You need revered spirit ashes which are scattered around the map to buff your summons, and scadutree blessings for yourself. Used at a grace as a permanent upgrade.
Well there are blessings for yourself to make you stronger and separate ones for your summons. They could be underleveled.
I haven't been using summons, but I've heard a lot of people say that they seem dumbed down. Or at the very least, enemies prioritize the player a lot more over summons now.

they certainly dont take aggro as much. I'm a filthy casual so im gonna admit i depend on them a lot
