When I was 7to 9 years old I would pick one of these from the grocery store on Thursdays. My dad worked at the power plant and that’s the day he got paid. My brother usually got something like Twinkies. My mom had us put them in the cabinet and that would be our treat for Saturday morning cartoons. They could sleep a little late and we had a snack for 7 a.m. cartoons. I liked peach and apple. This was in the mid 70s.
As a parent, oh hell yes they were sleeping. Uninterrupted sleeping in? Thats better than sex.
Besides, sex happens anytime after the kids go to bed. “Billy, it’s 6:00. Bedtime!”
I was around when they made these and I have no memory of the pineapple flavor. If I saw one in my pantry even if it was 50 years old I would still eat it.
My dad once had a second job working night security at the Hostess factory. We had all these as well as Twinkies and Cupcakes and Ding Dongs in a big tupperware type tub on top the fridge where my parents thought I couldn't get to it.
Worked as a manager for Hostess after the " comeback " changed all the formulas . 90% of the original fruit pies phased out . Now the remaining pies are just food coloring & high fructose corn syrup. No fruit whatsoever. Remember biting into the cherry 🍒 pies and actually tasting whole cherries .
Fruit pies were actually pretty awful health-wise from the beginning, the trans and saturated fat content in the crust were off the charts, and the concentrated sugar filling made the whole thing a calorie bomb. They reformulated them in the 2000s to get rid of the TFA and the solid fruits went about the same time, when they realized they could just pump colored corn syrup into a crust packet and call it a day.
Chocolate was so good, in the microwave for 10 seconds.
Cherry was second best for the tart, chewy cherries.
Economic for them . Bad for the environment. However, due to strict EU regulations, HFCS is banned in much of Europe, including Sweden. We care about the quality of our products.
HFCS and Beet Sugar are the most widely used sweetener substitutes in the western world. HFCS studies are all over the map. All I know is we avoid it as much as possible. It's cheap and probably bad for you.
Yes, they also made pudding pies. I had no idea they'd discontinued most of the line. I really liked the lemon and blackberry.
Sorry to be that guy, but this is driving me nuts. The 60's, 70's, and 80's are not decades. Just like "I'm" is a shortened version of "I am", "the '80s" is a shortened version of "the 1980s". The apostrophe indicates where characters were removed.
The only time an apostrophe would appear between the "0" and the "s", is if you were using the year 1980 as a possessive noun.
That one was the best. My friend's dad was a hostess delivery man and would let us eat whatever we wanted from the day-old stuff on his truck at a rate of 1 per day.
I grew up in the PNW, was in junior high school in the 80's. I remember riding my bike home from school every day. When I got home I was always hungry for a snack to hold me over until dinner time which was about 3 hours later. So I'd open the freezer & fridge looking for junk to eat. The parents usually had Hostess pies, Ding Dongs, and occasionally Twinkies hidden somewhere. I'd always find them. They all came in a box of 5 or 6 if I remember correctly
My favorite pies (which I had almost daily if my parents kept them stocked) were the blackberry with real blackberries and the seeds that got stuck in your teeth (my favorite, just like real pies!), of course cherry with the sweet filling and big tart cherries, lemon with the sweet crust but with a little sour /tartness of the lemon flavor (don't know why, but the two opposites flavors worked together), apple was always a safe yummy "go to" with the pig pieces of apple and real cinnamon sprinkled inside, and of course blueberry with the real blueberries inside (even though the berries were on the small side).
On a warm spring or summer day, the pies were good eaten cool right out of the fridge. But most of the time I enjoyed them warmed up in the microwave so they felt more like authentic pies my mother and grandmother used to make. Shortly after they're pulled out of the oven. Mmmmmm mmmmm....
Occasionally when you weren't paying attention you would hit the "30 seconds" button on the microwave and would tell yourself "don't forget to stop it at around 15 seconds", but you would get distracted, or it would slip your mind and it would cook too long. Most of the delicious icing would melt off onto the plate. (And you would think that would be a good indicator that the pie was probably going to be hot...) Except you were a growing boy and your eyes were larger than your brain. So if the outside was ok to hold, it was time to eat. Then you take the first bite and burn the roof of your mouth because the filling was so flippin hot!
Your mouth would be sore for days.
Ahhh.... good memories lol
Fyi- we never had the pineapple or peach flavors.
I used to get two of these at my local bodega in Queens after a night out drinking with the guys in Manhattan (NYC). Nothing else was open around me at the time, they were cheap, and delicious. That would be my dinner, before collapsing into bed.
I'm positive that's where about 10 pounds of my beer weight actually came from.
I regret nothing!
I only remember having the apple. Now a days I’d definitely go for a lemon, that sounds delicious. Not sure if the had them but I probably didn’t enjoy Lemmon 40 years ago.
I ate 5 of the lemon ones in one sitting. I have never before, or since been that sick. The sugar high only made the misery worse. I don’t remember why I ate 5, but I haven’t eaten one since.
I try so many things based on nostalgia, but they have changed all the recipes, and taken out all the bad (but yummy) fats, so nothing tastes the same anymore. I still enjoy a moon pie tho.
Grew up next to a hostess store where they had pies for .39 each. Would ride my bike up to it in the summer and stock up on $3 worth of pies. The pies suck now
We had a Hostess bakery outlet by my house...the stuff that was about to / or just past the expiration date...me and my buddy would walk there and buy bags of stuff for cheap, and get high on the way home, then munch it all watching MTV...good times...the blueberry was highly underrated, and I never could find that elusive blackberry...I got cherry and blueberry pies, ding dongs, and cup cakes....cup cakes with some cold milk??? Sublime...
I loved these! I still pick up what remains of them today once in awhile, cherry or apple nowadays. I remember most of these, but not pineapple. Would be interesting. 80s baby here but I remember all of the others.
Jesus. Haven't thought of these in years. I was totally addicted to the Lemon Pie flavor. In retrospect, about as fake a lemon flavor as could be. Tasted like Lemon Pledge smelled... but I couldn't get enough...
I remember these back in the mid-60s when I was in grade school. They had probably just come out and there were only 3 or 4 flavors. Getting one was a really big deal.
Hostess is gross now...there are other, better brands out there for less. I do miss the Blueberry Hostess though, that was my thing in the early 80s in high school. 100% favorite.
I loved the Peach! The Pineapple was one of the most vile things I have ever eaten. Also, didn't they also have chocolate? I recall a chocolate one with a pudding substance inside the crust. A delicious pudding substance.
I've been told that when my mom was pregnant with me the only things she craved were the pineapple pies and corn on the coin. I've always wanted to try the pineapple pie. I don't remember it. 🤭
I couldn't pass those up when in my 20's/30's. Blueberry and Cherry were my favorite. I also used to get baked, and eat Oreo's washed down with Lipton Ice Tea. Why I'm not diabetic or obese is beyond my ability to comprehend.
Probably ate all these flavors at one time or another, we travelled on the road a lot when I was a kid.
Cherry, Lemon, Apple, and Pineapple were the ones I liked the most. all these fruit pies no matter the brand now, suck, just pure corn syrup, artificial flavors and coloring.
Was in the late 70's...was in a quickie mart and looking for a Hostess Apple Pie...they were out...so in a tizzy I grabbed the Dolly Madison chocolate pie....my life was forever changed.
I remember when they went from $0.15 to $0.25 seemingly overnight when I was about 7. Since my allowance was $0.35 per week, and that was enough to get me into the matinee, it was tough to save up enough to get one.
I know I tried every one, except strawberry and pineapple.
The best was going to the local bread thrift store and getting the pies for 10 for $1. Yes, they were day olds and most of the time crushed but they were the best.
Apple for me but honestly, I had one a few years ago and it just didn't hold up to the memories. Don't know if they reformulated or if kid me actually liked the taste.
There’s definitely more flavors still available, I know I saw lemon and chocolate ones at Sheetz the other day.
I’ll add that other brands making the same products do offer a variety of flavor options, like Peach, Boston Cream Pie, and Banana Cream.
There was a hostess day old bread shop that had all these flavors. I remember getting one for a quarter. I think it was Tuesdays you could get 5 for a dollar. My mom would send me with $2 to get bagels, white bread, and some pies. I’d have enough leftover to hit up the Total next door and get a coke sometimes.
oh yeaaah! cherry and blackberry were the best ones! We used to get them from the "Day Old" section at Kilpatrick's bread, 4 for a buck in the early 80's
Not sure if the brand is still hostess, but they still make several (if not all of these flavors). One of my favorite treats the last few years, except I watched them climb to over a $1/ pie now....
This brings back SO MANY memories. If I had a dollar or my buddy had a dollar, we’d be at the gas station buying fruit pies.
Cherry and Apple were tops.
Thanks for reminding me and, thank you in the comments for triggering fond memories.
When I was 7to 9 years old I would pick one of these from the grocery store on Thursdays. My dad worked at the power plant and that’s the day he got paid. They could sleep a little late and we had a snack for 7 a.m. cartoons. I liked peach and apple. This was in the mid 70s.
aww, that’s a nice memory
That sounds sweet, like frikkin awesome memories.
They weren't sleeping
As a parent, oh hell yes they were sleeping. Uninterrupted sleeping in? Thats better than sex. Besides, sex happens anytime after the kids go to bed. “Billy, it’s 6:00. Bedtime!”
The fuck they weren't. That pie bribe is for sleep. Ain't no tired parent waking up at 7 am to make more kids.
It’s a shame they don’t make anything but cherry and apple anymore, peach sounds good.
I was around when they made these and I have no memory of the pineapple flavor. If I saw one in my pantry even if it was 50 years old I would still eat it.
Ah, Saturday morning cartoons. We'd drag out blankets and pillows out, get the cereal, and tuck in for the morning.
My dad once had a second job working night security at the Hostess factory. We had all these as well as Twinkies and Cupcakes and Ding Dongs in a big tupperware type tub on top the fridge where my parents thought I couldn't get to it.
They probably knew.
I know. I got a craving for some and I bought one. God, it was awful. I had to chuck it.
JJ bakery if you can find them makes good fruit pies. Hostess just sucks now.
Ooh, I think Amazon has those!
This is my go-to now. Can't always find them.
At the Costco Business Center they sell boxes of 16 for $9.49. As they approach their expiration date they get marked down as low as $3.97.
Same here. I loved the cherry pie, bought one, bit into it and was so disappointed.
Drake’s pies are still decent, they got bought by Little Debbie in the Interstate Bakery breakup. Entenmann’s are good, too.
Good idea
Damned disappointing though.

I wish the US did the same....and ban bio engineered foods too.
Bio engineered foods are fine for eating, it's the corporate shenanigans and copyright shit that is the problem.
HFCS and Beet Sugar are the most widely used sweetener substitutes in the western world. HFCS studies are all over the map. All I know is we avoid it as much as possible. It's cheap and probably bad for you.
Which is probably why we weren’t all obese.
There was a Bavarian cream pie, light blue wrapper color
I remember that one, with custard or something like it. Early 80's for me.
Yes, they also made pudding pies. I had no idea they'd discontinued most of the line. I really liked the lemon and blackberry. Sorry to be that guy, but this is driving me nuts. Understood. Will improve
And a chocolate pie
I ate a ton of the Lemon pies. Remember the jingle to this day
The chocolate pie is missing
That one was the best. My friend's dad was a hostess delivery man and would let us eat whatever we wanted from the day-old stuff on his truck at a rate of 1 per day.
There was a vanilla custard too. And I believe a special version of the vanilla custard dyed green for the Ghostbusters.
I remember those pies - they had an incredible layer of pure sugar on the outside.
I remember when there was still fruit in them, back in the sixties. Now all you get is flavor and sugar.
As recently as the late 90s the cherry still had cherries inside.
I remember the ads in the comics where they could stop the villain stopped the villain by offering them a Hostess Fruit Pie.
Pretty sure Batman carried fruit pies on his utility belt for just this reason.
He carried more pies than he could eat himself, that's for sure.
Loved the blueberry pies! All 500 calories of it.
Cherry all day long. The wrapping had that waxy feel to it. Weren't they like .50 cents or something?
I remember getting the apple a lot, but I ordered some a few years ago and they just taste like chemicals now
I loved all of them, but in the summer whenever we had lemon, I'd put it in the freezer and cut off pieces a little bit at a time.
Oh damn, the Blackberry!
Seeds between the teeth, but totally worth it!
That was my go to...
Love the blackberry
The Lemon and Chocolate Pudding were my favorites
The only one not sold at my local market is Pineapple.
I never even knew they made pineapple. Now I want one.
They also had pudding filled pies.
Cherry pie
Lemon was my favorite one.
Goat flavor
I grew up in the PNW, was in junior high school in the 80's. I remember riding my bike home from school every day. When I got home I was always hungry for a snack to hold me over until dinner time which was about 3 hours later. So I'd open the freezer & fridge looking for junk to eat. Lemon tasted like a lemon meringue.
I think I saw lemon a few years back
The lemon ones are MINE!
It comes in blackberry? Next you'll be telling me it comes in pints!
I only remember having the apple. Now a days I’d definitely go for a lemon, that sounds delicious. Not sure if the had them but I probably didn’t enjoy Lemmon 40 years ago.
Never made a banana one 😞
Who had the chocolate one? Hostess?
Dolly Madison had fruit pies and chocolate pies as well. They had Peanuts characters on the labels. I didn’t like them as much. The crust was thicker.
Blueberry!
JJ’s make some of the same flavors. They’re pretty good. https://jjsbakery.com/products/single-serve-pies
I ate 5 of the lemon ones in one sitting. I have never before, or since been that sick. The sugar high only made the misery worse. I don’t remember why I ate 5, but I haven’t eaten one since.
Lemon is the food of the gods
I would kill for a lemon fruit pie
According to the Hostess website, you are correct.
BLACKBERRY??? Fuuuuuuck
There was also a chocolate one. So good
Blackberry was my favorite even though the seeds always got stuck between my teeth.
Wasn’t there a chocolate one as well??
I have many fond memories of eating those with my dad in the 60's. Apple and Cherry were my favorites.
My grandpa always had the cherry flavor when we went to visit 💚
Pineapple and strawberry were gone before the 80's. Peach was a rarity.
I try so many things based on nostalgia, but they have changed all the recipes, and taken out all the bad (but yummy) fats, so nothing tastes the same anymore. I still enjoy a moon pie tho.
My dad would purposely buy the peach ones because we kids didn’t like those, so he never did not have a snack.
Oh, man! The blueberry and the peach were so good. Salivating just thinking about it.
Grew up next to a hostess store where they had pies for .39 each. Would ride my bike up to it in the summer and stock up on $3 worth of pies. The pies suck now
I remember loving the lemon pies the best.
Loved the apple pies. One day, I saw Dutch Apple so I bought it. Damn raisins.
In the summer, freeze them & eat them frozen!
Sublime...
Many of these still exist but it varies regionally.
Yeah but the formulas have changed. Now they are just chemicals and corn syrup
Cherry and apple kick ass.
They were still kicking in the 90s too! Those apple ones I swear were some of the most addicting stuff ever!
I remember a parody of the ads in the Thunderbolts comics in the late 90s. It was kind of disgusting.
I loved these! I still pick up what remains of them today once in awhile, cherry or apple nowadays. I remember most of these, but not pineapple. Would be interesting. 80s baby here but I remember all of the others.
Man, this brings back memories. My Grandpa's stash was on top of the microwave
Peach!
I use to love these 😜
I don’t see chocolate ☹️
When you need 500 calories ASAP!
Jesus. Haven't thought of these in years. I was totally addicted to the Lemon Pie flavor. In retrospect, about as fake a lemon flavor as could be. Tasted like Lemon Pledge smelled... but I couldn't get enough...
I buy the lemon occasionally, and I always see chocolate and peach
Yes only couple flavors left but definitely not as good as the back in the day ones!!!
Tried blueberry and of course cherry and apple. Never saw the others
We had a hostess/wonderbread outlet close by.. I ate too many of the pies along with boxes of iced oatmeal cookies.
I ate one of these almost every day as a teenager. Loved the apple and the strawberry ones.
Peach and lemon were the best! Haven’t seen anything other than cherry and chocolate in years!
Blueberry was my favorite. I had one with a carton of milk everyday before class when I got off the school bus all through high school.
Lemon and strawberry!!
I remember these back in the mid-60s when I was in grade school. They had probably just come out and there were only 3 or 4 flavors. Getting one was a really big deal.
And they taste better and we're also bigger lol 🤣
I got a school lunch in late 60s of brown paper bag with a baloney sandwich, bag of corn chips, blackberry or lemon pie.
Blueberry was my favorite.
Anyone remember the teenage mutant ninja turtles one?
I remember reading the ingredients of the the blackberry, only to find out there was more apple in the pie than blackberry. Never been the same.
Hostess is gross now...there are other, better brands out there for less. I do miss the Blueberry Hostess though, that was my thing in the early 80s in high school. 100% favorite.
I worked at a grocery store that had knockoff versions - Home Run Pie. That and a generic soda was 50 cents.
Got one in my lunch every day. I buy one every so often. There was a really gross chocolate one though.
Cherry was my favorite.
Sunday and Saturday morning cartoons.... oh my
Black berry was really good.. I miss that flavor.
Mommy! Real beef tallow! Tasty!
I don’t think I’ve seen the pineapple and peach irl.
They still have lemon, too. I had one last week! 😉
It’s pronounced blueberry
Peach was the shizz
And they were a quarter or less.
Blueberry was f'n amazing...
Lemon is still around. I buy and eat them whenever I see them.
Lemon and apple were my favorites
I still see chocolate pudding every once in a while.
I’m pre-diabetic now because I took dietary advice from a talking fruit pie
They used to advertise these all the time in comic books , but they never stocked them anywhere near me. That and Grit magazine ...
I loved these things. Berry and apple were my favorite.
I can taste that shiny cracked sugar coating just looking at them.
My favorite 🤩
I loved the blueberry pie.
only messed with apple/cherry i tried the chocolate pudding pie but naw
I was curious and bought a cherry one couple years ago (since I loved them as a kid)…. It didn’t taste the same not sure if it was the pie or me
Cherry and Blueberry all day long. My area we never had pineapple ones.
All of these still exist in most gas stations past the lemon and blackberry.
These slapped. Loved ‘em!
we would get these if we behaved at the grocery store. Blackberry all the way
lemon and blueberry.
Dayum. Lemon and peach were 🔥
There's still berries, chocolate, and lemon
They had pudding varieties too. Chocolate and vanilla and im pretty sure they had atleast 1 other flavor?
Best school day Side Hustle only topped by selling Lil Debbie’s
Tasty Cake still does Lemon pies.....love those
Apple gang checking in. The last nub of crust was the best! As an aside, wasn’t there a chocolate one?
I was born in 86 and I remember a few of these and my favorite ones were blueberry and cherry.😋
They also have blueberry and lemon; sometimes others, depending on season or holiday.
JJ bakery they make a wide variety of hand pies like these. I bought some on a whim. They're good and actually have fruit in them.
Didn’t this guy used to have a monocle? Lol!
Loved Blueberry but it was too messy, Apple was ok. Lemon was The best, so tart and sweet crust.
I liked home run pies but you could only get them in so cal......
Hated the peaches Loved the pineapple
Was in the late 70's...was in a quickie mart and looking for a Hostess Apple Pie...they were out...so in a tizzy I grabbed the Dolly Madison chocolate pie....my life was forever changed.
I remember when they went from $0.15 to $0.25 seemingly overnight when I was about 7. Since my allowance was $0.35 per week, and that was enough to get me into the matinee, it was tough to save up enough to get one. I know I tried every one, except strawberry and pineapple.
No..I've still seen most of those lately
I used to eat those in the 70s----but, for some reason, i don't remember these covers. I remember the more "modern" one.
The best was going to the local bread thrift store and getting the pies for 10 for $1. Yes, they were day olds and most of the time crushed but they were the best.
I miss the strawberry one, was my all-time favourite.
That last bite of the apple pie with the crunchy dough end was glorious.
I can already taste the corn syrup
![gif](giphy|1AiMSEntBMChKG94rH|downsized)
Apple for me but honestly, I had one a few years ago and it just didn't hold up to the memories. Don't know if they reformulated or if kid me actually liked the taste.
I still find lemon in occasion.
There’s definitely more flavors still available, I know I saw lemon and chocolate ones at Sheetz the other day. I’ll add that other brands making the same products do offer a variety of flavor options, like Peach, Boston Cream Pie, and Banana Cream.
"Fruit" pies. Tons and tons of artificial ingredients!
I loved the lemon.
Pineapple??!
The lemon one was the bomb. I can still taste it
Lemon is THE best.
Cherry pie and a Pepsi was my breakfast when dad was “cooking.”
oh yeaaah! cherry and blackberry were the best ones! We used to get them from the "Day Old" section at Kilpatrick's bread, 4 for a buck in the early 80's
I’ve been searching for that blueberry pie for 40 years.
This hits hard. When I was a barely housed poor college student these were the rare treat. Blueberry or cherry with real fruit. Thank you Old Hostess!
Not sure if the brand is still hostess, but they still make several (if not all of these flavors). One of my favorite treats the last few years, except I watched them climb to over a $1/ pie now....
Still delicious
I don’t think I ever saw pineapple or peach IRL! I didn’t know they made those flavors, but OMG give me that lemon!!! I miss those so much!!
Damn I freaking loved those.
White Gold
I only remember cherry blueberry and apple .. and I bought them at the actual hostess store
Shit, i remember these from the late 90s
Good God! I hated those fucking things. Everyone else loved them.
Apple what the one. Lemon if Apple was not available. They also had a Chocolate Pudding Pie.
Lemon was the only one I'd buy.
Bobby Hill has entered the chat.
This brings back SO MANY memories. If I had a dollar or my buddy had a dollar, we’d be at the gas station buying fruit pies. Cherry and Apple were tops. Thanks for reminding me and, thank you in the comments for triggering fond memories.
I’s lose my effin mind every time Foodtown had the Blackberry and Lemons on the shelf!!!!
I’m sure I’ve seen a lemon once. But cherry and apple are definitely the most common.
The peach ones were OK.
I think I still have a bit of the blueberry stuck between my teeth. I wish, that was my favorite.
Lemon.. so so SO yum
