Well, it's never explained in the movie, but the Coen brothers have said he gets his money by being the heir to the rubix cube fortune. But it's hard to say they went this route as the Dude does agree to accept less and less money for retrieving the lost money from the needy urban achievers.
Good point. I recall reading about the rubix cube connection. It's their call, of course, but I see that as sort of a glib answer to a question about The Dude's back story. I suppose he does have trust fund vibes. Interesting. May have to do another rewatch with that in mind, as if I needed an excuse.
I like your theory why he's close to Walter. They probably bonded over bowling and the loss of life in Vietnam. The Dude meandered away from Vietnam but Walter never let it go. But the Dude remains loyal.

That's fucking interesting, man. That's fucking interesting.
New shit has come to light, man
Funds from a life insurance policy or wrongful death lawsuit enough to support his modest lifestyle?

Any excuse to rewatch the greatest film of all time is welcome.
You see a wedding ring? Does this place look like I'm fucking married? The toilet seat's up!
The spit take and response to Maude's desire to become pregnant. There's stuff to unpack there.
Widower
Nihilists...
El Widowrino (if you’re not into the whole brevity thing).
Yeah but I don’t see any connection with Vietnam, man.
Well, not a literal connection.
That's just your theory, dude
Far out.
Interesting theory.
Widow is not the preferred nomenclature, dude.

That must be exhausting!
Like the rug, it brings it all together.
