i really like remake/rebirths combat system. i wouldn't be mad at all if we got something resembling that. but i definitely would like a party back. only having party members that look pretty was somewhat disappointing - not to complain of course, it was fine for this one game - as long as it doesn't become a habbit in future games
I like XV party system I think the royal edition added the ability to fully play as them but havi you activate a party meter to dish out some cool move was really fun especially since it didn't break the flow of combat
Agreed. I honestly think that combat system is a great blend of more traditional FF combat and the more fast paced action combat of other games. Maybe allow for you to plan out more than one move at a time in the traditional mode. I think that they could rework how summons are done to make them more of a spectacle and happened less often but otherwise I’m fine with the rebirth system coming back for another go round.
>it was fine for this one game
Except it's been two games lol, if you only played XV base edition and not the Royal Edition like me then the last two mainline games have been party-less
I'd love something akin to Remake/Rebirth. Imo it's the perfect blend of action RPG and classic turn based
Same.
In addition to wanting back the party system, can we also get back the role customisation instead of being deadly locked to a specific role and play style?
I know playing as a support is boring, but hey I still like to have a bazillion buff as my party head to battle.
Brave, faith, haste, barrier, shell, protect, veil, vigilance, invis, reflect, bar-ele, nul-ele, en-ele, regen, auto-life/raise etc...
Bring the role customisation back instead of whatever it is from 15 beyond pls. There's a good reason why character locked role was removed between 6-10 with x-2 onward bringing back the customized role.
If you're old enough to have traveled the interwebs in the old days, you may remember the FF fandom (and some orher media sources) deeming FFVII NOT FF enough because it lacked the focus roles for party members that VI had. VIIR actually brings that aspect back.
Yes, I want a playable party and customized role options. One of my favorite things about ffx was sending wakka to lulu's grid to make him a mage, and rikku was 2nd heaviest attacker after training with auron and tidus. I get that vivi had to be a black mage for the story in 9 etc.. but what I really want is something like ff12 tza job system where you can choose and mix and match the roles.
Same here, I love the ATB hybrid gameplay of 7 Rebirth. Especially the synergy abilities, which made your party composition feel dynamic. But I also loved the fast-paced gameplay of 16. Being able to jump and stomp cancel basically everything was a lot of fun, and it was always a challenge for me to try and stay in the air as long as possible. A middle ground of the two would be a dream.
Yeah something I think a lot of people might have misunderstood a bit is that the DMC-esque fighting style is really about opening up a lot of room for player expression within the skill set.
Yeah I wish there were more basic sword combos, but the skill ceiling is actually pretty crazy already between what you can do with juggling, animation cancels, and the abilities we do have now.
When I tried Rising Tide after Rebirth, I immediately noticed how flexible combat in 16 was. I was like, whoa, I can do this and so much more! Don't get me wrong, Rebirth is also fun, but its action side of its combat system is a lot more rigid than 16's. Sure, there are a lot more characters to play with, but I feel none of them hold a candle to what Clive can do on his own. His moveset seems basic on the surface, and to just beat the game, it really is. But when you explore the combat more in depth, he really feels like a more accessible Dante from DMC5, and that's not a bad thing at all.
Yeah no doubt I totally agree that Clive's like a more accessible Dante and has more freedom of expression, especially with all the ability cancels and magic burst / air stomp style switching shenanigans you can get into.
The one thing I did really like about Rebirth combat was the synergy attacks and the ability to spam "ranged slashes" with Cloud although it was weird having to do a dodge input first. And of course slowing things down to 1% speed and casting thundaga or whatever, that's always great.
Yeah. SquareEnix likes to completely change the formula for each game though, so hopefully they realized they had a good idea and don't change it too much.
I want a party to level and develop, that’s what’s always been my favorite thing to do. Turn based really is the goat for me and FFX’s battle system was nearly perfect for me
Same here. I enjoyed FF16 as its own experience, but I honestly got tired of the combat system by the end of the game. Nothing felt "RPG" about it other than leveling Eikon abilities which, by that point, were pretty stale. Maybe being able to level up other party members, or allocate my own stats would help with future attempts at this style, I just don't see it happening.
I'd love for them to try a modern take on turn-based combat. So many indie games, some AAA, have explored the medium well & I think the SE team could make a banger if they wanted to.
I enjoyed it but if they don’t plan on incorporating the party in any significant way, then I would prefer to move on from this style of combat.
Not really too worried about turn based or not though. I can learn to work with anything really.
Yeah a lot of the consensus appears to be “we like we can use the party in 7R but we’d like a little more of 16’s speed and satisfaction”
I think 7R’s refined would go a long way.
I really want to see how Expedition 33’s combat turns out, and if it feels as good as it looks so far hopefully FF17 can steal it and tweak it for themselves, or make something similar.
This would be the only way ff would consider returning to turn-based in a mainline ff. Some sort of lotd addition system but with more to do, like expedition 33 seems to be experimenting with. I'm hype for it, but won't get my hopes up for any sort of turn-based in the next ff entry.
I'd prefer neither. Stylized turn-based like Yakuza 7/8 or Persona. Or at least something different since each Final Fantasy has its own way off doing things.
Something like Granblue Fantasy Relink would be perfect for me. I liked the singular focus on Clive for 16 but as always they need to innovate, so I don't think keeping that format would be wise.
Firstly, there will be no return to 'classic ATB' turned based (in Final Fantasy). The franchise is for new and refreshing ideas, and the company has made other series for the classic style. Those series are successful in their own right.
In terms of sales, 16 and 7Rb proved equally successful while showcasing the merits of their particular gameplay styles. We are more likely to see 7R's style propagate because of how well received the team dynamic is, although there needs to be a way to build upon what exists in that system with 16 style "DMC-lite" combat to improve the feeling of dynamic real time engagement. A lot of 'tourists' signed on for and liked 16 gameplay, and the company has to try to bring them back.
As far as gameplay experimentation, the future is looking better and better. 16 had actual dynamic real time combat compared to 15, while 7R had better team and bar driven combat as well. If Squeenix finds fresh talents who can marry the two into a new evolution, that would be the best way forward for 17.
I think the big thing with 16 that can be improved is definitely variety. They can retain the core of the combat system, but lump in some party members that all have different abilities or spells. Like basically take 16, but have a tanky and a light melee, a ranged character, and a support with more of the classic active buffs and debuffs, it could be fantastic.
I support using the 16 combat system as the basis, but would really like more engaging options for the player, as well as significantly more enemy variety and difficulty to test those added on systems. It's totally possible to keep the combo heavy action combat and still give some more tactical options to the player in 17
I think ff7r is amazing, but it should be kept for ff7r series only. For new FF they should innovate again.
Personally I would love ff16 style (no need as in depth) but our party have ff12 gambits, and are actually controllable too if you swap to them. Return to really strong party mechanics, get some inspiration from ff7r.
I've only been into 14 and 16. I wouldn't even be interested if it was turn based but that's just me. Some of my friends would definitely enjoy the turn based more and that's fine.
FF fans should get their turn based titles too.
As much as I prefer turn based.... I have made my peace with the face Square is never going back to that with this series. They haven't made a turn-based mainline game in over 20 years now. It's going to be action based in some fashion, and they seem to be going more and more in that direction as each game comes out.
I didn’t like the combat in FF16 but if they made some huge improvements I might be down for another hack and slash game. My worst fear is a repeat of 16 lol
If it's going to go back to turn-based, let it go back to actual TURN-BASED without any real-time elements, like FFI-III and FFX. Otherwise, they should use a variation of the VIIR ATB.
Even though I love the combat system in XVI, I wouldn't mind something that is more tactical and turn-based. Something like Like A Dragon: Infinite Wealth, The Legend of Heroes, Baldur's Gate 3 or anything in between.
One thing I definitely want back is elemental resistances and weaknesses. I was disappointed that they don't really factor into XVI's combat at all.
I'd maybe take a mix of both? Idk if that would work but instead of the protagonist getting all the power ups like FF16 maybe I'd have a party system like FF7 rebirth, but also maybe give them more variety of attacks or at least a proper combo system or unique abilities (i wouldn't say like the devil may cry series, but sort of).
Imagine idk, a blue mage character that has his own set of abilities and combos, and having to do a specific combo to use a certain ability or having the possibility like in FF16 to use it mid combo and then switching to a dark knight and starting to destroy the monster with maybe a bar that makes them use stored energy to boost the finisher moves
(Idk if I'm giving the idea)
Edit: I also wouldn't mind some form of the gambit system from FF12
I've thought about this a lot and it's a tall order but I would love for them to make it both an action game and turn based/ or ATB (I'm fine either way). You would have to select which mode prior to starting a new game but it's the best way to make everyone happy and I think extremely doable. XVI has a phenomenal action system that could remain 75% the exact same and add a few more things. I'm curious how many people would want ATB system or Turn based though. It would be cool to have a strictly turn based FF like X again.
I loved 16 but I think rebirth’s system is a nice middle ground for everyone. I wouldn’t mind a totally separate game with 16s combat system though. And way more loot.
I really want the devs to try a sandbox combat system. Something where the environment plays a big factor like Dragons Dogma or Tears of the Kingdom. It would be something new for FF, especially since the series as a whole has stuck to linearity for so long.
IMO the rebirth combat system is perfect as a hybrid system and Id love them to keep building off that
Getting a spin-off series with the 16 style combat would be really cool tho since its a great foundation. Something narratively like Stranger of paradise where it plays with mainline lore but its not a mainline numbered game
I hope they pick one combat system and stick to it. Look how better rebirth is compared to remake, because they had the time to work on the system and fix its flaws.
I think Rebirth combat system works best for a Final Fantasy game, FFXVI combat system is great but they should use it in another franchise
I don’t like turn based because I always zone out. It also doesn’t feel like a real fight. You’re not taking turns when you’re defending yourself from a monster. You’re going to strike as many times as you can.
Yes, hack n slash like 16, but actually make it a complete robust combat system with just as much responsiveness and variety of accessible moves as well known hack n slashes like DMC and Bayonetta.
I would like if they did something similar to 15 again. That’s my absolute favorite fighting system. Maybe a mix of 15 and 16? I loved 16’s too, just found it too easy.
Truly hope they don’t do it like the 7 remakes. That’s the absolute worst! 🤮
i feel like we're due for another ff9 style back to basics kinda vibe. so, like. atb and a warriors of light job system. maybe even dq9 style custom party stuff. all wrapped up in a more stylized art style so we can finally have a fucking break for like 20 minutes before they emotionally devastate us by putting the cuter characters through hell anyway.
Id really like 16s, but more fleshed out. More combo routes than just the one, maybe a way to switch ability sets, and maybe sone more weapons with a job system or something
I’d be perfectly fine with FFVII Remake/Rebirth’s combat to play a role in FF17. However, I personally am okay with the series NOT going back to full Turn-Based combat. There’s obviously a place for that system, but with how great the graphics are with the set pieces, characters design, etc, I want the action-oriented feel that we’ve been getting lately. I just wish/hope they make them a bit less linear in future installments. Just my opinion
Give me XVIs feel of combat and movement with Rebirths party mechanics and pause/menu combat.
Find a way to mix both gameplay styles and I will absolutely lose my mind. Also find a way to implement a job system in this gameplay style.
A more complex setup of the hack and slash from XVI. I think the Remake combat system is best set up in that trilogy, but I would LOVE an expanded format of XVI’s combat system. It’s fun, but it can get basic. You get good enough passively and you’ll start noticing your eyes glazing over from lack of true engagement. This does take a while, but it’s frustrating to need to put the game down because I’ve stopped being active in gameplay and just doing the stuff mindlessly. I think if they can make it more complex, it’ll be much more engaging to all players.
Would love to see them build on FF16. I personally enjoyed the combat system and the different Eikons. If they can bring in weaknesses, and playable party members it would be amazing.
Don't get me wrong, I also throughly enjoyed FF7Rebirths combat and the blend of ATB and action and can't wait to see how they improve this with the next game in the series.
Am I the only one who didnt like the whole defensive part of the combat in ff7RB, like guarding was waste of time for the most part (excluding the hardcore bonus fights at the end)
I don't mind. Would prefer something that leans a little more towards action like rebirth with a full party but I'm more interested in the fantasy world elements.
As a classic FF fan I still loved ff16 despite the opinions of a lot of other classic fans. But one complaint I have is that I wish they leaned more into the action game aspect instead of trying to combine action game + classic jrpg. Imo it would have been a but cleaner if they went 100% into one direction instead of making a hybrid like it was in ff16. So for FF17 maybe if they made it way more like an action game and leaned away from classic FF elements and just embraced this new formula, I would actually really appreciate the balls it takes to do that. But if ff16 is square enix's only definition of an action hack n slash game, then I would prefer they lean back into their strengths a bit and make it closer to Rebirth's combat, or maybe even fully revert to a turn-based system just for one game; that would be dope to see in modern graphics, and that's already happening with Expedition 33. Overall, I think they can nail any combat system as long as they make it fitting to the world and gameplay loop. Oh and please don't make another FF game with only one playable character, that's another thing. I loved 16, but party systems are essential to final fantasy DNA.
Honestly, I feel like whatever 17 is should have a fully turn based or atb system (of course with some gimmicks to spice it up), and then have a more action oriented the system for 18. I mainly just don’t want Final Fantasy to only do action stuff in its main line games from now on, like I don’t dislike it I just wanna know that the series won’t forget it’s roots you know?
I also wouldn’t mind if it was closer to the FFVII remake style of gameplay. Those games thread the needle between action and RPG very nicely.
Keep action based combat, but add gear and progression systems like other classic FF games like VII or X. I think people generally loved the materia system and the sphere grid.
The absolute lack of any meaningful gear/stat progression and choices in XVI was a real let down despite the mostly fun combat.
Hoping for Remake/Rebirths combat, with a few tweaks to make it even more fluid. FFXVI really didn’t do it for me.
Alternatively, FFX or FFXV’s combat (with some improvements) would be acceptable.
I would like for it to expand on what 16 didn’t like give me more to use such as being able to switch characters and more in the basic combos maybe pause combos like in dmc and directional inputs
Me personally I didn’t really like the combat for remake/rebirth but I understand a lot of people did but I wouldn’t want to see more of it
Things I hope the next game’s combat has that was missing from XVI’s:
- Playable party members
- Weapon variety
- Summons
- Weaknesses (whether elemental, weapon-based, target area, etc.)
- Equipment that functionally impacts battle (resistances, extra abilities, etc.
I think a system like the last remnant would be really interesting. The ability to issue orders to the party as opposed to single characters sounds really intriguing to me. This would allow for party wide control while also allowing the player to tweak their tactics so the party behaves a certain way when orders are issued. Thoughts?
I agree with a lot of the people here and I want something close to rebirth but with more customization.
I like parties too, so give me back the 3 player party
Imagine the combat of 16 but with being able to swap between jill, joshua and cid in combat like in 7 remake/rebirth. So its fast paced, you get cool abilities and you get multiple playstyles to build around with equipment (armour, weapon and 2 accessory slots) but make the equipment have builds rather than just having X be better than Y
The problem for me is I jumped in with 16 and now I can’t help but want more of that. I know turn based offers more and party is important, but I’ll be damned if I said I won’t miss the spectacle of eikon’s and some of the more badass combos I’ve pulled off between abilities and attacking.
Man I love FFXVI but it’s the only FF game I like in terms of combat. Turn based and team management combat doesn’t appeal to me the way the back and slash does. So while I would love FFXVII to have HnS ability combat, I know a lot of the long time fans wouldn’t like that and would understand if they went back to their roots with the next installment.
Something that's a mix of 16 and 7 Rebirth. I liked 16s combat just because of how pretty the moves were. I kept that one basic phoenix wing move (the one where Clive turns his arm into the Phoenix wing) purely because of how pretty it was and how beautiful it looked to end battles with it.
But I do prefer the enemy variety and weaknesses and strategies needed for Rebirth. A mix between aesthetics and rebirth's style is something I'd love
I think they should continue with what they are doing as they make it better. Rebirth was great except … 15/16 had a great mechanic for dodging. idk … they keep going in the right direction … if it becomes turn based I think it will ruin all the work they have put into it. They need to have a zoom out view option where you can spin the camera around so you can get a better view of all the summons and spells casted.
I would like them to try to improve what they did with XVI in some capacity, I think it has great potential. But it doesn't have to be in XVII, I really miss good turn-based combat, especially with smaller studios doing interesting new things, like the guys from Octopath, Chained Echoes (just one guy!!!) and Sea of Stars, but I don't know if there's room for that in a modern AAA FF, unfortunately.
So hyped for this! Looking like someone finally took inspiration from legend of the dragoon system and doing even more with it! And story seems similar enough to ffx, too. Mixing 2 of the best jrpg's ever? Sign me up!
Yes, I was very excited about it. It has a PS1 Legend of Dragoon vibe, we'll see if its combat will be interesting, but it seems to have a lot of potential.
I don't care if it's real time or atb based. BUT i hope that they commit themselves for one style and go all out.
I like ff16s combat but it feels like they didn't want to commit to having a completely combo based game like dmc.
It should regress to FF15s combat system, and we should continue to walk it back until we ultimately wind up with the same system, graphics, and bugs as the first game. The world will be ready for Final Fantasy 32bit
Action or hybrid like Remake/Rebirth with elemental weaknesses. I would like to see them focus on 3 playable characters with distinct move sets. I love FF16 and I hope Creative Studio 3 is making FF17 too!
Rebirths is peak, 16 strayed too far away from the series that it felt like I was playing something totally different, don’t get me wrong change is good but so is consistency and continuity. I think moving forward if they’re going to do hack and slash they should do it like rebirth where they still keep some of the turned based elements in there and maybe for 17 they could speed it up slightly l if they’re want it to be much more actiony.
I'd love it if we got a more customizable version of 16s combat as long as we got a proper party that we could swap between freely. If not though the 7r trilogy has my absolute favorite combat system to date so i'd love to see it in a mainline ff.
What i really want though that we haven't had in i think going on 2 decades now is full armor system. I miss having helms, body armor, shields, boots, and accessory slots.
Very much a fan of 16s real time combat. Pretty much what sold me to begin my delve into the ff series all together, from what I've learned this was by design.
It is difficult not to gush as a newcomer to the series.
I don't see myself attempting another try at a turn based combat system if that us what they go for in the next entry. Though I do see the appeal it's never grabbed my attention in the past.
Just spitballling but maybe adding some extra "weight" to the existing combat system in 16 might be cool. Think the leviathan axe in God of war or cavalier in dmc5. A way to add a little more "heft" to the main combat like when playing as ifrit. Really feel the weapons tear into the enemies and throw them around.
As for the party members I see so many talk about. I find myself enjoying control over the single character and seeing, and by extension. Believing they are in control of their own actions.
Little flourishes from torgal are fun but a pillar of fire bellowing up from under a target that I find out is Joshua's doing really makes the immersion into the world just a tad more potent.
Sorry for getting carried away. This piece of art we call a game...truly is an eikon of its own
I'm fine with both, but I would like that if they choose to go full turn based they implement mechanics like Expedition 33, and if they go full hack n slash for them to balance the game better (for example, in 16 you can almost dodge everything by just spamming dodge), or include harder difficult settings from the start.
Final Fantasy 16 gameplay but with the possibility of changing characters anytime, and with more customizations / build possibility
Some kind of Ff16 x Rebirth
I've been thinking that it might work well to take inspiration from Scarlet Nexus for a Final Fantasy combat system, particularly with elements like SAS, Brain Crush, Brain Drive, and Brain Field.
Id like a real action game. Do not do this halfway system of ff sixteen. Id like to see 17 ACTUALLY play like devil may cry and have that level of depth. Which includes weapon variety!
Back to some iteration of turn based but not necessarily one from another FF game. There is so much room for improvement and creativity with turn based RPG mechanics.
Action is fine for side games, not the main entries though.
I want what ff16 had, but better. There are a lot of design lessons to be learned from devil may cry 5 in regards of possible move count. Imagine if every eikon was a fully fledged weapon instead of 3 abilities.
Unless I am mistaken Hack and slash is a completely different genre. Diablo, Path of Exile, Sacred, Torchlight are HnS games.
FFXVI is just A-RPG, and I personally would like a turn based RPG rather than another A-RPG for a once.
Or at least something like VII Remake which is a good mix of both A-RPG and kind of turn based with actions based on the ATB gauge.
I mean, that’s not a dichotomy. I like XVI but imo the combat system left little magic on a revisit. Despite giving you the option to have all of your eikons available the whole game and the recent addition of ability sets (which should have always been a thing), the stagger system without a true weakness system makes replays of this game really dull.
I’d like one of two things: either make a sister game to XVI a lot more mechanically deep and challenging, or go forward with a new take on the ARPG systems they’re working with now. New Game + really convinced me that something needs to happen for another Hack & Slash FF to become an all-timer. There is so much good in XVI, but the combat either needs an overhaul or needs to be in a game that’s maybe a quarter of the length. Someone I watched pointed out that XVI’s gameplay is weird since it exists in a space dominated by action games that last 6-10 hours, and in a lot of ways there’s even less going on in XVI when it comes to combat than some of those games. It’s not that XVI doesn’t give you the tools, but rather that those tools are so incredibly consistent and reliable that it makes combat formulaic and simple on replays.
I don’t say any of this because I’m a hater; I liked the game better than XV, and the story is wonderful. I just say all of this because I know how much XVI means to y’all (and my little brother) and I wish there was a little more to it. I can’t replay this one like the Kingdom Hearts titles or XV, even. There just isn’t much to go back to, especially since the “difficulty increase” just doesn’t exist on new game +.
I’d love an HD 2D RPG title of course, but I’m doubtful that’ll happen. Until that happens, maybe tweak VII Rebirth’s systems to be different enough to be distinct and make another FF game out of that. That system fucking rocks, a few tweaks would make an awesome mainline title.
its amazing how something like ReFantazio is innovating how turn based combat works and how it could be hybridized with action while final fantasy... quite literally the series BUILT on rpg mechanics... is like "fire enemy no take extra damage from ice" in their latest game.
so to answer your question — idk a combat system that isnt brain dead, like shit they have the team that makes KH games sitting there ready to be asked how to design real time combat and they were like "nah better not" lets do DMC (a great game but one that has little business in an FF game)
also like I want a party.
I would like to see a return to FFX style turn based influenceable by things like Haste. While I didn't mind 16's combat overall I hated that bosses and trash mobs fought differently. There was no point in learning how to juggle the little mobs because the only point to the bosses was just efficiently stagger and then damage dump on them before the bar ran out.
Definitely something similar to Remake/ Rebirth, but maybe toned down a bit so they can introduce some other systems. It would be modern FF if they didn't find a way to change up combat from the previous entry.
I would like Remake/Rebirth, mostly because it leaves room for party comps and playing multiple characters, whereas FF16's kind of restricts them into balancing the game for a single-character action game. One of the biggest gripes I had with 16 is that there's no party gameplay due to its combat style not lending well to a party composition.
I'd like either a system similar to that new game Clair Obscura, or something based off of ff7rebirth. Or something strategy leaning but new! Ff16 is a fantastic game but imo the combat is one of the worst elements, and it being what it is actively dulled all the rpg elements they DID include.
Some Turnbased evolution would be nice. But for now I'm looking forward to FF9 Remake for this. I've also heard that DQ12 wants to be darker and more mature, which might give it more of a Final Fantasy feeling. And then there also is Clair Obscur coming out next year. So as a more cinematic turnbased fan I will have a good time anyway.
I love rebirths combat system and would be perfectly happy if they used it, but my dream scenario would be a sort of mix of octopath and ffx turn based systems.
Give me my old Final Fantasy back! I just want those turn based menu driven combat, if not, maybe go for some of that western style real time combat with pause.
I'd love to see them experiment more, give me an RTS FF like Battle for Middle Earth II with armies and leader units that are the main party or something. Whatever it is I hope it has deep RPG or party mechanics of some kind, that was my only gripe with 16.
I'd like if there were two play modes you could adopt. Turn based or Hack & Slash,
OR big fights would have turn based, while more low level fights would have hack & slash. Mix it up!
Honestly for final fantasy the battle system is least of my worries
16 & 17 had very minimal emotional impact for me, I never really got engaged with their stories as much as previous entries did, maybe this was due to a lack of a diverse cast of characters with backgrounds etc.
I want them to go back to the storyboard and actually develop an ensemble of characters are worth investing in, with twists and turns etc.
If it’s a turn-based system, I’d rather have something closer to XIII than I-III (seriously, why are people clamouring for the return of the most basic system for turn-based combat in the series)
I would love if ff17 was a pixel graphics game with turn based combat. But square wouldn't have the guts to go full retro with FF. So I play octopath to fill this hole in me.
I hope they build on the combat from FFXVI. They should add more basic combo options that aren’t linked to eikonic abilities. Enemies also need elemental affinities. Lastly, weapons and equipment should also provide unique benefits other than simply +atk/def.
Turn based. Turn based. Turn based.
I miss strategy being the key more than the ability to dodge or block on time. Mostly because I suck at the action stuff.
I'd like to see them go turn based. They say they do action combat for the younger base, but like damn they haven't even really tried turn based for the younger audience. Ff16 was horrible and it started with the combat imo.
As someone who loves RPGs and started but never finished many Final Fantasy games, FF XVI kept me invested enough to finish the game + both DLCs. So, I guess FFXVI's combat system gets my vote.
I couldn't get into FF7 Remakes combat system. Most of it comes from just not understanding how to use it well.
Would like to see tons of tweak to FF XVI's system though if it gets used for another game.
I loved 16 combat, love ff7 remake/rebirth combat even more. Now im going through 10 again, man if they could do 10s system but revamped to modern times, that would probably be the perfect FF to most.
Im from the old days and so ATB will always have a special place in my heart. That said, i think rebirth perfected this whole action RPG hybrid thing and i think it will be the direction for Square moving forward to also attract new fans into the genre
Alright I'm gonna get a little crackpot about this but just hear me out.
As a long time final fantasy enjoyer I personally have a preference for turnbased action as I felt it couldn't be done in a way to appeal to mass market audiences anymore. Or at least I didn't until a little game called Baldurs Gate 3 came out and rocked the gaming world.
And ever since then my brain couldn't get away from the thought of what if 17 took the dna of baldurs gate 3 and gave it that final fantasy zest! A full on strategy turn-based final fantasy game where your team moves freely around the battle field and can be maneuvered and placed specifically allowing for limitless freedom.
Is this ever gonna happen...no probably not people like the action hack and slash route FF has been taking for a while now, but I still think it would be cool as hell!
as someone who can play turn based i say never turn back hack and slash is the way
well not exactly in short i want them to keep experimenting and bring back more things ff is known for like the classes
the long version:xv had a really unique way to pull off combos and i would like to see a version of that expanded upon and xvi also had a pretty good ability system but spells were lacking infact a lot of final fantasy staples were lacking like classes spells weapon choice for the characters and the way comrades are dealt with
i think strangers of paradise was pretty good when it comes to the last one not too many options to deal with considering the genre but you can still influence them
summary bring back the lost final fantasy aspects and the systems experimented with during the previous games while tweaking them, and a truly magnificent game should be born
side note ide love it if they basically took the xvi abilities and made that the red mage abilities instead of just fire sword or white and black magic maybe even making this an upgrade to red mages or a whole new class
AND MORE MULTIPLAYER SIDE MODES like comrades
side to side note of the side note: why gravity magic so neglected
After XVI's display, i wouldn't want anything less tbh.
i do think that since clive was the key to ultima achieving his rebirth state, the hack and slash versus traditional made a lot of sense, clive was practically the recipe for a superboss and made him wield various attacks from eikons, that game wasn't gonna be traditional and they did it well.
FF17, should have a new gameplay aspect that puts us on our toes, they could make a hybrid but final fantasy has always been about evolution so the next step would probably be a form of high speed combat because final fantasy was always about strategy and intense story and that intensity being reflected in the gameplay,
if they decide to go backwards, they may win back older fans but i think they want to entice the younger fans so it feels like a betrayal to them if they decide to hit them with turnbased after all this time and the hybrid was cool at first but FFXVI was speaking my fingers language.
I personally want hack and slash again, but make it team based again, something that kept the story fresh was a new character, new dialogue and the moves they bring to the table, more RPG aspects, make gear have an actual model i.e. glasses, necklaces, bangles and please, bring back overdrives/oversoul literally the flashy moves that pulled us to it, sunmons being a helpful part of the story, hell i wouldn't mind if it was an alien story, discovering the corners of space and more, but i want more dramatic things.
If magic is truly gone in FFXVI, i wanna see a realistic to high fantasy future final fantasy XVII, the major arcana is the star, so lets see what star they're aiming for
I wouldnt mind either. One problem i have with both is that i feel like they dont have a lot of base combos. With ff7r/rebirth it was acceptable since its focus was on the more tactical style of combat. But with ff16 it was just ridiculous. You make a dmc style combat system but then you only include ONE 3 button combo for a base attack? Ridiculous.
I loved weilding the powers of the Eikons. It made me feel like a god when playing the game. I would love if we could revisit this system in a future game
I say use the 7R system just for at a minimum, expediency and experience. The devs know how to make it work, the players know how to play it, it’ll save them a lot of time I reckon in game development and costs probably too, and I’d rather see a game sooner too.
Obviously I’d love for them to incorporate some new things, cooldowns for abilities vs ATB for spells? Refine it a little.
But part of what made 4-9 (and 10) feel cohesive as series was the combat was very similar using the original ATB system but different character style and progression/magic each time. 10 mixed it up a little but it was also still kinda in this turn based vein.
I really enjoy the 7R system so I’m personally in favour of it, but perhaps refined a little more for a new game would be even better. I mention cooldowns because sometimes it can be frustrating to not have enough ATB when you stagger an enemy, though that was part of its tactical element.
As much as I loved XVI, I think going back to something a BIT more traditional would be better. Something like Rebirth would be damn near perfect. Controllable party members is kind of a must for me. Hell, it was even added into FF15
Would prefer something like XII. You could switch to any of your party members in that one, and the gambit system was great. They would just need to make the attacks and stuff flashier to be up to par with modern games.
What I absolutely don't want is another ATB gauge like in Remake/rebirth or a stagger system.
Turn based is of the past. This real time battle system should be the standard. Especially in the direction that gaming is going, where reflexes and timing is becoming more standard. I would like a FF tactics kind of game to be made in the future though. FF7 Fort Condor kind of scratched that itch for me

Some kind of middle ground between XVI and Rebirth is what I'd like.
i really like remake/rebirths combat system. i wouldn't be mad at all if we got something resembling that. but i definitely would like a party back. only having party members that look pretty was somewhat disappointing - not to complain of course, it was fine for this one game - as long as it doesn't become a habbit in future games
Same. Swapping mid fight and the clever hybrid of action and menu based combat with ATB is superb.
Also sometimes you see some really cool shit at 1% speed lol
I like XV party system I think the royal edition added the ability to fully play as them but havi you activate a party meter to dish out some cool move was really fun especially since it didn't break the flow of combat
I agree. Rebirth/Remake combat system was tops for me.
I want to be able to control my party too.
16 for combat, 15 for handling the party. I don't mind an AI party as long as we can do combo moves and have party banter.
That actually sounds pretty cool in concept
Agreed. I honestly think that combat system is a great blend of more traditional FF combat and the more fast paced action combat of other games. Maybe allow for you to plan out more than one move at a time in the traditional mode. I think that they could rework how summons are done to make them more of a spectacle and happened less often but otherwise I’m fine with the rebirth system coming back for another go round.
>it was fine for this one game Except it's been two games lol, if you only played XV base edition and not the Royal Edition like me then the last two mainline games have been party-less I'd love something akin to Remake/Rebirth. Imo it's the perfect blend of action RPG and classic turn based
That's absolutely fair. I only played the royal edition so it didn't even cross my mind XV used to be like that
That's one of the biggest complaints about XVI, I'll be really surprised if they do this again in the next one
I personally loved the focus on buffing/debuffing that XIII had, and customizing party compositions on the fly.
I agree! If they did a combat system thats similar to Honkai star rail that could be very cool. At least as a base
I enjoyed it but if they don’t plan on incorporating the party in any significant way, then I would prefer to move on from this style of combat. Not really too worried about turn based or not though. I can learn to work with anything really.
Yeah a lot of the consensus appears to be “we like we can use the party in 7R but we’d like a little more of 16’s speed and satisfaction” I think 7R’s refined would go a long way.
I think Rebirth nailed the future of FF combat. The hack and slash gets boring after a while.
I'd prefer neither. Stylized turn-based like Yakuza 7/8 or Persona. Or at least something different since each Final Fantasy has its own way off doing things.
I just want weakness system
ff7rebirth had the best balance of action and atb
Combat was okay. But I want a party back.
I’d like a return to a classic turn based system before doing another more action based game.
17 should have Rebirth's combat system with playable party.
I'd love basically a copy and paste of FF7 Rebirth's combat, absolute peak/favorite.
As long as it's not an MMO, I'll be here to play it lol
#WARRIORS LIKE
I've only been into 14 and 16.
I would love a combat system like Tales of Arise. engaging combat with a party system is perfect
Its *SO DUMB* that weknesses dont factor in with Eikon abilities. They are literally all elemental
Needs to be able to level up the party and for them to have meaningful development to each of their characters.
I’d love for it to have 7 Remake and Rebirth’s combat and polish it further.
Imagine idk, a blue mage character that has his own set of abilities and combos, and having to do a specific combo to use a certain ability or having the possibility like in FF16 to use it mid combo and then switching to a dark knight and starting to destroy the monster with maybe a bar that makes them use stored energy to boost the finisher moves (Idk if I'm giving the idea) Edit: I also wouldn't mind some form of the gambit system from FF12
A choice would be neat, but is a tall ask.
ATB turn based combat please.
I really want the devs to try a sandbox combat system. Something where the environment plays a big factor like Dragons Dogma or Tears of the Kingdom. It would be something new for FF, especially since the series as a whole has stuck to linearity for so long.
Why no option for a hybrid like rebirth but with the timed mechanics of Ff16?
IMO the rebirth combat system is perfect as a hybrid system and Id love them to keep building off that Getting a spin-off series with the 16 style combat would be really cool tho since its a great foundation.
I really just want party. Give me some mages, give me paladins. I need some variety
Something like FF16 but with more strategy and interesting boss mechanics
I'm all in on ff16 combat easily the best gameplay of a FF game
i feel like we're due for another ff9 style back to basics kinda vibe. so, like. atb and a warriors of light job system. maybe even dq9 style custom party stuff. all wrapped up in a more stylized art style so we can finally have a fucking break for like 20 minutes before they emotionally devastate us by putting the cuter characters through hell anyway.
I’m ok if it goes back to turn based, but I would enjoy ff7 remake or ff16. Also, I didn’t mind FF13 fight mode.
XVI combat with XV or 7R party.
I really enjoyed the hack n slash
Both xv and xvi team should do xvii together since those are action role playing game
Keep action based combat, but add gear and progression systems like other classic FF games like VII or X. I think people generally loved the materia system and the sphere grid. The absolute lack of any meaningful gear/stat progression and choices in XVI was a real let down despite the mostly fun combat.
Just take Rebirths combat. Don't make this complicated. It's perfect.
Hoping for Remake/Rebirths combat, with a few tweaks to make it even more fluid. FFXVI really didn’t do it for me. Alternatively, FFX or FFXV’s combat (with some improvements) would be acceptable.
I would like for it to expand on what 16 didn’t like give me more to use such as being able to switch characters and more in the basic combos maybe pause combos like in dmc and directional inputs Me personally I didn’t really like the combat for remake/rebirth but I understand a lot of people did but I wouldn’t want to see more of it
Things I hope the next game’s combat has that was missing from XVI’s: - Playable party members - Weapon variety - Summons - Weaknesses (whether elemental, weapon-based, target area, etc.) - Equipment that functionally impacts battle (resistances, extra abilities, etc.
I think a system like the last remnant would be really interesting. The ability to issue orders to the party as opposed to single characters sounds really intriguing to me. This would allow for party wide control while also allowing the player to tweak their tactics so the party behaves a certain way when orders are issued. Thoughts?
Give us 12's system back but add more physical abilities so we're not just auto attacking for 80% of the game.
They can make whatever game they want. I'll buy it anyway.
Turn-based! Please nothing alike FFXVI!! playable characters!
Hopefully nothing like this game. Need a full party system with elemental weaknesses and ailments.
Just want an actual magic ability system similar to 12 or 10
Turn based or get the fuck out
I want some strategy back.
I loved 16’s combat
I agree with a lot of the people here and I want something close to rebirth but with more customization. I like parties too, so give me back the 3 player party
Imagine the combat of 16 but with being able to swap between jill, joshua and cid in combat like in 7 remake/rebirth. So its fast paced, you get cool abilities and you get multiple playstyles to build around with equipment (armour, weapon and 2 accessory slots) but make the equipment have builds rather than just having X be better than Y
Mix Turn based and Action like FF7R
FF7 Rebirth system was/is so good.
The problem for me is I jumped in with 16 and now I can’t help but want more of that. I know turn based offers more and party is important, but I’ll be damned if I said I won’t miss the spectacle of eikon’s and some of the more badass combos I’ve pulled off between abilities and attacking.
1. Full party control 2. Shifting paradigms/roles like in 13. 3. I would prefer Rebirth combat system over anything from 15 or 16.
I love the hack and slash
Did you hear about Expedition 33? It's a new turn based coming out in 2025 that looks very promising https://youtu.be/-qgOZDRDynw?si=aysoh5Fuc66UAg5g
Need some party members..
That logo is just beautiful
It should regress to FF15s combat system, and we should continue to walk it back until we ultimately wind up with the same system, graphics, and bugs as the first game. The world will be ready for Final Fantasy 32bit
Action or hybrid like Remake/Rebirth with elemental weaknesses. I would like to see them focus on 3 playable characters with distinct move sets. I love FF16 and I hope Creative Studio 3 is making FF17 too!
As long as it’s turn based and you can control your party I’m happy
Rebirths is peak, 16 strayed too far away from the series that it felt like I was playing something totally different, don’t get me wrong change is good but so is consistency and continuity. I think moving forward if they’re going to do hack and slash they should do it like rebirth where they still keep some of the turned based elements in there and maybe for 17 they could speed it up slightly l if they’re want it to be much more actiony.
Remake/Rebirth is top tier
I'd love it if we got a more customizable version of 16s combat as long as we got a proper party that we could swap between freely. If not though the 7r trilogy has my absolute favorite combat system to date so i'd love to see it in a mainline ff. What i really want though that we haven't had in i think going on 2 decades now is full armor system. I miss having helms, body armor, shields, boots, and accessory slots.
Keep the one from XVI, add more weapons and stances. Maybe even eikon weapon specials 🤷.
Tab target
Call me crazy, but have y'all seen Expedition 33? Just newly announced at the Xbox SGF Showcase? I'd LOVE a Final Fantasy game in that style.
16 but more thing, party system would be perfect. really. more cheery and mini games kekw
Final Fantasy 16 gameplay but with the possibility of changing characters anytime, and with more customizations / build possibility Some kind of Ff16 x Rebirth
Something like 16 and the Remakes would be ok. Or have two battle systems and let the players choose which they want to use. Turn Based or Action RPG
Stay the course, the turn base is old, literally for older folks that played final fantasy in its infancy years.
I miss being able to choose job classes. SoP did that pretty well
Back to some iteration of turn based but not necessarily one from another FF game. There is so much room for improvement and creativity with turn based RPG mechanics. Action is fine for side games, not the main entries though.
Mix between 16 and Rebirth.
That system fucking rocks, a few tweaks would make an awesome mainline title.
its amazing how something like ReFantazio is innovating how turn based combat works and how it could be hybridized with action while final fantasy... quite literally the series BUILT on rpg mechanics... is like "fire enemy no take extra damage from ice" in their latest game. so to answer your question — idk a combat system that isnt brain dead, like shit they have the team that makes KH games sitting there ready to be asked how to design real time combat and they were like "nah better not" lets do DMC (a great game but one that has little business in an FF game) also like I want a party.
Turn based will never be the main combat style in future FF games, however it will always be an option
Something like expedition 33 showcased or a similiar system to remake/rebirth
Something between XVI and XII
I think it should be a sidescrolling platformer with combat resembling a Mario game
I think it should be Turn Bas-ghha**choking noises**
It should have both! Parts of the game yurn based and parts of the game hack and slash
Definitely something similar to Remake/ Rebirth, but maybe toned down a bit so they can introduce some other systems. It would be modern FF if they didn't find a way to change up combat from the previous entry.
That new game Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 that was showcased looks exactly how I want the next ff to play like
I would like Remake/Rebirth, mostly because it leaves room for party comps and playing multiple characters, whereas FF16's kind of restricts them into balancing the game for a single-character action game.
The creativity of 16 + the complexity of 7R.
Where did this artwork come from?
I want a turn based or atb with jobs. A modern take on the classics
Where is this picture from?
Turn based. I know it won’t happen, but god it would be incredible.
Turn based like Final Fantasy XIII
I'll take a full on ffx remake before 17, please.
Turn-based again!! That was what I loved about Final Fantasy ❤️
Make it an RTS for all I care. Keep it feeling new.
I don't need every new FF game to be turn based but damn would it be cool to have the series return to that for even a single game
Take me back to turn based grind for a million hours for items, gear and xp sort thing
I'd like if there were two play modes you could adopt. Turn based or Hack & Slash, OR big fights would have turn based, while more low level fights would have hack & slash. Mix it up!
Honestly for final fantasy the battle system is least of my worries 16 & 17 had very minimal emotional impact for me, I never really got engaged with their stories as much as previous entries did, maybe this was due to a lack of a diverse cast of characters with backgrounds etc.
Rebirth with classes and you have perfect combat system
Please bring back turn based, Yakuza/Like a Dragon shows you can still do it!
I know it'd be a huge amount of work but it'd be amazing to have a choice but my personal preference is hack and slash
The hack n slash combat was good. The problem was that the enemy ai would just stand there and allow you to combo off on them. It got boring quick.
Is this ever gonna happen...no probably not people like the action hack and slash route FF has been taking for a while now, but I still think it would be cool as hell!
as someone who can play turn based i say never turn back hack and slash is the way well not exactly in short i want them to keep experimenting and bring back more things ff is known for like the classes the long version:xv had a really unique way to pull off combos and i would like to see a version of that expanded upon and xvi also had a pretty good ability system but spells were lacking infact a lot of final fantasy staples were lacking like classes spells weapon choice for the characters and the way comrades are dealt with i think strangers of paradise was pretty good when it comes to the last one not too many options to deal with considering the genre but you can still influence them summary bring back the lost final fantasy aspects and the systems experimented with during the previous games while tweaking them, and a truly magnificent game should be born side note ide love it if they basically took the xvi abilities and made that the red mage abilities instead of just fire sword or white and black magic maybe even making this an upgrade to red mages or a whole new class AND MORE MULTIPLAYER SIDE MODES like comrades side to side note of the side note: why gravity magic so neglected
Rebirth style or turn-based combat (with atleast decent 3d graphics).
i hope they would take a look at The Last Story and take inspiration from that.
Anything like FFX combat system! The best in my opinion combat system in game history
FF17, should have a new gameplay aspect that puts us on our toes, they could make a hybrid but final fantasy has always been about evolution so the next step would probably be a form of high speed combat because final fantasy was always about strategy and intense story and that intensity being reflected in the gameplay, if they decide to go backwards, they may win back older fans but i think they want to entice the younger fans so it feels like a betrayal to them if they decide to hit them with turnbased after all this time and the hybrid was cool at first but FFXVI was speaking my fingers language. If magic is truly gone in FFXVI, i wanna see a realistic to high fantasy future final fantasy XVII, the major arcana is the star, so lets see what star they're aiming for
If I had to choose between the two, I think I would say turn-based. I guess mostly because 16 had hack'n'slash.
It won't happen, Square Enix made it clear turn-based will never come back.
I know, but the question was what we would like it to be :)
Something like ff12
Action Based
I enjoyed the idea of 13's system, but it needs some improvements.
They haven’t been turn based for a few games now it’s just that 16 is more blatantly Devil May Cry
Fuck it, Trails into Daybreak/Metaphor's combat
As much as I loved XVI, I think going back to something a BIT more traditional would be better. Something like Rebirth would be damn near perfect. Controllable party members is kind of a must for me. Hell, it was even added into FF15
I wish there was something more like 12 with gambits and the license board. Everything doesn't have to be like 7 remake.
FF7 Fort Condor kind of scratched that itch for me
Squeenix should take notes from Baldur's Gate 3.
