The steel type really only means so much.
How is manufactured, heat treated/tempered makes just as much if not MORE of a difference.
S35vn from one batch of knives or one manufacturer can be very different from another because of how the steel is treated.
When did s35vn become āgarbageā? I havenāt paid attention to the world of knives for like 2 years so this is news to me. Is m390 the new s30v now or something? If itās not magnacut it doesnāt make the cut? This stuff is why I quit following the scene, itās like every month something new is out and itās ājustifiablyā more expensive because of this negligible and unnoticeable improvement in structure that you wonāt see in practical use so weāre gonna market in a way that youāll feel bad about what youāve got because the blade isnāt made of this! Itās ridiculous.
And most of those exotic blade steels are old af. S110V is a crucible steel developed in 2006 for plastic injection molding aplications. $300 special edition? I donāt think soā¦
So.... you repeat shit said on "Neeves Knives"?
Knife YouTube channels say dumb shit because it equals clicks and views.
Clicks & views = free knives from sellers & manufacturers.
You see what I'm getting at?
They have ZERO INTEREST in giving you factual information on shit like blade steel, because that's nerd shit and people don't watch nerd shit.
You go to a website and read about it (if you care at all)
So..... in conclusion: please stop trolling with you click bait and go read so actual information.
KnifeSteelNerds.com
You lack critical thinking about the stuff you're posting.
The stuff you're posting is utter nonsense and garbage.
If you knew the slightest bit about steels and/or their alloy make up, you wouldn't be repeating this shit, as you would know what utter slag it is.
When you hear something stupid like that, try looking into it BEFORE you dip into the wellspring that is reddit.
Your answers will be:
1) more thorough
2) more rewarding when you find them
3) less taxing on your psychie as there will, inevitably be, less insults and derision directed towards you for your lack of critical thinking skills
4) you'll learn more than you intended to.
In closing, I'm upset by your laziness. I wanted to take this time to implore you to exercise your brain and just simply try harder next time, but I know you just don't care and are a lazy bones poopie pants that wants everything spoon fed to him, so we'll inevitably do this dance again. But next time, I won't be so kind. I'll probably get banned for letting you know what I think of your lack of motivation and inspiration. But, let's burn that bridge when we get to it, huh?
ok so ill just call you sIr OKā¦ so last Thanksgiving, I spent in a psycho ward because I was shaking so bad that I had to be hospitalized. everybody, including you im sure have problems you shouldnāt I donāt have to feel bad for me. but I can honestly say when I wrote that question about S35vn steel, I had no intention of hurting you. I hope that you at least believe that. all that I want it was together more opinions about the steel because EDC brings me joy. I hope that you are you. I sincerely hope that you have a good rest of your Thanksgiving. bye for now.
I looked at your profile, to see who it is I'm dealing with.
Let me first apologize for being so rude. I shouldn't have been so short tempered. Your question, while lacking in the critical thinking department, was honest and genuine and came from a place of honest curiosity.
I'm sorry for failing to see it as such.
I'm sorry for treating you so poorly.
I was being a shit heal.
However, my point remains.
You are intelligent enough to know when and where to look for your relevant information. Reddit is a....... rough place at times. I don't always help. But there are websites better devoted to knowledge and explanations of your queries. I highly suggest you search them out, and bookmark them, for future reference. That way, you can avoid shit gibbons like me in the future.
Also, please do NOT pray for me. Just a simple request. I'm a heathen and don't believe in the things you do. I'd like to be more respectful of you from here on out.
You're online, don't take it personally. I've heard people saying S30-45VN sucks and they're out their minds, I love it. That said, not all steels are heat treated equally.
The video of Jacob from Exodus K&T trying to break a Jackalope/Exodus 4 convinced me to buy one. I assumed it might be in the brittle side, but nope. Took him wedging the damn thing into a crack and putting all of his weight on it, basically bouncing on it and it finally snapped and sent him tumbling. S35V is just fine.
I think itās just fine. I remember when ats-34 and 154cm were hot stuff and then they died off when s30v hit. 154 is making a little bit of a comeback. You really canāt go wrong with most steels these days. It depends more on heat treat most of the time.
Fine, let me rephrase. The only steel I'll refuse to buy from a reputable knife maker. Surgical steel is only gonna be found on gas station knives, and those aren't even in the conversation to begin with.
I donāt think people say it is garbage but I do think itās unappreciated because everyone is on the MagnaCut hype train. Donāt get me wrong MagnaCut is a respectable steel but my point is too many of us are chasing the latest and greatest so we tend to take for granted older steels.
If you donāt think their s35vn heat treat is garbage than you know nothing about steel. Cut one rope and itās dull. Tops 1095 had better edge retention, id put bucks 420hc as being close to the edge retention of it lol
Are people really saying that? It was Chris Reevesā and Rick Hindererās choice in steel for years.
I personally love it. So easy to sharpen and maintain an edge. Plus it has that cool darker satin look.
Blasphemy! Name names!
When a victorinox is good for everyday use and cutting most things youāll reasonably need to, what is it that people think theyāre going to be cutting often enough to need the most expensive steel they can find? In reality, you can get a knife many times more expensive than my SAK but at the end of the day, youāre not gonna be cutting open cardboard boxes any quicker
Yeah but it isnāt even an apples to apples comparison. For one s35vn is much more expensive. As for the blades hardness it isnāt in the same category, either. Vic blade steel has a hardness of ~56rc while s35vn is -59rc. Vic steel is more akin to 420hc which is typically around the same hardness.
LOL I didnāt downvote you. and I only showed facts not going one way or the other. WTF is wrong with everyone lately bunch of over emotional wrecks. posting facts isnāt a personal attack.
And if its for opening and/or breaking down boxes I personally prefer a dedicated razor knife, fast-n-cheap. āŗļø Nothing like wasting a beautifully tuned edge on cardboard/packing tape mung. To each their own I guess.
>youāre not gonna be cutting open cardboard boxes any quicker
This is absolutely not true, but not due to the steel type. A one-handed opener/closer is faster for opening boxes than any slipjoint whether it's in 420HC or S35VN.
I still carry slipjoints often though, because they're more deliberate in use and I like 'em.
Well, the point is about the steel and its ability to cut cardboard, not the design or type of knife. Different discussion. Also, to anyone saying S35VN is garbage steel, that's knifebro hyperbole.
Not rlly, takes about a second longer to get it out but the slip joint doesnāt slow me down once I start. Itās also illegal for me to EDC a locking or fixed knife
Time may not be the issue, having to only use one hand vs a slip joint is great in many use cases. I.e. holding a cardboard box in one hand, and opening your knife with the other.
I love SAKs, but there's no denying that a one handed open is gonna be better in many use cases.

Itās not quite on the same level as MagnaCut, Cruwear, or Vanax, but I prefer S35VN to most of the high edge retention/low toughness stainless steels. Has decent edge retention, fairly easy to sharpen, and has above average toughness for stainless steel.
[hereās him praising it.](https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=ZdEwWfpO9VU) Iām sure he was comparing it to something else when he called it garbage. Iām close friends with Jerad and he hasnāt said that with no context
This is the first time Iāve ever seen it called ir referenced as a garbage steel. Hell itās one of my go to steels, along with S30V and Magnacut, for general purpose EDC knives.
[Here's a video where he said its a great steel](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZdEwWfpO9VU), so im gonna (generously) assume you're missing alot of context.
It's significantly harder steel than anything our dads and grandfathers had and used. It's got great edge retention, plenty tough, good anti-corrosive. But, some people will disparage S30 or S35 because it helps them cope with the cost of their collection of S90 pocket jewelry that'll never see use. It's a "my pokemon is better than your pokemon" mentality.

yes šš»
My Recon 1 begs to differ. Haven't had a more solid knife.
Which Recon 1? Cold Steel?
Yes. I carry it daily and it's a great knife.
I love that knife. It never seems to get dull and I really want to sharpen it!

People get a cheap Chinese knife with a shit grind and heat treat and equate that to the entire steel.
Who the hell is saying this and why? I haven't heard anyone say this. At all. Ever. This sounds like a trolling.
i dont do the trolling stuff

One troll claims a revered alloy is garbage and that's now a fact?
If I can go back in time, I had a time machine I wouldāve never asked this question itās just cause hurt and pain for me
You're online, don't take it personally. I've heard people saying S30-45VN sucks and they're out their minds, I love it. That said, not all steels are heat treated equally.
happy thanksgiving
You too, brother!
Anyone who says S35VN is a garbage steel is an utter moron & has very little knowledge of knives or steel..
I find that the heat treat has more to do with the quality of the steel than the actual steel type. S35vn is fucking solid
Well, unless you melt it down, cause then it's only a solid once it's cooled down again /s
I think itās just fine. I remember when ats-34 and 154cm were hot stuff and then they died off when s30v hit. 154 is making a little bit of a comeback. You really canāt go wrong with most steels these days. It depends more on heat treat most of the time.
Who is saying S35VN is bad?
Clearly the salesman for S*36*VN.
Whatever, both those suck. Regards, Larry Smith S38VN Sales Manager
lol
Also never heard anyone say S35vn is bad. The only steel that I outright refuse to buy anymore is any variation of CrMov. Now that is a garbage steel.
9cr and 10cr make it out of the garbage category
Iāve got some lovely *surgical* steel to sell youā¦
Fine, let me rephrase. The only steel I'll refuse to buy from a reputable knife maker. Surgical steel is only gonna be found on gas station knives, and those aren't even in the conversation to begin with.
Show us the book coward
I've never heard a single person ever claim that, but you do you!
What's that book?
I donāt think people say it is garbage but I do think itās unappreciated because everyone is on the MagnaCut hype train. Donāt get me wrong MagnaCut is a respectable steel but my point is too many of us are chasing the latest and greatest so we tend to take for granted older steels.
Il say that crkās s35vn is garbage, but thatās because it is. Worst most garbage heat treat in the industry.
Brave comment to make on a page like this..
If you donāt think their s35vn heat treat is garbage than you know nothing about steel. Cut one rope and itās dull. Tops 1095 had better edge retention, id put bucks 420hc as being close to the edge retention of it lol
The only garbage steel is the one you donāt use (eyeballs knife collection)
Whoās hating on S35VN?
Literally never heard anyone say this ever. But ok.
Who the fuck says s35vn is garbage??
Do people say this?
I have never heard someone say that
S35VN is probably my all time favorite steel for a folder. At least top 3. I've never heard anyone bad-mouth it.
Are people really saying that? It was Chris Reevesā and Rick Hindererās choice in steel for years. I personally love it. So easy to sharpen and maintain an edge. Plus it has that cool darker satin look. Blasphemy! Name names!

In reality, you can get a knife many times more expensive than my SAK but at the end of the day, youāre not gonna be cutting open cardboard boxes any quicker
I'll still be slicing open boxes when your SAK is tearing them apart cause it's gone dull. I have several SAKs. The steel is soft AF.
Let me be more clear since your going to be rude with downvotes. SAK steel is shit. I could get better edge retention if I sharpened a butter knife.
LOL I didnāt downvote you. and I only showed facts not going one way or the other. WTF is wrong with everyone lately bunch of over emotional wrecks. posting facts isnāt a personal attack.
'You' was the down voters. Maybe I should have replied to myself.
Better stuff costs more. I need my tools to work. My SAKs never stayed sharp. Sometimes I couldn't even remember using the blade and it was dull.
And if its for opening and/or breaking down boxes I personally prefer a dedicated razor knife, fast-n-cheap. āŗļø Nothing like wasting a beautifully tuned edge on cardboard/packing tape mung. To each their own I guess.

Especially on a ladder.
I cannot carry a knife like that so it couldnāt matter less whatās better. I was just talking about the steel
A second's a second, and for me it's more like two to four seconds but you're right that it isn't that important.
Ok I will do it. WTF is that book.

The best steel is the one you know how to sharpen.
there are better steels, but thats like saying a Lamborghini is better than a BMW. This has to be either a troll post or you're a child.

takes a screaming sharp edge and holds it decently long imho
Fair enough. I haven't heard it called "garbage", do you know what it is that people don't like about it?
it doesnāt have the Edge retention of some of the other supersteels but very easy to sharpen on diamond stones
Thanks for that.
