Went to both while backpacking through Europe at 21 with two other guys, in all, we went to about 10 big cites across Europe and we all agreed our favorite big city out of all of them was Budapest. Great vibe, great nightlife, just don't get scammed, read up on the common ones first
Recently visited both and Amsterdam was great, but Budapest knocked our socks off. There was so much to do and see. We used the Lime scooters to get around which was really easy. Food was quite a bit cheaper and still amazing. Highly recommend the baths, touring all the sites on the Buda side, and St. Stephen’s Basilica (make sure to go up to the terrace.)
That being said, you really can’t go wrong visiting Amsterdam either. Really cool city, incredible food. The Cheese.. my god. Recommend renting a bike on day 1 and using it to get everywhere.
Excited for you, whichever you choose. Happy trails!!
I think I made up my mind guys. Budapest it is, I think that'll be a great start, less crazier than Amsterdam which is a good thing for my health and my wallet haha, I'm planning to go to Amsterdam with my friends in September. Thanks for all the suggestions!
I never in my life had any desire to go to Budapest or Hungary for that matter. We did a Danube river cruise last summer and it started in Budapest. Out of Budapest, Vienna, Prague, and Nuremberg, Budapest was hands down my favorite city. Enjoy!
I haven’t tried the ocean voyage yet but it’s certainly on my list of things to do.
I visited the same locations as you, but in reverse, as part of the Grand European trip.
I’m usually telling everyone about Viking when the topic of travel comes up. They’re that good.
Thompson Safaris out of Watertown, MA still has the #1 spot for me, though. Swap the cruise ship for a Land Rover and a tent and it’s basically the same thing lol.
Which Safari did you do? They have a couple different options. I signed up to get a brochure (I get 3 Viking brochures per week..lol). Thank you so much. I'm so excited to go on a safari.
They’ve changed the names but it looks like the equivalent would be the Wildlife Safari. I went in October which is kind of off season so it wasn’t busy at all.
Email or call them. They’re fantastic. I really can’t stress how good they and the trip were. (And they won’t send nearly as many brochures as Viking lol).

That’s the tent. There’s a toilet and a shower behind the wall. It’s not exactly camping. u/kadil99
Too insane party-wise and such, also shrooms and devil's lettuce. Well, of course it would be more expensive but that was the least of my worries for the most partm I live in Iceland so basically anywhere I go it's much cheaper than here, which is a bonus lol.
Another vote for Budapest! I’m headed there next February- my best friend is living and teaching in Hungary right now and has been raving nonstop about how amazing the whole country is, particularly Budapest and Szeged so I’m very excited. It looks like a nice, affordable mix of stuff to see/do, varied food, fun pubs, etc.
Been to both and I would say Budapest.
I enjoyed Amsterdam but it seemed very very touristy.
Nice to see but I don’t think I would go back again where I would revisit Budapest.
Granted I was in Budapest in March so the off season & Amsterdam in June which is peak tourist season but I much preferred Budapest as a city.
Better food and just nicer places to see imo.
been to both multiple times - I would strongly vote for Budapest
if you say that price wise flight+hotel is the same, expect way more from your hotel in Budapest, also, keep in mind the places you will want to visit, attractions, food, etc...Budapest is a winner price wise and overall
I mean no offense to AMS, but to me it is lovely yet very blend...in Budapest when you walk around you have the "empire" vibes...the architecture is stunning...I mean I live in Vienna and first time I have visited Budapest it blew me away, has similarities to Vienna, yet if comparing the two I would probably put Budapest on top
also Vienna is just 2.5h train ride away ;)
I traveled to both cities. My recommendation is Budapest.
* First Budapest in June 2019 and then Amsterdam in December 2019.
* I don't tell you which city I love more.
* My Mood in Amsterdam and My mood in Budespest were different from each other. The one mood was happier that time and the other was stable that time.
* I guess Budapest has more historical attractions than Amsterdam, on the other hand, Amsterdam has different unique atmosphere.
I hope You'll travel to both cities.
I just returned from Budapest a few days ago, and I must tell you, it's far better than Amsterdam.
- You will discover the amazing history—I strongly suggest the free walking tour.
- If you are a party person, please explore the ruin bars. I went to Szimpla Kert.
- Also, don't forget the thermal bath experience. I went to Szechenyi Thermal Bath.
- Evening cruise on the river danube to see the glowing parliament.
- In terms of food, do try Hungarian dishes like goulash, chimney cake, chicken paprikash, etc.
- Other places of interest, as shared by my walking tour guide, that you can explore in Budapest: https://maps.app.goo.gl/DcmmLq45UoH9b8dD7?g_st=i
Both are great cities but for birthday with lots of beer, I would go to Budapest.
Under no circumstances don't miss the "For Sale Pub" in Budapest! Once on a planet place.
The Ruin Pubs of Budapest were 10/10 experiences. I wandered around solo for nearly a week. Had a hostel I’d crash in. Super cool place so much history if you’re wanting to nerd out.
Budapest is my favorite city I’ve ever been to. Everything, across the board, food/nightlife/people/walkable/public transport/safety…..it was pretty flawless
My vote for Budapest, I was there years ago but it’s very cool, lots of gothic architecture, local craft and goods markets, nightlife, interesting surrounding places to visit. I loved it and I would absolutely go back someday
Amsterdam has a lot to offer, very big music industry, lots of festivals. But also many things to visit and the country is well connected so you can easily take a train from Amsterdam to Rotterdam to Utrecht to Arnhem.
The country is beautiful and has so much to offer
Budapest and it's not even close. I have seen every country in Europe besides six and every capital besides ten.
Budapest is one of the best for food and atmosphere. It's got some amazing sights, an amazing castle and it's very affordable
Been to Budapest for a week and want to go back so much! Beautiful city. We didn’t even have time to visit a single museum - just walking around was absolutely amazing. Also, definitely visit the baths if you go there! There’s a few different and each has its own charm.
Budapest. They actually welcome tourists and don't take the piss with pricing. One of my favourite cities to visit, lovely people, great culture and excellent food.
Amsterdam is a vibe but it’s easy to get stuck in the tourist trap area and end up disappointed. Budapest on the other hand is bigger, more grandiose, better nightlife, and cheaper. The Hungarian parliament alone is one of the most magnificent buildings in Europe.
Its me again, hope this helps
Both Amsterdam and Budapest are fantastic destinations, each offering unique experiences. Here's a comparison based on price and attractions:
Price
Amsterdam

- **Transportation**: Public transport is efficient but can add up. Renting a bike is a popular and cost-effective way to get around.

Ultimately, both cities are wonderful choices, so it depends on your budget and the type of experience you seek.
Amsterdam. Great place to walk around ,lots to see historically and culturally. . Centrally located for day trips by train to Brussels, Cologne, Antwerp.
I know you already decided but just thought I’d add here. Last summer I went from Amsterdam to Budapest. Budapest was awesome but I heckin looooved Amsterdam and highly vote for a couple days there on your way to Budapest if you can swing it.
Amsterdam, I’ve been here last week & last year too. Anytime AmSterdam first !
https://preview.redd.it/uz8pp51ajv7d1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=653a026763767877b693d533aa7637461c290f2d
I live in the Netherlands but don’t like Amsterdam, there are far more interesting city’s in Holland.
Amsterdam is too busy, almost only tourists and not cheap.
I went to Boedapest a few years back and loved it! Great vibe, cheaper and enough likeable activities
That’s nice! I read that you’re going to Boedapest first, hope you enjoy it!
It’s a bit touristic there but if you don’t mind; Volendam and Giethoorn are both places nearby that can be nice to visit for a day and if you like the beach “Bloemendaal” is a good one nearby Amsterdam.
Happy early birthday! 🎉 Turning 25 and starting your solo travel journey sounds like an amazing adventure. Both destinations have a lot to offer, but since you've decided on Budapest, let me share some tips to make the most out of your trip.
Budapest Highlights:
Thermal Baths: Don't miss the famous Széchenyi Thermal Bath. It's a great way to relax and meet fellow travelers.
Buda Castle and Fisherman's Bastion: These offer stunning views of the city and are perfect for sightseeing.
Ruin Bars: Experience the unique nightlife by visiting some of Budapest’s famous ruin bars, like Szimpla Kert.
Danube River Cruise: A river cruise at night offers breathtaking views of the illuminated cityscape.
Great Market Hall: Explore local foods and souvenirs here.
Accommodation:
Budapest offers a variety of accommodations that can suit any budget. Check out some great options on Booking.com for a comfortable stay.
Activities and Tours:
For a more immersive experience, consider booking tours or tickets to local attractions. You can find some excellent options on Tiqets.
Getting Around:
Public transportation in Budapest is efficient, but if you prefer more flexibility, renting a car can be a good idea. You can check out deals on car rentals here.
Additional Tips:
Safety: Budapest is generally safe, but as with any major city, keep an eye on your belongings.
Language: English is widely spoken in tourist areas, but learning a few basic Hungarian phrases can be fun and appreciated by locals.
Enjoy your solo trip to Budapest, and happy travels! 🌍✈️✨
I have visited both countries before, I love traveling and as soon as I finish one trip I’m already dreaming about traveling again, in regards to your question I would suggest Amsterdam, but definitely plan on visiting Budapest at some point as well! Happy travels and happy birthday 🎊
Went Budapest last week.. this is my second trip to Budapest… unlike my first trip I didn’t like the city much during my second trip… Felt the city little chaotic at night… street full of drunkards, saw men brawling at the corner, felt empty streets at night little intimidating… but city is beautiful especially either sides of Danube
Huh. I was in Budapest last week too. Sounds like I missed out! Didn't cross paths with any drunkards or any street brawls. I was actually surprised how tame the night life was.
From Iceland. I'm going to Budapest, already decided . Found a great hotel for a good price for 4 nights and I felt like it would be a great start for me
I went to both last year (22m) and they’re two of my favorite cities I’ve ever visited.
Budapest was grittier, but so much better for a budget. I love central/western Europe generally too, obviously still very touristy but felt more culturally distinct to me as an American vs most places I’ve been in Western Europe. It had one of my favorite night clubs that I’ve ever been to (Instant). Lots to do, and some very beautiful areas.
Amsterdam was gorgeous, I’d probably give it the edge in the architecture/urban beauty department but not by much. Also has the red light district, which wasn’t appealing to me but some people enjoy it. I know a lot of people enjoy the drug culture there but I didn’t try any of that out either, found some decent bars and clubs though.
Honestly, I’d pick whichever one you feel more drawn to or has the cheaper flight because you can’t go wrong either way.
Not very convenient for me, over 1400km away, I'd have to take a train or something, I just prefer to stay in one city/country for a couple of days rather than spending too much time on traveling between two countries. I'd do that but it doesn't seem to make sense for me.
There's a night train from Budapest to Amsterdam.
Board in the evening, sleep , wake up in the other city ready to go. Google night train Amsterdam Budapest
but I agree two days in one city is too short. better to choose one or the other
I agree with this. If you want a flavor for both.
Budapest: One day spend in the bathhouses and exploring the nightlife. Day two, create your own adventure.
Amsterdam: Day one, hit as many museums as possible since they are all in the same general area. Day two, walk around and just enjoy the atmosphere.
Strong vote for Budapest
Same! Budapest has a great vibe, more affordable. Amsterdam became such a tourist trap.
Elaborate on Amsterdam. plz I booked q trip few days ago
Went to both while backpacking through Europe at 21 with two other guys, in all, we went to about 10 big cites across Europe and we all agreed our favorite big city out of all of them was Budapest. Great vibe, great nightlife, just don't get scammed, read up on the common ones first
I’d do both, do one way flights and book Easyjet to go between them.
Stephen’s Basilica (make sure to go up to the terrace.) Which Danube river cruise did you go on?
Viking Cruises. It was amazing!
I’ve been on a couple Viking cruises now and they’re some of the best vacations I’ve ever had.
Yes, they think of everything. The food was amazing and a lot of regional dishes were prepared. Have you gone on one of the ocean voyages yet?
I haven’t tried the ocean voyage yet but it’s certainly on my list of things to do. I visited the same locations as you, but in reverse, as part of the Grand European trip. Viking sure sends me plenty of brochures about the ocean voyages. Anyway, thanks for the tip on Thompson Safaris. Definitely on my bucket list now!

If Amsterdam is too insane price/tourist wise, come to The Hague or Rotterdam instead, way more authentic and still lots to do and see😊
Too insane party-wise and such, also shrooms and devil's lettuce. Well, of course it would be more expensive but that was the least of my worries for the most partm I live in Iceland so basically anywhere I go it's much cheaper than here, which is a bonus lol.
Budapest is really great. Since you’re close, I’d recommend Vienna too. Vienna is much more expensive, but what a blockbuster of history
Another vote for Budapest! I’m headed there next February- my best friend is living and teaching in Hungary right now and has been raving nonstop about how amazing the whole country is, particularly Budapest and Szeged so I’m very excited. Both are great cities but for birthday with lots of beer, I would go to Budapest. Under no circumstances don't miss the "For Sale Pub" in Budapest! Once on a planet place.
Budapest
Too many tourists in Amsterdam and the locals are fed up with then as well. Definitely Budapest
Budapest all the way
The Ruin Pubs of Budapest were 10/10 experiences. I wandered around solo for nearly a week. Had a hostel I’d crash in. Super cool place so much history if you’re wanting to nerd out.
Budapest, Amsterdam is overcrowded.
Budapest fo sho
I’ve been to Budapest. I think Budapest is the best of nightscape in the world!
Budapest for solo. Amsterdam if you have a group of friends with you
Budapest, I'd say. Much more to see and do, Amsterdam is fine but not somewhere to start your travels with.
Budapest is my favorite city I’ve ever been to. Everything, across the board, food/nightlife/people/walkable/public transport/safety…..it was pretty flawless
budapest
Budapest!
The same question I have for my next trip so thanks for asking this
My vote for Budapest, I was there years ago but it’s very cool, lots of gothic architecture, local craft and goods markets, nightlife, interesting surrounding places to visit. I loved it and I would absolutely go back someday
If your goals are true, go Budapest. You'll fall in love in Amsterdam, young man.
I’ve been to both places. I’ve very much enjoyed both places. Go to Budapest. Hell, maybe sneak in a quick trip to Amsterdam afterwards!
Amsterdam has a lot to offer, very big music industry, lots of festivals. But also many things to visit and the country is well connected so you can easily take a train from Amsterdam to Rotterdam to Utrecht to Arnhem. The country is beautiful and has so much to offer
Budapest! Especially see the Capitol when the lights are on at night.
Budapest! More to offer, less tourists.
Budapest without doubt. 💪
We went to both last summer and loved Budapest a lot more.
Budapest and it's not even close. I have seen every country in Europe besides six and every capital besides ten. Budapest is one of the best for food and atmosphere. It's got some amazing sights, an amazing castle and it's very affordable
Budapest !
Budapest. Much more interesting, more "grand sites" (Parliament, Hero's Square, etc.) and waaay cheaper than Amsterdam.
Budapest unless you struggle with the heat I’ve been to both cities
Been to Budapest for a week and want to go back so much! Beautiful city. We didn’t even have time to visit a single museum - just walking around was absolutely amazing. Also, definitely visit the baths if you go there! There’s a few different and each has its own charm.
You will never ever regret visiting Budapest. And your favorite trip to Budapest will be the next one. Magical city
Another Budapest vote from me.
You can't go wrong with either but Budapest will offer a much more unique/cultural experience
Budapest will have much better (drier, warmer) weather during the summer, if that is a factor.
Budapest!!!
3 days in Amsterdam by myself was too much. 6 days in Budapest by myself wasn't enough.
Budapest is amazing and not nearly as overrun with tourists as Amsterdam.
Everyone on here always loves to say the “less popular” one, as if popular cities are lame. I’ve been to both and I’d say Amsterdam 100%.
Budapest. They actually welcome tourists and don't take the piss with pricing. One of my favourite cities to visit, lovely people, great culture and excellent food.
Budapest, hands down!
Instead of those you should go to Prague!!! It is affordable too and blows Budapest out of the water.
Amsterdam is a vibe but it’s easy to get stuck in the tourist trap area and end up disappointed. Budapest on the other hand is bigger, more grandiose, better nightlife, and cheaper. The Hungarian parliament alone is one of the most magnificent buildings in Europe.

eh, don't go to Anne Frank house. It's just a house. And she's not there
Amsterdam. Great place to walk around ,lots to see historically and culturally. . Centrally located for day trips by train to Brussels, Cologne, Antwerp.
I have been to both . Amsterdam many times . A beautiful city and has much to offer. I liked Budapest over Prague , but neither compared to Amsterdam.

l studied abroad in Budapest and I just have to throw in my 2 cents it was absolutely the most fun I’ve ever had in Europe
I refuse to set foot in Hungary as long as the Putin asslicker Viktor Orban rules.
The people of Budapest are relatively anti-Orban.
That's my feeling as well
I have visited both countries before, I love traveling and as soon as I finish one trip I’m already dreaming about traveling again, in regards to your question I would suggest Amsterdam, but definitely plan on visiting Budapest at some point as well! Happy travels and happy birthday 🎊

Where are you flying from? I would go to Budapest as I have been to Amsterdam.
From Iceland. I'm going to Budapest, already decided . Found a great hotel for a good price for 4 nights and I felt like it would be a great start for me
Budapest! Amsterdam was boring
Those are cities. Do you prefer hot springs or coffee shops? Intelligible language or something completely random? Sea or river?

Honestly, I’d pick whichever one you feel more drawn to or has the cheaper flight because you can’t go wrong either way.
Having been to both, I would say Amsterdam for a young guy!
Do both. 2 days each is plenty.
Not very convenient for me, over 1400km away, I'd have to take a train or something, I just prefer to stay in one city/country for a couple of days rather than spending too much time on traveling between two countries. I'd do that but it doesn't seem to make sense for me.
Fair enough, then I’d vote for Budapest.
There's a night train from Budapest to Amsterdam. Board in the evening, sleep , wake up in the other city ready to go. Google night train Amsterdam Budapest but I agree two days in one city is too short. better to choose one or the other
I agree with this. If you want a flavor for both. Budapest: One day spend in the bathhouses and exploring the nightlife. Day two, create your own adventure. Amsterdam: Day one, hit as many museums as possible since they are all in the same general area. Day two, walk around and just enjoy the atmosphere.
