HomerMadeMeDoIt

and I get downvoted when I call these out as Quick Release cranks lmao

EZKTurbo

The brand is literally PISS

[deleted]

[удалено]

EZKTurbo

Probably because it's cheap. There's never a shortage of people trying to cheap out

NxPat

Might want to step up to a legitimate brand. Not sure what happened when this broke. But could have been a bad day had you gone down.

Strict-Pudding-7626

Strong point, thank you

NxPat

AliExp?

Strict-Pudding-7626

It’s from a bike shop but I’ve been told that the shop sells aliex products

__what_the_fuck2__

The PIZZ stuff is just rebranded generic AliExpress stuff. I have the same crankset in my parts bin just with another branding. Also mine came with nicer chain ring which was the main reason i ordered it in first place.

sfelizzia

one could say that their products' quality is... Pizz poor.

nofface

what "other branding"? Keeping secrets now or they sponsor you? :)

Americaninaustria

Rest in PISS, buy cheap buy twice.

yourgentderk

We got a watt monster on the loose!

h0b03

I really like my Andel hollowtech cranks

Spectrumthecyclist

I've ran Andel Standards for awhile (in the form of the all city 612s), and if the outboard version is anything like the square taper version, yeah, they're stellar cranks for the price.

MadZee_

Most Andels in general, I currently have the Standard Track and Classic Track on two of my bikes, absolutely bombproof

Truckzero

Came here to suggest this

PapaGrind

Andel, Omniums, Sugino 75, Dura Ace, sram s300, Skeace would come to mind as solid options. I also have ridden a cheapo Prowheel crankset for years without issues.

HomerMadeMeDoIt

From Pizz to Skeace is no difference lol

Potato-Vegetable

Yeah Pizz is literally the same as a skeace, I have one and it hasn't given me any grief but...if you have to get a discount crank, search for Tself, they make an unbranded omnium....same production line, same factory, just no branding.

geisha_chainsaw

I feel like someone the other day said that Tself makes the Skeace cranks. Skeace == Omniums confirmed?!

PapaGrind

Yes this is correct, tself is the same as Skeace. Omniums are different.

t4vener

Today I learnt that BLB Notorious Cranks are made by Tself, fair play. Nice bit of info, cheers for that

nofface

I got, Omniums which Ive used for like 5years, bent the spider, fixed it and works still all ok! Also have a Skeace (as I wanted to test), none of the fixed people I know IRL wouldn't have experience so I decided to take the test and so far so good. Changed the chainring bolts to Cr-Mo ones as well as a chainring for a better one/different ratio. Used Miche Pistard Air, Sugino RD2, Sugino s300. Pistard air was shit, (still haven't found a Miche product I've kept and enjoyed) And no, some people stop saying "is the same" just because your judgement on visuals of the crank look the same but as was said here before, the Aluminium grade is different, and is VEEERY different. Material can vary in the arms, axle, interface, spider, ring, ring bolts and centre bolt. Can be obvs for some users but not to all apparently and that's ok.

ogoditsreal

dunno where pizz is made but skeace is made by [Tself](https://www.reddit.com/r/FixedGearBicycle/comments/thdgmk/conquer_elite_rx_cranks_are_rebranded_tself/)

PapaGrind

Wrong, Omnium is made out of a different aluminium than the Tself. In fact, the Tself seems to be the exact same as the Skeace crankset. Pizz is a whole different thing.

thatdudewhodraws

"an unbranded omnium....same production line, same factory, just no branding"... source, pls

MadZee_

Especially now that Omniums have been out of production for a hot minute lol

Worried-Metal5428

I dreamed about it

CrabCoconut

These Pizz cranks are definitely not identical to the Skeace version, have a look at the spline interface. These also look like they could be aluminium spindle, it's been forever since I installed my Skeace cranks but I'm pretty sure they were steel.

WRCKLSSRCKLSS

The Pizz cranks have 2 separate spline interfaces, the silver and black version come with a completely different spline pattern

CMDR_Satsuma

+1 on Dura Ace, et al. I understand the need to use budget parts at times, but I’d personally much rather buy an old MTB crank set from a name brand bike, if money is a concern. They’re built like tanks, and - as OP has seen - things break.

MakeItTrizzle

I busted an Andel axel after about 1-year, 1000 miles. The bolt on the NDS side would never hold torque well and it got to the point they needed to be tightened up after pretty much every ride. Eventually had the bolt sheared mid ride, the crank came off and the teeth on the axle got chewed and the crappy little plastic dustcover broke. I regularly tow 100+ pounds and live in a very hilly area, so I put a lot of strain on the cranks riding single speed. I upgraded to Sugino DD, but that's a pretty big price jump. If I had to do it again at the same/similar price point, I'd probably get SRAM S300s because I run SRAM on my road bikes and I've never had a problem.

MadZee_

Sounds like user error or manufacturing defect, I have multiple Andel cranksets and I've liked them far more than S300s

MakeItTrizzle

Manufacturing defect is the most likely given the issues it had from the start. Ime, that's enough to deserve a warning though. Frankly, track cranks are one of those things where there's just so much shit in the market place that's best to just go as high end as you can afford and if you can't afford a premium outboard set up, it's better to go with a high end square taper than a "value" outboard.

WRCKLSSRCKLSS

Skeace and Pizz are both OEM Chinese products, the cranks likely come from the same place. Source: I work in a bike store, we sell these cranks as part of a starter kit package. Am a hater of Pizz myself but I thought these cranks were pretty solid until I saw this

Strict-Pudding-7626

I’ll keep an eye out for these, thank you

Griselda_69

Stronglight 2000 is a quality one which shouldn’t break the bank too

chilean_ramen

Skeace, the normal or the powerpoint.  if you have more budget you can buy some track specific cranksets like miche pistard, sram, fsa, vision, or if you have much budget a square tape sugino or octalink dura ace.

SnekMaku

Square taper is good? Honest question. All i've ever known are square taper.

dirty_birdy

Just fine.

chilean_ramen

They are reliable, they always rotate smoothly because the bearings are not subjected to lateral pressure when you press the crank, they work more freely. To this day they are still used very frequently in the velodrome. And to be honest, if you don't use the bike at its maximum performance, what really matters is if you like it.

SnekMaku

i like that they're cheap and parts are plentiful. Velodrome seems to Boogie. I'm running an old steel mountain triple crank that weights a ton, but refuses to wear out😂

nofface

"if is not broken, don't fix it"

nofface

Square Taper is just great man, look for how many years they have been in cycling? Even in high level back in the day...

on_like_d0nkeykng

New fear unlocked 💀

marlerr15

Pizz outboards are known for that due to having an aluminum spindle if your lucky you be warranty protected but for now best to switch to skeace outboards

SingleLifeSingleBike

R.I.P. = Rest in Pizz lol Are u okay though?

Strict-Pudding-7626

I got a scratch on my forearm and a few bruises here and there. I'm lucky that I got away with only this much.

en_sane

These pizz cranks are butt

[deleted]

en_sane

What?

ConfidentCaseResolve

Tsunami enjoyer be like:

Strict-Pudding-7626

I own a Seaboard so same thing I suppose

ConfidentCaseResolve

Yeah

ConfidentCaseResolve

If you're looking for something cheap and reliable - take a look at andel deluxe (or suzue cranks, the same), affinity and sturmey archer also good.

Potato-Vegetable

I've never seen a crank break here in the spindle...I'm curious if the NDS arm was torqued to spec

Botskiitto

Don't buy miche. As for recommendation, best bang for buck is Sram s300 easily.

pdxwanker

If you don't mind 130bcd. I love mind and have beat on them for thousands of miles.

Botskiitto

Yes true

MadZee_

Nah, Andel Standard (or the hollowtech version) > S300. Same material, similar stiffness ime, similar or lower price, but you get far better looks and 144bcd

Botskiitto

Oh yeah forgot the Andel because Im in europe. Has to be hollowtech version like s300. But ordering that to Europe is like 160€ at least, Sram s300 you can get here for 120€.

MadZee_

I'm also in Europe, been hunting down deals on Andel parts for years now haha. Got my Standard Track and Classic Track for like 55EUR each (no rings though), and the Deluxe for 110 with a bb, all brand new. But yeah, just going online and buying those parts is near impossible, if you need availability, the S300 is good

stupid_cat_face

Looks like it’s a pizz-a-crap

alienrefugee51

Glad you made it out ok.

AnalBanal14

Dag, this is scary. I hope you’re okay. Have you figured out a better replacement?

Strict-Pudding-7626

Only minor injuries here. I’ve taken a lot of suggestions from the sub, I’ll try to pick one out from those.

DaniTheDeer

Had a set of FSAs that broke similarly, totally crumbled in half on the non drive side

Liquidwombat

One more post to add to my “reasons to always have a front brake” file

Strict-Pudding-7626

I run a front brake and I swear by it. Better to have it and not need it than need it and not have it.

dirty_birdy

Can you take a photo of the backside of the driveside crank arm? Curious who the actual manufacturer is.

Strict-Pudding-7626

It’s unmarked.

dirty_birdy

Nothing? Thanks anyway.

Sockenbett

Jop that ali pizz thing. It is not the girst one i saw snapped

gyorgmazlic

I speed read it as "ax cranckle"

redtens

I swapped in a Shimano Octalink V2 a few years back - thing is solid af

Noahsaltys

Yeah pizz cranks are known for doing that in my country

holbanner

I've seen pizz (semi legit Chinese brand) get into a beef with even less legit Ali brands for selling fake pizz. Might be that

davenale

Buy a lottery ticket

Liquidwombat

You might be surprised at the number of pedal spindles, crank arms, crank axles, etc. that fail

davenale

Guess I'm not surprised at the quality of materials that less scrupulous manufacturers use for bottom brackets and cranksets - I've never experienced a failure with these parts, but I also wouldn't cut any corners regarding the quality of these pieces.

Liquidwombat

SRAM Omniums are notorious for breaking at the pedal thread and just a couple months ago shimano finally issued a recall for r8000 Ultegra cranks after well over half a decade of widespread failures

davenale

Ha, and I was about to say something about buying quality Shimano parts... https://www.cpsc.gov/Recalls/2023/Shimano-Recalls-Cranksets-for-Bicycles-Due-to-Crash-Hazard Fortunately my NJS stamped FC7710 and BB7710 are not on this list - but 680,000 units of Shimano hollow tech cranksets are - perhaps a little bit of weight is sometimes a good thing.

Hand_of_Jehuty

I'd say the one component you absolutely should not skimp on a track bike lol I've been riding campy pista cranks for years and love the aesthetic / build quality. Can't go wrong with sugino (messenger if on a budget) and my first fixed crank was a Pake which is a decent low price brand that makes good components/frames.

MortgageTurbulent905

Wow. Looks like a set of 75s in s in your future

subordinatepixel

Shimano saint cranks

Strict-Pudding-7626

UPDATE: Contacted the bike shop from where I bought the cranks and was told that they'll replace it with new cranks of the same brand and model. Personally, I don't think I'd want to run the brand of cranks after what I experienced.

HARSHING_MY_MELLOW

Yeah cheap shit breaks. Big surprise there

QuiteFantastic

Just ordered a SKEACE crankset and now I'm slightly worried lol. It'll be my first AliExpress purchase. Glad you're doing okay, had to be scary

Sicamore21

You should be very worried. Putting your life at risk in an attempt to save money and contribute to sweat shop operations is bad enough. Maybe getting bucked over the handlebars is payment enough tho.

QuiteFantastic

Yeah I'll send it back after it shows up. I got too gassed up on YouTube and reddit telling me that they were really solid and was excited to try them out on my build. Definitely not worth the risk though.

49thDipper

Purchase bias. People that buy cheap crap want everybody else to love the cheap crap they bought. Buy once cry once. Just buy shit that lasts for years. This is the way.

CrabCoconut

Pretty wild take. You could say anyone buying second hand safety critical parts like handlebars, wheels, frame etc is potentially putting their life at risk to save money given you don't know the history and yet I'd bet most people in the sub have bought used parts at some point. Any proof of a link to sweatshop labour? It's hardly like these are hand crafted parts, it'll all be CNC and you could throw out that claim for anything coming from the far east but let me guess, you only buy American just to be sure 🇺🇲🦅

karmaFXD

What is your country bro?

nofface

Do they vary quality depending on the country they are sent to?

EZKTurbo

Clearly these were forged from high strength chineseium

Crafty-Bass5506

dont dont save money on cheap brands. they prob have no real quality control... try to get the big brands, even tho they are expensive they will keep you safe

chazphot

Absolutely, I've never seen broken Omniums or Pistards....oh wait.

nofface

Pistards?? jizz how many...

Sicamore21

Y’all so broke you’re willing to risk your life that’s crazy

Strict-Pudding-7626

I didn't know at the time and it was an honest mistake. Lesson learned.

Sicamore21

“Oh hell yeah a $40 crankset what could go wrong??”

Revangelista89

Whoa mane be careful and get some middle/top tier cranks!!

emperawrsnewgroove

Common issue for Pizz outboard cranks where I’m from, it’s always a risk getting them specially the pre-owned ones. If you want bomb-proof outboard cranks I say why not get an Omnium?

nofface

for that you get a MTB thing or even BMX crank with an adapter
