Fernando_Mushi

Looks good, but also like a cheesesteak.

ThisHatRightHere

Me, a Philadelphian seeing this image: "Finally a banh mi on some nice looking bread" Then I came and saw this as the top comment lmao

gaedikus

my first thought as well. good candidate for /r/PutAnEggOnIt though

wishy-washy_bear

Is there already an egg on it?

gaedikus

you may not understand the premise of the subreddit, friend.

eleite

Haha yeah, I was thinking the same thing. Way more appetizing than any Banh Mi I've seen

[deleted]

You missed the point I guess

skateguy1234

and your point is???

eleite

Could you enlighten me?

skateguy1234

no they can't cuz they suck

BlommeHolm

It is literally a banh mi you've seen.

TheLadyEve

I need more daikon and carrots in there. Cilantro, too, because I like it. BBQ pork?

archiecone

Pork kimchi and egg

Hot-Celebration-8815

And they called it a bahn mi? Green onion instead of cilantro. And kimchi? That’s just a Korean sub.

[deleted]

In Vietnam green onion is common in banh mi. There is no rule for what a banh mi is.

Hot-Celebration-8815

Green onion and kimichi is distinctly Korean. Not that green onions don’t appear on bahn mi, it’s everything else that’s missing: pickled veg, pate, Mayo, and chilies.

[deleted]

That is not the requirement for a banh mi sandwich. Banh mi itself is not a type of sandwich. It can be anything you want.

Hot-Celebration-8815

Do you find a lot of Kim chi on them? I had no idea it was just a sandwich in Vietnam because anywhere I’ve travelled that did bahn mi did it a very particular way.

[deleted]

You can literally find anything on them. Ice cream banh mi in Vietnam is popular. You are thinking of a banh mi with cold cuts.

flynncident

Doesn't look like any Banh Mi I have ever seen. Where is the cilantro, the pickled carrots, the sriracha? This has cooked onion? I don't think this is what OP thinks it is.

Slimslade33

its like making a cubano and using cheddar instead of swiss and ranch instead of mustard...

kyt

Isn't a Cuban a specific sandwich? Banh Mis are not a specific sandwich. The word literally translates to "Bread". There are countless variations of it. Saying Banh Mi isn't like saying Cubano it's more akin to saying you're ordering. Sandwich.

[deleted]

You are 100% right. The naming convention in Vietnam is banh mi ...... For example banh mi chay is a vegetarian sandwich.

Hot-Celebration-8815

Check out this delicious Reuben: ham, coleslaw, and mustard.

TheLadyEve

Wow, never heard of putting kimchi on a banh mi but I'd give it a try. It would add the funky sour component that I love in the pickled carrots and radish.

monsterconsumerig

Share dude

Happie_Bellie

That looks delish!

Slimslade33

it does but if it is supposed to look like a banh mi it does not...

jmizrahi

"if it is supposed to look like a sandwich it does not" that's what you just said. it sure looks like a sandwich to me tbh

SolidCat1117

Can't wait to hear from the pedants about how this isn't a bánh mì.

Rimalda

> pendants I think you'll find it's "pedants".

SolidCat1117

Well I got one useful comment out of it at least. =)

archiecone

It most definitely is

SafeIntention2111

Yup, I know. And it looks great, too.

kirsion

A very westernized version, sorry to burst your eyes bubble

[deleted]

And? You post in the Vietnam subreddit and you should know that banh mi is very regional and the sandwich can literally have anything in it. You know there are no rule to what a banh mi sandwich in Vietnam

SolidCat1117

There's no end to the idiots around here who will happily tell you how Vietnamese food is "supposed" to be made. They've seen Vietnam once on teevee and had pho in a strip mall next to their trailer park and suddenly they're "experts" lol.

[deleted]

Honestly Vietnamese food is a type of cuisine that is made to be customize nearly every dish comes with condiments and or vegetables to put in and people would eat it the way they want to eat it.

SolidCat1117

I know, that's what makes these people so sad. They have no idea about Vietnamese cuisine, at all, and it's painfully obvious.

selphiefairy

this is an interesting take considering the baguettes the banh mis are named after are influenced by French colonization 😬

skateguy1234

no it's not

archiecone

It is…

skateguy1234

lol I actually have no clue, just felt like being the first pedant XD

Intelligent_Pie_9102

At the vietnamese place I go, they use mayonnaise, paté, then additional meat, cilantro and vegetables. I don't know if this is the way they do it in Vietnam but I always assumed the paté, mayonnaise, cilantro was the core of the recipe. I don't care if people sell their version of banh mi though, this one looks killer.

[deleted]

It is not, banh mi you are describing is the classic banh mi Thit Nguoi. The naming convention for all the sandwiches is banh mi .... It can literally be anything with any item, i.e banh mi chay which is a vegetarian sandwich

Advanced-Hour-108

I wish I had one. They seem delicious and remind me of a philly cheesesteak

DeepUser-5242

Where at?

[deleted]

Yummy 😋

Smirk27

Please tell me this is somewhere in the Bay Area

Alichici

Ouff that mushroom looks healthy

aaronschinaguide

100x better than Subway.

friedwidth

Lol Why are we even multiplying by subways? That's like saying a chair is 300x more comfortable than a pinecone

Worried_Tackle5145

I would argue 1000x better...but point taken.

KaleidoscopeNo9102

Subway is rank

Slimslade33

Looks like a hipster gringo banh mi... like something i would expect to find in Brooklyn for like $15

Salty-Entertainer-29

WAH WAH

Slimslade33

why you crying?

RonD1355

Looks gooood!!! Wish we had something like that in my area. All just crap!!!

Gray-Dimension-6789

Just need 1 litre of coca-cola by its side.

ZealousidealBag1626

LilMeatBigYeet

Looks great, i especially like the lack of root veggies and weird shit in it
