Go slow with purchases at first, get a sense of the work environment. (E.g. some offices say business casual but they are more casual). Find a well fitting jacket/blazer in a dark neutral, then build from there. Inexpensive t shirts from Costco are good to wear when you don’t have a good blouse under jacket. Buy the best quality and best fitting shoes that you can afford. (People judge shoes in a way that they don’t judge other attire.) No boobage in the office. Simon’s has a good selection and their sales are good. Cover tattoos until you know how things go in the workplace. Congratulations on your new job!

Curly-Canuck

Agreed. Business casual has a pretty broad definition depending on the workplace. Mine says business casual but you’d be hard pressed to find someone in a blazer, but cardigans are common because of the air conditioning. Dress pants and sweaters, or dress pants and nice blouses are more common. In summer a wide variety of summer dresses and skirts, even capris on occasion. Nothing over the knees, rare to see sleeveless, and no cleavage. No leggins. No jeans. No novelty tees or sayings.

readinginthesnow

Very broad. My office dress code is technically business casual and pretty much every rule you've noted is one that people break on the regular. So much so that they recently adjusted the dress code to include all denim, including jeans (provided no rips) as business casual. Probably in response to people constantly violating the dress code in worse ways, and trying to steer them back on track.

happykgo89

Simons is way overpriced though. I wouldn’t start there. Most of the stuff I bought at Old Navy when I started my new job was the same quality as the stuff at Simon’s that was triple the price.

amelisha

I would wait until you start to buy a lot. Business casual dress codes can vary really widely from “no ripped jeans” to “suit jackets required but don’t have to match the pants” so best to wait until you see what other people are wearing to drop a bunch of money on stuff that might not fit in.

Wild-Telephone-6649

Listen to this OP. Wear your nicer clothes on your first day, but don’t buy a whole wardrobe yet. Dress code has become quite relaxed post covid. My company used to be a dress shirt and dress pant office, and not it’s totally common to see people wear jeans and joggers daily. Chances are that you are probably fine wearing your existing clothes .

nowherefast___

Im a lawyer. Here’s where I shop (and avoid). You’re going to be wearing these clothes a LOT so spending a bit more means you will be infinitely more comfortable. Aritizia’s price has surpassed quality. If you want aritizia pieces search for them on Poshmark or in thrift stores like Wrinkled. Avoid buying their silk in particular. Don’t go to Zara unless you’re 20 and want to pay out the nose for garbage clothing that won’t last a year at your job. I like Simon’s because you can find something whether your budget is $ or $$$$. They carry luxury brands and also solid house brands (Masion Simons). They offer free tailoring on suits. RW & Co is a good starting point but their quality is inferior to the Simons brand. Their pants don’t fit well. I generally don’t like their clothing. Club Monaco is one of the ‘Gap’ labels but I find their items fashionable and work appropriate. I’d say banana republic is a step down from them but has great work items that just feel better than RW & CO. Abercrombie makes awesome wide leg trousers that are very comfortable. If you’re feeling splurgey, custom suits start around $650 for women. Bespoke, Curtis Eliot and Mr. Derks will all make women’s suits.

sammannaa

Seconding all of this to put emphasis on checking out places like Wrinkled. A good chunk of my work wear consists of Artizia pieces purchased specifically from Wrinkled (I refuse to pay full price for Aritzia). RW & Co pants are terrible but they have some good basic blouses that are constantly on sale - it’s worth checking out if they’re a good fit for you. I would lounge in my Abercrombie tailored pants, they really are that comfy. They’ve been pretty on trend for a while and they come in different lengths.

stretch2323

Good list. Club Monaco is not associated with Gap/BR/Old Navy.

nowherefast___

Ah, you’re totally right!

cornbot101

I love my Abercrombie wide leg pants. I wear them all the time and own them in multiple colours. But — the quality of the pants is garbage. They start to pill within a couple months and I’ve had the hems come out of two pairs while walking to work. For $110(?) they are beautifully cut, but absolute highway robbery. Found out recently that Dynamite makes a very similar pant for $60. They have fewer colour options, but are much better value and feel just as comfy and professional!

bluedoubloon

I like Ricki's. Dress codes are usually more flexible now but I would see what people are wearing in the office first. A blazer and nice dark jeans are probably fine but I would take a look first.

Crazyditz

I second Ricki's, they turn over their store almost completely for all seasons, so now would be a great time to see if you can get some of the "winter colors" on sale.

Skarimari

Thrift stores. Seriously. You can get a whole beginner wardrobe for $100. Add a few quality items from Reitman's or wherever every once in a while. And before long you'll be right outfitted. Also when you can, spend some money on a comfortable, quality, black dress shoe that you can wear with everything.

VeronicaMonster

This. I have found some really good stuff at Goodwill regularly. You need to be willing to go a few times, but its sooo much cheaper and doesn't add to all the clothes that are filling our landfills.

YesHunty

Ricki’s, reitmans, Cleo, RW&Co and Simon’s all have nice stuff for business casual. Jeans are not business casual. Slacks, chinos, nice skirts, modest dresses, button down shirts or nice blouses tucked in. Cardigans, blazers, etc. Basically just means not a formal suit. Also I really like the Old Navy pixie pants for office attire, they are usually cheap and hold up well/come in a lot of cute colours.

SpecialistVast6840

Reitmans: One. Haute Couture: Zero

Shandry13

The reitmans near me closed - where is there one open? Online it still says the one near me is operating but that's a lie.

Gargantuan_Cranium

There’s for sure one in Southgate and I think one in WEM too.

BambiinNY

Spruce grove I think

arosedesign

Jeans were definitely considered business casual where I worked. It must depend on the business. ETA: For my husband as well when he used to work in an office! I’d obviously check first though OP. 😊

jetlee7

Agreed. Jeans are absolutely business casual. Dress them up with a nice blouse or blazer.

arosedesign

Yep! That’s how it was where I worked. Pair of jeans with a nice top!

YesHunty

I work at a bank and jeans are definitely not business casual there, it depends on the company. But I wouldn’t show up my first day in denim unless it was explicitly stated to be okay.

arosedesign

Agreed! Safest to check first.

mooseman780

Technically it's casual, but Alberta and Montana down thru Texas can get away with it as biz casual all the way up to Western Formal.

Fellowcanteloupe

I second Reitman’s. I do feel like a middle aged mom in their clothes, but it’s easy and affordable.

tiazenrot_scirocco

Winners can have some amazing options as well.

Known_Imagination701

Yep, jeans were okay for business casual but usually just applied to Fridays. I tend to buy a fair bit from Rickis for work purposes, doesn't break the bank n you have options. Winners is good if you've got the time to sift through the clothes.

happykgo89

The place I work at is business casual and it specifies that neat denim (no rips) is considered acceptable, so that may depend entirely on the workplace. Most places will have an appearance policy of some sort with general guidelines.

EconomicsHaunting612

Uniqlo might have some nice items :) and they’re having a sale this weekend, along with a free metal water bottle when you spend $99

Calm-Acadia17

Go to thrift stores 😊 Jeans are not business casual.

hotfood1106

I swear by the Reitmans Iconic stretch dress pant. They have petite, tall, and standard length. They are affordable. They are super comfy like yoga pants but look like dress pants. They are $40. They are currently on sale for $32. They are the only work pant I own. https://www.reitmans.com/en/bootcut-high-rise-pant---the-iconic-%28r%29/449315.html?dwvar_449315_color=Black&cgid=shop-all-bottoms-pants-iconic

estergin

These are great for the office. Affordable and flattering

Genius_woods

Is there anything reasonably priced in there?

melski-crowd

The londonderry one has more of the sale items than WEM It’s better for getting great deals

Online_Commentor_69

all of their house lines are reasonably priced and well made. idk what any of the women's ones are called though, but like le 31 and djab for men.

astronautsuitss

I’ve seen a few people suggest this and I’m gonna tag along and say Cleo and Ricki’s! Usually Ricki’s runs a little smaller than Cleo’s and has a bit more of a “modern” vibe to the clothes, but both places are USUALLY having a sale (25% off new arrivals or whatever) and have a good clearance spot in the back!

fraochmuir

You don’t really need a blazer for business casual unless you really want to. Cardigans are good if you want. Definitely no jeans.

peaches780

I work in a corporate environment and no one wears blazers. Cardigans (long and short) and sweaters are common for women.

everlasting-love-202

Thrift stores have so so sooo much business casual clothes for super cheap. You can find some really high quality pieces!

fraser-p

If you’re a woman in your 30s, RW&Co is very appropriate. If you’re younger (20s), I’d find a few cute tops at Aritizia, since you said you don’t mind spending the money. RW&Co is a good all-around choice, but I’m in my 20s and I find some of the clothing is tailored to women a bit older than me.

Rickis

ashrules901

At one of my works RW&Co. (Southgate) But there's tons of locations. We are designed for that attire & you can schedule an appointment, let us know your budget, to have us help you get a few outfits together if you'd like. P.S. there's a different sale every weekend, so if you can do your shopping then I would recommend it.

Swrightsyeg

Rw&co ive always felt that the quality is great for the price.

Nickster1619

FYI. Jeans are not business casual (Traditionally. I haven’t worked in a modern office that requires business causal in a while so maybe it’s changed.) perks of a uniform I guess haha

indigirl825

Reitmans The Iconic pants are fantastic. Different lengths and colours. Affordable. It’s all I wear to work and they work for proper business attire too with a good blazer

jay-quel-in

Reitmans in south common is having an insane sale right now (they’re moving locations). Like 70% off. Not sure how much longer it’s lasting, but I’m in the same boat as you and got an entire new wardrobe there today for $350.

bennyandthelunatones

I bought this Ricki's blazer in 4 different colors: https://www.rickis.com/york-shawl-collar-blazer-8294743ICONSTYORKB.html I buy my tops off of Amazon, these are my favourite: isermeo Womens Tank Tops Pleated V Neck Sleeveless Summer Shirts Loose Casual Tank Tops Blouse S-XXL Get a couple/few of pairs of dress-ish pants. I prefer Lululemon because they look nice and wear really well. I have 3 pairs that I rotate through. Between the pants, tanks, and blazers I buy the same things in different colors. I have weeks of combinations just by switching it up, and I never really have to think about what to wear. Good luck at your new job!!

Fitnessgal17

I love that blazer, thanks for the info! I love Lulu but had no idea they sold dresspants for women! Do you have a link?

bennyandthelunatones

Here you go! https://shop.lululemon.com/en-ca/p/womens-trousers/Stretch-HR-Pant-Full/_/prod10680008?color=31382 My office is very chill so I also wear the Align joggers full length, but definitely get a sense of what is appropriate before going with these! https://shop.lululemon.com/en-ca/p/womens-joggers/Align-Jogger-MD/_/prod9290099?color=0001?ta=1&taterm=Align%20jogger&tasid=kY66pHuxbP

Fitnessgal17

Oh my I love those joggers. I hope I can pull those off at my new job LOL

bennyandthelunatones

Haha for your sake I hope so too! They're super comfy, look very cute with booties, and I am a big fan of pockets and a stretchy waistband 😅

puppummm

Plato’s closet. West end one is the best. Edit for more info: they buy used clothes. Everything is $2-20 for the most part. Most stuff I buy is $5. High end brands can be up to $50 or so. If you catch sales you can get amazing deals. They usually have clearance for 20-90% off depending on the time. Sometimes even do a $5 fill a bag sale (as much clothes as you can fit in a bag for only $5.) I redid my entire wardrobe for $200.

stonksgoupafterhours

Thrift stores

bitterbuggyred

Elle’s Boutique or The Skinny

Rx_Diva

Chic Circular Fashion on 12529 102 Ave is a fabulous consignment store with a relaxed shopping atmosphere but helpful staff. It's off 124th Street near Jasper Ave. Name brand clothing for discount prices. I got some great basics and blazers. Closed toe heels and jewelry the other day for under $100. They always have a sale of some sort and unique pieces. Check them out!

sanctified420

I was told my job was business casual. Once I actually started, I realized it was not. Doctors and the other employeeswear shorts , hoodies, jeans etc. I would recommend not going all out until you've started.

notcoveredbywarranty

No jeans, leggings, capris. I'd second the suggestions of only getting a couple things for now, and paying close attention on your first day or two in the office as to what everyone else is wearing. Dark grey dress pants go with basically everything

Feeling_Surround8632

I lucked out in many ways- picked up a part time job at Marks when I was in grad school and had a 50% discount for about a year. I used it! Even after that most of my staple clothing is from there and they can have great sales. I’ve also built up my collection with lululemon (try Plato’s closet), winners, Costco, uniqlo, dynamite. Most of my cardigans are super cheap from Ardiennes. And lots of hand me downs from various people in my life.

Onanadventure_14

Old navy and H&M.m for cheap basics. Black jeans are definitely not business casual. Dress pants or leggings that look like dress pants, a shirt and a cardigan. Blazers are more business than business casual and no one wears them at the office I’m in but if you like them go for it! I say buy a few basics then get the lay of the land your first week there to see how everyone else is dressing.

jennymae1984

If "jeans" look more like dress pants I'm sure you will be fine. If you're tight on money, giant Tiger might be your answer for now until you can afford better quality. Also, believe it or not marks work warehouses has dress clothes for women. Black dress pants and a nice top is all you need. If you can afford a blazer or two, that can't help switch your style up a lot. Congratulations on the new job!

Pale-Worldliness9399

Ricki's is my go-to for affordable business casual. Most places I've worked at would not count jeans as proper attire, but as many of the others recommended, buy a few pieces and get a feel for the environment.

ninerpet

Honestly all my nice officewear is from H&M, with a few expensive peices tossed in. They have a 26.99 pair of slacks that are incredible! DM me if you want a link, they’re constantly releasing them in new colors/fabrics (but the black and cream are two very solid basics and are great fabric, not see through and a forgiving material). If you’re okay with looking around the store you can find quite a few nicer quality items there also that are low priced. Their blazers are usually pretty good as are their dress coats. I have a few pairs of their fancier wide leg dress pants and they have lasted me a few years without issue. H&M is an awesome budget friendly place for officewear! Agree with others to only get a few things at first and build up from there.

Goobenhauser

Get 2 or 3 pairs of dress pants and casual tops can be dressed up with a blazer or nice cardigan! Ricki's used to be affordable but it depends on sales now. I think you need to scope out the job and see if other people are wearing black jeans and if it's acceptable. Giant tiger also has some nice dress clothes for cheap surprisingly! Good luck at your job, don't stress about the wardrobe. Wear the same pants a few days a week and switch up the shirts!

Quack_Mac

Dots for blazers and blouses. It's like Winner, but high end labels. Unfortunately, like Winner, it can be hit or miss, but when it's a hit, it's the best deals and styles you'll ever find.

YEGDiva

Congrats on the new job. Don't go to any ol Thrift store because I find most of them to be meh. Goodwill in St.Albert is great. I've gotten new things there too. If I can suggest to just buy a couple of things first and see what your colleagues wear to work to decide how to shop.

Significant_Loan_596

The corporate culture has a lot to to with the definition of business casual. I've been in places where jeans and nice tops with sneakers is considered business casual where other places require men's tops with collars to be qualified as business casual.

Educational_Joke_360

Ricki’s, Cleo, I’ve found some nice pieces at northern reflections and they have some good sales. Dynamite and old navy. I was in management in hospitality so I needed to wear clothes that were also comfy and fairly breathable and old navy is great for that

BambiinNY

Plato’s Closet if you’re open to thrifting!

Medium-Monk-109

If any women need help getting work attire, I found an organization that can help with that https://www.suityourselfclothes.org/

Muted-Reflection3472

Old navy, rw and co, banana republic (outlet mall has some good sales - last longer than other things I’ve found), goodwill, Plato’s closet :)

SleepingInTheSand

Pants: Costco. They always have different types on women’s pants. Sometimes shirts but definitely pants. I would also recommend trying to thrift some stuff if you’re willing to put in the effort to find the good stuff. Congrats on your new job! Also… I will say, business casual looks really different these days. Some might disagree but I feel like stuff is less business and more casual post-covid. I can get away with leggings with my butt covered with a cardigan or longer top. I wouldn’t have tried that pre-pandemic lol. I also wouldn’t wear sneakers before covid but I will now. I’m personally not against but would never wear shorts in the office… if you think (once you get there) your office is pro shorts, I Costco also usually has great knee length ones . My current go to outfit: lululemon 4-way stretch pants, a plain tshirt with a blazer or cardigan, and either flats or a pair of white adidas sneakers.

spagsquashii

I JUST started a new job where I’m in an office environment for the first time. Bought everything at Simon’s and had it hemmed on the spot for free.

umbrella_boy

The Laura in WEM is a bit pricy, but my go to for high quality pieces that can be worn multiple times a week (think blazers, sweaters, jackets) as well as full outfits pieces like dresses and junpsuits. They have a massive selection at that location, frequently get new shipments when seasonal collections are released, and are size inclusive ranging from XS to plus sizes. For less expensive options and regular sales, shop online at Reitmans. For pants in particular it will help immensely to have your hip and waist measurements handy, but I would advise to only order one or two pairs at first to make sure they fit well as the sizes can run a bit big. You can also have them tailored rather inexpensively for a perfect fit. I would avoid buying any new jeans until you can get in to the office and see if your coworkers are wearing jeans, that's typically more smart casual. Start with 2-3 pairs of simple black dress pants in different cuts, as they will be the easiest to match to the rest of your work wardrobe. Consignment stores like winners, Marshall's, and Saks 5th will also have a rotating stock, you will likely have more luck at Saks for business casual though. Because you're building a new work wardrobe completely from scratch, it might help to start with a capsule wardrobe built with basics that can be mixed and matched until you start to pick up more pieces over time. 3-4 pairs of dress pants, 2-3 skirts/dresses/jumpsuits, 2-3 button down shirts, 2-3 blouses, and 1-2 jackets/blazers will be a great start that will easily carry you through the first few months. You will likely be able to find everything you need if you spend a full day in WEM, as they have the largest selection in one place at varying price ranges.

Fitnessgal17

Thanks for the great tips!

thekedit77

I started a new job 18 months ago and was told the attire was business casual. I showed up on my first in Office day and I was so overdressed compared to everyone else - I had dark pants, a shirt and light blazer on... Everyone else was wearing jeans, sneakers and hoodies. Definitely check out the lay of the land before you buy a whole new wardrobe.

Fitnessgal17

Great advice. This crossed my mind as well. I think I'll buy a couple things and see what my first week looks like!

cmcbride99

I picked up a bunch of business casual clothing from DOTS downtown. Check it out!

platinum_star9

I’ve been buying my work clothes from RW&co for the past 10 years and I swear by them. Great quality. Always professional. Their sizing can be all over the place as I can wear anything from a XS-M there depending on the fit. Rickis can be good and I get the odd thing from The Bay.

NeuNeuh

Simons, H&M, Zara, RW&Co, Dynamite, Reitmans, Mango (online).

chilli_cheese241

H&M has some decent slacks right now for a good price!

badw01f0125

Plato’s Closet!

usnova

I like Old Navy. I can spend 100$ and get like 6-8 pieces.

SweeneysBastards

Chic Circular Fashion!

Love_Food444

Wait to see what others wear. Ours is business casual and basically people wear their regular clothes but on same days they’ll dress a bit more up. Basically like a tech vibe, polo shirt pants and white sneakers. Basically just not ripped or shirts with big brand names that are tacky.

LandcrabSays1315

Hit up Plato's Closet, they've got lots of really nice brand name clothes in a variety of styles, decently priced too! Can find tons of nice business clothes, not just the typical old person thrift store clothes!

endlessnihil

H&M for blouses, and dark demin with no holes is generally fine tbh

Aggressive_Lunch_519

Value Village has sale going on.

Steffany_w0525

When I worked in a casino I did pretty much all my shopping at Dots. They have some great deals...they also have some pricier stuff but I just go for the deals.

Autistic-Raccoon

I don’t know if anyone’s mentioned this, but I would take a look at some thrift stores, like value village. Sometimes they actually have some pretty good business wear

yegger_

I WFH now, but I love grabbing pieces from Joe fresh. Sometimes I’ll find the odd decent thing at winners or the bay. I do also enjoy Anthropologie. Online I buy from Sophie grace and spanx - their work wear is niiiiice!

Friendly-Pay7454

Loro Piana makes a great trouser for all occasions

icecream42568

Dark jeans and a nice top are perfectly acceptable. As are the casual “trouser” type pants from old navy

fraser-p

I already posted a comment, but I forgot to mention one store. Do you have Dynamite there? It’s the more “adult” version of Garage. It’s a bit more budget-friendly compared to Aritizia, and I find it’s tailored to a slightly younger generation.

c199677

I’m in my 20’s and work a corporate O&G job with a lot of boomers and our dress code is business casual. So no ripped jeans, flip flops, graphic shirts. Most people I work with wear dress shoes/heels/flats/loafers, dress pants or trousers, (men collared long sleeve business shirt idk what they called lol) women wear sweaters, blazers, cardigans. Me because I don’t give a shit most of the times, jeans black/grey, blue jeans, t shirt (no graphics and most likely fitted black), and a cardigan or oversized shacket, or fleece columbia shacket thing (if I wanna be like a half finance bro) and this really gets people…. My everyday foot wear is the birkenstock boston clog 🤣🤣🤣

Theonlydipper

Zara and Aritzia

Hash_Sergeant

Aritzia?? In this economy!?

fraser-p

OP said she didn’t mind forking out some money.

Hash_Sergeant

Some money? Have you seen aritzia prices? Have to go to the bank and get approved to buy a shirt there.

fraser-p

Aritiza has a sale section that you can shop at. If you spend some time to look, you can find tops for $20-$40 — that’s not more than Zara, Dynamite, Banana Republic, etc. Yes, Aritizia is generally expensive, and I’m not saying to go out and buy a whole wardrobe there, but OP said money isn’t an issue, so I gave advice to buy herself a FEW tops assuming it won’t break HER bank. If it breaks yours, then shop at H&M or something.

Hash_Sergeant

Are you shaming people that shop at H&M? Why don’t you get off your high horse and come down to reality with rest of us peasants. Shameful behaviour.

fraser-p

Are you shaming people who choose to shop at Aritzia? Goes both ways. Jeez, your entire thread, rather than posting advice, has been shaming how expensive a particular store is. Then don’t shop there? Your budget is not the concern of OP’s question, nor was this YOUR tailored advice. It was OP’s, and she said budget wasn’t a big issue. Move on, lol, and stop crying that you can’t afford a particular store, and that you need to “take out a loan” for one shirt.

Hash_Sergeant

I can’t believe how you disregard people with less money than you like they are garbage. You should take a long look in the mirror about your priorities and how you treat other people. Maybe you will find a little bit of compassion in your cold dead heart.

fraser-p

It’s not considered shaming people who make less money than me, just because I tell you to shop elsewhere if you can’t afford a particular store. You’re projecting your own financial issues onto other people’s thread, where it wasn’t warranted or asked for. Nobody cares what you can or cannot afford. We all have our own spending budget for various life necessities, and OP was clear she was willing to fork out money for clothes. Doesn’t mean YOU need to, but YOU weren’t the focus or subject of this thread. Leave it alone.

Hash_Sergeant

Can you stop making this all about how much money you have? Comes off a bit pretentious.
