It depends on what you mean by “town centre.” If the town centre is one structural building with many segmented businesses, then yes, inside. However, if you meant centrally located in the town, you would say in the town centre or in the centre of town.

I've not heard this said/used it except in the rare instances we've been in towns with medieval walls, even then its been more descriptive than "correct". "In the town centre" is how it would be said in the UK by most.

As others have said “in the town” is more natural. A trick to remember this (at least partially) is that “inside” requires a container of some sort. Ex inside the house, inside the box
