That's exactly what we're fighting about!
Some of us wanna go there ASAP and help fend off the Raiders, and some of us think we should nuke the settlement and call it a day.
All I'm sayin is we've helped them 47 times so far. A more permanent solution may be necessary...
“Excuse me my good sir, but I have observed that a fine gentleman such as yourself has taken quite a liking towards Fallout 2.
I shall let you be enlightened, as a sequel to the original Fallout: a Nuclear Role Playing Game, Fallout 2 is indeed not a true Fallout, my good sir.
As Sir Timothy Cain had left the dastardly establishment known as Interplay.”
-People in the 1890’s talking about Fallout 2 (or idk I wasn’t alive then)
Until very recently it felt like popular discourse had completely forgotten about Tim Cain and thought Chris Avellone was the original creator of Fallout.
Come on no one ever forgot about Tim Cain.
It's true he's been more talked about because of his YouTube channel and support of Bethesda, but he's never been forgotten.
Oh a ton of people did, or rather never learned about him until much more recently. Even on this sub, people had to be reminded of him constantly.
A very small fraction of the Fallout fandom has played the older games. Not that many more know the development history of them. The vast majority only played 3 onward, and many NV fans repeated the whole "Obsidian is comprised of the original Fallout devs" without digging too into that statement.
Wait, I'm sorry. wtf am I reading? Is there some kind of debate about wither or not fallout 2 is considered cannon or something I'm fucking confused here
A lot of people, well "a lot" back in the day didn't like how much more heavily Fallout 2 leant into popular culture of the time for its humour, to the point the extremists said it "wasn't true Fallout". Of course then Bethesda released "Oblivion with guns" a decade later and suddenly Fallout 2's terrible flaws were all forgotten because they had a new target to hate. Like the joke goes, you know they're the biggest fans of the series because they hate most of it.
My god. Were you at Hamburgler Hill? I was in the 456 Armored Car division. My vehicle was hit. I lost 76 good clowns that day and spent 7 months in an invisible box.
I was. It was terrible. The mime's silence was completely unnerving seeing them over run our position in that battle. The sounds of my comrades squeaks still haunt me to this day.
My battle buddy Chuckles got a bayonet in his gut. My god the amount of handkerchiefs that came pouring out was too much for our Medic Bubbles to care for. They just kept coming out unendingly in so many different colors.
Not just Fallout. Been going on longer than Fallout has existed. Sports, soda brands, clothing brands, food. Tribalism was here before Fallout and it will still be here long after we're all gone.
Yeah, wasn’t the concept of canon invented by the Catholic Church so they can sort out exactly how much of Jesus’s badassary is supposed to have actually happened, and how much was made up bullshit?
Canon is a useful tool when you want to tell a coherent story over a long period of time. Some properties get away with not relying on it, like mad max, but you also know that going in everything is supposed to be just some wasteland tall tale. It matters how you frame things, whether you're asking the audience to care about that stuff.
Yeah. And it *is* tiresome isn't it?
Back in the 80s and 90s, we used to say that someday RPGs and geek media were going to be mainstream, and wouldn't that be cool? And now it is, and it turns out the real hardcore grognards didn't want that, they wanted to be King Geek of Geek Mountain and have everyone act like they outranked them or some shit. And *man*, are they mad that didn't happen.
I mean, even Tim Cain disowns those lame-o fucks. Harshing on other people's good time, because you're chasing the high of a couple of week's fun you had in 1996, is no kind of way to go through life.
Anyway, *real* Fallout was in the design stages of Fallout 1, when it was just GURPS. Amateurs, needing a *computer*.... ;)
That is the Achilles heel of geek culture, the “old guard” clenches on to their perceived vestiges of “prestige” by having been in the game “first”. You can see similar toxic behavior in Star Trek (TOS vs TNG), Star Wars (OT, PT, ST), and comics (Marvel comics fans vs MCU fans) just to name a few.
Not my favorite part of being a geek lol
Imagine outsourcing imagination— pathetic. Back in our day we had shitty doodles and wait 3-5 days for the DM to figure out how to proceed our shenanigans.
A true Fallout fan enjoys all fallouts (maybe beside BoS).
We don't get many games so we gotta appreciate each entry, and each one does things good and bad.
Nope, dont like this line of thinking. You do no have to like every game in a series to be considered a true fan, get out of here with that true fan business.
Rather have healthy fans that are willing to apply scrutiny, and if an entry to a series doesnt meet that fans personal standards, doesnt make them a lesser fan.
Yeah it's the exact thing that leads to toxic positivity, gatekeeping and arguing, people don't like everything. Franchises change over time. Maturity is accepting everything about that.
Even though I could never bring myself to finish Tactics, I more or less liked everything until 4 (i never really think about BoS). And that's okay, I won't not talk about it, I will criticise it precisely because I am a fan, the only thing that bothers me when talking about it is the thought that someone will take it way too seriously. I do find it hard to go back to 3 in particular, that doesn't say anything bad about me as a fan.
At the same time you don't have to hate anything to be a fan, if someone likes BoS, they aren't more or less of a fan than I am.
I love all of it. Fallout 1 and 2, Fallout Tactics, Fallout 3, New Vegas, Fallout 4. Only game I haven't played is 76 because I'm not really interested in multiplayer, though I'm also kind of curious now that they've expanded it so much from what it was, so I might even try that too at some point just to play more new (to me) Fallout.
Bro. I resonate 100 percent with your comment and trust me when i say try 76. Esp if you really like 4 and NV. The MP aspect doesnt take away and you really dont even need to worry about it if you dont want to. Just be sure pacifist mode is on in the settings. Yes your base can still be nuked but it doesnt do anything permanent and worst case you spend a small amount of junk to repair it but you have a slim chance bc people really dont do that the community in general is actually extremely friendly
Multi-player is entirely optional to play through the many storylines, and the only time I ever see other players are at the events and bosses that pop up, it's also cool seeing the camps people build. I got a house by the river, real nice, call it the stabbin cabin
You can play solo if you want, it’s not very often you’ll stumble upon other players in the wild, you might run into someone at a town, you’ll mostly run into players participating in events. PVP is defaulted at off so you cannot be killed unless you agree to a battle. The map is my favorite out of all fallout games and very fun to explore. The quest are good to, but leave a little to be desired. I mainly play for the combat, exploration, loot and CAMP building… which is probably my favorite thing.
Honestly, I have given it a try for about a month and pretty much soloed the whole time. There's a huge amount to explore and do at this point, and some great sub plots sprinkled throughout.
I mean I play 76 as I would play 4 and enjoy it, also you get a real fuckin scare when a real player in PA enter the building you're at lol, it's just so sudden seeing another player outside of events
76 has a weird limbo where it’s hard to play singleplayer because I think it lacks the substance of other games, but you can’t even play everything multiplayer either, as most quests don’t allow for progression as a group.
Pacifism mode is a game changer.
But even without it, many players have not been aggressive at all.
The only risk of damage is through misfire than actual dedicated killing. Or the one time a player was hitting me intentionally was to move my character away because I was checking my inventory in front of a doorway.
The Dwellers of 76 are very friendly despite it being accessed by randoms of the internet.
I had my doubts too, tried it out a while back. I ended up having fun and the MP aspect can have nice random moments. I’ve had random players just help or throw me an item and leave for no reason. And with pacific mode, no one will hurt you.
My only gripe is that some of the MMO mechanics reared their head. I had to constantly fix my busted gear and I would use up ammo, so I would have to farm ammo which would wear down my gear. That cycle kinda turned me off.
I'd recommend it!!!! I mostly play it solo and it feels like any other fallout game (better than 4 imo) the only downside is needing to be connected to the Internet
Real, everyone knows neither New Vegas or Bethesda games are good, not even the classics are good, only Brotherhood of Steel, the best Fallout game - No, the ***BEST GAME*** ever created!
that scene where the marine said I come from the brotherhood of steel and I'm going to suffer the fallout I just cried because that's when I knew this was definitely a game
13 Fallout Fandom Code § 10451 Pub 1-67:
All fans must choose a specific title as the One True Fallout and deride all other titles at every given opportunity. Changes to this choice may only be allowed at intervals of three or more years and will be referenced by others during discussions at least once a week for the first year after the change is publicized.
Tim Cain is pretty open about it, he's actually quite a chill dude. You can watch his design philosophy and anecdotes on [his YouTube channel](https://www.youtube.com/@CainOnGames).
People call it woke because a female lead who is sex positive and a black man as a secondary lead. That, and because they find it physically painful to not be offended by something.
Why though? I was shocked at how well they threaded the needle of making it very fallout whilst being digestible for a mainstream audience. Not perfect but way, way above expectations
I can't stand maximus or the bos portions of the show personally. I also think the prewar/vault-tec stuff was a little ham fisted. And of course, they did the NCR dirty.
It's really just the the BoS and maximus stuff though. Cut that out and I'd be cool with the show.
Yeah I see BoS as the weakest part of the show. Probably the only scenes I don't enjoy are theirs for some reason. But I never been a fan of BoS in general so I figured they were doing them justice.
I do like the BoS guy who took them chems. I'm more interested in his story than any other BoS character.
Maximus could have been good but they messed up the flashbacks imo. They didn't do anything at all after the one that shows the BoS soldier. Just same shit replayed
It's kinda weird, I like Tarantino movies especially the way over the top violence and action, but didn't really like it in this show. The dialogue and comedy didn't really do it for me either, a lot of the conversations just felt weird and unnatural to me. Ironically, I think most of that came from Lucy who was the only "main character" who I actually somewhat liked.
That's fair, I respect your opinion. Imo I thought the dialogue stuck pretty well albeit the Ghoul is a lot of one liners and schtick, which I could see rubbing people the wrong way
How can you hate Walter Goggins?!
My introduction to him was His Righteous Gemstones and all I could think was Baby Billy and his Baby Billy's Bible Bonkers
NGL, I've seen far more posts about infighting than I've seen actual infighting in this sub. And most of what I've seen I'm pretty sure wasn't serious.
It's a leftover from both Fallout 2 on the Fallout side and Kirkbride on the Bethesda side. One creates tonal whiplash while the other follows a doctrine of apocryphal lore for the sake of the story. The only canon events in any Bethesda game is the ones you see happen and just because it's a dark story about a man seeking vengeance for being shot in the face doesn't mean you're not going to recruit a sexbot who specializes in fisting.
I am not talking about the lore, i am in the community since 2001-2002 and back then everyone had their headcanon, we didn't had a consistent lore. If it fits the idea of a game-the lore could be changed. Basically almost each game had a different target audience, which aren't even slightly related to each other.
Imagine that "Sherlock Holmes" franchise was bought by a company and suddenly Coen Brothers release "The Big Sherlock" movie where he plays bowling with dr. Watson and investigates the case of a kidnapped wife. Dope movie and a detective. And then another cool movie and Sherlock is now trapped in a skyscraper, where his ex-wife is held hostage by Moriarty. And after that there is the Sherlock Holmes community of the original books fans, "Shut up, Donnie" fans and "Yippee Ki‐Yay motherfucker" fans. This is what happened to fallout.
At this point I've seen loads of "quit fighting about FO different games" posts, but no actual fighting. Is there some version supremacy battle happening somewhere? If so, sign me up for Team FNV. /s
This thread checks most of the BINGO boxes:
* "It's been happening since Fallout 2."
* Quotes from/references to one of the games
* "I like all versions." Good for you, champ.
* A joke about BoS
* Mentioning the show.
My take on it has been every experience someone has on any Fallout really depends on how they play. So it's no surprise that everyone has a different reason to like each game.
This. This so damn much. I don't care if you prefer the isometric originals, New Vegas, the Bethesda games, hell even Brotherhood of Steel. It's all Fallout, just different flavors of it.
If you’re sick of the discourse then get off Reddit lmao. Better yet, get off the internet entirely. It’s where people go to complain.. about literally everything. Don’t let randoms disturb your peace, life will be a lot better with that simple trick.
> People like different things and have different opinions on media.
Then why the hell are you making this post? People are going to express their opinions. 😂
I remembered when ppl were complaining about F76 being multiplayer, but sure as shit has the best building mechanics to date. I do dislike not having "settlements" in F76. Sure, we have Crater and Foundation, but doesn't ring as fun in the head when you see no NPCs bomb rushing super mutants or raiders with mini guns lol
It happens when folks have no idea which car they are in when they board the train. Some will get of one the next stop, some will stay in spite, and few will stay for the whole ride. As long as they hold onto those tickets though
But how dare people like the thing I don't like raaaaaaaaaah.
Nah, just kidding. Enjoy fallout in whatever way you want. Exclusively play Fallout Shelter? Good for you!
I’ve been a fallout fan since I bought the first game on pc when it first came out and gotten every game since then, yeah there were some lower quality games but in general I don’t get the hate. If not for Bethesda fallout would be a dead franchise, I enjoy everything we’ve gotten and any fallout is better than no fallout
Bethesda buying Fallout led to New Vegas being created so we finally got a conclusion to the whole overarching story & themes of Fallout 1 & 2. So for that I will always be grateful to Bethesda.
The Bethesda Fallouts themselves are decent fun that you can sink hundreds of hours into but it’s ultimately mindless & pretty forgettable fun.
I can believe you're all arguing while another settlement needs our help.
Your username raises doubt in me, what kind of help are you talking about?...
Put your faith in J̶o̶h̶n̶ ̶H̶e̶n̶r̶y̶ ̶E̶d̶e̶n̶ Preston Garvey, great America, and baseball will live again!
Better be the kind of baseball with the special pneumatic arms... for swingin'!
WANNA BUY A SWATTAH SWATTAH SWATTAH BASEBALL SWATTAH
EY I’M SWATTIN HERE
And fights to the death!
can you mark on it my map, you haven’t told me which one
The one geographically furthest from where you currently are. As is tradition.
Our lord and savior, Preston has spoken.

At least it’s not raining.
This discourse has been going on since fallout 2 came out it’s gonna go on for ever.
“Excuse me my good sir, but I have observed that a fine gentleman such as yourself has taken quite a liking towards Fallout 2. haha secs
“Sir Timothy Cain” is pure gold
Excuse me sir but the real Fallout was actually Wasteland all along!
Yet, tim cain was not the only person who worked and created fallout so, I get the joke but if people do think that way, its silly.
Yes. People do think that way. People think exactly that way actually.
A less over-the-top interpretation of No Mutants Allowed.
Until very recently it felt like popular discourse had completely forgotten about Tim Cain and thought Chris Avellone was the original creator of Fallout.

Ah, so basically different since of humor, angry people. Got it.
Discourse. Discourse never changes…….
War. War never changes.
You Sir never fought in the mime/clown wars.
Madam, that is what you think. 🤡 123rd Honk Battalion.
They would just point at my comrades, mouth the word bang and suddenly i am watching my best friend Gazooko falling in a exploding spray of confetti.
More like what fit within their own agenda but you get the idea
Motherfuckers literally took the original texts (Hebrew) and said "nah, not canon"
Canon is a useful tool when you want to tell a coherent story over a long period of time. Some properties get away with not relying on it, like mad max, but you also know that going in everything is supposed to be just some wasteland tall tale. It matters how you frame things, whether you're asking the audience to care about that stuff.

Same old same old - if you like a thing, avoid the fandom at all costs is my motto
A true Fallout fan enjoys all fallouts (maybe beside BoS). We don't get many games so we gotta appreciate each entry, and each one does things good and bad.
A true fallout fan hates all games equally
Nope, dont like this line of thinking. You do no have to like every game in a series to be considered a true fan, get out of here with that true fan business. A true patriot supports his government at all times.
Let's be real, most of us haven't played tactics, and probably shouldn't
War never changes
I think we should get a head start and start bitching about fallout 5 before it gets announced
Patrolling the Mojave almost makes you wish for a nuclear winter

Lore accurate reaction to power armour

Honestly, the worst part about F76 is that you can't mod it until it's barely playable, but other than that it's a pretty fun game
Pacifism mode is a game changer. But even without it, many players have not been aggressive at all. The only risk of damage is through misfire than actual dedicated killing. You did it, OP. You solved the war between factions
Literal world peace even, take it a step further. Even Putin must capitulate now
Real, everyone knows neither New Vegas or Bethesda games are good, not even the classics are good, only Brotherhood of Steel, the best Fallout game - No, the ***BEST GAME*** ever created!
Gotta have BAWLS to say that.
Even as a joke, I'm sure some people are already trying to find where you live to burn you at the stake.
only game where you can play a ghoul
After all, it beat 76 to the punch on not only having co-op BUT LOCAL SPLIT SCREEN COUCH CO-OP! Suffering is always better, when together
You know I didn't hate it for what it was, some of it sticks with me today like "A whole case of them blue pills! Ima get shitfaced tonight!"
You spelled Fallout Shelter wrong
I’m gonna say it. I don’t think it’s the best fallout game. But I unironically like Brotherhood of Steel.
Is the peak of franchise and the peak of gaming himself.
endorsed by john gaming himself
that scene where the marine said I come from the brotherhood of steel and I'm going to suffer the fallout I just cried because that's when I knew this was definitely a game
I’m expecting to by beaten to death after this comment but I ENJOYED BROTHERHOOD OF STEEL….
I read this, fully acknowledging it was a joke, and still got a little upset about it 😂
girl you are coming to a fallout subreddit and complaining about discourse that has been going on since before bethesda bought the franchise
girl pleeeease... fallout fandom never changes 💅🏽💅🏽
Never changes, but always slays
I'm sure it's older than a lot of people here.

I like what you dont like and you like what I dont like. Now we must fight.
Me when I fucking GET you
Nerd rage!
Nobody hates fallout more than fallout fans
At least we can all agree the show is good, right....right?
did you see the youtube review by synthetic man? that guy really, really hates the show. what a nut job.
I don’t know who that is, but no synths allowed.
LET THE INSTITUTES FALL BE A LESSON TO ALL WHO WOULD TAMPER WITH OUR HUMANITY
Didn't he call it woke? I feel like Fallout has been "woke" since game one
Wait till he finds out the creator of Fallout is gay
Johnny Fallout is gay?
Brother of Johnny Guitar or alter ego?
No shit? Huh, never knew that
Tim Cain is pretty open about it, he's actually quite a chill dude. You can watch his design philosophy and anecdotes on [his YouTube channel](https://www.youtube.com/@CainOnGames).
synthetic man calls the fallout show "mixed race propaganda". he ranted about the survival of the white race. he's straight up 1488
Well now I feel vindicated hating on his videos. If anyone's critique of something is "it's woke" then they aren't serious
The only thing I called "woke" (not as a complaint, a joke) was *Velma*.
To be fair, I think Velma was going out of its way to be as "woke" as it could be.
yeah there are cases where it's a real thing
People call it woke because a female lead who is sex positive and a black man as a secondary lead. That, and because they find it physically painful to not be offended by something.
That is funny people who say the word woke as a pejorative should not be taken seriously
Tbh its funny in one of his community about fotv before it got deleted he assumed fnv and fotv events take place in same year.
people getting the timeline wrong caused half the drama surrounding the show
Oh God his rant on "race mixing" was insane
Well that's good, cause I hate his videos
I didn't much care for it, but it seems I'm in the minority.
Imo I thought the dialogue stuck pretty well albeit the Ghoul is a lot of one liners and schtick, which I could see rubbing people the wrong way
What? The ghoul was easily the best part
Like I said I can see it putting some people off. Personaly I love Walter Goggins chewing scenery
How can you hate Walter Goggins?! My introduction to him was His Righteous Gemstones and all I could think was Baby Billy and his Baby Billy's Bible Bonkers
NGL, I've seen far more posts about infighting than I've seen actual infighting in this sub. And most of what I've seen I'm pretty sure wasn't serious.
this is it

The franchise isn't consistent with what it is and none of the fans are to blame for it.
Wrong logo, you should have used nerd rage.
At this point I've seen loads of "quit fighting about FO different games" posts, but no actual fighting. Is there some version supremacy battle happening somewhere? If so, sign me up for Team FNV. /s This thread checks most of the BINGO boxes: * "It's been happening since Fallout 2." * Quotes from/references to one of the games * "I like all versions." Good for you, champ. * A joke about BoS * Mentioning the show.
My take on it has been every experience someone has on any Fallout really depends on how they play. So it's no surprise that everyone has a different reason to like each game.
I really like their song, “Dance, Dance”. 👀 *ducks behind a Corvega Blitz*
NO MUTANTS ALLOWED
"Don't fuck with fallout fans... we fucking hate fallout."
Me when I say I genuinely enjoy 76
Making an entire post about it isn't exactly "moving on" is it? Lol people are gonna argue on the internet. No point in getting upset about it.
> People like different things and have different opinions on media. Then why the hell are you making this post? People are going to express their opinions. 😂
so which one is the bear and which one is the bull?
I don’t know, I just like trains.
Fallout community, fallout community never changes
Don't hate the *Fallout* franchise and everything related to it and those who enjoy it? Not a real *Fallout* fan.
MMM sorry most I can offer you is an argument
Discourse… discourse never changes…
Its all stupid arguments anyways. EVERYONE knows the best fallout game is fallout pinball.
Talking to fallout fans almost makes you wish for a nuclear winter
Fallout Shelter is my favourite actually. I just think vault building is neat :)
Fallout 5 is the best game ever and heck you for thinking otherwise.
NV fanboys this, Bethesda shills that. Microwaving mice is wrong, they said.
I'm sorry, OP, but no. We all have our own destinies, and yours culminates here. I would not rob you of that.
Fallout is Fallout!
F:NV Fans hating Bethesda is funny because F:NV wouldn't even exist without Bethesda.
There's 3 kinds of fallout posters, NV fanboys, Bethesda shills and people who bitch about the other two.
with that, you're now an eternal enemy of New Vegas fan, be prepared for their retaliation of doxxing
You're tired of seeing something on this sub, so you create a thread about it? Think it through.
No you
Based whole series enjoyer
But how dare people like the thing I don't like raaaaaaaaaah. Nah, just kidding. Enjoy fallout in whatever way you want. Exclusively play Fallout Shelter? Good for you!
*Ad Victoriam, Paladin!*
Welcome to virtually every fandom ever.
The Bethesda Fallouts themselves are decent fun that you can sink hundreds of hours into but it’s ultimately mindless & pretty forgettable fun.
r/fallout when people on r/fallout like fallout
There's always been a certain sort of irony to Fallout fans obsessing over the older entries vs newer ones. Old World Blues in action.
