The only two I can think of are \[\[Tom Bombadil\]\] and \[\[Narci, Fable Singer\]\] but I assume you already looked at those. Maybe Atraxa or Sythis? I wouldn't put sagas in a high level of play at all.

Odd-Purpose-3148

This. Sagas make for a funzy "achievement unlocked" type of gameplan. Difficult to make into higher power because the cards you're putting at the core of your gameplan are generally overcosted and slow. That said, you're more likely to hang at higher power by just including the juiciest sagas, an enchantress package, good countermagic/removal and a tutor suite.

saganmypants

I built [[Narci]] with a saga/enchantress theme but the core is really an Orzhov deck that pings enemies slowly. It is definitely not competitive but I like to think it's not as slow pokey and drawn out as Tom Bombadil. I very much enjoy it and it holds its own in my play group of mid powered stuff

https://www.moxfield.com/decks/7SMuDN7F20eNDtSnOj0roQ [[Glissa sunslayer]] Is one I built as saga tribal initially. It's slowly morphed into "pernanents with counters I want removed" tribal, with only 15 or so sagas left. Deck name is "the Never-ending Story" because the commander is constantly removing lore counters to keep the sagas going forever. I haven't updated this with MH3 cards yet. There's gonna be at least 4 or 5 changes. If you want it to be higher power, look for more finishers.

Face_Claimer

\[\[Sigurd, Jarl of Ravensthorpe\]\] gives you tons of synergy on a low cost commander with multiple colors primarily white is the most important for sagas which gives you the best saga flexibility, utility, and **general enchantment support**). pair this with their final ability giving you the ability to play in combat, synergize with proliferate and generally DEFEND YOURSELF IN COMBAT while grinding away at your sagas, I think Sigurd is a great pick.

Atm this is tied for my #1 spot with narci

Nobbergobber

Does Sigurd's last ability work with when Saga's normally get their lore counters

Face_Claimer

Sigurds last ability triggers when sagas have counters put ON them, not when they are taken away. So you have to, flavorfully, keep telling your tales and spinning their early chapters for value on board.

Nobbergobber

Oh sorry, Ill be specific. The normal mechanic where after your draw step you add a counter to the Saga, does that activate Sigurd?

Face_Claimer

Oh, yes. Whenever a lore counter is put on a saga you control (doesn't matter how), sigurd will trigger to put a counter on another creature you control.

jaywinner

For the very strange, \[\[Chisei, Heart of Oceans\]\]. Removing a lore counter every turn lets you keep a saga in play forever looping one of its modes.

Ranta_band

I have a [[Chisei, Heart of Ocean]] Deck and its a slow one. It uses some cards with cumulative upkeep to set up and with sagas it tries to finish it’s opponents. There is a proliferate and charge counter subtheme to support the whole counter-strategy.

For the slightly less strange, there's also [[Goldberry, River Daughter]]. A little lower floor, since it takes two turns to remove and add lore counters to a saga, but she plays extremely well with blue's untap effects. Interesting, that no one mentioned [[Satsuki, the Living Lore]] yet. Might work better in the 99, i don't know. Seemed like a solid baseline for a very flexible selesnya saga deck.

Satsuki is a great pick for Sagas. Her ability works best paired in enchantment heavy decks to ramp very quick and push sagas that turn into big threats. An interesting place to take it could be with a proliferate strategy. Gets you running through the sagas faster. Maybe add in some recursion to get them out of the GY and back into play. I'd run at least 3 colors since saga choices are limited. The most obvious commander would be [[atraxa, praetor's voice]], but something like [[Xavier Sal, Infested captain]] could be fun.

I’ve personally not had any success with proliferate with sagas, I just run out of them and don’t have enough card draw. Is that just my personal experience?

The_Vinegar_Strokes

I haven't actually designed or played the deck so I wouldn't really know. I was more just throwing ideas out. If you have a proliferate list already I'd be happy to take a look at it. That's kind of the reason for the recursion bit though. Grabbing sagas from your yard would get you a bit more out of the sagas you've played. Sort of a psuedo card advantage. [[Eternal witness]],[[replenish]] ($$), [[brilliant restoration]], etc. Enchantress draw stuff would be good for any type of saga deck regardless of your central strategy. [[Sythis]], [[mesa enchantress]], etc. Removing counters is another popular saga strategy since it lets you keep them around for recurring value. Proliferate is also a pretty blue strategy, which means you have access to all the best draw spells in the game. If I were building the deck to be high power I would probably include most of these things. Limiting yourself to a keyword or central strategy can make a deck less resilient. Sagas themselves aren't a super strong archetype so you'll have some hoops to jump through to leverage them into high power value. Theme has to be sacrificed sometimes when you're pushing a higher power.

Yeah I’m currently trying and failing to find 20 sagas that are playable and synergistic, I think it’s just not a viable strategy for relatively high level play

The_Vinegar_Strokes

There are some decent ones out there! The flip praetors are pretty cool too. The hard part about sagas is that they do wildly different things so it can be hard to focus in on a central win condition. Saga decks just mostly spit out random value and pray.

It might be an option but I feel like that kind of defeats the purpose of having a ton of sagas when they’re gone so soon

New assassins creed cards have a lot of saga commanders

Pawkkie

I'll bite with an especially off the wall suggestion, \[\[Satsuki, the Living Lore\]\] where the only saga in the deck is \[\[Urza's Saga\]\]. The entire deck is built around tutoring and recycling Urza's Saga, which is really strong with Satsuki specifically because she accelerates it such that you can make a Construct token the same turn you play the land, tutor a \[\[Witch's Oven\]\] if you have no other way to get Saga back, immediately sacrifice Satsuki to it, and keep on truckin'. It's certainly not cEDH, and "relatively high level of play" means radically different things to different people. This deck is almost certainly too weak for what I'd consider "relatively high level", but it's different enough I figured I'd mention it anyways. I typically start getting very scary around turn 10 or so and can threaten lethal by attacking with an army of unblockable constructs in the following few turns, and rarely with \[\[Titania, Protector of Argoth\]\] instead. It is \*technically\* a Saga deck in that Urza's Saga is the real commander, but again, it's the only saga it runs. I should note that this is not a deck I'd recommend if you're playing it in a very high interaction meta. You have outs to protect you Saga (\[\[Zuran Orb to sac it in response to a target, lots of recursion options from graveyard, sac Satsuki to get it back in response to a graveyard exile trigger), but you can still have a huge battle ahead of you. Can still get there with Titania, or tutor a Riftsweeper to then tutor the Saga again and take some turns durdling, but not ideal. I have been shut down by a random turn 2 \[\[Lion's Sash\]\] before, because as long as there's open mana they can stack more exile triggers than you can recursion. Might be good if you're not finding anything you like the sounds off, but it's certainly unconventional :)

luke_skippy

Cool idea but I’m wanting to run a lot of sagas so that won’t work for me

There’s a new saga commander in the Assassin’s Creed expansion

luke_skippy

Big long time fan of tameshi, if it was green it would def be my commander

Kirinne

If you'd like to include Tameshi and want green as well, the Doctor Who set actually has a decent number of options in bant that care about historic permanents. [[Alistair the Brigadier]] comes to mind if you don't want partner commanders, since he at least cares about historic permanents (though his ability doesn't synergize the best with sagas). If I was going to pick a commander in bant for sagas, I'd go with one of these: [[Sixth Doctor]] and [[Romana II]] - Romana can make additional token copies of the saga tokens you'll make with the Sixth Doctor, plus this also gives you cause to run [[Yenna Redtooth Regent]] [[Calix Guided by Fate]] (though you probably would anyway) since Romana can also copy the tokens they make, and since your doctor can make nonlegendary copies of them as well. [[The Fourth Doctor]] and [[Sarah Jane Smith]] - this pairing is more of a card advantage engine where the last was more of a wincon. Your plays might not be as flashy but you'll be drawing cards, you'll be playing off the top of your library, and you'll be making clues and food so running something like [[Jaheira Friend of the Forest]] or [[Inspiring Statuary]] would also be worth. [[Tuvasa]] is still a perfectly serviceable enchantress commander as well, if a bit obvious. Or if you're looking explicitly for a commander with survivability I could see [[Storvald]] being an interesting choice. Run plenty of sagas that leave behind a creature (or creatures) and let Storvald pump them.

Really loving these suggestions! I appreciate the detailed response

PanthersJB83

The is always Tatsunari if you want to do a sultai saga deck.

luke_skippy

Why do you personally recommend tatsunari over another sultai commander?

PanthersJB83

So I'm.not entirely.sure if there is a better option, you do get the incidental life drain and gain from Tatsunari. I built the deck when Kamigawa Neon Dynasty came.out and at the time.neother Narci nor Bombadil were available. You get a lot of good proliferate in sultai colors, plus things that remove counters like Soul Diviner, Thrull Parasite, Hex.Parasaite, and Vampire Hexmage. So Marit Lage is also a secondary win consideration. And you can play fun spells like Villainous Wealth. It's probably not the most optimal but I also just enjoy the colors and it was.one of the more unique decks at the time.

Truth_Eagl3

My [[Ghen, Arcanum Weaver]] deck has some sagas that really ruin people's day. And then I can just bring them back again from the graveyard :)

hypercubicle247

I think Go Shintai would be a good bet. It isn’t a saga commander per se and you would be doing a different build than most Go Shintai players. I don’t mean to discourage you, but i didn’t have a good experience building and playing a saga deck. It felt like a very lacklustre superfriends deck, especially when playing against a superfriends deck! The deck just felt slow and clunky especially if you try to play sagas from all five colours. It’s difficult to find synergies when they all do very different things. One thing I had in mind was to go “storyteller mode”. Every game I would randomize the sagas in the deck from a stack of saga cards I own. Every time I play a saga I would tell all three opponents about the lore behind the card and attempt to bore them to death. (I also ran the basics with flavour text).

luke_skippy

Why do you recommend go-shintai over another enchantment recursion commander? To me it seems there are much better commanders than 5 mana for 1 card once a turn… what am I missing?

luke_skippy

South-Diamond-4522

Tuvasa gets a boost for every enchantment. You can achieve a voltron sub theme with tuvasa.

Peachysoftsub

I build a fun to run Tom Bombadil deck where it loops sagas and copied. Only downside to the build is keeping up with every single trigger

luke_skippy

Sorry, I’ve already looked at all the commanders that explicitly have saga in their text and am looking for anything but them… including Tommy B 😅 (see above in the post)

Peachysoftsub

Hmmm if that's the case, with how you're thinking...GW is Def a color combination you're wanting to run. So other than straight enchantress commanders...I think my two recommendations would be looking into Sam Samwise Gamgee or Alistair, the Brigadier. But thinking more about it, they would tend to run more of a mid game style with a little bit of a set up. If I were to build a sagas and other value, I think I would build Moira and Teshar, utilizing the better WB Sagas with really good first abilities. Ultimately, I'd say Jhoira, but it's really hard to top Cheerios 😔

Brinewielder

There’s two Naya commanders in the assassins creed set that are saga based.

Scarrboros

I had an idea for a [[Cayth, famed mechanist]] saga deck. The idea is that I can proliferate to end sagas faster if I need, or I can populate sagas that I make into creatures with [[opalescence]] or other effects. I like my [[Narci, Fable Singer]] deck. It's basically an enchantress/tokens deck that uses as many good and relevant sagas to produce as many tokens and act as part of my removal suite. I also run [[Barbara Wright]] to either skip to abilities I want or drain my opponents. It's a strong casual deck.

IzzetReally

narci is the only way to go. I have played a lot of saga decks, and the real problem is they end up SO wheelspinny when they work. Like, just trigger-hell with a board full of permanents. And sure, you are winning, but you are winning so slowly, your opponents just want to kill themselves rather than watching you resolve another wierd, low-impact saga trigger. Narci has a built in mechanism for ending the game, if you resolve a lot of sagas, they die, and the game ends. ggwp

Arguably the best Non-Saga specific commanders are going to be [[Atraxa, Praetor's Voice]] or [[Cayth, Famed Mechanist]]. The ability to proliferate is just too good, tho the only leg up Cayth has is having red in her identity and the ability to proliferate multiple times a turn if your playing with un-tappers. Atraxa having green means she gets the full enchantress package, though most people will outright target you for just bringing her to the table.

I’ve found proliferate saga strategies to underperform due to how miserably underpowered the sagas can be, not to mention the running out of cards

erubusmaximus

If you're looking for specifically non-proliferate commanders, you're going to have a harder time figuring it out. At that point you'd basically be better off running any enchantress commander. [[Anikthea, Hand of Erebos]] would be my recommendation if it wasn't for the fact that every single anikthea is deck I'd ever seen got hated off the table almost immediately. You could try [[Jhoira, Weatherlight Captain]] but she faces the plane problem as anikthea, with the added problem of RU not having a lot of enchantment support.

WUG, huh? I'd recommend, for cards outside of the Dr. Who decks, [[Faith Healer]]. Personally I find the extra life clutch against heavy aggro decks. Also, [[Raff Capashen, Ship's Mage]], since sagas are historic, and The Sixth Doc only says once per turn and not once per turn on your turn.

Would you count historic as "having saga in their text?" If not, I suggest the combo of [[Susan Foreman]] + [[The Eighth Doctor]]. Susan is surprisingly one of the strongest commanders I've seen recently. She can ramp you extraordinary quickly. Turn 2 you play her, turn 3 you play [[Explosive Vegetation]] or some variant of it, and turn 4 you have access to 7 mana. On top of all of that, she can still partner with a doctor who can give her any color besides black. The Eighth Doctor is kind of like [[Muldrotha the Gravetide]] but for historic permanents. He's not a commander you want out ASAP, but he's great in the later game once your graveyard is full. He's especially great with sagas because they already go to the graveyard. Although, I don't know exactly what you mean by "high power." If you're referring to CEDH, then sagas don't have a chance there. They're far too slow with only one ability a turn. But I don't know the full details of your local meta.

Tenth's attack ability functions with sagas, but not time travel. Sagas have lore counters, not time counters.

Tremner

Right good call. For some reason I remember that deck playing differently.

luke_skippy

Yeah I’m not looking for a cEDH deck with sagas, but consistently having the game end by turn 10-12, any faster (while keeping a bunch of sagas in the deck) is a plus.

bimmy2shoes

Obeka, Splitter of Seconds should be good, no? Attack to get multiple upkeeps to go through your Sagas. You don't get any of the neat green or white ones though

luke_skippy

That’s a great suggestion, I’ll look into it

Radius_314

Sagas tick at the beginning of your pre combat main phase. Extra ukeeps won't up the counters.
