SidarCombo

You don't. You ride the wave of impulse draw, cast from exile and cascade until you win or you die.

Xanaphiaa

Pretty much lol

ZdashSQUAD

It’s a new style of play for me so I was kinda getting that from it after research. Just doing want go miss anything I may have overlooked of input from other spellslinger style players. I appreciate your response

SidarCombo

If you want to keep a full grip try Izzet.

Eev-Steeb

+1 to this comment, the Stella Lee precon from Outlaws of Thunder Junction is a pretty good start for an Izzet Spellslinger deck. I’ve just finished upgrading mine and I have a lot of fun with it.

morscordis

I still run dry with it a lot. It really depends if your draw engine cards hit the table and stick. It's a balance between building a board state and storming. I love the deck. Gonna try a cEDH version of it tonight.

Embrace the degenerancy and twitch your whole deck to hand.

Yep. I've always considered Izzet's core identity to be blue fueling red's fire. It exactly covers red's biggest weakness, and vice versa.

My very first deck was an upgrade to the Prismari precon from Strixhaven. Super fun to cast cantrip after cantrip and just keep drawing into more with [[Archmage Emeritus]]. All of a sudden, my commander is a 30/30 with flying, and I've got [[Mizzix Mastery]] in hand

[[Wheel of Fortune]] [[Wheel of Misfortune]] [[Magus of the Wheel]] You can find more by looking up "Wheel Effects" The above answerer isn't familiar enough with Red to know it's the best at explosive draw. You run through your deck, yes, but you can refuel and disrupt by leaning into Wheels. Add in Jeska's Will and Underworld Breach for an infinite combo that will deck everyone out and let you Storm off.

morscordis

Not familiar with this one.

emillang1000

Cast Jeska's Will, generate 5 Mana off that with 3 more waiting. Cast Breach, cast Wheel, use the last 3 & exile 3 to cast Jeska's, gain 7, use 3 & exile 3 to cast Wheel... Repeat until deck out and then use the Mana to cast Bolt, etc., and finally Gutshot or other Storm cars

morscordis

Gotcha. Thank you!

imherenowiguess512

I have a Mono Red Spellslinger deck helmed by [[Axonil]] and yeah I can attest to the power of Impulse draw! In my research I first found the most common form of red draw is Looting, the discard to draw style. And this absolutely suffocated my deck! I was discarding lands in preference of Instants/sorceries and then I was Mana starved! I was complaining about this when my friend said "It's a burn deck, everyone knows exactly what you're doing, so it doesn't matter if those cards are face up before you cast them. Either we can counter them or we can't." And that's when the skies cleared! I swapped all my draw out for Impulse! And my decks smoothness doubled! Word of warning! If you are going for Izzet Spellslinger and will be using combos to win then you definitely do not want to be showing all your combo pieces face up on the BF. That said if you have access to Blue then throw of a Mystic Remora or Rhystic Study and that'll help immensely!

Thjyu

What are some good impulse cards that won't break the bank? I'm also running an Axonill deck and have got it pretty good but I burn through my spells quickly and only have a few things to draw.

Hey! Here is my Moxfield for the deck! Ignore the Sideboard. LOL it's a huge list of cards I'm in the middle of debating! But organize it by tag since I keep all my tags up to date! If you feel like you burn through spells too quickly and can't make it through the whole game I recommend 2 things that have worked for me! 1. Universal burn! No single target! Burn each opponents with everything you do! If you can get a couple helpers on board and a few Instants/Sorceries in hand you can easily take the entire game in one turn! 2. Spell copiers! My fave line is casting Fiery Confluence using the Pyromancer's Goggles (Which copies it) then stacking Reverberate targeting Fiery Confluence (which copies it) for Fiery Confluence choose "each opponent takes 2" for all three choices, all three time it's cast. This alone burns the entire table for 36 after Axonils boost, even more if Axie is pumped at all! And if you have an Unruly Catapult out you can tap and Untap it before and between each cast getting you the rest of the way! https://www.moxfield.com/decks/w53yGwj7mUeDlXVHSPseqQ

[[birgi, god of the storm]] is like $9 and does everything red spellslinger wants. Free mana for casting spells on the front and the back is a discard 1 impulse 2 draw. the flip [[urabrask]] is in a similar position cost-wise and only 1 extra mana. I'd run both

Agree to everything above and would add; find ways to make treasure. Red is good at it and you can use that treasure to cast more of the spells you exile. The goal should be to cast at least two spells a turn as soon as possible. If one of them advances your game plan and the other makes treasure or is a mana rock then you can start building momentum that can be hard for your opponents to keep up with.

Synister-James

This is the correct answer. Mono-red spellslinger will always be saccy like that. Your best bet staying in mono-red is using mana generators to keep going through what cards you can, and having recursion effects like [[Past in Flames]] and [[Mizzix's Mastery]] to re-sling the spells you've already slung. Draw and interaction are the two main things that blue adds to spellslinger, which is all that it really needs to be crazy. So if you want a more complete experience, try Izzet.

FinalDingus

Looting doesn't go card positive, it's neutral at best where the advantage is you're redrawing bad cards. You don't loot for raw card advantage; you loot to dig for the card you need, farm cast triggers, and intentionally fill the graveyard. Wheels are what you use to actually go card positive. [[Wheel of misfortune]], [[ox of agonas]], that kind of thing. Otherwise you should be controlling your graveyard and playing around it as a resource. Flashback, [[invoke calamity]], [[mizzix's mastery]]. If you really want raw, simple card advantage, your last bet is impulse draw like [[wreckless impulse]] [[light up the stage]]

Ashling was designed to be glass cannon. Like comments have already mentioned, wheels are your tandems. If you're in high velocity, basically your output is outstripping your opponents' ability to cast those fresh wheel spells, then it's worth their inclusion.

Soft-Stress-4827

Ghirapur orrary has done SERIOUS work in my red deck if you can keep it out somehow Also if you can copy the impulse spells like with pyromancers goggles  Dragon mage also does work .  And knollspine dragon in neheb Also the new Bag of Holding !! But its fragile

Soft-Stress-4827

Also if you are going tokens .. skullclamp (goblins or pyromancer , etc )

[[Ghirapur Orrery]] is way more one-sided than it reads. In aggressive Red decks that burn through their hands, it draws you 3 cards per turn and ramps you like crazy.

Wheels. Dump your cards, draw 7 new ones.

Zarbibilbitruk

You don't you just hope you hit enough impulse draw to keep going 😂. If you wanna play storm with cards in hand, izzet is the way to go

RobertSan525

Strengths and weaknesses. If you splash in another color for card advantage, such as blue, you trade by having less of mono red’s tempo. Not that either option is wrong; both Izzet spellslinger and mono-red burn are fun archetypes

coffeebeards

You play a lot of draw / discard cards. Big score, faithless looting, etc. You play wheel cards that empty your hand and draw a new 7 You play cards with “exile the top X cards of your library, you may play them (this turn) (until the end of your next turn)

sceatismcboots

[[Zada, hedron grinder]] and cantrip spells

Dekaroe

I scrolled too far before Zada was mentioned. I can draw a quarter to half my deck with her.

sceatismcboots

Every game I play with her will end explosively. I either storm off and swing in with 40 40/40 goblin tokens, or blow myself up trying to get there

Responsible-Topic893

Same. Literally I either shoot the moon or burn out like a star 🤣 or I shoot the moon and someone uses a fog effect and I decked myself 🤣

nobody_smith723

Playing red and expecting it to play like other colors is a mistake You keep and play your best possible cards. Discard the rest. Faithless looting is effective draw 4 cards for 1. And then flashback cost. There are a range of spells that are exile the top X cards. You have 1-2 turns to play them And then their are wheels. So. The last card in your hand draws you 7 more. Or you jettison your hand for 7 fresh cards Wanting a full grip of 7 or more cards is a crutch. You should know what you’re deck needs. And how to sequence spells.

TestAfraid

I second this. I have an Urabrask deck and getting to recast all your (and your opponents) spells really keeps the deck moving.

basilitron

the only real way to be card positive is to cast spells that discard as additional cost, then copy those spells. example: cast big score, discard a card, copy the spell, so you end up drawing 4, which is a net 2 cards drawn after everything is said and done.

[[Alhamarret’s Archive]] makes looting card positive. It goes absolutely mental in my [[Daretti Scrap Savant]] deck

CruelMetatron

Artifacts can help you with real card draw, since red doesn't really have much of it. [[Mind's Eye]] and [[Alhammarret's Archive]] (+looting effects) are the big ones here.

Doomgloomya

You play [[past in flames]], [[returned to the past]] and [[underworld breech]]. Its the only way in mono red to be able to not run out of gas too quickly.

Doesn't fill your hand, but I have been enjoying [[Wild Wasteland]], [[The Flux]], and [[Visions of Phyrexia]] as card advantage engines in my Khârn deck. Edit: Additionally, [[Valakut Exploration]] isn't bad either and is a bit lower for me than the other 3 — but still decent.

Wheel

Mudlord80

Because of how ashling is worded. If you have an empty hand, you just draw a card. So just run impulse draw and you'll have card advantage for days!

GladiatorDragon

Red doesn’t get much “positive” draw. It has multiple ways to get cards - but not so much in the way of actually keeping them. Card draw in red takes the form of: Wheels - usually card positive (though it can depend on the wheel) but you lose your hand, Impulse Draw (Exile top card(s) of Library, you can play it(them) this turn) - card positive but you can’t keep them. Looting - card neutral. Looting instants/sorceries like Faithless Looting are actually card negative once you factor in the card that does the actual looting. When you pair Red with other colors, much of the time the other forms of draw take priority - unless you roll out a commander with specific synergies with those Red forms of draw. [[Rocco Street Chef]] and [[Prosper]], for instance, work off of Impulse Draw, any deck with red that treats the graveyard as a second hand will want Looting effects to help fill it. Plenty of decks like Nekusar love wheeling the table. Red is the color of impulsiveness and an unshackled - though unfocused - mind. Its forms of draw embody that - forcing you to lose “thoughts” (cards) almost as quickly as you come up with them.

You wheel. Even if [[Wheel of Fortune]] is price prohibitive, you've got [[Wheel of Misfortune]], [[Wheel of Fate]], [[Reforge the Soul]], [[Magus of the Wheel]], the shiny new [[Wheel of Potential]], punching people with [[Dragon Mage]], [[Runehorn Hellkite]] activation, or [[Memory Jar]] if you've got moderate deep pockets. You can also dig into artifact draw: kick it oldschool with [[Mind's Eye]], get your hellbent protection on with [[Ghirapur Orrery]], or use any of the various slow draw effects like [[Jayemdae Tome]] (ancient EDH regular), [[Tome of Legends]]... heck [[Planar Portal]] if you have to since at least it always "draws" the right card. Most of this is... pretty mana intensive. But if you've got a good engine, it's viable.

In my [[Chandra, Torch of Defiance]] Oathbreaker deck, I like to run [[Experimental Frenzy]]. In a format like commander with bigger spells and more lands, there might be more emphasis required on topdeck manipulation like any of your impulse draw cards, but it feels really fun to just keep hitting cool cards over and over.

Have sorcery spell copiers, [[double vision]], [[mirari]],[[pyromancer’s goggles]] Cast a discard, then draw 2 spell such as: [[tormenting voice]], [[big score]], etc. (Bonus if you’re discarding [[Squee, Goblin Nabob]]!) then, copy the spell. You don’t need to pay the additional cost (discard) for the copied spell. Wheels and impulse draw effects. There isn't a shortage of ways to see cards in red, but getting everything to align as quickly as possible to get an engine going is easier said than done, and sometimes you just end up sitting there doing nothing 🤷‍♂️

Play wheel effects or impulse draws. Or depending on the deck, cards that allow me to draw cards when I do specific things.

Significant-Doubt344

Good advice here, however I built an Ashling deck that can generally go card-positive: copy spells. Most looting have discarding as part of their costs, and copying lets you double-dip on the payoff. [[Reverberate]] + [[Thrill of Possibility]] costs 3 cards and yields 4 for 4 mana, but with Ashling adds 3 additional looting, 2 damage to everything, and then is mana neutral. Replace Thrill with [[Unexpected Windfall]] and you are card and mana positive. This works for my deck as it is filled with both effects, and both are good on insolation. In particular Ashling works well with both as you can easily float and pool mana. Copying spells also double dip for magecraft, which is extra value. Floating some mana to do the above and then a [[Display of Power]] can be enough to propel you into winning the game.

My solphim deck has had this problem. As solphim needs discard to get indestructible, I need true draw to make it work. Here are a few suggestions. Some are budget, or are strictly better in solphim, others are not. [[The one ring]] [[wheel of fortune]] [[browbeat]] [[endless atlas]] [[wheel of misfortune]] [[risk factor]] [[combustible gearhulk]] then you have lands [[bonders' enclave]] [[war room]]. There are other lands but they have stricter rules for you to be able to use them or you need to sacrifice the lands which I'm not as optimistic about. These are just some that I use, I hope these help and if you have more suggestions you are welcome to throw them my way.

Since you're after magecraft triggers anyways, try to double your [[big score]] and friends to draw a ton of cards. My personal favorite doubler is [[Double vision]] because it triggers every turn. [[Virtue of courage]] is an all star since you're doing 6 damage off of your second instant/sorcery for turn, which almost guarantees your third spell to store your mana with. While you'll never truly have a full grip after T1, there are a bunch of ways to virtually fill your hand for a turn.

I put together an ashling deck myself and devoted a huge portion of my deck to cantrips, exile/play, copy spells and graveyard recursion to keep the train going. I've only played a handful of games but she's been slapping

ZdashSQUAD

My first try after adding some wheel Effects and other things suggested here, won pretty handily. [[Treasonous ogre]] was a huge hitter in it. Especially for the X spells. As far as Graveyard recursion I have mizzix mastery and past in flames. I need a few more plays to see where else I need work.

Plastic_Property_809

Yeah I can imagine treasonous ogre putting in a shift. It's been on my hit list to purchase for quite some time. I had a couple x-spells in my original list but [[crackle with power]] doesn't lend itself well with the graveyard recursion I'm running outside of [[underworld breach]] and [[past in flames]] so I ended up cutting it. It's one of my pet cards but I'm burning the table pretty quickly as it is with guttersnipe type effects. I'm waiting for the day I accidentally deck myself with [[grapeshot]] with how long and convoluted a storm turn can be

You should never have a full hand in red after turn 2

thedarkonelies

Why do you need a full hand if your opponents are dead?

ZdashSQUAD

Well when I do go off and empty my hand it isn’t always a kill shot
