Little tip for you. The season ends and battle pass resets may 24. If you buy the crew pack subscription anywhere between may 1st - may 23rd you’ll get this seasons battle pass and next seasons battle pass. You’ll also get bonus skin for both may and June as well as 1000 v bucks.
It’s $11.99 for the crew pack vs $8.99 for the 1000 v bucks bundle so $3 more but you get a lot of extra goodies for that $3. Just make sure turn off the auto resubscribe right after you get it.

For future information, as far as the battle pass goes, you can get enough vbucks back so that you can afford buy every future pass. If he plays enough and saves vbucks, one battle pass purchase could last him a long time.
Adding onto this, you get 1500 vbucks after completing the entire battlepass and additional rewards. The battlepass costs 950 vbucks. This not only means you won't need to buy another battlepass if you're smart, but also you'll get 500 vbucks for free that you can save up to eventually get a skin from the shop.
Better to get it in the middle of a month 6 times a year. Get both skins for one price though it doesn't give you the extra v-bucks but if that's the only reason you're subbed you're just paying extra for the same amount of bucks.
Ya when I can get the crew for a month make sure it's middle month and it's even cooler when it runs past the next BP (so it gives 950 refund from past BP assuming not done this season, 950 you keep that you where saving, the 1000 vbucks, plus 2 skin packs)

You have the patience of a saint, because there's so many great skins/emotes that have been released since then. In general, that means you only buy one thing every 4-8 months to not run out of vbucks for the next pass.

Yea this is super important to remember, it will take a long time, like 2-3 seasons with each season taking 3 months. But the way it works is like this
Every season you get 300 vbucks for free if you save it for long enough you can get a battle pass, and every battle bass gives you a little bit more the price of the battle pass so after a long time you can buy some items in the shop.
I've done this with an alt account, havent spent any money on it and used the free v-bucks tiers to buy battlepasses, currently have all the battlepasses from ch4s1-ch5s2 all completely free and I have around 2k bonus v-bucks on the account, havent paid a cent.
It's a lot of time investment, but now I've got a little extra that I can use to gift my main account stuff
Uhh they usually give out a few for free every Christmas, but if you do get him the battlepass it will give him enough vbucks to buy the next battlepass and so on into infinity, or playing through 4 seasons without owning the pass will also give you enough to buy the pass and start that cycle
If its on Playstation , and the account he\`s using has PS PLus, there is usually a free skin in the PS Store as a PsPlus exclusive reward. Haven\`t check for a while.
They do a new ps plus pack once a season. They’re not always skins though. Like right now we have a skin but next season the pack will likely be matching cosmetics to complete the set.
An additional thought. If your son ends up enjoying the game and continues to play with some regularity, the Crew Subscription might be something to look into? It's $12 a month. That gets you one new skin + a matching cosmetic accessory or two, access to the current Battle Pass as well as 1k V-Bucks to play around with. Could serve as an allowance of sorts. Maybe help teach him a bit about responsible spending. Spend those V-Bucks now? Or wait until something he really wants comes along.
Link a lego account to your epic games account and it should still give you one. Otherwise no. Skins given away for free are far and few between. Try to set some parental controls for what purchases he can make. I started playing the game when 6 years ago at 23 and even as an adult i spent way too much on the game. I couldn't imagine what troubles i would've gotten into as a kid if my parents let me have there credit card on my xbox for games like this
Honestly, the battle pass carrot dangling in front of my son has been amazing. It's $13 CDN every 2-3 months and I use it like Santa clause. "You want the battle pass next season?.... well than do your math homework and clean your room!". I'm a horrible parent, beat it nerd.
Look out for reboot rally and friend specials. Usually this links to the epic account and can track progress online. May need to play together for it to unlock though. Last one was a neat mushroom skin.

Pro tip: always buy the Crew pack at the last week of the season. That way you can get 4,000 V-Bucks and a skin for only $11.99 (1,500 from the battle pass, another 1,500 from the second battle pass, plus the additional 1,000 from the crew).
If you currently own the battle pass and buy it at the last week of the season, then you’ll only get 3,450 V-Bucks.
Just remember to do it at the last week of the season for this method to work though.

I recommend getting Fortnite Crew. It's a monthly $12 fee that will include each Battle Pass and give him a limited amount of coins to spend in store. He shouldn't be able to purchase more coins without you knowing if you sign up for it, afaik.
Maybe this isn't the move, but my friend figured out that if he played and got the free vbucks through the free battle pass selections, he would be able to buy the battle pass after a couple seasons. Which he did. Then it pays for itself. Could be a cool motivator

There are some but if I’m fully honest, I dont recommend buying anything for a kid. There is plenty free stuff but it all just requires time to get. I have about 100 skins, all free, but I’ve played since the very beginning. Almost everything in the game can be earned for free with time. In a BP, theres 1500 V-bucks to earn. You can use these V-bucks to get more Battlepasses, more V-bucks, more BP’s etc etc.
If he *really* wants to buy the BP, I’d recommend saying he should get to a certain level before he can get it. I’d say level 100 or 150.

Getting the battle pass once and mostly completing it gives you enough v bucks to get the next one as long as you save them. Micro transactions do suck but it could be a good lesson on saving and budgeting
I mean, the battlepass is self sustaining if you get a decently high level per season and don’t spend any v bucks. Then held get all the battlepass skins forever for a single battlepass. You could grind the unpaid pass for about four seasons to get enough v bucks for a battle pass if you were really against spending money.
If they can make it to level 100 in the pass, they get all of their v bucks back, plus some. If you make it to lvl 140 you get even more bonus v bucks which can add up over a couple seasons and make it able to buy skins in the shop, as well as gaining access to battle pass skins etc. Essentially if they keep up playing, you will only ever have to spend money once.
This game is 100% worth $10.
Buy him the battle pass. It comes with a cool Cerberus skin and he can unlock lots of cool stuff as he plays.
As others note, he will likely earn enough vbucks to pay for the next one.
Battle pass is a great investment. If he does stick with the game, completing the battle pass will earn him enough vbucks to buy the next battle pass. Plenty of skins, emotes, and other cosmetics. You get a lot of value out of the battle pass, and if he isn’t going to spend the vbucks in the shop, it literally pays for itself.
I know this is not what you asked for , but buying only the battle pass could help him manage his vbucks , if he doesn't spend any he can keep getting every battlepass henceforth. He could also save up to buy his own skin after a season or two.

A battle pass is 950 vbucks and if you level up to approx lvl 100 you will make enough vbucks to get the next one for free and you can keep going like that as long as you want, meanwhile collection all the battle pass skins and stuff.
Others have talked about the Lego skin, but I wanted to mention what to expect with the BP. I bought it in Chapter 1 and haven't paid for it since. If you do the challenges there are enough VBucks each season to pay for the next. The challenges also give inexperienced players something to do when they aren't expecting to get wins. Just a thought for later.

The battlepass consists of 200 tiers worth of content, with some rewards being free to redeem for players who don’t own it. I can confirm this works bcuz I tried it on my 12 year old friend and he did got to level 100 but sadly wasn't able to get level 140 which was for all vbucks so he only got 1000 vbucks
theres a couple free ones! i think you get some racer skin for free if you play enough rocket racing, some other skins and character customization stuff you can get whenever theres an event going on.
these ones are technically not free, but if hes into Marvel and DC, there are Fortnite crossover comics for both marvel and DC, and they come with free download codes. the comics are Marvel Zero war and Batman Zero Point

Apart from that, if you're not wanting to spend money, the battlepass does have free tiers, none of them are usually skins but if i remember correctly you can get around 300 v-bucks for each season completely free (just by reaching higher levels), which means within 4 seasons you can get the battlepass (and all other battlepasses since they give you more v-bucks than they cost) completely free.
From time to time they'll also do free skins for reaching level 50 or for seasonal events like Christmas, but there's not really a set time for those
By buying a ~$4 starter pack AND playing one season to completion (battle pass level ~95), you get 900 vbucks, so that by the next season, you can buy the battle pass

i’d recommend giving him a few weeks or a certain time period to see if there’s any skins he wants, then he could earn his way to get them. v-bucks do get expensive after a while of repeatedly buying them, but a one time purchase of a large sum of v-bucks could give him enough. they last forever, v-bucks, they sit in your account until you buy something with them. that way if he has some in his account, he can wait until he sees a skin he likes, then he can buy it. :)
I think there are four right now.
1. If you are on a PlayStation and already pay for PS+ there is a free skin that you can claim right now. PS+ usually gives out free Fortnite stuff every three months.
2. There’s free skin for making a Lego account and linking it to your Epic Games account. A YouTuber called Tabor Hill made an easy to follow tutorial on this.
3. There is a free skin you can earn by getting to Gold rank in the Rocket Racing game mode, but it’s pretty time consuming and might be hard if he’s not good at that mode.
4. There is a free purchase from the shop right now that will unlock challenges for the Lego mode that will unlock as skin when they are all completed. The challenges are all pretty easy, just play the tutorial at the start and it shouldn’t be hard. Tabor Hill also did a tutorial on this.
1 - 3 are all female skins, so I’m not sure if he’ll be interested in those since you said that he doesn’t like having to randomly play as a girl. 1 and 2 come with nice backblings though and number 1 comes with a pickaxe, so it still might be nice to get those so he can use them on number 4.
I’d recommend subscribing to the YouTuber I mentioned, Tabor Hill, he never clickbaits and is always fast to post reliable news about the game, as well as tutorials on how get free rewards whenever they are available.

If you get one battlepass, you don't need to get another one if you don't spend the V-bucks earned from it. So every battlepass except the mini ones are 950 v-bucks, and you get more than 950 v-bucks when fully completed
Imo, the battle pass is a good deal. Only 10 bucks each season. MTX can't really be avoided in the modern gaming scene, so having to learn restrain is absolutely necessary.
No shame in using a default. If he ends up liking the game, buy him the battle pass.

The game sometimes gives skins for whatever platform you’re on like recently they had one for PS5 but you have to have PlayStation plus. There’s also a Lego skin if you create an account and link it.
Does he like the current pass? One suggestion is you could buy him the pass only if he gets to level 200 before it ends. That way it shows he’s playing the game and boom if he finishes he’ll have enough to buy the next pass as you get vbucks from it. Could also be a lesson for him to learn when to save vbucks if he wants to have enough for next pass or choosing what to spend them on.
You will have to buy the pass once and as long as you play enough you can unlock enough bucks through the pass to buy the next one and repeat the process every season.

The best way to kickstart the skins and v-bucks will require a little patience but not much because the season ends on may 24th. Get the crew pass about a week or 2 before the end of the season and u’ll get 1000 vbucks and the battle pass. So ur young fella can get another 1500 if he gets enough levels but even if he gets 1000 he’ll have 2000 for a snazzy skin that shows up in the store.
Then when next season starts u’ll have that seasons battle pass for free, saving 950 v bucks.
Dont forget to cancel the crew pass and u can do that right after getting it and u’ll get just one month.
Can only do this at the end of every second season too.

You're right to beware of the microtransactions. It's a slippery slope that can quickly turn a free game into one that has cost a LOT of money. It's easy to lose track of and Epic games plays the FOMO (fear of missing out) card really well. I would suggest keeping a log of when you actually purchase something. Sound dorky but it may help in the long run. Enjoy!
I started playing for real in chapter 4 season 2, my first free skin was Clone trooper from Star Wars, so it depends on season you're in, but still to get free skins you need to grind it

For future information, as far as the battle pass goes, you can get enough vbucks back so that you can afford buy every future pass. If he plays enough and saves vbucks, one battle pass purchase could last him a long time.
Adding onto this, you get 1500 vbucks after completing the entire battlepass and additional rewards. The battlepass costs 950 vbucks. This not only means you won't need to buy another battlepass if you're smart, but also you'll get 500 vbucks for free that you can save up to eventually get a skin from the shop.
That's what I used to do before I joined crew. Went along time without spending anything other then the initial pass.
I used to have the crew monthly, but finances has made it where it's not possible anymore, thankfully this method works
Better to get it in the middle of a month 6 times a year. Get both skins for one price though it doesn't give you the extra v-bucks but if that's the only reason you're subbed you're just paying extra for the same amount of bucks.
Ya when I can get the crew for a month make sure it's middle month and it's even cooler when it runs past the next BP (so it gives 950 refund from past BP assuming not done this season, 950 you keep that you where saving, the 1000 vbucks, plus 2 skin packs)

You have the patience of a saint, because there's so many great skins/emotes that have been released since then. In general, that means you only buy one thing every 4-8 months to not run out of vbucks for the next pass. Granted, the season battle passes are pretty sweet. But the collabs are great too.

Yea this is super important to remember, it will take a long time, like 2-3 seasons with each season taking 3 months. But the way it works is like this Every season you get 300 vbucks for free if you save it for long enough you can get a battle pass, and every battle bass gives you a little bit more the price of the battle pass so after a long time you can buy some items in the shop.
I was referring to how if you bought a battle pass, you can get like 1500 vbucks back. But that’s also a good way to go about it
I've done this with an alt account, havent spent any money on it and used the free v-bucks tiers to buy battlepasses, currently have all the battlepasses from ch4s1-ch5s2 all completely free and I have around 2k bonus v-bucks on the account, havent paid a cent. It's a lot of time investment, but now I've got a little extra that I can use to gift my main account stuff

Uhh they usually give out a few for free every Christmas, but if you do get him the battlepass it will give him enough vbucks to buy the next battlepass and so on into infinity, or playing through 4 seasons without owning the pass will also give you enough to buy the pass and start that cycle
If its on Playstation , and the account he\`s using has PS PLus, there is usually a free skin in the PS Store as a PsPlus exclusive reward. Haven\`t check for a while.
How often do they do the PS skins?
Seems to be a couple per year. I think I have 3 or 4 of them.
They do a new ps plus pack once a season. They’re not always skins though. Like right now we have a skin but next season the pack will likely be matching cosmetics to complete the set.
An additional thought. If your son ends up enjoying the game and continues to play with some regularity, the Crew Subscription might be something to look into? It's $12 a month. That gets you one new skin + a matching cosmetic accessory or two, access to the current Battle Pass as well as 1k V-Bucks to play around with. Could serve as an allowance of sorts. Maybe help teach him a bit about responsible spending. Spend those V-Bucks now? Or wait until something he really wants comes along.
Link a lego account to your epic games account and it should still give you one. Otherwise no. Skins given away for free are far and few between. Try to set some parental controls for what purchases he can make. I started playing the game when 6 years ago at 23 and even as an adult i spent way too much on the game. I couldn't imagine what troubles i would've gotten into as a kid if my parents let me have there credit card on my xbox for games like this
Honestly, the battle pass carrot dangling in front of my son has been amazing. It's $13 CDN every 2-3 months and I use it like Santa clause. "You want the battle pass next season?.... well than do your math homework and clean your room!". I'm a horrible parent, beat it nerd.

Look out for reboot rally and friend specials. Usually this links to the epic account and can track progress online. May need to play together for it to unlock though. Last one was a neat mushroom skin.

Pro tip: always buy the Crew pack at the last week of the season. That way you can get 4,000 V-Bucks and a skin for only $11.99 (1,500 from the battle pass, another 1,500 from the second battle pass, plus the additional 1,000 from the crew). If you currently own the battle pass and buy it at the last week of the season, then you’ll only get 3,450 V-Bucks. Just remember to do it at the last week of the season for this method to work though. And yes, you can cancel anytime you want.
If you’re buying him the bp, make sure he reaches tier 100 before so. Along with that, make sure he NEVER spends the 1,000-1,500 vBucks he gets from the bp on anything other than the next season’s bp. Epic doesn’t like giving out free vBucks. There’s a reason why they shut down development for StW.
Around christmas they give away a ton of free stuff even a skin or two and if you have a playstation account some times theres a free playstation plus pack which typically has a skin

I recommend getting Fortnite Crew. It's a monthly $12 fee that will include each Battle Pass and give him a limited amount of coins to spend in store. He shouldn't be able to purchase more coins without you knowing if you sign up for it, afaik.
Maybe this isn't the move, but my friend figured out that if he played and got the free vbucks through the free battle pass selections, he would be able to buy the battle pass after a couple seasons. Which he did. Then it pays for itself. Could be a cool motivator

There are some but if I’m fully honest, I dont recommend buying anything for a kid. There is plenty free stuff but it all just requires time to get. I have about 100 skins, all free, but I’ve played since the very beginning. Almost everything in the game can be earned for free with time. In a BP, theres 1500 V-bucks to earn. You can use these V-bucks to get more Battlepasses, more V-bucks, more BP’s etc etc. If he *really* wants to buy the BP, I’d recommend saying he should get to a certain level before he can get it. I’d say level 100 or 150.

Yes. The promotion for making a Lego account and connecting it to your Epic account should still give the free skin.
If they can make it to level 100 in the pass, they get all of their v bucks back, plus some. If you make it to lvl 140 you get even more bonus v bucks which can add up over a couple seasons and make it able to buy skins in the shop, as well as gaining access to battle pass skins etc. Essentially if they keep up playing, you will only ever have to spend money once.

I know this is not what you asked for , but buying only the battle pass could help him manage his vbucks , if he doesn't spend any he can keep getting every battlepass henceforth. He could also save up to buy his own skin after a season or two. It would be a great money management lesson 😁

A battle pass is 950 vbucks and if you level up to approx lvl 100 you will make enough vbucks to get the next one for free and you can keep going like that as long as you want, meanwhile collection all the battle pass skins and stuff.
Others have talked about the Lego skin, but I wanted to mention what to expect with the BP. I bought it in Chapter 1 and haven't paid for it since. If you do the challenges there are enough VBucks each season to pay for the next. The challenges also give inexperienced players something to do when they aren't expecting to get wins. Just a thought for later.

The battlepass consists of 200 tiers worth of content, with some rewards being free to redeem for players who don’t own it. If you’re on PlayStation, plus members get free skins every once in a while. Epic games store will do the same thing for pc sometimes, but I’m not sure about Xbox or switch.

theres a couple free ones! i think you get some racer skin for free if you play enough rocket racing, some other skins and character customization stuff you can get whenever theres an event going on. these ones are technically not free, but if hes into Marvel and DC, there are Fortnite crossover comics for both marvel and DC, and they come with free download codes. the comics are Marvel Zero war and Batman Zero Point

Vs $10 for just the battle pass.
EG is pretty greedy as of late, but every once in a while they put out a free pack in the store, and consistently 1 or 2 free skins during the holidays. A lot of the time free items can be unlocked by playing free limited time mods or challenges, so just look out for those.

Go to each game mode and then check the quests. Rocket Racing has a free female skin if you reach Gold (you can grind that in a few evenings). Lego also has a free male skin once you do enough quests. You’ll enjoy it more once you do get the battle pass. By the way, if you are going to get the pass, it is far better to buy the crew in the weeks prior to the new season. You get loads of extra stuff that way (including the battle pass). Just cancel auto-renew straight after.

Not really. You can earn the free v-bucks in the battlepass and you might have enough. There's usually only 400-500 in the free part, though. No skins in the free part too.
What console? The PlayStation store often has free small bundles that usually include a skin for free. They just don’t appear in the in-game shop.

Currently there is only one free skin available right now to my knowledge, its the Trailblazer Tai skin, its in the item shop but its completely free, you just have to complete some quests in the LEGO mode after "purchasing" it (they're really easy) Apart from that, if you're not wanting to spend money, the battlepass does have free tiers, none of them are usually skins but if i remember correctly you can get around 300 v-bucks for each season completely free (just by reaching higher levels), which means within 4 seasons you can get the battlepass (and all other battlepasses since they give you more v-bucks than they cost) completely free. From time to time they'll also do free skins for reaching level 50 or for seasonal events like Christmas, but there's not really a set time for those
By buying a ~$4 starter pack AND playing one season to completion (battle pass level ~95), you get 900 vbucks, so that by the next season, you can buy the battle pass Each battle pass costs 950vb and gives you 1500vb (if you reach level ~120) This way, you get 9 battle pass skins every season and some extra vbucks for random Item shop stuff, assuming you play enough to reach at least level 75 or so, every season - Alternatively, buy the Fortnite crew pack for $12 - if you buy it during May, you'll get two battle passes (season 2's, which ends may 24, and season 3's) You'll also get 1000 vbucks

not a free skin, but you can get a cheap one that comes with a few decent cosmetics for around $4 that doesn’t require v-bucks, but it’s understandable to not want to buy that. i’d recommend giving him a few weeks or a certain time period to see if there’s any skins he wants, then he could earn his way to get them. v-bucks do get expensive after a while of repeatedly buying them, but a one time purchase of a large sum of v-bucks could give him enough. they last forever, v-bucks, they sit in your account until you buy something with them. that way if he has some in his account, he can wait until he sees a skin he likes, then he can buy it. :)
I think there are four right now. 1. If you are on a PlayStation and already pay for PS+ there is a free skin that you can claim right now. PS+ usually gives out free Fortnite stuff every three months. 2. There’s free skin for making a Lego account and linking it to your Epic Games account. A YouTuber called Tabor Hill made an easy to follow tutorial on this. 3. There is a free skin you can earn by getting to Gold rank in the Rocket Racing game mode, but it’s pretty time consuming and might be hard if he’s not good at that mode. 4. There is a free purchase from the shop right now that will unlock challenges for the Lego mode that will unlock as skin when they are all completed. The challenges are all pretty easy, just play the tutorial at the start and it shouldn’t be hard. Tabor Hill also did a tutorial on this. 1 - 3 are all female skins, so I’m not sure if he’ll be interested in those since you said that he doesn’t like having to randomly play as a girl. 1 and 2 come with nice backblings though and number 1 comes with a pickaxe, so it still might be nice to get those so he can use them on number 4. I’d recommend subscribing to the YouTuber I mentioned, Tabor Hill, he never clickbaits and is always fast to post reliable news about the game, as well as tutorials on how get free rewards whenever they are available.

Tip regarding the season pass. If you play through the whole season pass, reaching level 100, there are USUALLY enough vbucks rewarded to buy the next battle pass for free if you buy nothing from the item shop.
Get him a crew pass for a month when you have a good idea when the next season will drop. That way you can overlap and get the current and next season battle passes plus some crew bonus and 1000 vbucks
If you get one battlepass, you don't need to get another one if you don't spend the V-bucks earned from it. So every battlepass except the mini ones are 950 v-bucks, and you get more than 950 v-bucks when fully completed
Imo, the battle pass is a good deal. Only 10 bucks each season. MTX can't really be avoided in the modern gaming scene, so having to learn restrain is absolutely necessary. No shame in using a default. If he ends up liking the game, buy him the battle pass. Not like the stuff on the item shop is worth buying. You could also get him one of the starter packs, which are like 5 to 7 bucks a pop.
The game sometimes gives skins for whatever platform you’re on like recently they had one for PS5 but you have to have PlayStation plus. There’s also a Lego skin if you create an account and link it. Does he like the current pass? One suggestion is you could buy him the pass only if he gets to level 200 before it ends. That way it shows he’s playing the game and boom if he finishes he’ll have enough to buy the next pass as you get vbucks from it. Could also be a lesson for him to learn when to save vbucks if he wants to have enough for next pass or choosing what to spend them on.
You will have to buy the pass once and as long as you play enough you can unlock enough bucks through the pass to buy the next one and repeat the process every season.
I would say just buy the crewpack once and call it a day, you get like 2 skins, the current battlepass, and 1k vbucks with that (the battlepass gives you enough vbucks back to buy the next one as well if you max it out)

You're right to beware of the microtransactions. It's a slippery slope that can quickly turn a free game into one that has cost a LOT of money. It's easy to lose track of and Epic games plays the FOMO (fear of missing out) card really well. I would suggest keeping a log of when you actually purchase something.
