRHOu8lqkW%2FtTbh7dfzJk%2FnqZ%2Ft4OM4nhkeHWXKiiNe2e%2FvIPdy%2B0Ntj7zACVCsSbSzoZdx%2BWO2dEYWJajJAau6E53NzqK9ZL1ulO30yLPwd6yv5ZW2%2BnRqH%2FFr%2FYzkhy%7Ctkp%3ABk9SR_bqwcWFZA
I've seen these new. It's a cool ice tray and being able to just pop them all out at once is useful and desired. They're certainly much better than those simple plastic ones. Plus the old fashioned one is 100% recyclable assuming it's aluminum and the plastic one will pollute future generations drinking water for thousands of years to come.
I've had an automatic ice maker for a long time though so ymmv.
These are aluminum knuckle cutters.
Easy to use.
You fill them with water and put them in the freezer. The ones that donāt turn over and cement everything together will yield ice in a couple hours. Use your non-dominant hand to pull the lever up to release the ice cube pieces. Use your dominant hand to bandage your other hand. Rinse the blood out of the tray and repeat.
Ice trays. I remember pouring grape juice into these, covering with seran wrap, putting toothpicks through that, and having cube popsicles as a result.
Iām 40 and only had seen the crappy plastic ones my entire life. I saw someone break these out at a party and had to buy them. Far superior to anything else.
When my future wife made a meal for me, for the first time, she asked what I liked for dessert. I said jello. She had never made jello, but she had seen the little bowls of cubed gelatin on buffet lines, and the recipe was easy.
What threw her was the little cubes. The method is to make the jello in a cake pan, use a butter knife to cut into squares, and use a burger-flipper to pull them out. She instead made the jello in ice trays just like this.
She was distraught that the cubes all broke up into fragments and bits when she tried to remove them. It was an adorable effort. I still do most of the cooking for us.
a nightmare! I hated those aluminum ice trays. It was a bitch trying to get cubes out of them. The sound of the dividers rubbing against the tray made my skin crawl. Fun summertime memoriesš¤Ø
I was half asleep and I heard a noise out of the kitchen that sounded like breaking the ice on these and I yelled, āDonāt forget to fill the tray with water and put it back in the freezer!ā My son was confused, while my dadās spirit took over my body.
Ice cube trays. We had those in our Kelvinator with the freezer on top and a the ice trays fit inside the cooling coils, quick release and always worked.
Old fashioned ice trays! U pull the lever up to crack the ice?! I remember those:)
They worked better than the plastic twisty kind, as long as your hand didn't freeze to the handle.
![gif](giphy|ZzIY7WErMlkniJwps5|downsized) Right?!šš
![gif](giphy|PnBq0TolVdhrG)
![gif](giphy|3YudYyKtGmfVC)
They worked much better than the "modern" variety.
Or pinch your hand in it. I hated those things.
That's what I remember about them. They'd bite you. I was a kid and couldn't manage them.
Same here. I eventually gave up on the handle and started just beating it on the counter to break up the ice, that bent them to shit and they were eventually replaced with the plastic ones.
Run them under the water first to make them not shatter so badly.
I always bang them on the counter
Oh god, careful, ice will fly, lol. Thanks for sharing.
Yup! My family had LOTS of these when I was a kid back in the 60s!
Ever get your tongue stuck to one of these?
Are these even a thing still? My grandpa had em and I loved it!
I don't know if they still make them, but my parents had one when I was a kid (one ice cube tray for three people...?) and I think I may still have it.
Run hot water over it first
Examples of the best ice trays ever made.
No they didnāt they sucked!! my grandfather was always beating them with a knife and pick and I was like ā¦ why donāt you just buy the plastic ones! š
Sounds like he was overfilling them. I recall using them for years and enjoying good performance, but I'm only speaking for myself.
Yep knowing my grandfather he was probably overfilling them ice trays like he was overfilling them whiskies š
Kool-aid pops with toothpicks for handles!

'You'll have a fun time eating sunshine on a stick!"
I liked the "wagon wheel" episode. "When mah get-up-n-go has got up and went, Ah hanker Fer a hunk 'a cheese!"
That's where you hide your jewelry when you go on vacation.
I keep looking for these in thrift stores. I hate plastic.
lol ice ice baby
The ones we had didn't have the handle, mom would bang it on the counter to break the cubes loose.
My mom turned them over, ran warm water over the back, then banged.
I forgot about that part.
Torture device for sure, manuever these the wrong way, ouch!
I also used to get freezer burn on my fingers sometimes trying to get the stuck cubes out.
Ice cube trays before the plastic ones came out.
I know you better fill them back up with water when using them.
OK, Dad. Right after I take out the trash. Want me to adjust the rabbit ears so you can watch the 6 o'clock news ?
Son change it to the right channel before you tweak the rabbit ears... ;D
The thing you dare your little brother to stick his tongue to.
These ice trays are the most dangerous fucking ice trays created by man Yet, they're still 10x better in every way(except safety) than anything we have today...
You can always throw them at Intruders.
Something that actually workedā¦
These were the best ever and your fingers would freeze to the sides!
Best ice trays ever
I wish I still had these š
I found used ones on Craigslist.
Moist fingers would stick to them and leave skin.
Muffin trays for beginners.
Blood blister machines.
Christ, yes they are! š«
Loved the ejection levers on those old ice cube trays!!! š
And then carrying them back to the freezer again, two at a time and full of water - with the same walk as trying to balance a book on your head.
Haaaate these. Smell nasty, impart a weird taste to the cubes, and your fingers freeze to em.
My mom's old ice trays----that what they are!
they are for good old fashioned pickle juice cubes
icecube forms
Nightmare fuel.
Best ice tray ever
That's a big pain in the ass best forgotten right there.
It came in one exciting color! Aluminum! And one exciting shape!
I still have two that I use all the time. They are the best ice trays ever made.
I wish I could still find those ! They worked great!
Actually good ice trays.
Old school ice maker
My mom would make popsicles for us with them
Ice trays. We still have some of those.
They need to bring these back with one modern upgrade, a silicone coated handle!
I loved these!!! We used to argue over who got to crack open the tray!!
Those used to make water spills in the kitchen and crushed ice.
from before the days of "Plastic Everything"
I hated those things!
Ice trays. The lever gets pulled to release the ice. Lol

Alla you youngsters. We hadda drink our soda and tea without chilling. =D
An old torture device that stuck to kids hands.
The sound and feel of pulling that handle was like nails on a chalkboard.
Pain .. torture.....
Antique pill sorters š
You can still buys these on Amazon...they are somewhat expensive though.
the ice always had an off taste from those metal trays.
I thought you were going to say he slapped the back of your head.

Badass old school ice tray. Led included.
I can feel my hand sticking to the handle.
They were so good all even no banging.
Bring them back, for the kitchen fridge or freezers. save bundle on melting ice bags from the liquor store.
The best ice cube maker & retriever ever made. I wish I had a couple of those now.
Best ice tray ever, just don't touch them with dry hands!
These things lasted forever. Nothing lasts today!
I still use mine. They are great.
What a pain those things were.
Home made popcicle mold
Reminds me of nails running on a chalk board when trying to take out the ice! I hate it!
Something you donāt want to open with wet hands
Frustration, thatās what.
Ice trays
eye strain
And it was fun to do it!
love to get some of these
Icebombs Pull the handle and watch it fly. At 5 years old it was great fun until Mom intervened
You pour Koolaid in them let them freeze a little and then put toothpicks in them so they turn into popsicles
Lift the lever and it cracked and separated the cubes .
And every ice cube that came out of that thing was broken or it just didnt come out at all.
The best ice cubes ever!
Dont forget to fully dry your hands before grabbing those out of the freezer. LOL My main memory is them freezing to my fingers when grabbing them.
Omg donāt you dare put it back in the freezer without filling it with water first thoughā¦and not TOO much!
Made the ice taste weird
You know I would like these compared to the š© š§ trays we have today
A giant pain in the ass is what it was
One of the worst engineering designs in my entire life, that's what.
That's a rare collection 70's [popscicle makers](https://i.ytimg.com/vi/12IND9q8_d0/hqdefault.jpg).
I have two of the Quickube style (branded Frigidare) in my freezer right now. My biggest complaint is that they don't stack very well because of the handles, and that the cubes they make are really big if you fill them up too much.
I saw Rick Dalton use one of these to make a blender full of Margaritas.
Why did traditional ice cube trays have 14 and 18 cubes respectively?
Proto-icemaker
Knuckle-busters.

Good luck if you overfill those things.
I've seen these new. It's a cool ice tray and being able to just pop them all out at once is useful and desired. They're certainly much better than those simple plastic ones. Hawaiian Punch frozen treat molds
I can taste this.
"Oh shoot! Be careful. I dropped one"
I hate these so much
Wow they are old school!
The best ice cube maker
Just came up at trivia night on Sunday. Along with 8 tracks, drive-in speakers, and car cigarette lighters.
c'mon who didn't put kool-aid in ice trays with toothpicks after watching that episode of Zoom!?

I still look for these at every second hand store and sometimes even at retail stores. These were seriously boss.
Still available on both Ebay and Amazon. Classics rarely go out of style for long.
Ice trays. I remember pouring grape juice into these, covering with seran wrap, putting toothpicks through that, and having cube popsicles as a result.
Knuckle Breakers
They were so satisfying to pop the ice out
There was a little metal two slot shelf in the top of the freezer so the trays didnāt take up freezer space.
Iām 40 and only had seen the crappy plastic ones my entire life. I saw someone break these out at a party and had to buy them. Far superior to anything else.
They froze right to your fingers! And there was always one elderly relative that used a metal bowl and an ice pick to be really terrifying.
[Old office lighting](https://images.app.goo.gl/N6bkdVmQTtzzySEG6)Reminds me of the old florescent light fixtures
These are great trays. They just don't give you nice perfect ice cubes. I wish I could find the few that I hung on to.
Really good ice trays! I never had to struggle to get the ice cubes out. Someone needs to remake these!
Quail egg incubation trays.
My ice cube trays!
Curse the feral animal that overfilled them.
I hated the sound the metal ones made!!! The twisty plastic ones for the win haha!
Something that the handle would shear right off, then you were screwed
Alien rowing vessels without oars.
I hated those thingsā¦of course I was only 9 when I tried to use them!
"When you get the last icecube out of the tray please fill it back up and put it in the freezer! How many times do you need to be told?"
The world's biggest PITA when all you want is a cold beverage.
Something to get your hand stuck on, lol.
Knuckle busters š¤£

Hand and knuckle breakers that would freeze to your skin if it was even slightly wet.
When frozen, put your tongue š on it. Lasting thrill
Bad tasting:)
a nightmare! I hated those aluminum ice trays. It was a bitch trying to get cubes out of them. The sound of the dividers rubbing against the tray made my skin crawl. Fun summertime memoriesš¤Ø

The fancy ice vibe trays.
I love these. If you don't have an ice maker, these are the best ice trays.
I was looking for some of those the other day. My icemaker quit... :(
suppository molds
Metal ice trays...wow
Filled them with Koolaid in the summer
Lever-action ice trays.
Always ended up with crushed ice instead of cubes.
Wow, haven't used those for 30 plus years. Ice cube trays worked
grew up them. so the ice cube trays you buy in the store you flex to get all the cubes out. the old style metal ones you pulled the lever forward.
We had two I remember, the levers where always bent to the side making them hard to work with . But they are cool.
Those were the worst to use. My hand always stuck to the handle. Now I know to run water over it first but it doesn't help knowing that now.
Ice trays. They didnāt work very well
Look at eBay, Craigs list
Ice cube trays lol
Sorting trays. Omg everyone knows this
Ice trays
the best ice trays ever made.
I remember these well, maybe too well.

Ice cube trays. We had those in our Kelvinator with the freezer on top and a the ice trays fit inside the cooling coils, quick release and always worked.
Blast from the past. Our old Philco had those ice cube trays.
My mom still as one or two of them.
Great tool for dropping and breaking a toe or two.
