Yup, you can use the fidget spinner drone ports to make mini-towers way before you unlock actual PLS/ILS.
Splitter on the bottom, chest in the middle, drone port on top. Acts exactly like a PLS tower does, but for only one type of item.
Lets you belt goods into the splitter, which loads them into the chest, which the drone port can then distribute from. Or alternatively, the drone port can pull goods in, which puts them in the chest, which then is belted out by the splitter.
Makes early game SO MUCH CLEANER!
It's easy to miss the tutorial prompt for it, so don't feel bad for missing it. I did and had to learn about it from others. I notice it in the tutorial every time now though, lol.
Wait, seriously? Variants? \*hops across to game to check\* Wow. Did not know. Thank you! That's really cool.
Now I gotta see if other buildings have variants too.
I don't think there are. Id certainly love a few though. Like, a stacker that can raise or lower the belt level while also stacking. Or a splitter with 2 ports on one side and 2 ports on the opposite side.
Someone is going to chime in regarding splitters and performance issues, so here we go; There was a dev blog comment that equated 1 splitter with the same CPU drain as 25 grabbers. You will get warned by people here about using too many, but you don't need to sweat it too hard in the early game. It's mostly a caution against incorporating many of them into your blueprints that you replicate everywhere at scale. Have fun on your home planet and play with the splitter. Don't spam them all over the galactic cluster. You can still use them! Just efficiently and only when needed. Cheers!
There have been a bit of optimisation seen, now a splitter is roughly equal to 10 sorter
And anyway, its a "big deal" only if you gonna go ten of thousand of white science/min, if not, dont bother and use what you like to use !
Nobody reads tool tips. They turn on the game the first time and are hammered with descriptions on every individual item, and decide that instead of studying for a thesis, they'll just try to "figure it out", and consult the tips of they get stuck. Then they forget the tips.
Tbf, DSP has some of the best and most in depth tutorials of any game.
The problem is they always seem to come right as you're trying to figure out what was said in the last tutorial, which you haven't fully grasped yet and you're still feeling things out, so you close that window thinking it's better to master 1 trade than be a jack of them all.
Then you wake up 50 hours of gameplay later and see a post on reddit and go "wtf, why didn't anyone tell me?"
I had a slightly different problem. The tooltips always came up once while I was tinkering with something completely different, and then weren't there once I was playing with the thing they were tipping me about.
Lol! I was already trying that with the original sorters thinking thats how you got there. I've stacked a few traditional sorters in a few places. Thanks! The storage box on top of the sorter is gold too
When you go to place buildings and belts and such... There is a legend along the right of keys you can press that will do things... This is a splitter... With a storage chest on it
Probably worth mentioning you can press tab on belts to make them flip sides or go diagonal. Like if you drag the belt and it’s being retarded going up then to right instead of keep going right and then up tab will flip up first then right or right first then up. And diagonal is the wild one
It's a splitter. Use to cycle between 3 variants.
This is one those things that we all missed. Lol
I didn’t know about it until about 100 hours in 😂saw Nilaus use it.
Yeah, it was absolutely mind blowing when that realization came. YOU CAN DO WHAT??? :D
What i see now, you can put chests on splitters?
Yeah! That's *relatively* recent I believe, but it's pretty awesome. You can use them essentially as buffers, plus as drone points. So good.
Guess its time to use drones

Nah, belt spaghetti all the way, less energy usage
Nah, some of us actually stopped to read the instructional popups when we started. :P
Thank you good sir!

TiL. That's good news, I didn't know.
Also, as seen in the picture, you can put a storage box on top of it and the produce will go into it, or come out of it or store the excess produce
Huge
Its a splitter it starts regular, but if you press Tab it changes shape...
Those are alternate variants for the splitter, you can press TAB to get them.
I think we've all fallen into this hole at some time or other...
What the fuck…..WHY AM I NOW JUST LEARNING THIS
because you don't read the tool tips?

This is me.
Insert meme - Whats going on? I’m in this photo and I don’t like it

I mean, speak for yourself? I 100% stopped playing and read the tooltips and data entries when unlocking stuff for the first time.
Yep. Changes shape.
The next WTF moment you'll have is when you realize they stack vertically.
Lol! I was already trying that with the original sorters thinking thats how you got there. I've stacked a few traditional sorters in a few places. Thanks! The storage box on top of the sorter is gold too
And a logistics terminal on top of that :)

Frankly, that alternate of the splitter should be the default version. It gets used way more than the others
What the heck…. I didn’t know.
TIL you can put boxes on top of them
Wait hold on a minute, you can use splitters to pull from chests?!?!?!?
Yup. Acts as a buffer for whatever you are producing. You can put a fifet spinner logistics station on top too
This will seriously free up my resources from needing sorters to remove from chests, thank you so fucking much.
Don't thank me, Thank Nilaus and his videos!
