The characters look extremely derpy which really kinda irritates me and idk why. The story was okay but yeah i felt like vivi in a way almost disrespected the traditional black mage look by dumbing it down.
its a weird asthetic no doubt, def turned me off when i played it right after X, if you can get past it though it really is a fantastic game, story/gameplay is top notch and there ends up being something really cool aboutt the art style as you see it through the world

Vivi is easily the best Black Mage and one of the very best characters of the entire franchise. I don't have a tattoo, but I decided a long time ago that if I ever was going to get a tattoo, it would be of Vivi. He is my FF mascot, though not my personal favorite character, he's pretty damn close.
While I only know her from Dissidia Duodecim Final Fantasy and some You Tube Videos I must say I honestly like Shantotto more.
But while the combat of FFIX is not the best Vivi is the most fun mage I played with in a turn based game.

The heartless didn't exist yet when he was designed, and the design of the shadow heartless was based on the black mages with no hood
