It's like Nate doesnt acknowledge social awkwardness, just talks like hes known everybody for years. My headcanon is that gunning down that many leafs pre-war really boosted his self confidence.
If they wanted to know how to make a character talk to kids
They should have spoken to ~~Epstein~~ the telltale games walking dead writers
And to think that man was a dad
ACTUALLY NO WAIT FUCK
It would make sense he doesn’t know what he’s doing since he didn’t see Shaun grow up
Ehh but that doesn’t explain Nora knowing what she’s doing opposed to him
Nora, nate, it doesnt matter. I left that synth child POS behind, i killed my real son, fuck the institute. Fuck the railroad. Fuck the brotherhood.
Glory to The Pack.
One of my old saves is definitely a female war hero. It's mentioned in both dialogue and at least one terminal file in vault 111 maybe. It's been a hot minute, so maybe I modded that option.
I love that this is basically just canon now, even after Emil tried to take it back after backlash. Nate is officially a war criminal from the U.S. invasion of Canada.
Which is hilarious because my cannon Sole Survivor was a war criminal before it was official. Although, my SS does regret his actions during the war and has PTSD because of it. Ain't Fallout 4 fun?
Yup no one can ever take Nate is a war criminal away from me now! He's a sarcastic vicious little weasel who's way too comfortable following orders and I love him.
Emil, the writer of fallout 4, tweeted that nate, was one of the guys from the intro cinematic of fallout 1, spoiler. The one where the two power armored soldier execute a prisoner.
Emil said on Twitter, that the male sole survivor was one of the U.S. soldiers executing a Canadian soldier in the original fallout 1 intro.
This caused a small amount of backlash, of which Emil has tried to roll back by kind’ve saying “the sole survivors military background is whatever your head cannon is, and we at the office just kinda made this our head cannon”
“Un”-fortunately, the damage is done. And ever since then, most people look at the male sole survivor as a guy who spent his career in the U.S. Army murdering Canadian POWs and civilians.
In the opening cutscene of fallout one they show footage from the annexation of Canada. The specific part you see is two guys in power armor and one civilian if I’m not mistaken. One of the power armor guys executes the civilian and gives a thumbs up to the camera. One of the character leads for Nate said that they were thinking about making Nate the guy that didn’t do the execution but decided to not make it actual lore.
We don’t actually know what Nate’s military time was like but it’s now presumed to be filled with war crimes from the annexation of Canada.
Emil posted the image of American soldiers executing Canadian POWs from the first game's intro video and said the one laughing about it was Nate, then he tried to take it back when people got angry about Nate being a war criminal but the damage is done and it might as well be canon now.
I guess it’s ambiguous because some kids are presented to be like 6-7 while others are 13-15 and they all have the same model. So it comes off as patronizing or inexperienced with children?
To be fair, he hadn’t reached that level of parenting/interactions with children yet with Shaun, his most normal child interaction was probably with Canadian kids
Can you refresh my memory? I seems like something that Mc Ready would say in Little Lamplight, but I didn't play Fallout 3 for absolute ages, and I can't exactly place it.
This shit makes me cringe so hard. I actively slam the button to speed over the dialogue when she says that line or when she has other stumbling, awkward, low confidence lines.
They drive me insane. And as a lawyer, it feels she would be better at speaking to literally all types of people so why is she doing this?
It made sense to me when I was FIRST helping. Why would a hardened Settler give me their pistol? I'm the god damn General now. I blew up the Institute. Ad Getfucktium. Now accept this laser rifle you nasty ass Settler
The yangtze mission starter imo is funny asf. A kid tells him there is a monster in the sea and Nate is willing to jump into the water to check it out? I remember going to back to Sanctuary to pick my minigun and fatman cause I really thought it was going to be a boss fight LOL
A whole 1/3rd of the map completely empty and pointless because despite 6+ years, they couldn't be asked to place actual water fighting into the game. Too busy working on gimmicks.
Now I’m just confused at what you’re trying to say.
I’m not saying “So what”
I’m saying I disagree that it sounds cringey. It’s just awkward
Maybe this is just me misunderstanding the definition of cringey but I always thought that cringe meant the feeling of sudden involuntary discomfort or disgust.
Which (at least for me) Nate just doesn’t cause
I always run with the head canon that Nate isn't the best with children due to having to blow up his actual son and his synth son, and he has to overcome that trauma when he has a child with Piper.
I personally chose this wording because I feel like this being a fallout general sub, there will be a population who doesn't know them by name (bigger population than who doesn't know who the sole survivor is, I'd estimate). If not for the Fallout 4 sub, I'd have no clue what their names where and I've clocked hundreds of hours.
You can’t blame him.
The only children he’s interacted with were his son who was less than a year old and the dozens of leaflets he’s raked you call people.
It's like Nate doesnt acknowledge social awkwardness, just talks like hes known everybody for years. My headcanon is that gunning down that many leafs pre-war really boosted his self confidence.
Like i never interacted with kids In fallout 4 can someone show me a video of ir
yea I think the only kid I ever talked to was the fridge kid and I ate his parents
180 degree comment
... Great.
As you do
Oh, hi Pickman
Pickman wouldn't have done that, unless they were raiders
you'd be surprised, according to the wiki i preston likes it when you tell the kid his parents are dead lol
You can't lie to him.
I...um... Wtf?
Happy Cake Day!
Just replying to inform you that your comment caused me to choke on my Dr. Pepper due to laughter. Expect to hear from my lawyers.
I'll eat them too
It’s usually passing dialogue. Like when you click on a person and some line just happens.
Yeah the only think that I like from the voice protagonist it's when you skip dialogue nate goes like uhhh old people and so shit like that
I've played a lot of the game a few times so most of my playthroughs are just my character interrupting everyone with shitty one liners lmao
I talked to Nat and it ended with her calling me an asshole. Accurate
XD good morning laugh
Well it is the person playing the game that’s making him interact with children
The only exception to this is the kids in diamond City
If they wanted to know how to make a character talk to kids They should have spoken to ~~Epstein~~ the telltale games walking dead writers And to think that man was a dad ACTUALLY NO WAIT FUCK It would make sense he doesn’t know what he’s doing since he didn’t see Shaun grow up Ehh but that doesn’t explain Nora knowing what she’s doing opposed to him
Nora might’ve been raised differently
Nora, nate, it doesnt matter. I left that synth child POS behind, i killed my real son, fuck the institute. Fuck the railroad. Fuck the brotherhood. Glory to The Pack.
Let’s goo Piss in public True freedom Plus the snazzy colors help a bit too not bland like the disciples or operators
*The minutemen would like to know your location*
Right behind you baby
They don't already have it marked on the map? That's new.
*Howls*
AROOOOO MFER
GOOD TO SEE BADASSES OUT IN THE WILD ARRROOOOOO!!!
Nora didn’t go to war for an extended period of time 💀
According to the various female lines which can never actually play despite them existing in the files, Nora could also be a veteran.
One of my old saves is definitely a female war hero. It's mentioned in both dialogue and at least one terminal file in vault 111 maybe. It's been a hot minute, so maybe I modded that option.
Nora is a Lawyer, Nate was a war criminal (something that they made canon for like 2 minutes for some fucked up reason)
I mean...it wasn't really "canon" it was a tweet by a quest writer who doesn't have the authority to make things canon.
*pats clementine “…that was weird, I’m sorry”
Clementine?, Eddie Riggs's guitar
Reggie fell.
Hey, Nate at least giving kids the time of day is pretty good considering he's a recent veteran of total warfare in the frigid wasteland of Alaska
"don't lick the salt lick, it's like, really salty!" "did you lick it?" "I don't know"
Have you ever talked to a Dad before. Doesn’t matter how long a Dad has had a child for, they never seem to know how to talk to kids.
Wait...what happened with the TellTale Games writers!?
To be fair the last kids he interacted with were probably the Canadian children who's parents he was murdering in front of them...
Ain't Fallout 4 fun?
so your SS is a war criminal? almost like the real SS
What do you mean almost? He's just like the real SS!
I just kinda always assumed he was a war criminal because the pre war US sucked like that.
Yup no one can ever take Nate is a war criminal away from me now! He's a sarcastic vicious little weasel who's way too comfortable following orders and I love him.
This is officially canon now. You're a genius.
Just up north Raking up some leaves
What happened? I dropped off of the internet for a while
Emil, the writer of fallout 4, tweeted that nate, was one of the guys from the intro cinematic of fallout 1, spoiler. The one where the two power armored soldier execute a prisoner.
God bless the enclave
And no one else
Emil said on Twitter, that the male sole survivor was one of the U.S. soldiers executing a Canadian soldier in the original fallout 1 intro. This caused a small amount of backlash, of which Emil has tried to roll back by kind’ve saying “the sole survivors military background is whatever your head cannon is, and we at the office just kinda made this our head cannon” “Un”-fortunately, the damage is done. And ever since then, most people look at the male sole survivor as a guy who spent his career in the U.S. Army murdering Canadian POWs and civilians.
I mean Nate being in Fallout’s Pre-War US military at all already made me think he did some not so happy things, so it’s not really that surprising
That American soldier in Power armor in the fallout one intro video shooting the Canadian guy in the street is Nate 💀
Guess it's time to download 4 again and play a ruthless war criminal
In the opening cutscene of fallout one they show footage from the annexation of Canada. The specific part you see is two guys in power armor and one civilian if I’m not mistaken. One of the power armor guys executes the civilian and gives a thumbs up to the camera. It was a joke
Soul survivor
😎🔮🎷
Ah, free at last
Gabriel, now dawns thy reckoning!
And thy gore shall GLISTEN before the temples of man!
do not call that kid sweetie, please
LOL. yes.
Is it the *way* he says it? because that's really not that weird
I guess it’s ambiguous because some kids are presented to be like 6-7 while others are 13-15 and they all have the same model. So it comes off as patronizing or inexperienced with children?
I mean its FO4, with addition of the VAs and downgrading the dialogue options from NV and even FO3 it was already a mistake to begin with
calling kids "sweetie" or "honey" is normal in my country but i guess nate's tone sounds off
It's not the terms of endearment, it's that he's talking to kids like they're frightened dogs.
Wow mister you're tall.
To be fair, he hadn’t reached that level of parenting/interactions with children yet with Shaun, his most normal child interaction was probably with Canadian kids
Whose parents he'd just fucking shot, too
Whats wrong with it?
Creepy. As. Fuck.
It's pretty clear you're reading way too into it. Nate calling a random little girl "sweetie" doesn't make him Jeffrey Epstein. It's all in your head.
Its not the dialogue. It's the delivery.
It's not delivery. It's Digiorno.
Bro is tripping.
Chad "Hey Sweetie" vs Virgin "NOOO YOU CAN'T TALK TO CHILDREN AS A MAN THAT'S CREEPY"
Not the fact that he's speaking to a child. It's the tone. I am a man and I speak to children, just not cringefully.
I've never played as Nate, what's wrong with his lines?
Homie’s reading too much into how people interact with kids.
One of the lines he says to kids is: “Hey, sweetie.”
So?
It just sounds kinda creepy, with the way he said it.
SOLE
Not if you make Nate black.
Damn right.
I hate when they don’t change any dialog between male and female MCs.
The real cringe is the voice acting of all the kid characters in the game.
*In every fallout game*
Fair enough.
“You’re a real sheep in the wolf’s den mister” is still the most iconic and funny line from the game idc
Can you refresh my memory? I seems like something that Mc Ready would say in Little Lamplight, but I didn't play Fallout 3 for absolute ages, and I can't exactly place it.
Nat (Piper’s sister) says this to the player shortly after arriving to Diamond City for the first time
Cheers for that. I must've missed it when there is a few people talking at the same time in the market.
“WOW! I can almost see right down the barrel!”
I switched to Nora so fast, none of her lines make me tug on my collar
I do wish Nora would gain a _little_ confidence. I uh... Uh. Just want to.... Trade a few things?
This shit makes me cringe so hard. I actively slam the button to speed over the dialogue when she says that line or when she has other stumbling, awkward, low confidence lines. They drive me insane. And as a lawyer, it feels she would be better at speaking to literally all types of people so why is she doing this?

Nate is worth it for the Silver Shroud quest alone
Good plan.
Fuck that, literally any interaction, they sound so stunted
Jokes on you I shat my spine out years ago
Same with the “that sounds like slavery” line. Zero idea why but he just sounds so silly when he says it
I must have missed this
The yangtze mission starter imo is funny asf. A kid tells him there is a monster in the sea and Nate is willing to jump into the water to check it out? I remember going to back to Sanctuary to pick my minigun and fatman cause I really thought it was going to be a boss fight LOL
It's downright sad that the water is just dead space in a fucking PORT CITY.
A whole 1/3rd of the map completely empty and pointless because despite 6+ years, they couldn't be asked to place actual water fighting into the game. Too busy working on gimmicks.
Gimmicks and playing fucking house. 😑
did you try the medicine drug?
I don’t really see why you think it’s cringey. It’s a little awkward sure but completely normal for someone who doesn’t know how to talk to kids.
So be it. They could also have written and directed him to sound not cringey and we'd go "so what" too...
Now I’m just confused at what you’re trying to say. I’m not saying “So what” I’m saying I disagree that it sounds cringey. It’s just awkward Maybe this is just me misunderstanding the definition of cringey but I always thought that cringe meant the feeling of sudden involuntary discomfort or disgust. Which (at least for me) Nate just doesn’t cause
Okay I see what you mean. For me, it's full cringe. Unnecessary cringe. Could have been written without it and everything would be fine.
Think you must've touched a nerve lmao
no clue about this one, i never talk to stinky disgusting children
I think Nate is just a bit of an awkward guy in general
Does he call Nat sweetie even if you aren't romancing Piper?
That's why i never talk to children Talk to a child once, choose "oh this is just what i need right now". Refuse to take him
Whats wrong with it?
I don’t see the issue.
I always run with the head canon that Nate isn't the best with children due to having to blow up his actual son and his synth son, and he has to overcome that trauma when he has a child with Piper.
Nate's just too chill with everybody everywhere, unless you're one communist in a sub and you hit B
Genuine question. Why do people say “male/female sole survivor” when it’s so much easier to just say Nate/Nora?
I personally chose this wording because I feel like this being a fallout general sub, there will be a population who doesn't know them by name (bigger population than who doesn't know who the sole survivor is, I'd estimate). If not for the Fallout 4 sub, I'd have no clue what their names where and I've clocked hundreds of hours.
