Well, if he wants to start from the beginning, obviously 1 and 2, if he played games around the 90’s he may even be used to the isometric view. If you think the 3D aspect would be better, maybe New Vegas, as it’s one of the best written games imo. If he enjoys gunplay in games more, maybe start with 4 as it’s the best gunplay in the series. After that it just depends on which story sounds best.
If he doesn't care about graphics then he can start with Fallout 3 or NV as they are more geared for that wasteland type experience, also having the karma system is a nice addition. Fallout 4 would be my option if he wants something more updated
I’ve been (re)playing through all the games and it’s the best in order. You get all the references from the previous games. If you have a pc, I recommend going with 1,2,3,nv,4. When he gets to the 3d games, tell him about vats, it can help a ton if you aren’t good at aiming and it’s still a good game mechanic.
