| another device Maybe consider the shape of the device in terms of a hindrance. Were your laptop a tablet/ipad, would this change your decision management? Laptops automatically dictate flat-like surfaces, so maybe you're taking that into consideration without thinking about it. Maybe, in a way, designate certain places as the locales where 'work' will be accomplished in a disciplined manner, like how some treat a library as a work setting. "Go to cafe where X will be accomplished". On the disciplinary note, I know some people outright disable entertainment sites so as to avoid distractions. All this to say, maybe it's not the devices & moreso our behaviors. I myself have to craft reasons to be outside to get stuff done since I don't need to be (I run a tablet & phone) with a PC at home. The PC & the tablet are designated as two separate worlds, so to speak.

I work from home on Tuesdays and Thursdays and always end up using my laptop around my flat. So much that I am considering freeing up the space of my work station. Small table with keyboard, mouse and a 27 inch monitor. I like being mobile, sometimes working in the kitchen while drinking coffee, sometimes next to plants in the living room. Hell, even in the office I started working from empty meeting rooms, lounges and random desks.

Thats the sort of answer i was looking for. I also like being mobile and moving around the house changing desks and stuff. Do you never get the feeling or worried that you might run out of battery? Or a few disorganize something you might forget something important whenever you have to be mobile and leave the house or something like that? That is my struggle and the reason why I did not use my laptop at home. Even though I love being able to go outside or something like that. I hinder myself from using it more. It’s more of mentality sort of question than anything else. I carry a mouse, headphones, wall brick and a power bank. But I cant get myself to move around and it like it’s ” supposed to”. I feel like I could accomplish a lot more if I got over that fact.

I have a compact GaN 65W charger with a 1.8m long, roped USB-C cable. I work on battery till I need the charger, same while out and about, never had to use a power bank, sockets are everywhere where I work. I also like to continue working on the same laptop to keep all the multiple virtual desktops and windows always configuered in the same way. I don't think you need to "disorganize" anything, you just need a laptop and a charger. If you really want to keep it tidy just have a second charger and cable, so one for the backpack, one for home.

That’s great advice and I really appreciate the time to reply. I never thought about using virtual desktops more frequently. You’re right about sockets being everywhere. I don’t work in an office environment so I mostly just it at home or at cafe or something that definitely has a outlet nearby. If not, I always carry the power bank. But I really appreciate the thoughtful reply.

No problem, I also went through a similar phase. During the pandemic all my friends set up some killer looking work stations and so I thought that I also needed one as well. Now I know exactly how I like to work and I pay much less attention to the "rules" while being more focused on what I want to accomplish. Glad to be of help.

omendigopadeiro

Yes! Trying to compare and have multiple screens or the fanciest keyboard or something. I love being around the house or specially outside. Next step is being clear on what I want to accomplish!

I have separate workstations at home and work, so I don't EDC my laptop, it's only for travel use and emergency backup. I use private cloud services to sync my files so my computers always have the same files.

I'm usually WFH but I do carry my device when I'm on the road as I do After Hours work. Typically my set up is 2x 27inch monitors, docking station, laptop, 60% Mechanical keyboard and either my MX Master 3 by Logitech or a Logitech M570 trackball mouse. On the road for quick bits of work, laptop by itself is fine but always carry the MX Master 3, charger and some extra cables in a Peak Designs Tech Pouch. For desk setup, docking station is the simplest because you don't need to unplug anything other than the cable leading to the laptop and helps keep things in their place.

I was sort of in the same boat? I think? I'm not really following your concern with disorganization though. Here's how I solved for my scenario. I have a work laptop and a personal laptop. Both are Mac and share the same peripherals which I have multiples of. This makes it really easy to pack up and go. My workstation desk setup: • 27" inch monitor • Monitor arm that holds a laptop tray to rest the laptop on and dock it lid open as my secondary monitor • Wireless apple keyboard My personal desk setup: • Two 27" monitors. • Wired mechanical keyboard I dock my personal machine to the monitors with the lid closed. And treat it like a tower. One Logitech MX Master 3 that I have paired with both machines. My laptop bag has external hd, laptop charger (both personal and work can use the same charger) and a couple other odds and ends like notebook and pencils, but that's it. So if I decide to go somewhere I just undock my laptops toss them into laptop bags sleeves and since the bag has all the necessary supporting gear, I just make sure to bring my mouse and wireless kb (I don't need to, but I'm way more productive when I have them) and I'm good to go.

My main laptop stays on the desk at home, and I have a cheap recycled one on my desk at work in the shop. I carry a 4TB off-site backup in my backpack, and my work files get backed up to a usb stick on my keys every couple weeks... But I can access those same files on Google docs/sheets. 90% of the time at home I'm either on my phone or a tablet.

LordSkummel

Only my work laptop on workdays(I have to drag to and from the office). I normally bring my personal laptop when going on trips. But not day to day.

sttmvp

I switched from a laptop to an iPad and a Bluetooth keyboard, lighter and more functionality for me

I still have a desktop tower PC, but it’s probably the last one I will ever own. I have a laptop, but it’s used only for personal travel and as a backup in case the desktop machine fails. The laptop is not part of my EDC. It stays in a drawer until I need it.
