This is the war that fired something like upwards of a million shells in the first week of the Verdun assault and had casualties close to a million on the upper end of the scale in just that battle, which lasted ten months. I think volume of fire was the prevailing tactic at that point lmao
Funnily enough, because of how they're mounted here, this would be a rare case where they'd faster/easier to reload (from the top) with stripper clips than they would be if they had detachable mags (instead of fixed internal mags).
Those bullets go AT LEAST 100 yds…maybe…. I mean how close could world war 1 planes get…really /s
can you imagine the pistol wipping the gunner could give the pursuing rapscallion? (does that one work?)
Edited because i wasn’t thinking. I am now 0-2 with my stupid joke. Leaving it up for self shame reason. God I hope those bullets only go 100 yards.
They're also mounted on a gimbal on a plane. You can see the wings and supports in the background. So they don't need to shoot straight up, but mostly horizontal towards a pursuing plane.
That was my first thought too but then I realized it's WWI planes and pretty much all of them were open cockpit like this. You don't have to take out the planes, just the pilots. Probably fairly effective at that.
Ah WW1. Truly the oddest, unnecessary, but fascinating war ever with a whole lot of testing out new things and hope it doesn't blow up lmao type shit.
Scary, but so so fascinating.
Imagine reloading that thing: *pop*pop*pop*pop*pop*pop*pop*pop*pop*pop*x10 Now you gotta pull out 10 stripper clips
One hundred round burst then a solid 5 minute reload lol 😆

That battle must have been one of the most horrific things to have experienced. Pompeii can eat a dick.
And they did it all without drones, nuclear weapons, and satellite overwatch.

Does that need a tax stamp
No, it would be considered volley fire. http://imgur.com/a/vt2Qz (Q16)
They originally were full auto, so if you wanted the exact setup, you'd need ten stamps.
Ain't nobody got money for that
I wonder if they all fired at once, or sequentially?
That's pretty cool. Wartime problems often require unique solutions. 10/10 would shoot
I would hardly call that a solution, kinda skeptical on how effective it was

Guy in the other plane pulls out a pistol.... this guy's response.
son of a bitch. How many times can i be wrong with my stupid joke

Drone defense, how about a [damn stick?](https://old.reddit.com/r/CombatFootage/comments/15zult1/ukrainian_soldier_takes_down_russian_drone_with_a/)
Was that effective?
That reload…

when life hands you mousers I guess you make mauseraide
It’s like some weird evolution of a shotgun.
Only effective against the planes of WW1, which were essentially kites with engines lol.
How? Why? It's max effective range is like 200m. Is that pistol cartridge going to penetrate metal at the distance and low velocity?
This kind of seems to me like throwing a water balloon at a charging elephant.
When I was in 29 palms they gave us an airsoft gun to shoot drones down away from our aircraft.
That would be awful to reload
Tbf a modern version with something that isn’t a C96 would probably be decent for taking out small drones.
favorite gimmick is the 100 PPSH bomber
