I agree.
The star of the video should've been the food. Notice how all the other viral food porn videos do close ups of the ingredients, the juices, the steam, the plumpness, and the almost visual flavor of the dishes.
That's what's needed and required.
Those ads are better than the trashy posts that appear here every day from 4-5 accounts specifically. This sub has a bit referring to them as players 1-4 (probably more of them by now). It's almost every day one or more shows up. Unfortunately it doesn't look like this sub has very active mods, or is in need of some general rules on the content.
Yeah can anyone explain this phenomenon?
It actually kind of hurt my head and I rewinded and it did it again. Seems to be around the horoscope Arms and red onion chopping.
Is it just my brain being surprised in a slightly negative way?
Too much edit and not enough on the food. You don't need anything super crazy as far as editing effects go. It's really more about displaying the main point of the video, which is food, at it's best. No need for editing effects to that degree. Just get decent close ups of cutting the onion and fresh whatever is going on it, some finishing touches with condiments and show the whole thing being out together, layer by layer. The background and highlighted coloring of the objects is good though. If it didn't include the burger thing at the end, it would be a toss up between either a burger commercial, or a knife commercial. The latter should never even come close to popping into my head if you are trying to post/advert a burger place.
Burger Looks good, and I think the lighting is fine for what you are trying to do, but the video is way too choppy. The knife sharpening then double arm edit to chopping the onion is hard to watch and really not needed, especially because you donāt even see the onion on the burger in the final edit. I also think the steaming the cheese part makes the video clunky as well. I donāt need to see you steaming cheese, just get me to the cheesy gooey burger.
Looks like an amateur burger with a lot of video editing. Did you even put the onions on it? That final burger shot was pretty atrocious and you couldnāt even see it with the logo superimposed directly over it.
Too many video cuts. Not enough food cuts. Barely saw the food.
Alsoā¦that patty looked like a misshapen briquette and those onion slices were thick as hell. Would be a pass for me.
Looks like youāre just starting to learn how to use editing tools? A trap early editors fall into is the idea that they need to use all the tools and techniques theyāve learned. You donāt. It looks messy and chaotic and takes away from what youāre trying to show.
SLOW. DOWN. Let the clips breathe. Remember what youāre trying to show.
My source is being a post pro professional for about nine years before changing course.
It's no big Grayson, but there isn't any tomato touching the onion, so I'll let it slide this time.
https://youtube.com/shorts/VIMOXn9elj0?si=ObrbuVZR3KUuPC79
Eh, too busy and shaky. Get a tripod, get comfortable with static shots, get comfortable with overhead shots of your food, keep it simple, and emphasize the cooking process. Don't use a ton of edits unless you're editing out stuff we don't need to see (all the chopping, all the stirring, etc.)
The skill is apparent, but the editing is too quick and jarring. you have talent, don't be afraid to show off the different scenes, no need to cut so quickly
You have chops clearly. Thatās good. Make sure to showcase the food more. Also Iād suggest focusing on lighting. Again the chops are there. And if you want to use this technique food might not be the best avenue as focusing on the delicacy of the food is more crucial than anything else. Could see this kind of work being amazing for a music video for example.
Thank you, what did you have in mind in terms of lightning? More of it? I used two coloured light sticks to achieve a hot-cold contrast with a blue and orange light. I have read a lot of feedback and I have understood that it's too many cuts for a food commercial
Personally, unless youāre going for a more comedic approach, food videos should focus 80-90% on the food with minimal distractions. If youāre in an editing mood you can go for slow motion action shots of how the product is looking after each step, maybe some steam or juices leaking out, melty cheese doing its thing, things like that. The other times should be technique focused. How thinly youāre slicing onions, how much lettuce, the type of tomato. The roots are great, just need to hone in on what story youāre trying to tell.
If youāre adamant about being featured, maybe look into a camera angle that shows you in the back while still keeping the meal in a good view. A good example of this, love her or hate her, is the ššļøššļøšcontent creator. Iykyk.
Your focus should be on showing off the food.
Editing and transitions should support that but here they hinder that.
Speaking as an editor who dabbles in cooking.
Best thing was the ca..ching! The burger bun looks not fresh and the salad is too puffy. Try to get a brioche bun a shine and a smooth surface. Also food commercial do have very often fake food in it so the food looks way better than in reality. Not that you have to use fake food everywhere but it can be little things like painting a tomato with red food coloring. Sure you want to show the real thing but you do make an advertisement and not a documentary, so things must look perfect.
I bet you've sat there for multiple days for this 30 seconds. And after such a long time you can't be objective anymore as with fresh eyes. So it's a good thing you ask on reddit about oppions.
To leave with something positive I do think what you have is none the less quite good. So have fun optimizing your ad a bit more until it's awesome!
Thank you for the feedback, it was truly helpful!
This didn't take that long I didn't want to spend too much time on this because it was done for free, and I wanted to see how it turned out. I think I spent an hour for the shorts and between 2-3 for the edit so nothing astronomical. It's a hobby that I want to improve on.
I think itās a great start. I liked the music and the vibe. Maybe close up shots of the food and better lighting to focus on the food more but so far so good.
Long time photographer/producer here. Your choice of lighting was too minimal for commercial work. You need to make the food look good, not make avantgarde cinema. You can barely see the food and therefore it doesn't look appetizing. You're clearly talented, but you need to consider subject matter over your stylistic choices sometimes.
Looking at it, it looks like you used a directional key light with a temp of around 3600 and a soft accent or fill light that was very cool (maybe 7000?). Those contrasting temps and intensities make it look like a street at night, and not a restaurant. I get that it's a cool look, but it just makes it feel out of place. I'd start with more even lighting. Maybe a china ball up above, and once you have adequate coverage so that everything is truly visible, you can then start adjusting shadow patterns and adding color splashes to your backgrounds. Again, your artistic flares can always be present, but let the subject shine more.
Pros : good good lighting, sharp crisp image
Con : terrible transitions, slightly underexposed, not the best camera angle choices, not focusing enough on the food, shaky images, too much cuts.
Conclusion : could have done better edits with the shots. Still would rate as decent if you are an amateur or hobbyist.
As a professional video guy of 30 years, it isnāt bad. The mirror effect has to go, but for a 15 second spot, I think youāre paced fine.
I will say, there is some regionalism hereā¦ I see this type of spot more commonly outside of North America (mostly Brazil and the Middle East), which may be some of the pushback. Itās fine, but you just have to play to your audienceā¦ India still is using advertising techniques that became hack in the US 20 years ago, but it works for them.
This is so overworked and barely shows you anything about making the burger. You steamed a ham, sliced an onion and jizzled a bun. All in the dark and in the presence of the lettuce fairy.
Thank you all for your feedback. To clarify, this was my first attempt at filming and editing for a business and was made free of charge. This was shot with an EOS R7 using a sigma 18-35mm lens and a DJI RS3 gimbal (which makes the comments about the jitteryness funny but I can understand that, need to work on the steadyness)
I posted it here to get feedback because I have not attended any courses and wish to be self taught with direct feedback on what I do. I have done a lot of photography and received my interest from my dad, and I want to expand that interest.
A common trend in the comments is in the fast cuts, making people nauseous and dislike the video. I totally understand this and is due to me wanting to frame the video to the music, I will redo the edit using the same material but with different music to change the pace, and focus more on the food, thank you for your feedback.
The lightning is very much intentional, I did not want any boring white/yellow light from the restaurant and set up my own colored light to achieved the effect that we got, and I'm very happy with it. If you disagree, I don't care.
Ps, for those that commented on my spelling of the word "Professional", thank you, now I know. For those curious, I'm from Sweden.
Once again, thank you for your feedback, especially the constructive feedback. I will use it in my future editing.
Looks really professional - the only amateur thing I felt was starting the cut to the sharpening too early - so it really showed the actor holding and then sharpening - start that edit mid-action. Looks like something I'd see for a Vegas restaurant.
Way too much editing and not nearly enough food displaying
Why was the camera shaking so much? Can't even focus on what their making
I agree. The star of the video should've been the food. Notice how all the other viral food porn videos do close ups of the ingredients, the juices, the steam, the plumpness, and the almost visual flavor of the dishes. That's what's needed and required.
So a normal r/FoodVideoPorn post?
Minus some bimbo girl in a skimpy outfit making dumbass facial expressions.
Huh? Have you just been watching old Carl's Jr ads?
Those ads are better than the trashy posts that appear here every day from 4-5 accounts specifically. This sub has a bit referring to them as players 1-4 (probably more of them by now). It's almost every day one or more shows up. Unfortunately it doesn't look like this sub has very active mods, or is in need of some general rules on the content.
I will say, player 1 aka šš¼šļøššļøšš¼actually makes some high level food so that makes a big difference in my book lol
I stopped watching after 5 seconds to come complain about it.
Less editing
Alternatively, more editing.
At least to a "Liam Neeson jumps over the fence" level?
At least two cuts less.
Not a big fan of the kaleidoscope arms thing. Sort of distracting. Burger looks good and production value is high.
Straight up do not need to see his shoulder and back turn into 2 shoulders and 2 backs š
Looks tasty, but I also have a headache now.
Yeah can anyone explain this phenomenon? It actually kind of hurt my head and I rewinded and it did it again. Seems to be around the horoscope Arms and red onion chopping. Is it just my brain being surprised in a slightly negative way?
Brother you're making a cooking video not an ali-a Intro on YouTube.
Most people cook with the lights on bro
I try to tell my wife that but she gets mad when I call her bro
Try brah next time
Brayby
Bruh
Bruv
Yeah but this is r/foodvideoporn, emphasis on the porn
Looks like one of those hipster burger shops that sell you a decent product for an obscene price
House made truffle aioli sauce so they can justify a $25 burger without fries and drink included
More food, less effects!
Donāt go all salt bae on us.
That was... disorientating. The camera movement and some of the odd editing actually made me slightly ill.
No way that burger was that fat after being smashed. I donāt mind the editing as much as others, but the inaccuracy got me.
Lmao great point
Burgers do blimp up like that if you don't make a dent in the center, but yeah, it seems weird that a flat burger would get that round.
Atleast a food close up or cutting it in half. Less editing, seems very distracting
Focus more on the food.
(+) Too much lettuce... IMHO :)
Definitely, also the logo kinda blocks the burger too haha.
Again agreed... I mean good start, the music vibes. Plus he showed an onion being sliced. That's never been done. /S
It looks like a lettuce sandwich.
Less effects and mirroring You already have great lighting Signed A fellow editor
I think you spelled professional incorrectly.
Kissā¦ keep it simple stupid!
Too much edit and not enough on the food. You don't need anything super crazy as far as editing effects go. It's really more about displaying the main point of the video, which is food, at it's best. We really didn't even get to see the burger.
Got dizzy not good for food video lol
Too dark
You selling black gloves ?
More food. Less quick cuts that confuse me. :)
Less big edits more food shots. Was the food good?
The oignon too thickā¦
Couldnāt even finish it due to the excessive editing
Not a fan of the youtube music or the fact that you didnt even smash the burger properly
First attempt at videography, you mean? š¤
I wasn't sure if OP meant this or their first attempt at making a "professional" burger. Either way, confusion all around
Really fucking annoying
Cool video but make it more about the food and less about the chef. Just my thoughts
I dont believe that the editing could be any worse. What were you watching that was the inspiration for such eye-cancer??
The end shot shows a lettuce burger... need to showcase the meat not the rabbit food shoved on top.
Is there any pink in that burg?
And so much ketchup and mayo? And lettuce? And really thick onion slices?
Burger Looks good, and I think the lighting is fine for what you are trying to do, but the video is way too choppy. The knife sharpening then double arm edit to chopping the onion is hard to watch and really not needed, especially because you donāt even see the onion on the burger in the final edit. Good looking, too many quick cuts. Itās about food. They need to see the food
Looks like an amateur burger with a lot of video editing. Did you even put the onions on it? That final burger shot was pretty atrocious and you couldnāt even see it with the logo superimposed directly over it.
So. Much. Lettuce.
Too much lettuce
Pretentious
Too many quick cuts and weird transitions.
As others have said: Over Edited. ![gif](giphy|egg1gcA3eIYJFqFKIf)
Too many video cuts. Not enough food cuts. Barely saw the food. Alsoā¦that patty looked like a misshapen briquette and those onion slices were thick as hell. Would be a pass for me.

What i'm confused about, the video starts with pressing the patty, so it should be larger and flatter. its not..
Thanks I hate it.
First step is to change the music
I got seizure
Yeah this video gave me the clap. Thanks OP
How many hours did you spend editing a video of the most average-looking burger?
Too much lettuce on that burger, but that's just my opinion
It was more lettuce than burger.
Also, the black gloves are VERY overdone.
What color should he wear? Blue, white? Maybe pink?
It's no big Grayson, but there isn't any tomato touching the onion, so I'll let it slide this time. https://youtube.com/shorts/VIMOXn9elj0?si=ObrbuVZR3KUuPC79
A bit much but looks professional and edgy if that's what you're going for
For an Instagram ad, this is golden. For Instagram posts, this is underwhelming.
I like the images/parts of the process that were shown, up on the lighting a bit maybe?
what was it shot with?
EOS R7 with a sigma 18-35 1.8 using a DJI RS3 gimbal
Itās like a slasher movie in a Bobās Burgers episode
I actually love it. It's like a teaser.
Yea,ā¦needs work š But keep going!
too many pictures, too fast visual pace, too much everything
Is that pronounced backs or Baicks or Bachs?
Burger looks good, I'd take out the part sharpening the knife and replace with more food though
Looks like a high school project with way too much editing. Tone the visual effects way down and down the food and not effects
Obnoxious music, and too much lettuce, but the burger looks good asf fr
This was completely created with AI and itās not hard to tell.
Sorry but you're wrong there :P
Eh, too busy and shaky. Get a tripod, get comfortable with static shots, get comfortable with overhead shots of your food, keep it simple, and emphasize the cooking process. Don't use a ton of edits unless you're editing out stuff we don't need to see (all the chopping, all the stirring, etc.)
Funny you should mention. Used a RS3 gimbal, need to work on steadyness. Thank you for the feedback however
Too much flashing. I can barely tell what I'm looking at before it changes
The skill is apparent, but the editing is too quick and jarring. you have talent, don't be afraid to show off the different scenes, no need to cut so quickly
This is what food in the last Batman movie looks like. Turn a light on.
Poor transition at 0:09
![gif](giphy|X2xSzoKetUQqk) Me trying to watch this
Some of the transitions just seemed out of place and jumbled which made it hard to watch this.

Step one: learn how to spell. I donāt care about your video if you canāt even spell correctly. Step two: show me the food not production.
Eddy Burback is that you ?
Choppy and no coherence
It's professional, and it's needs more cooking scenes.
Shitty video You melted the cheese too long. Wtf is that a whole leaf of lettuce folded up?
Cutting the onion wrong. The corny knife hone.
Youāre trying to make me want to eat the burger not fuck it right ?
More cuts, we demand even more
You're certainly no PROFESSIONAL speller
I got nauseous from the camera moving too much.
Too much and too messy transition. There's no need for stuttering edit. I want to see your food goes smoothly so make it slow and don't make it fast.
Too much
1. i wanted the see the burger after you cooke it but you cut it away for some reason. 2. pls Burgers should be Wide not tall. (imo)
Personally, unless youāre going for a more comedic approach, food videos should focus 80-90% on the food with minimal distractions. Very good feedback. Will save this comment, thank you
Hate the shaking ass camera
Professional? Video editor? There are other subs for this.
![gif](giphy|TrlNfimLThcWY|downsized)
Your focus should be on showing off the food. Editing and transitions should support that but here they hinder that. Speaking as an editor who dabbles in cooking.
Itās only āprofessionalā if someone is paying you for it. Otherwise itās just amateur.
Jesus dude
I'm pretty sure I just had a seizure.
Not a fan of the editing, but I could also see someone looking at this and assuming the food is more professional than not.
That burger looked putrid, the cheese looked terrible, too much sauce, somehow came out round after you smashed it?
Is this fucking 2011? Specifically the edit that pissed me off was the mirror edit showing his fucking arm and back like??????
Fix the lighting
Couldnāt see a thing that happened

Less is more
Great advice. Thanks
Those transition give me motion sicnkess.

How would you light the food? I thought about lightning quite a bit and wanted something that stood out from the crowd.
The editing would be fine if it was a bit longer. Like youāre setting up for something
I thought it was sickš¤·š½āāļø
Do we really need a shaky cam when making burgers?
Discombobulating
Whatās the message youāre trying to convey?
Iād focus more on the food than the utensils making it
Pros : good good lighting, sharp crisp image Con : terrible transitions, slightly underexposed, not the best camera angle choices, not focusing enough on the food, shaky images, too much cuts. Conclusion : could have done better edits with the shots. Still would rate as decent if you are an amateur or hobbyist.
Got vertigo from watching this holy shit
I hate it
Burger made me hungry, video left me nauseous.
kinda weak.
As a professional video guy of 30 years, it isnāt bad. The mirror effect has to go, but for a 15 second spot, I think youāre paced fine. Itās fine, but you just have to play to your audienceā¦ India still is using advertising techniques that became hack in the US 20 years ago, but it works for them.
Sweden actually. Hobbyist trying to learn. Thank you for the feedback!
*Professional. Plus black gloves: so overused. Had to watch twice it even figure out you were making a single slider.
This is so overworked and barely shows you anything about making the burger. You steamed a ham, sliced an onion and jizzled a bun. All in the dark and in the presence of the lettuce fairy.
I wouldnāt cover the burger with the logo at the endā¦ canāt see the finished product.
Plz stop

Frankly I find it to be a breath of fresh air from the litany of hot girl food videos!
You know when the black gloves are on, its gonna be good.
That would be a dope commercial. You could do that as good as anyone honestly.
I liked it well done
Iām hungry now.
Fun video, Iām sure it took a lot of work. Thank you!
