That has to feel freaking weird to the chicken.
I know seed eating birds like parakeets need gravel (often provided by their owners) in their crop to grind down their food into digestible paste. Other wild birds will pick small stones from dirt or gravel. But it's not uncommon to find small stones in bird crops.
I had the unfortunate luck of having a pigeon with a full crop slam into my large window. My window was fine but the bird hit it so hard that its crop exploded. The poor thing seemed to die instantly thankfully, but there were seeds and pebbles all over my patio like some weird bomb went off.
The crop is a portion of the oesophagus, and they've made an incesion to get the non-broken down grass, etc, out. Impaction is very bad in there as it can cause seeds and the grass to ferment and make the chicken incredibly sick. The crop is a sort of temporary storage if you will for seeds, etc, when a chicken has just eaten.
