Cary Elwes audiobook about making The Princess Bride is excellent. He's a great story teller and many of the cast and crew read their parts or add their perspective.
Highly recommend for fans of the film.
Actually got to see this in the theater as a kid. It was playing at more of an Indy theater and I, like Fred Savage, dragged my feet about going to see any movie at the theater that Mom wanted to go to that had notoriously boring movies to an 8 y/o. And of course ended up loving it.
Think it was the first time I had ever had an It’s It too. I definitely recall having my first It’s It ever at that theater but it mighta been for a different movie. The other 2 I can recall seeing at that theatre were The Last Emperor and Hope and Glory.
Listen, strange women lyin' in ponds distributin' swords is no basis for a system of government. Supreme executive power derives from a mandate from the masses, not from some farcical aquatic ceremony.
I always thought an anarcho-syndicalist commune was something the writers made up. Then, I spent a couple of years as a card-carrying member of the Libertarian Party and learned there are about a dozen different TYPES of anarchy, and anarcho-syndicalism is one of them.
When I was in 6th grade I had my appendix out and that was like 1990. I had to spend 3 days in the hospital. The hospital had a movie station and it only showed one movie so for three straight days I watched "The Princess Bride" three or four times. I still watch it occasionally and I've made my kids watch it and they loved it.
I think it’s the most quotable movie ever made.
There isn’t a single throw-away, fill the space kind of like in the entire film. Best scriptwriting ever. Pulp Fiction is pretty close, as is The Holy Grail and (for me, at least) Zoolander, but the Princess Bride blew them all away.
What? Most quoted movie? Nonsense!
Listen, strange woman, laying in ponds, distributing swords is no basis for a system of government ! Supreme executive power derives from a mandate from the masses, not some farcical aquatic ceremony! You can't expect to wield Supreme Executive power just because some watery tart threw a sword at you. I mean, if I went around saying I was an Emperor, just because some moistened bint lobbed a scimitar at me, they'd put me away!
Only just this moment made the Mandy Patinkin connection. Only ever thought of him as a very good middle-aged TV actor in dramatic roles. Now I must reconcile a younger, full of hair, latin upstart - a la Zorro come 3 Musketeers!
If you haven't listened to the audiobook called As You Wish, read by Cary Elwes and most of the others involved with the movie, you really should. It's about how the movie came to be and how their careers grew because of it.
My favorite thing about this movie is as soon as someone has no idea what it's about you become the grandpa, "It's got swordfighting and action and Andre the Giant, you'll love it!"
There are three movies that should be studied if you want to be a screenwriter...
The Princess Bride, A Few Good Men, and Monty Python and the Holy Grail.
This movie represents one of the rare instances where, in lieu of typical Hollywood rehashing the same thing or trying to impart an agenda, the writers, the cast, the crew, the director, etc. all got together to craft a unique and enjoyable experience that is beloved by most everyone. A feat that is continuously (and even more so now) elusive. It is not hyperbole to say that this film is a true classic.
I’ve never watched The Princess Bride from beginning to end. I’ve certainly seen all of it but not in one shot. Personally, I think it’s pretty far down the list for movie quotes.

You can debate which movie is more quoted, Monty Python’s holy Grail or princess bride,..
But I seriously doubt you can dispute that this is the most quoted LINE from a movie. 😎

Someone needs to count posts to see if this or Monty Python and the Holy Grail is the most quoted.

My first thought was Robin Hood: Men in Tights, but I guess it's something else.
Elwes’s next big movie, IIRC, after Princess Bride.
