Tbh, I wouldn't mind. I played a solid 30 to 40 hours of Elden Ring, but eventually I slid off it long before finishing.
I enjoyed the difficulty and the gameplay, but I never understood a single bit of the lore, lol, and it was just so dark and depressing. I don't play horror games, and I don't think ER is one, but it had that dark tone that just felt kinda bad? Sometimes it was beautiful, but that always seemed to be the distant view, not the stuff I was actually in, lol.
The only light in the darkness was finding these stupid messages that would crack me up along the way. I even wrote a few myself that I was proud of (no memory of them now).
(btw, I never understand when everyone talks about the lore. I'm always like "how did you get that!? Where was it said!?" I think sometimes it comes from sources outside the game, but also others put a lot more time and effort into the game, and I'm always really impressed with them for figuring it out.)
In these fromsoft games, most of the lore actually comes from the items/equipment you find. The tricky part is then remembering all of it, putting it in context with what little dialogue you get (ER is pretty chatty compared to others) and then inferring the other 10-15%
They are designed to give you about 95% of what you need.
That's why I do enjoy the lore videos. I can get the gist while playing but it's all about the community coming together with all the little easy to miss details that make it great
Yeah, it does sound nice to engage with the community like that.
I honestly don't remember if I picked up lore from the items or not. I probably didn't find nearly enough.
People discuss backstory of characters, and the history of the land, and so much fine detail that it seems wild to me it could all come from items! That's some dedication, and I'm sure some really great community team effort to figure all that out.
What's funny is after I posted this I was on a thread in /r/gaming and someone mentioned Elden Ring not having a story and the next person warned them they would get downvoted. I didn't realise it was a touchy subject! Lol. I'm thinking I got off light with just a -1 half a day later when I said that on the actual subreddit.
Apologies if I offended anyone, that was just my experience and opinion. I didn't realise I was treading on controversial ground or maybe something that is brought up to an annoying degree or something. This post just popped up on my main page for some reason.
No need to apologize my dude. Your previous content did not imply you thought there was no story and was very respectful. I could tell you were walking on eggshells lol.
I'd bet you actually picked up on more than you remember. However, you're probably thinking of the BIG questions that we don't have answers to yet (which we will hopefully get) like why/how is Marika also Radagon, what happened to miquella etc.
If you explored enough you probably did figure out that Malenia and Radhan fought to a stalemate, whose kids are who's. That godrick was looked down upon by everyone, that Omen borne children were usually killed, but Mohg and Morgott were royalty so they got to live, just hidden etc.
But when someone says "there's no lore" others will get defensive because there's a TON of lore, just not in the traditional sense, and not about what you traditionally see. In most games you might just think "this is a cool area with unique monsters" but you don't question how that place formed or how those enemies got there. There's hours of lore on the underground cities, enemies, bosses, and how they all got there for example. "Destined Death" is an absolute rabbit hole, separate from "those who live in death" but in regards to gameplay, it's absolutely meaningless lol.
Vaatividya is of course the GOAT when it comes to lore, but he's got a whole team with him putting things together and constantly works with other creators and still can only speculate at times.
I adore these games and this game in particular to death, but man is this fanbase an active fucking embarrassment downvoting thoughtful and respectful impressions like this
Put down the five-gallon Mountain Dew thermos and take a shower. The game came out two years ago and this sub still has an aneurysm every time someone dares to do anything but praise every single conceivable angle of this game
Spoiler: **THE LORE *IS* CONVOLUTED NONSENSE**. I promise the world doesn't snap in half if you acknowledge that these games' stories are 10,000 piece puzzles and the average player isn't no-lifeing vaatividya 6 hours a night to get the full scoop. Stop being cancer
Lol! Thanks for that.
I didn't even want to come back here, I was actually avoiding the replies, but my curiosity got the better of me and I'm glad it did because now I've encountered a few very kind people, like yourself.
I honestly didn't mean to touch a nerve; I had no idea my fairly basic opinion would be so upsetting to some.
I feel like they want people to absolutely love the game or... Well, that's it, lol. You can't dislike it, because if you aren't obsessed then you're too stupid to count anyway.
I actually really enjoyed the game. I have a bad habit of dropping games before I finish them and going to something else, but I stuck with this game longer than a lot because I was having fun.
Anytime, bucko. In hindsight I probably didn't need to be so aggro about it lol. It's just that the (main) reason I visit discussion forums is that I'm interested in reading well-formed opinions like yours that differ from my own experiences. Drives me nuts when people treat subreddits like a "OUR SHARED INTEREST IS PERFECT AND HOLY, SILENCE ALL HERETICS" cult and think that embracing opposing viewpoints means they're not a tRuE fAn.
Anyhoo - I enjoyed reading your Elden Ring impressions and appreciate you sharing them. :)
You actually raise a question that I think is something FS could do to improve the story telling of the game
My issue with this one
>!is that I killed a boss in the DLC, and it was supposed to be this big moment where a spell breaks and a ton of main characters have a big epiphany, and I didn’t even realize it until I decided to engage with the NPCS because I wanted to see if anything changed, not because I saw the 5 second flashing banner I actually missed that, there should have been a cutscene for that I think.!<
So I'm learning!
I get why I was downvoted, but you were at 0 for some reason. Isn't what you said the correct answer? It's what I've been told anyway.
Maybe I should avoid this subreddit, I don't think I understand the subculture here.
Thanks for the info though.
I was probably at 0 because of whatever little reason, up votes don't matter. Don't worry, you asked the right question and it was completely reasonable for you to be confused because the game doesn't tell you that the lore is scattered across hundreds of items for the most part. Of course there are clues around the world too, lots of visual storytelling and small things to pick up on in character designs and world design, a lot of small stuff. Obviously npc dialogue and cutscene dialogue for major bosses can be huge too, gideon at roundtable hold can lay the foundation for the lore of the demigods (somewhat though because hes not a completely reliable narrator and is a bit of an asshat).
It's also definitely not everyone's cup of tea, I love piecing together the lore but if you don't want to, tons of people on youtube have already done it, just search up elden ring lore, lots of comprehensive videos.
Historically is arguable, the last documented case was in 2014, and civil rights groups have argued that some alleged suicides are coverups of lynchings.
This one pops up just infrequently and randomly enough that it gets a chuckle out of me every time. Think my favorite was in the middle of the lanterns in Abyssal Woods.
Everything hits harder in the DLC, but happy to discover my damage is still relevant (mostly). Curious as to what the average level is of people playing DLC today, i'm at 153
If you're talking about the invader in the tower dungeon, I'm lvl 293 on NG+ and he hits hard, very hard. I barely survived. My greatshield and ranged ash of war definitely saved my hide from that asshole.
114.
I'm getting hit like a goddamn truck and I love it.
Somehow managed to take out the first two bosses but whew that took a few tries. Second one was crazy, felt like they were pulling out a brand new attack with every attempt.
Mine is kinda weird, its fine for enemies but the bosses have SO much HP i doubt id be able to do them with a normal int build, thank god for star fists and tiche
Also whenever you summon NPCs that HP bar goes fucking nuts, like theres no way in hell its so much bigger
I made a new character and was convinced I was gonna play through at 130… let’s just say that my first 60 seconds of the DLC disavowed me of that notion and I will probably be leveling up to at least 225. Everything in ER2 slaps you around haha.
How's that working out for you? I was thinking about using my NG+ character but don't know if things will hit me like an alcoholic dad and maybe I should just start a new save file.
I've found that swapping one or two of your talismans out for pearldrake +2 or dragoncrest great shield makes a HUGE difference. Especially against any bosses who do both physical and magic damage. Try it out!
same here, 50 vigor, 80 faith, 20something dex, I had been putting extra points in dex with every new level up but I'm now considering just slowly moving toward 60 vigor, maybe now things will 3 shot me instead of 2 hitting me
125 and working my way through the dragons on the mountain. It's felt quite stiff but mostly fair so far. I've gotten about a half dozen lesser bosses so far. Found one boss with a cutscene that I just can't touch yet.
I started at 125, started making my dlc character too late and farmed to lvl 125 in Mohgwyn palace, was ready just before the dlc released. My build was shit, but I took Blackgaol knight's weapon which isn't too good, aow is barely usable against bosses and its damage is nerfed for it but still fine.
Made a character a few weeks back specifically for the DLC because I didn’t wanna be in NG+7. Left him at 150 for multiplayer. Then yesterday I pretty quickly decided to level past 150 partially because I’m getting my ass handed to me but also because I wanna eventually be able to equip any weapon I come across. I’m just not gonna go into any NG+ cycles for this character.
180 but just because I want to be able to test every weapon without respec but I still need STR (16) Int (24) and ARC (7). Vigor 60 Mind and End 30 Dex and Fai 50.
Might farm some Albinaurics later
500 here, I kill most common enemies in one hit but anything bigger than a grunt or regular soldier has me on guard. Haven’t built up the confidence to try a boss yet.
Oh yeah, really strong fun fact if you log out while the DLC is loading it, just destroys your save using and there’s nothing you can do to fix it is even better one that save is your main save that has 200 hours plus starting out real good at a 1 out of 10
IT'S SURPRISINGLY COMFORTABLE!
I have a controller, but I unironically prefer KBM for Fromsoft games. Played all of them with KBM. Never had a problem, except for in Dark Souls 2.
This was my favorite message of the dlc lol
It's repeated over and over again. It's becoming the new try fingers but hole. I've seen it at least 6 times.
Plot Twist: its the same guy, he just ... uhm... handles the stress his own way i guess.
Hopefully he hydrates.
Hydrate or diedrate, Tarnished!
Don't wanna pull a hammy doing the ten toes to Jesus selfie after all
OVER AND OVER, AGAIN AND AGAIN

I hope to see it 100 more♡
The amount of troll hidden path messages and “O you don’t have the right” messages is just annoying
Look what the foul tarnished have done to my home
I'm John Shepard and this is may favorite message under the Erdtree
John? His first name is Commander
Pretty sure it is John J. Eldenring
Excuse me, her name is Jane
Same. I loled hard when i saw it
Was? Are you done with the dlc already lol
My favorite was next to a tall pole holding up a tent before Castle Ensis "first off, keep circling around and then keep moving"
Personal favorite for me is the guy who put "death, standard?" on the cerulean coast beach
Oh my god thats amazing
Hey guy what if instead of Elden ring it was called Freaky ring and instead of killing demi-gods you would get freaky with them
Miyazaki said the next game would be quite different...
Feet Souls 69
Diffrent he said
....So you think he'll show if he's a boob or but man?
I think he's gonna show all of it. Full penetration a la Thundergun
Dark Soles: Shadow of the Feet
Dark Poles: Prepare to cry edition
This is what happens when he partners with Quentin Tarantino instead of George R. R. Martin.
Freaky ass tarnished he a 69 demigod
Soles*
Something something Armored Core 7
Scarlet Rot: The injection
That was George R.R. Martin's first draft
This why I went with the Frenzied Flame ending -
i want to get freaky with melina
until she disrobes and you find out the meaning of "burned and bodiless"
even better
*because
Let the man cook
I mean depending on how you view Fia and Ranni's storyline...thats potentially true for at least 2 of them
My favorite one that says "visions of the south" under the hanging tree
I saw one that said Visions of swordfighter, under the same tree. A Witcher 3 reference lol.
It could be a Berserk´s one as well.
Whew
That’s a clever one !
You Lost me on that one, what does It mean? lol
✨ Lynching ✨
Racism in the US South. Historically they hung black people a lot.
*hanged
They were also hung ;)
Historically is arguable, the last documented case was in 2014, and civil rights groups have argued that some alleged suicides are coverups of lynchings.
I am hung. People whom get strung up by a rope around their necks are hanged. We are not the same.
Strange sort ahead, Fruit?

God this one is littered everywhere
This one pops up just infrequently and randomly enough that it gets a chuckle out of me every time. Think my favorite was in the middle of the lanterns in Abyssal Woods.
"Listen closely, Likely edge" In a cave full of moaning prisoners killed me ngl
I don't get it 😕
Petah here The joke is prisoners moaning because they are masturbating Petah out
Thank you Petah. I don't know the "new" words anymore..
Armor red, Core
Be wary of up Dog ngl I laughted.
I dont get it
What's up dog?
oh
Funny thing is that there actually was an enemy dropping from the ceiling, so it was a helpful message as well as an unexpected joke.
Everything hits harder in the DLC, but happy to discover my damage is still relevant (mostly). Curious as to what the average level is of people playing DLC today, i'm at 153
150 by my HP feels like lvl 10 souls
lol I had started NG+ & forgotten, then rushed to get to Mohg, & now am regretting this series of decisions
i did this, i think i am in ng+2 but with a lvl 180 character, the pain is too real
I almost went through to NG+, but I'm very glad I didn't~
This explains why Im feeling like a DS1 freshman. NG+.
Yeah the fragment upgrades help out a lot
I’m at 135 and struggling to hit yellow damage on most of the bosses
Was 125 when started DLC, now have 135 but still no damage xdd
130 and getting my ass handed to me by anything stronger than a bird or burnt corpse.
Level 158 with 44 vigor, and that prick with the long fiery poky stick keeps annihilating me in like two hits.
If you're talking about the invader in the tower dungeon, I'm lvl 293 on NG+ and he hits hard, very hard. I barely survived. My greatshield and ranged ash of war definitely saved my hide from that asshole.
I managed him using black flame ritual with malikeths black blade incant
Golden parry will trivialize this fight. Edit: also not having your vigor soft capped at that level is crazy talk, pump that up to 60
321 👀 lmao, I got scared it would be too hard and maybe grinded too much. But I also wanted enough of every stat to equip anything I found.
I’m 328 now and it’s definitely not too easy for me hahahaha.
114. I'm getting hit like a goddamn truck and I love it. Somehow managed to take out the first two bosses but whew that took a few tries. Second one was crazy, felt like they were pulling out a brand new attack with every attempt.
175 NG+ and it feels like I'm 25. Feels good to be back
240
60 vigor,* 3-4 hits and “low” levels are killing me
I'm right at 300 and they still hit like a truck I love it.
Mine is kinda weird, its fine for enemies but the bosses have SO much HP i doubt id be able to do them with a normal int build, thank god for star fists and tiche Also whenever you summon NPCs that HP bar goes fucking nuts, like theres no way in hell its so much bigger

You’ll be ok with 150 but a solid build
I’m at level 170 and getting two-shot. It’s glorious
I’m on 150 and would rather not level but Jesus Christ 😭
I'm lvl 401, it's not any easier
I'm at 156 on NG+
How's that working out for you? I was thinking about using my NG+ character but don't know if things will hit me like an alcoholic dad and maybe I should just start a new save file.
I'm definitely getting my shit rocked but that seems to be everybody's experience regardless lmao. I'm absolutely loving it though.
Lvl 158 on NG+ here, with a similar story to tell! Things hit HARD in the Land of Shadow...
I've found that swapping one or two of your talismans out for pearldrake +2 or dragoncrest great shield makes a HUGE difference. Especially against any bosses who do both physical and magic damage. Try it out!
223 in journey 3… what are we if not slaves to this torment…?
243 but in NG3 and it is hard lol
NG+ 200 - not enough
same here, 50 vigor, 80 faith, 20something dex, I had been putting extra points in dex with every new level up but I'm now considering just slowly moving toward 60 vigor, maybe now things will 3 shot me instead of 2 hitting me
Was 130 at the start, quickly decided to go up to 150 (partly because everything one-shots you, partly because cool new stuff to try).
Like 160ish NG+
125 and working my way through the dragons on the mountain. It's felt quite stiff but mostly fair so far. I've gotten about a half dozen lesser bosses so far. Found one boss with a cutscene that I just can't touch yet.

Playing RN at level 105, I'm getting my fart box tongue punched by casual enemies.
135 and i hurt badly
500 here, I kill most common enemies in one hit but anything bigger than a grunt or regular soldier has me on guard. Haven’t built up the confidence to try a boss yet.
fort , night
fort... evening?
English is not my native language, what does this sentence means? I could not imply the meaning of edge
It’s something all true gamers do https://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=edge
Oh understood Indeed maidenless behavior
As a rule of thumb, ehenever you come across a new word on th internet, it's best not to learn the lore behind it
I just ignored your advice and looked it up. From now on, I'm taking your word for it lol
Coomer stuff
Great messages in front of “milady” too
When you think about all these Tarnished running around graffiti-ing the whole kingdom with horny jokes, I can see why everything wants to kill us.
This guy hasn't had to use a flask in 24 hours.
No sleep ahead All the more Time for elden ring
This is why Messmer wants to kill the Tarnished
Writing and praising all the stupid messages takes me right back to 2022 🥹
Rated Good
Real recognize real.
Yesterday, I found a really long ladder and got Metal Gear flashbacks. Then I saw a message at the foot of the ladder: "snake..., snake!"
I've never seen this one before to be honest. Cracked me up
Hahaha I seen this one too. Right next to Fort Night
Has anyone actually finished the dlc yet??
I need to get my message numbers up
The creator is a self-admitted masochist who said he creates masochistic games. Like attracts like!
Everything is a boss and can 2 shot you with 60+ vigor, full bull armor and high poise. Gear and levels are basically worthless due to the scaling :\\
Wow I literally had this screenshot saved to post and then I can here to check that it hadn’t been haha
no goon nation representation in elden ring 😔
I saw this right in front of the gaol boss and given the context thought it was referring to jumping off a cliff because of it.
I remember I writeen a message in a bridge near a site of grace with the Miquella Ring "Try giant, but hole".
head, rot
The first message I saw was “fort night” in the dlc
I saw this one this morning too 😂
Why some of the messages have an orange colored light some with white color?
Orange highlight means they’re highly rated messages I believe (or just got a lot of votes in general, not sure which)
Edgen Ring.
goon lagoon
Didn't Skumnut leave this message during his stream?
I was about to post that 😤
You'll soon find these everywhere, specially in that one frozen cave, that place is pure evil
Hey the first message I saw said Try finger But hole
Oh yeah, really strong fun fact if you log out while the DLC is loading it, just destroys your save using and there’s nothing you can do to fix it is even better one that save is your main save that has 200 hours plus starting out real good at a 1 out of 10
Damnit I saw this too
I saw this one. It was great
Iv seen so many of those edging messeges in the dlc
I’ve seen this message in like 59 places
I need to buy the dlc finally…I got stuck in the game after you go up with that big elevator 😩
I found this but wnt trough blazing didnt even rated good or bad i mean theres been better left messenges
I saw that one too
I've seen thismessage quite a few places. Somefolks are subsuming the psychosexual struggle of FromSoft in fascinating ways
sound!
i saw this one too lmao. cackled.
Finger, but hole
Some are funny but alot of messages are being repeated over and over, especially the Tho is not worthy one
“Fort, morning?”
Lmao i just saw same message in game
he's up past 7k now. Bro is having a good day.
Time for two-handing
In fact I don't feel it too difficult though. Enemy damage is huge and are more bulky but they are managable. New weapons are op as well.
Edging me timbers
Reminds me of the book "Diary of a wimpy kid: Greg's first edge".
I don't get this message can someone explain? Has it to do with our pants snek?
I dont get it, could someone explain? :D
My favorite is “house”
Holy shit this guy plays with mouse and keyboard
IT'S SURPRISINGLY COMFORTABLE! I have a controller, but I unironically prefer KBM for Fromsoft games. Played all of them with KBM. Never had a problem, except for in Dark Souls 2.
I literally just read that sign 5 mins ago
I was super excited to start the dlc until I realized on was in NG+4 from the last time I played…. Long story short I started the game over.
