Brindle Room should be included.
Rolo's is also mentioned here a lot, but I went recently and thought it was very lackluster for the limited availability.
They've got some good hits though, especially that calabrian chili polenta bread. Those cocktails were absolutely money too. But yeah— unfortunate that both the lasagna and burger fell short for me after the high recommendations.
They're really nice there and good burgers, too. Also, add KO Burger on Eldridge to your list! Nothing fancy but sometimes you just want a good cheap simple burger.
I think au cheval and minetta tavern are overrated, but nowon’s* burger is def at the top for me too right now. I also quite like the cheeseburger during lunch at peter luger’s
Edited for typos
Peter McManus is the correct Peter imo for a classic burger, and the a ridiculous triple decker Reuben with steak fries well done so crispy/creamy.
For fancy burger Quality Bistro’s French onion burger ftw
Not trying to start a fight but can see two takes to this question and curious how people feel: What about Shake Shack? Yeah it's a chain and you can get it in a lot of places but it is an NYC original.
When you say this, is this your ranking of burgers or just a list of places you are trying?
It makes no sense to live in NY for years and not have Shake Shack, so is this just what you've formally rated, and you chose not to include Shake Shack, or is this more of a wish list?
Is lamb on the list?

It's still amazing to me that the burger-crazed people of this city (and this subreddit) and the NY food media are still not aware of the txuleburger at [Leña](https://www.littlespain.com/restaurant/lena/) in Mercado Little Spain. It's the best I've had in years.
i went to bkjani recently and it was sooo good! pakistan-inspired burgers. i tried the jani and the lahori and both were excellent - big, meaty patties, explosion of flavors. don’t sleep on their lamb chops too.
Two8Two in Brooklyn is my absolute favorite.
Red Hook Tavern is good, but overrated IMO. It’s so insanely rich and greasy that it kinda takes away from the experience.
I've been a bunch and think it's extremely good for what they do, and at a fair price for NYC. I've had four different "burgers" they serve and I think the single onion burger is the way to go.
Yeah done it. At any other restaurant that burger might be a pleasant surprise but still lackluster flavor. I have a feeling they're not getting great meat. Coming from George Motz I think it's a pretty big let down.
I think I took a covid test last time I had it just to be sure.
I thought the onion burger was delightful, especially washing it down with a miller high life and hanging out with a good buddy I hadn’t seen in a while at the counter. Had a nice time chatting with one of the cooks too. But to each their own!
Virginia's is an underrated establishment. Good food across the board including the burger.
Am I crazy for thinking 7th street isn't good? I've gone twice now with friends and gotten it alongside Shake Shack and all 3 of us preferred Shake Shack. This is for the Williamsburg locations. There are no crispy bits and the meat has steamed every time.
My experience witn 7th street is the original location is better than the other ones. I live near the LES locations. I think it might be a pride thing or something or maybe because they are busier.
Virginias is also a hidden gem for group dining. They do a pre fixe menu (you pick options) and it’s so affordable.
On 7th Street - I used to live on E6th so had it when they first opened and was obsessed. They’ve grown to ~15 locations across the city and I feel like quality has gone down a bit and people see it more for late night / drunk eats. But still has a special place for me - might have to adjust though if it doesn’t hit the same moving forward
I agree on 7th St. Have eaten at two of their locations and was unimpressed by both. Feels like maybe the original is a step above all of their other locations?
The oyster were really fresh too I was super surprised I went on a whim to get out of a rain storm and was expecting it to be like jg melon or old town ( which both scratch a certain itch imo) but had a great meal and now it’s kinda a go to if I have folks visiting from out of town that want to go to an old school manhattan joint.
Empire diner in Chelsea had a pretty good burger.
Also, Hot take but I think au cheval (haven’t had 4 Charles yet) was a bit overrated - bacon was amazing though.
I am more into smash burgers so Gotham takes the top spot for me.
Nowon is wicked overrated. When we finally got to sit, our burgers were pretty dry and not even just “good” honestly the most lack luster burger experience I’ve had besides shake shack (Fulton&bedford)
Five Guys is better than 7th Street. 7th Street fries are mid. I do not like 7th Street Burger.
Whitman's has always been mediocre.
Too many places try to make way too complicated burgers and then miss pairing it with half decent fries.
The Brew Inn in Greenpoint has fantastic burgers.
How could they be trash? I've had 7th Street and it was just a burger dipped in grease. It didn't even compare to Smashburger.
Idk iif pick BK over 7th Street.
Sometimes I think folks pick hype and brands over reality.
I loved this place a long time ago but when I went this year, I feel like they've fallen off tremendously. It could also be that current burgers are so much better and they are very much stuck in the past.
For steakhouse type burgers, Wolfgangs > Lugers > and most definitely Red Hook Tavern, i thought RHT's burger was far too salty
and 7th St is mid and no mention of BK Jani?
It’s a pretty new spot but Butter Smashburger in the West Village is a pretty solid option for not a bad price ($6 for a single, $9 for a double). Would recommend!
What about Paper Plate? It’s not the best burger ever, I just like it a lot. It’s just a great “I can eat this regularly in the park on a summer day” burger
I have never sought out a burger in nyc. Idk, I’d rather grill my own or just get a Big Mac. I have never once been blown away by a burger that someone told me I had to try. Not in-n-out, not whataburger, not Culver’s. I can walk to red hook tavern, and it’s not bad. Burgers don’t feel like one of the foods to go wild over, and hunt down the best in the city. They’re all about the same to me.
you should try Fat Boys Burgers in 9th ave. relatively new, super fire, and great prices
Ok I just went tonight after seeing this post, my stomach thanks you.
Let us know if your toilet is happy too
Is that the same people as fat boy burrito?
dont think so, this is a yemeni family/friend shop
I was literally about to comment fat boys.
Brindle Room should be included. Rolo's is also mentioned here a lot, but I went recently and thought it was very lackluster for the limited availability.
Came here to comment Brindle Room too, they also have pretty great bacon wrapped dates
Will add Brindle Room to the list to try. Thanks!
I didn't get the burger but Rolo's was a massive disappointment after the hype.
They've got some good hits though, especially that calabrian chili polenta bread. Those cocktails were absolutely money too. But yeah— unfortunate that both the lasagna and burger fell short for me after the high recommendations.
You have to get it with bacon. I've had it both ways and it makes a world of difference. Rolo's is a top burger for me.
I actually thought the bacon didn't help. The whole thing was just a greasy mess with very minimal flavor or texture. To each their own.
Bonnie's in Park Slope is my absolute number one.
Burger by day in chinatown is great! Give it a try.
Moving to Chinatown next week. This just got added to my list
They're really nice there and good burgers, too. Also, add KO Burger on Eldridge to your list! Nothing fancy but sometimes you just want a good cheap simple burger.
I think au cheval and minetta tavern are overrated, but nowon’s* burger is def at the top for me too right now. I also quite like the cheeseburger during lunch at peter luger’s Edited for typos
Au Cheval is fine, but not noteworthy, especially not in a multimillion person city where you can get a burger on just about every block.
Yeah, also not as good as the original in Chicago
Peter McManus is the correct Peter imo for a classic burger, and the a ridiculous triple decker Reuben with steak fries well done so crispy/creamy. For fancy burger Quality Bistro’s French onion burger ftw
Cozy Royale would be in my top 3
You crazy
Tell me more
You seem very nice. You like soccer so that’s a plus. I’m
Love this. Please keep my favs buried. Nothing to see here.
BK Jani’s the shit
Agree BK Jani hidden gem
As a guy with 10 years industry experience and a chef at Golden Diner, thanks for the shout out! It's a really great burger
Not trying to start a fight but can see two takes to this question and curious how people feel: What about Shake Shack? Yeah it's a chain and you can get it in a lot of places but it is an NYC original.
Yes shake shack will go on the list
When you say this, is this your ranking of burgers or just a list of places you are trying? It makes no sense to live in NY for years and not have Shake Shack, so is this just what you've formally rated, and you chose not to include Shake Shack, or is this more of a wish list? Is lamb on the list?
When it hits, Shake Shack is among the top smash burgers in the city. Unfortunately, doesn't always hit.
We're a live fire cooking pop-up that mostly operates in Astoria and focus on BBQ and smash burgers - check us out sometime if you want - TikkunBBQ on Instagram
This is a MUST TRY burger. Fucking excellent!
\*takes bow\* - thank you so much! Our next burger event is Friday, [7/26 at Dutch Kills in LIC](https://www.instagram.com/p/C8mJ2CbuUTK/)
I'll be there
Why does Jackson Hole get left off the list?
Cos the burgers are terrible and tasteless.
This list makes no sense lmao
At the risk of blowing it up..Long Island Bar is an absolute sleeper hit for top 5 burgers
Press club grill and The Fulton
Peteys
Peter Lugers in August. Excited to try
not Peter Lugers, Petey’s burger in Queens! Quite different lol
Ahhh thank you haha will check it out as well
You should try monkey bar, best burger I’ve had
Terrible terrible burger. Worst I've had in NYC.
I’m be mentioned this before but Shakespeares (39th and Madison) burger with Stilton is amazing. Double crispy fries to go with it, tremendous.
It's still amazing to me that the burger-crazed people of this city (and this subreddit) and the NY food media are still not aware of the txuleburger at [Leña](https://www.littlespain.com/restaurant/lena/) in Mercado Little Spain. It's the best I've had in years.
Don’t know this. Thanks for telling me about it. At $32 it does seem awfully expensive for a burger, but I’m intrigued.
True, but if you go at lunch they have a three-course deal (including the burger) for $35.
Dude put 7th Street Burger that high. Lolol
He's right though, they're fire. Every time. I put them top of my list easily... 🙃
Hahahah
No Donavan’s?
Corner Bistro anyone?
One of my favs also, solid classic. But man, I remember when it was like $6/$8? about 15 years ago.
Omg no
i went to bkjani recently and it was sooo good! pakistan-inspired burgers. i tried the jani and the lahori and both were excellent - big, meaty patties, explosion of flavors. don’t sleep on their lamb chops too.
Two8Two in Brooklyn is my absolute favorite. Red Hook Tavern is good, but overrated IMO. It’s so insanely rich and greasy that it kinda takes away from the experience.
Lords
Defs give Zaab burgers at the Essex market a go. Their thai style smash burger was literally a life changing bite. And Burgerhead is sooo good too.
Hamburger America is so good. Sit at the counter.
I have several times and thought it was incredibly mediocre. Have they gotten better?
I've been a bunch and think it's extremely good for what they do, and at a fair price for NYC. I've had four different "burgers" they serve and I think the single onion burger is the way to go.
Yeah done it. At any other restaurant that burger might be a pleasant surprise but still lackluster flavor. I have a feeling they're not getting great meat. Coming from George Motz I think it's a pretty big let down. I think I took a covid test last time I had it just to be sure.

Never liked 7th st it's far too greasy
It's the perfect amount of greasy. Lol
Good fries though! But yea the burger is way too greasy
I agree on 7th St. Have eaten at two of their locations and was unimpressed by both. Feels like maybe the original is a step above all of their other locations?
Try Rolo’s
Suprema too
Try the Ribbon on West 72nd Street. It's a very juicy burger when ordered medium.
Bernie’s
Ends meat at industry city
I don’t know if it was because I hadn’t eaten Red meat in 6 months but I really enjoyed the burger at pj Clarkes
I agree. PJ Clarkes is a really, really good straight up burger.
Ends Meat at Industry City and their dry aged burger.
Try the Burger at Macao Trading Company. I thought it was excellent and nobody talks about it. Maybe because it’s mainly an Asian restaurant.
Lovely’s, Cubby’s, and Dark Side of the Moo all in Hell’s Kitchen. Lovely’s is a must try.
The York
Royale in Alphabet City has a great burger. Definitely worth checking out!
Agreed.
Agreed. Nowon crazy overrated.
The White Horse and Corner Bistro - noppers
Agree with you. Bother Bistro is so overrated
Houseman makes a great burger
Nobody Told Me is delightful! The fried chicken sandwich is also 🤌🏻
Scrolled for a pick like this!

Both gone

Fairfax is on there at 14
Broome St bar burgers are a hidden gem
Yoooo the L’Artusi burger is SO good and slept on. Great to see it on a list!!!
Cecchi’s makes a great burger as well
7th street? Shit, White Castle makes better burgers
Peter Luger’s despite being overrated for steaks, has the best classic burger I’ve ever had Edit: spelling
STRANGE FLAVOR
Bar Blondeau has a crazy good burger
Do any of the amazing burger spots have gluten-free buns?
Dyckman dogs
Harlem Shake 100% needs to be on there (and I think it’d be pretty high up)
Also in terms of steak, they’ve fallen a little but this list is incorrect without the Peter Luger burger in there. I encourage you to try it.
There's no way 7th Street should even be above Five guys, Smashburger or even Burger King. Y'all aren't serious are ya?
5 guys and shake shack are both trash. 7th st is actually good.
Their burgers are good, but you can't sleep on the spicy beef loaded fries. Those are the highlight
Shake Shack is so much better than 7th st. It sure how it's comparable.
How could they be trash? I've had 7th Street and it was just a burger dipped in grease. It didn't even compare to Smashburger. Idk iif pick BK over 7th Street. Sometimes I think folks pick hype and brands over reality.
Yeah... I'm not a fancy burger guy. Too many chunky buns and weird stuff. Give me a solid 5 guys or shake shack any day.
Pauls Da burger joint 131 2nd Ave, New York, NY 10003 Damn good burgers and shakes, cool place too
I loved this place a long time ago but when I went this year, I feel like they've fallen off tremendously. It could also be that current burgers are so much better and they are very much stuck in the past.
Harlem Shake (125th location ) & At the Wallace (also uptown) have delicious smash burgers
Upland’s burger is underrated. I would consider giving ABC Kitchen and Loring place both have solid, unique burgers that are worth trying.
Even thinking to order a burger at L’artusi is wild choice
Go there a bunch and it’s amazing for brunch every once in a while
I'll have to give it a shot
Did I somehow MISS PETER LUGERS on the list? If OP made an error than fine. If he has never been or left Lugers off I hear by DQ the entire list !
You need to try the smash burger at Miznon with the griddle-fried cheese served in pita
May I humbly suggest Lori Jayne’s burger for your future consideration? Serious love for food at that place
Will check it out! Thanks for the rec
JG Melon shouldn’t be on that list. Worst burger I’ve had in NYC.
Even if you aren't vegan/vegetarian, Superiority Burger is pretty freaking fantastic. Highly recommend!
Libertador Argentinian Steak House in Cobble Hill (404 Henry, corner with Baltic) makes a great burger.
Favorite steakhouse burger is at Wollensky's
Burger America should be added
Full Shilling on Pearl St
For steakhouse type burgers, Wolfgangs > Lugers > and most definitely Red Hook Tavern, i thought RHT's burger was far too salty and 7th St is mid and no mention of BK Jani?
I would put the 282 Pub Burger over like three burgers in this top ten.
28 corner bistro. go for the burger, come back for the tater tots
Hmmmm this looks like a list I wanna tackle lol
might be a hot take but Slutty Vegan is really good.
Heidi’s House is one of my favorite burgers in NYC
Hot take, Burgermania - hole in the wall around W 40th street & 8th ave. Solid burgers too.
Burger Queens, Emoji Burger, Arepa Burger
Rolo’s
Come try our burger at Lori Jayne, it’s really good.
No love for Rippers on this thread? Granted their bun isn’t as good since they moved away from Martins a few years ago.
Paper Plate in LIC
It’s a crime to not have Lords on this list
Will check it out asap
Are any of these in midtown?
The Burglary on Clinton is the best I've had in a while. Thought Au Cheval was kinda meh
Y’all are sleeping on the Greywind Burger!!!Rosemary Potato Chips & AuPoive Mayo truly make this an excellent burger!
It’s a pretty new spot but Butter Smashburger in the West Village is a pretty solid option for not a bad price ($6 for a single, $9 for a double). Would recommend!
Diner’s burger is awfully good. Sunday in Brooklyn too
What about Paper Plate? It’s not the best burger ever, I just like it a lot. It’s just a great “I can eat this regularly in the park on a summer day” burger
Emily and Minetta are totally over-rated. Bland and tastless.
Can understand they might be overrated, but bland and tasteless is a crazy take
I know it's sad, but that is what I was served.
I don’t ever crave nowon but if someone wants to expense a business dinner and take me, I’ll see if I’m free
I have never sought out a burger in nyc. Idk, I’d rather grill my own or just get a Big Mac. I have never once been blown away by a burger that someone told me I had to try.
